Dear Parents and Girls, I’ll be honest – I know nothing about golf. However, I read a comment from Justin Rose the other day that I thought would be very helpful to any student currently immersed in revision (or just thinking about it!): I always say it’s only a bad shot if you react badly to it. You need to accept that you’re human and if you make a bad decision just accept it.

And as long as you learn from it don’t beat yourself up about making a mistake. So if you hit a bad shot, immediately let it go. Then give yourself a challenge: ‘I’ve hit it in the trees, so this will be a great par.’ Always looking forward like that. There’s no use dwelling on the past. That’s an ongoing challenge for me, and I think for a lot of people in life it’s one of the hardest things to do.’

He is absolutely right. The most successful people in all walks of life are those who focus on solutions rather than problems. Exam season is almost upon us (for Y10 it has already begun). One of the biggest sources of stress around exam revision is when students look back rather than forward: ‘I did really badly on this in the mock’; ‘I’ve never been able to do this.’ Take Rose’s advice and stop beating yourself up. Focus on what you can do and each day challenge yourself to do something a little better. That way you can make real progress without the crippling anxiety that dwelling on the past can bring.

Many congratulations to our Deputy Head Girl, Marianne Scotland. She learned this week that she has gained a distinction in her Grade 8 Drama and will be awarded a Gold Medal.

She also recently achieved a Merit in her Grade 7 piano examination. Super achievements.

A huge thank you to all involved in our spectacular 12 hour Shakespeare marathon. The jewel in the crown was the shared reading of Shakespeare's sonnets on Friday evening last week and it was inspiring to hear so many different voices united by such spectacular poetry. During the day there were some stellar individual performances and some brilliant group activities and dynamic acting. There was also a lot of laughter.... The staff 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' dream team is still waiting to hear from any talent spotters or acting agents out there..... If you couldn't be involved and you missed following us on twitter, then here is a snapshot of our day.

GET CREATIVE THIS BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND! Don't forget to check out the English Department's competitions page this weekend as the deadlines are approaching for some brilliant (and remunerative!) competitions. For example, the GDST Laurie Magnus Poetry Prize deadline is Wed 4 May. Write a poem about ANYTHING for a chance to win ÂŁ100 in Amazon vouchers! Send your entries to k.ashdown@ bhhs.gdst.net There's also the Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award which is the biggest award for writers aged 11-17. It welcomes poems on any theme and entry is completely FREE. The deadline 31.7.16. Again, you can find the details for this and many other competitions on the English Department's Firefly site. BHHS go to regional handball finals

Wednesday 27th April, the Senior School Handball Team represented Sussex on an away fixture to play within the regional finals which was held at Surrey Sports Park, Guilford. This was an amazing opportunity for the girls as it enabled them to play varying teams of a similar standard. The first game they played was against Kent and this proved to be a tough match. Kent gained possession of the ball and were attacking throughout resulting in a 7-2 win to Kent. However, the 2nd game we played was against Hampshire and this was a brilliant game as both teams were of a similar ability.

Our girls were particularly on the ball and were focussing on creating space and attacking at speed which resulted in a 3-2 win to BHHS. Our third game, we were up against the local team Surrey. At the start Surrey kept possession of the ball and their defending was strong, this was an intense game where both teams wanted to win. This game ended up being a 3-3 draw which was a brilliant effort. We were then up against Berkshire, after a 20 minute break the girls had to get back into the rhythm fast. However, it was clear that Berkshire were quick at resetting and were ready to attack so this meant that our girls had to get back and defend quickly. This was a good game although Berkshire stormed ahead with a 5-2 win. Last match of the day was against Buckinghamshire and this was a great game as our girls were on top form and really confident. They were keeping possession of the ball and when they went towards the goal they were strong and went for every shot, resulting in a 7-2 win. A fantastic last game to end on a high! Overall, the girls came 3rd in the regional finals which is an amazing achievement! A huge well done to our Senior Handball Team!

BHHS v Varndean U-14s football, Wednesday 20th April

On Wednesday a group of girls from year 7, 8 and 9 travelled to Varndean for a friendly match. Despite not training together in recent months and having only 8 players the girls were eager to take on the challenge. The game got off to a brilliant start with both teams being very evenly matched, BHHS made some brilliant attacking runs, managing to get through the opposition’s defensive line on multiple occasions, despite this Varndean were the first to score with a lucky strike. Before long the BHHS girls evened the score with a fantastic and skilful play down the right wing by Daisy, Josie and Grace. Energy levels were high despite the hot weather and the girls were ‘buzzing’ at half time with the 1:1 score.

