(I)GCSE subject information for parents and pupils

Welcome from the Deputy Head Academic
Year 10 marks an important milestone in your child’s education.
Choosing IGCSE options is a significant decision which requires thoughtful consideration as these choices can have influence pupils’ future subject choices for the IB Diploma and their studies thereafter
This booklet provides an overview of each IGCSE subject, including how the subject is examined and co-curricular opportunities (CCAs).
I hope you find it helpful in supporting your child in thinking through their subject choices and use it alongside information presented at the parents’ meeting which will be held before the options deadline
You are welcome to be in contact if there is any further advice or guidance I can provide.
As ever,

Dr Cyrus Golding Deputy Head Academic (Senior School)

How to choose your IGCSE options?
The Core Curriculum
This includes English Language and Literature, mathematics and science Pupils will also have PE and games in their timetable to maintain a healthy balance of work and exercise in the week and this is not examined
Number of options
Pupils will choose three options to study in Year 10 and 11 in addition to the compulsory IGCSE subjects mentioned above
English Routes
English as a second language (ESL) is offered for pupils whose English-speaking skills are developing and these pupils will not complete a literature IGCSE. Some pupils will study an English Language only IGCSE. The majority will study for two IGCSEs in English Language and Literature. This will be discussed with individuals at the end of Year 9 and the start of Year 10.
Science
All pupils will study three sciences and this will either lead to a coordinated IGCSE science qualification (called a double award) or to taking three separate IGCSEs in biology, chemistry and physics The decision as to whether a pupil is best suited to the separate sciences route (three IGCSEs) or the double award will be decided at the end of Year 10 and again following the Year 11 mock examinations based on pupils’ academic achievements and aspirations
Mathematics
All pupils will study IGCSE Mathematics
The most able pupils will be invited to complete an extended mathematics qualification which helps further prepare them for IBDP mathematics
Vietnamese Language
Pupils opted-in to MOET must study Vietnamese as one of their optional subjects
Other languages
Pupils can study French, Spanish, Mandarin or Vietnamese as one of their options choices. They can only choose one language. If they are opted-in to MOET, this must be Vietnamese. Pupils must have studied this language in Year 9 to be eligible to take it for IGCSE.
Optional subjects
Pupils can choose three from: history, geography, business, design and technology, computer science, music, drama, art, examined PE (IGCSE) and a language (see above) This is a free choice
