Dear Parents and Girls,

Next week sees the launch of our annual BHHS Book Week. Coincidentally, last Thursday, Education Secretary Nicky Morgan and children’s author and comedian David Walliams launched a campaign to make English pupils the most literate in Europe within five years. International surveys show that nine and 10-year-olds in England are currently ranked sixth.

The Department for Education is working with the charity 4Children to equip parents and teachers with activities and resources to help develop pre-school children’s language skills with the aim of getting more children reading before they start school.

Nicky Morgan also called on leading publishers to give secondary schools access to classic novels by great English authors including Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Emily Bronte.

David Walliams said: “At the heart of this campaign is a very simple shared ambition - to get more children reading. Few things can compete with the joy of getting stuck into a good book and I believe that is something no child should miss out on.”

Whilst this is a laudable aim, one of the things I’ve learned through teaching English for a long time is that the most effective way to encourage young people to read is to ensure that they have access to books about subjects and themes that interest, inspire and are relevant to them. It is also important not to exclude young people by offering a diet of literature that fails to acknowledge social and cultural differences. I was interested, for example, in a BBC news story last week where a 14-year-old boy, who was born with a disability, called on the UK’s publishers to include more disabled characters in children’s books, and asked why the villains of children’s stories are so often “deformed”.

Simply insisting that teenagers read ‘the classics’ will go little way towards encouraging reluctant readers. It is more important that teachers and parents make clear that we value a wide range of literature. Diversity is key.

DON’T STOP READING ONCE BOOK WEEK’S OVER...

How about trying DARK AEMILIA by Sally O’Reilly. The novel is based on the fragments we know about the life of the poet Amelia Lanyer and re-imagines an incredible story of writerly ambition and We are also very proud of our outreach her passionate affair with Shakespeare.

It has been brilliantly reviewed in the New work through Book Week. Afghan Connection is a charity that provides education, healthcare, and sports opportunities for children across Afghanistan. They fund and support schools and teachers and have funded the building of 39 schools and currently educate over 50,000 children.

year 7 gets buzzy about books After the success of the Year 7 Bookbuzz last October, the English Department have decided to launch the scheme again. Bookbuzz is a reading programme from Book Trust, which supports schools to encourage reading for pleasure, independent choice and develop a whole school reading culture.

Each girl in Year 7 has been given the opportunity to choose their own book to keep, from a list of 17 titles selected by a panel of experts. During English lessons, the girls were given the chance to hear a bit about the books from the authors and from children around the country who had already read them. They were then able to make an informed decision.

From the moment they made their choices, there has been a ‘buzz’ of excitement in the air! Keeneyed students noticed the large parcels labelled ‘Bookbuzz’ arrive at reception at the end of last week and have been champing at the bit to get hold of their copies.

7D were the first to receive their books and there were audible squeals of delight as they were handed out. Books in hand, they charged down to the library to spend thirty minutes in complete and contented silence. 7M and 7P will have their copies by the end of the week and I hope to be able to report similar enthusiasm.

The next step for the girls is to share their reading experience with friends and family. They will be encouraged to swap their books with their peers and to provide detailed, honest book reviews.

Book Trust is the largest reading charity in the UK. At BHHS we are working with them to inspire a love of reading in children because we know that reading can transform lives. So, Parents, don’t be afraid to get involved! If you have had chance to read with your daughter, why not write a few lines to be included in the final book review?

sweeney todd secret cast member As PC Dobbin, this week’s rehearsals required a lot of inspecting, particularly of Mrs Lovett’s Pie Shop. Something’s just not quite right about that place. One minute her shop is a dump: customerless and on the brink of shutting down. Then all of a sudden, it’s thriving! It’s been ever since that peculiar barber of Fleet Street became her business partner. Whatshisname…Todd…Sweeney Todd.

Mind you, his shaves are the cleanest in London, far better than that Pirelli’s. I may well pay a visit to Mr Todd’s soon. I could do with a shave…

birling cake I made this cake for a Geography project about Birling Gap, the cake is meant to represent Birling Gap in 100 years’ time. There are two things that motivated me to bake a cake. The first was my friend who is really into baking and has inspired me to become an experimental baker. The second was the opportunity to present this project creatively in any way that we wanted. One of the ideas was a landscape in a box and since neither Art nor DT are my forte I thought of a cake which reminded me of a cliff! Thus I set to work to create this tummy rumbling presentation! One long Sunday and one late week night later the project was complete.

diversity role models for year 9 Last Thursday morning each of the Year 9 forms spent an hour off timetable with Diversity Role Models which actively seeks to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying in UK schools.