At the start of the second half Varndean made multiple substitutions and despite a sterling effort from BHHS’ defence, Varndean’s fresh legs were difficult to stop and they scored again. The girls battled on brilliantly, Emily, Qingwen and Jess were under constant pressure in defence and managed to stop many attacking attempts from the opposition. An unlucky decision from the referee gave Varndean a free kick from just outside the box, which they followed up with a goal. Josie and Neve in mid field worked brilliantly as a kept the pressure on and worked hard to keep the ball out of our own half. With time running out and a final corner from Varndean whose high ball into the box, made it difficult for BHHS’s defence and goal keeper to clear, meant that the full time score was 1:4.

Throughout the game all 8 girls demonstrated a tremendous amount of fighting spirit and resilience against a tough opposition, they should be immensely proud and look forward to next season, well done!

Last Friday morning I was reminded what a great sense of community our Parents Association create. The coffee morning was really buzzing, (and it wasn’t just the coffee!) nearly new sale was doing a roaring trade and many parents just dropped in for a chat. This Friday my husband and I are looking forward to the annual quiz night. This is always well attended and everybody seems to really enjoy themselves. These events don’t just happen without a great team behind them and my thanks are to those parents who step forward. However realistically we do need 1 or 2 people to manage the parents association as chair/co-chair. After a fantastic job, Nicola Halfacree is stepping down in July and so I appeal to parents who might consider working alongside the school as the alternative might result in us loosing such a great resource.

140 celebrations th

A huge well done to all who entered the design a logo competition for our 140th birthday event, which takes place on Wednesday 6th July. The standard of entries was very high and after a difficult decision, we are delighted to announce that the winning Junior logo has been designed by Charlotte (1A) and the winning Senior logo has been designed by Sofia (9S). Full details of this very exciting whole school event, culminating in a BHHS Race for Life and picnic on Hove Lawns will follow later in the term, including a full outline of the day and how to purchase the optional t-shirts (with the winning logos on).

As you know this year is the 140th anniversary of the founding of the school and throughout the year we are celebrating in a variety of ways.

One of these will be a large ceramic picture to celebrate our city and it will feature the number 140 in a number of different ways.

Our school community includes families and family members from many different areas of the world and we want to highlight and celebrate this fact through the picture. We know that many of you speak another language at home and we would like to request that any family that does have a different language spoken in their family group could contribute to the project by telling us how to say one hundred and forty in that language.

We would like to confine the languages to those spoken or heard in our girls’ homes so we can create a snapshot of the school community in our 140th year.

We would be very grateful if you could send us the spelling, written out clearly in words and telling us which language it is.

The girls are welcome to hand these to their form teacher or you can also contact Mrs Hadfield directly on a.hadfield@bhhs.gdst.net. Many thanks.

This week’s STAR MATCH: U-10A Rounders v Farlington, Win 8-5 First run out of the season and it’s always good to see if all the things we’ve been working on in class and practice can be effectively transferred into competition. Mrs Fox shared the umpiring with the Farlington staff so this covers the first successful innings of two.

BHHS opted to field first and it looked a strong set up, with Eliza bowling, Alicia on backstop, Isabella P on 1st and Amelia on 2nd, all backed up with Ava L and Elinor as deep fielders preventing long balls landing out long. If the Farlington batters made it past this set up, and few did on the first innings, they had Amy working off 3rd, Georgie on 4th and Leah guarding 3rd deep.

The fielding was of a good standard, they looked confident and were getting the balls from behind the line across the diamond to posts. We are starting to look to 1st to get those slow out of the batting box out before they made it the base and if they hit it prevent the score at 2nd.

Just as the timer went Farlington were going to be bowled all out with two players out on the field if it had gone on another 30 seconds, great start to fielding girls.

We went into bat and took an early couple of halves to no balls and the Amelia ran a rounder followed by Leah and then Amelia ran another half taking us to a 4-1 lead at the end of the first innings. A really positive start indeed. The score was 8-5 to BHHS at the end of the match.

The Nursery girls are still talking about their Victorian Day and how children used slates to write and the abacus for counting. Arella told us that she needed to concentrate to do her times tables, just like the children did in the Victorian classroom.

We spend most of our time asking children to smile for the camera, but they found it really funny that we were asking them not to smile! I think you’d agree, they did really well at looking very serious!

Next week we are focusing on using scissors, practising correct hold and turning the paper when cutting etc. It would be great if you could practise at home whenever you have some spare time. Many thanks.

We had a lot of fun in our Nursery music lesson this week. We were hiding under the parachute singing “Where is our little Tommy” and shouting “boo!”, when everyone started getting static hair, which caused quite a bit of laughing!
