Concept Statement: Serenity is the feeling of being at ease, at peace, and unthreatened. The domestic violence shelter will create a secured environment that brings the women comfort and stability. The design of the shelter will incorporate private, collaborative, and communal spaces that will help provide a strong community bond for the women using it. The color scheme will contain hues of purples, greens, and neutrals to help give the essence of serenity and strength. Limestone, light oak wood, linen, and other materials being used will bring a more warm muted aura and will help create the feeling of welcomeness and peace. The shelter should bring forth a community of strength and will help empower the women to create a better life for themselves.
Concept Statement: The Midland Community Theatre design will draw upon the rich history of Midland through abstract references and form, specifically through geometrical and material features of the Quonset hut. This semi-circle military storage unit was important because it was where the first production was put on by the Midland Community Theatre. The history expressed throughout the design will also connect the educational spaces to its past for generations to come. Aesthetically, the materials used throughout the design were inspired by the mid-century era, during the time of the first production and the homecoming of many WWII Veterans. Many of these veterans, including Art Cole, supported Midland Community Theatre at this time. Functionally, the materials will create a light and welcoming environment while incorporating visual cues for wayfinding purposes. An innovative event space on the lower level will draw in a wide variety of the community resulting in more revenue and exposure for the theatre. The overall design will give a sense of place and pride to the Midland Community Theatre, embracing its historical character in a way that guests will want to experience repeatedly.