We stop bullying before it happens by educating young people about difference, challenging stereotypes and addressing the misuse of language. The facilitators provided a safe and informative environment in which the students were able to discuss and challenge stereotypes, consider the impact of homophobic language and ways in which to make school a safer place for all young people.

This was followed up in the afternoon by a trip to the Theatre Royal to see the musical Crush.

It’s 1963 and Dame Dorothea Dosserdale School for Girls has a proud tradition of fostering free spirits from all walks of life. So it’s a crushing blow when the new Headmistress turns out to be a reactionary tyrant with strict Victorian values – and top of her hit list are the two Sixth-Formers accused of “Unnatural Behaviour” in the Art Room... But hope is revived by a glamorous Games Mistress known as ‘Miss Givings’ and it’s hockey sticks to the fore in an all-out battle to save the school and the course of true love.

It was an extremely fun afternoon and the girls really enjoyed the performance.

Patrick Ness fans from BHHS (pupils, parents and staff) enjoyed a fantastic evening when the American-born author visited Brighton last Thursday. He entertained us for over an hour reading extracts from his latest book The Rest of Us Just Live Here, with an amusing introduction to a country boy-band concert through the eyes of a teenage boy just before tragedy strikes. In response to audience questions he explained that he wanted to connect with his own young self in the character of Mikey, an ordinary boy living in a small town, just wanting to get on with his own life in a low-key way. He gave the young audience a lot of encouragement with their own writing and offered his definition of a writer as someone who finishes their story.

The Brighton Digital Festival have partnered with The Royal Institution to hold three Computer Science Masterclasses at Brighton & Hove High School during the Festival. The Masterclasses are hands-on and interactive extracurricular sessions led by top experts from academia and industry for keen and talented young people all around the UK. Calum Chace gave the second Masterclass and a Year 9 pupil reports...

I found the sessions interesting as they enabled us to fully understand what artifical intelligence and engineering means to our generation. It allowed us to express ourselves through the use of designing code creatively to building robots and developing circuits. Also the discussion of what could happen to future was very eye-opening as people became aware of how close super-intelligence really is. The Masterclass overall was a great way of exposing us to many different sides of technology .

year 9 careers lectures This week saw the launch of our Careers Assemblies for Year 9. We were delighted that illustrator, Christian Birmingham, could join us for an informative and inspiring talk on his work and career.

We learnt how closely the illustrator must work with the author, to understand the message that the artwork should convey, and just how long it takes to perfect a piece. Christian also revealed the secret of his success: just practise, practise and practise! We also had the opportunity to see some of Christian’s work published in well-known books, such as those by Michael Morpurgo, as well as his current work – beautiful illustrations for a new edition of Wuthering Heights. We are very grateful for the support we receive for such assemblies and are looking forward to more later this term.

1st October | JASHN-E MEHERGAN | Zoroastrian (Iranian) Jashn-e Mehergan is an early autumn festival. Mehergan is dedicated to the divinity Meher or Mithra, who is associated with the sun and justice. The ripening of the crops and fruits is seen as symbolic of the ripening of the world into fullness, before the moment of the ultimate victory over evil. It evokes the physical resurrection of the body along with its immortal soul, as promised

by Ahura Mazda. It is customary to visit the Fire Temple to offer thanks to the Creator God, to participate in a jashan or thanksgiving ceremony, to listen to stories of King Faridoon’s triumphant capture of the evil Zohak and to share in a community meal that includes dry fruits and nuts, along with a drink, dancing and merrymaking.

2nd October | THE FESTIVAL OF THE POOL/EID UL GHADEER (18h Dhul-Hijjah) | Muslim (Shi‘a) This is a festival observed by Shi‘a Muslims, for whom it is an extremely important day. It commemorates an event shortly before the death of the Prophet. When returning from Makkah to Medina after his final pilgrimage, the Prophet, who was travelling with many thousands of his followers, stopped at an oasis (the pool of Khumm) to deliver a sermon. While preaching he is believed by Shi‘a Muslims to have raised the hand of Ali, his cousin and son-in-law, and proclaimed, ‘For whoever I am his leader, Ali is his leader. O God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him’.

2nd October | GANDHI JAYANTI | Hindu Gandhi Jayanti is an Indian national holiday that celebrates the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, who is referred to as the ‘Father of the Nation’. He was the driving force behind the foundation of the state of India. His birthday is celebrated with services, prayers and painting and essay contests with topics that glorify peace and non-violence, and the singing of Gandhi’s favourite devotional song entitled ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ (Ram Dhun for short). The distribution of alcohol is banned on Gandhi Jayanti, as on other national holidays.

