HEADITORIAL Dear Parents and Students, This has been an amazingly busy week, with an incredible Fashion Show last Thursday, the Year 7 Tea party on Tuesday, and the Ides of March lecture with Dr Peter Jones last night. Last but by no means least, our girls finally got the recognition they have deserved for so long – they won the area Rock Challenge dance finals at Eastbourne on Monday evening, winning a place in the prestigious regional finals at Portsmouth in June. Many congratulations to everyone and to Miss James and her team for all their hard work. It was worth the wait! I urge all parents who would like to go to the Spring Ball to book tickets. Sadly, we cannot wait until last minute bookings and unless there are more tickets sold, Graham RowlandsHempel may have to cancel the event. This would be such a shame as it is a great evening put on solely for the benefit of a good social “knees-up” amongst parents and friends of the School.
Year 7 Field Work Year Seven Geography classes have been making the most of the improving weather and have started to go out during lessons. They are using the local streets to learn about land use mapping and carrying out an investigation of microclimates in the school grounds. Very soon there will also be some fieldwork in St. Ann‟s Well Gardens. Mrs Howell (Head of Geography)
Fashion Show Auction An Auction was held during the interval and, along with donations for refreshments and ticket money, over £2300 was collected for three charities nominated by the 6th form girls who masterminded the evening. These were The Katie Piper Foundation, Have a Heart and Oxfam‟s International Women‟s Day.
In a week of congratulations we should also applaud the efforts of Kamali and Tallulah Maidment who performed beautifully in the Springboard Concert on Monday night. This was a stunning event and Tallulah should be given special mention as she performed a piece by Howard Blake (The Snowman – Walking in the Air) with the composer in the audience. The „Brighton and Hove High School String Ensemble‟ will be performing in a concert with the Brighton Chamber Choir this Saturday 17th March at the Church of the Good Shepherd on Dyke Road. I am sure that they would appreciate your support. Our final Community Choir rehearsal is on Monday night from 19:00-21:00. All choir and orchestra members are required. The Choir Concert is at 19:30 on Thursday 22nd March in the senior school hall. After all the effort that the choirs and orchestra have put in it would be terribly disappointing if we do not have an audience to perform to. Tickets are very reasonably priced, with free tickets for accompanied children, and they will be available on the door. Please support your music department – I can certainly guarantee a varied and exciting programme. Finally the Associated Board music examinations are taking place in the music house on Tuesday 20th March. There have been several enforced changes to the timetable so please check the final version which is available on the portal and on the notice board in the music house. Mr Lloyd (Head of Music)
Ides of March This week Dr Peter Jones MBE delivered the School‟s inaugural Ides of March Lecture entitled, „What the ancients have done - and might still do for us‟. In his fascinating and entertaining speech, which ranged across millennia, he drew many comparisons with the modern world including the Roman economy and the Euro zone, and Alexander the Great‟s torrid time in Afghanistan. Mr Towler (Head of Classics)
Years 7 & 8 Tea Party On Tuesday 13th March the Year 7 and 8 students who attended BHHS Junior school invited their previous teachers to a tea party. The occasion was a delightful one with much chatting and fantastic food. The girls were proud to take their teachers on a tour of the school and to show off their work to them. It was lovely to see Ms Parker with her gorgeous baby Logan. The students who attended other junior schools will have their opportunity to invite their primary school teachers to a tea party next year. Mrs Schilt (Head of Year 7)