6th October | SIMCHAT TORAH | Jewish This festival, which means ‘Rejoicing in the Torah’, marks the completion of the annual cycle of reading from the Torah. As the reading should be continuous, a second scroll is begun again as soon as the final portion has been read from the first scroll; so, as the reading from Deuteronomy ends, with the next breath, Genesis begins without a break – the Torah is a circle that never ends.

All the Torah scrolls are paraded around the synagogue, with children dancing and singing, as do many of the adults, giving as many people as possible the honour of carrying a Torah scroll. Most progressive Jews celebrate this one day earlier, combining it with the eighth day of Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret.

Despite the promises of the French and Russian revolutions, the subsequent world remained rife with gender bias. In the end, real change for women would come from within the private sphere – in America, with activists like Margaret Sanger, who coined the term `birth control’ and developed the pill which would finally give women control over when to have children. She also discusses the experiences of women in contemporary uprisings, such as the Arab Spring and the growth of grass-roots movements in Africa.

On Monday 28th September, four girls (Emily Kennard, Kate Anderson, Grace Conley and Neve Krameia) had the opportunity to be trained by coaches from professional football club FC Porto at Lancing College.

The day started with an introduction to FC Porto’s philosophy of football and a chance to meet the coaches themselves. Once the formalities were over, it was time for the football to begin and the girls were put through their paces in a variety of drills all based on keeping possession of the ball.

After lunch, they had the opportunity to put their training into practice through a friendly tournament which the girls thoroughly enjoyed.

This week in the Sixth Form, a vegan who is a representative of the Animal Aid charity visited us.

She gave us a very eye-opening presentation on the effects of factory farming and the reasons as to why she chose to become a vegan herself. This proved to be a great afternoon, where we could voice our own opinions and have a good, old-fashioned debate. There are approximately 150,000 vegans in the UK, which makes up about 0.24% of the population. Although I don’t feel compelled to become a vegan myself, it did make me think about where my food comes from and how much I take it for granted.

The Sixth Form Leadership Team are also staying in Bath this weekend for the annual GDST Young Leaders’ Conference. Fellow GDST Sixth Form Leadership Teams will also be attending and together we’ll be taking part in team building and leadership challenges, some of which will be organised by the British Army’s Education Team. Throughout the weekend, we’ll also be working as part of a team in a competitive Apprentice-style challenge for four real charities that have been invited to showcase at the conference. These are: Barnardo’s, Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, Plan UK and The Lily Foundation.

I am delighted that so many girls will be joining us on Saturday for our Open Event. Of course it is also an ideal opportunity for you to see the school in action and you would be most welcome to join us. On the welcome evening I did a short presentation on the wealth of information that is available to parents on Firefly. I am delighted that there has been an improvement in the number of parents accessing the site; I hope it is proving useful and as always welcome feedback on how we can improve it. I am also delighted to welcome Jess Chappell to our office team. She will be responsible for finances such as parent pay, issues to do with the site and she will also be around after 4pm for general enquiries.

harvest festival A huge thank you to everyone for bringing in their Harvest gifts. I know that City Mission were thrilled with all of the donations. 2A had lots of fun learning about Harvest and what it means and enjoyed sharing their ideas with you. year 5 maths challenge Having gone to a Maths Challenge in March , the girls were more than ready to up their game and step into the Maths Vortex once again. There were 108 children at Christ’s Hospital and the girls did incredibly well placing 10th and 14th. Nothing fazed them and they did the school proud, gaining plenty of valuable experience in the process, so well done Amelia, Leah, Lila and Iona!

year 6 bikeability Year 6 were blessed with fantastic weather as they rose to the challenge of tackling Level 1 of bikeability. After some initial hesitations, doubts and fears were pushed to the side and everybody agreed it was a thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Bring on Level 2!

Our new Guild charity is “Refugee Action” (refugee-action.org.uk) The Guild monitors chose this charity because of what they have seen on the news in recent weeks.

For 30 years, “Refugee Action” has been standing up for people who’ve fled persecution, violence and harassment. They help people who have survived some of the world’s worst regimes to find the basic support they need to live with dignity. Then make sure they have the opportunity to build a safe, happy and productive life.

The Guild Monitors introduced “Refugee Action” to the school in assembly last week and reminded the girls to bring in any coins on Thursdays. The Guild total for this week got off to a great start with £79.62 which was raised by Ella B, Atlanta H, Emilia H, Jamie O and Liah S-L in Year 4 who held a cake sale at the weekend.

year 1 senses Year 1 children have been learning about the senses. There were many things to smell, taste, touch, hear and feel. Everyone enjoyed the experience- apart from the spicy wasabi paste!

reception pizza parlour Last week, to accompany our little Pizza Parlour role play area, Reception got the chance to become proper pizza chefs and made their own little pizzas from scratch!

First they came up with a recipe, using bossy verbs and lots of detail to help Mr. Keefe understand how to put one together. Then it was time to make a “pizza train” where they tested their recipe.

It’s safe to say that the recipe we created was a huge success and the girls were ‘stuffed’ after indulging!

netball v burgess hill We were lucky enough to once again have great weather for the U11-C team against Burgess Hill. The BHHS girls took the first centre and controlled the game from the start. They moved and passed well to play some very fluid netball and were soon rewarded with the first goal. Another followed shortly after and BHHS finished the quarter 2-0 ahead. They maintained the pressure throughout the second quarter; solid mid court play from Nathalie, Kitty and Jemima kept the ball in attack and by half time we had extended our lead to 5-1.

We made a couple of changes and Layla joined at C for the second half. Burgess Hill did not give up and continued to challenge, but superb defensive play from Isobel and Charlie A meant they did not score. We continued to mark tightly and anticipate play; almost all Burgess Hill moves were intercepted before they were able to shoot on goal, and we achieved many turnovers. Emma (GS) and Frieda (GA) were a great attacking partnership; Emma worked hard to create opportunities and Frieda shot brilliantly under pressure. Final score: 9-1 to BHHS. Player of the Match: Frieda, Umpire’s Player of the Match: Isobel.

U11-A The U11-A team played away at Burgess Hill on Wednesday on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

We started poorly making simple mistakes and struggling with our centre passes which were unfortunately intercepted on all but one occasion, and we trailed by 5-2 at the end of the first quarter. We then had to make a couple of changes due to injury and picked up our standard of play hugely bringing the score much closer at half time but still trailing by two goals, 8-6. In the third quarter our play continued to improve with far fewer mistakes and more fluent netball being played and as a result we were only behind by one goal 10-9 at the end of the third quarter. The final quarter was a very tight fought period of the game with both teams stepping up their play and defending well making some crucial interceptions and restricting the goal scoring opportunities and at the end of the game Burgess Hill won 14-12. Elodie was named Player of the Match by Burgess Hill and Rachael was Coaches’ Player of the Match.

The U10-A team also travelled to Burgess Hill on Wednesday and were asked to play their U11-B team as they said their U10-A team was not strong enough to compete with us. This did not faze the girls and they forged into a 3-0 lead at quarter time. The opposition were still no match for us and at half time we had extended our lead to 6-0. We struggled to keep our focus a little as the game went on and some silly mistakes crept in. Despite this we increased our lead to 10-1 at three quarter time and then 14-2 at full time. Amelia was named player of the match by Burgess Hill and Elinor was coaches player of the match for her general play, determination and great attitude to the game. Well done Ava L and Eliza for some great shooting; Amy, Amelia and Elinor for tireless work in the centre court and to Mia, Leah and Georgie for sound defending.

The U10-B teams proved to be a perfect match for one another with an end-to-end game of nail-biting netball. In the first half there was no score despite a few opportunities from both teams. Lila made an exceptional number of interceptions and then in her enthusiasm would rocket a pass to Burgess hill. Some truly athletic play from Izzy 2014-15 Issue 1: page xx

B, and stalwart defence from Ava H. Isabella P was always working hard against a strong opponent and made some great passes down to Alicia in the D. In the 3rd quarter Alicia scored, but Burgess Hill came back immediately with a goal so the 4th quarter started 1 apiece. Burgess Hill had made some position changes and looked the stronger team quickly scoring 2 goals. Lila in GD worked well with Martha to bring the ball up court giving Alicia and Isabella P the opportunity they needed. This team definitely shows some real potential. Final score 4:4 and player of the match was Izzy B. The U11-B’s played against Burgess Hill on their netball courts marked out on astro; a new experience as the ball doesn’t react quite the same way as it does on traditional surfaces but our girls took it in their stride. At the end of the first quarter it was 1-1, a quick sip of water and team chat and we started to look for our angles to keep the width in play. The second quarter saw some good defending from Sienna and Sydney, which was duly transferred down court to our attacking goal third. Jamie and Liberty worked well together, gaining confidence in shooting and having a go whenever they had the ball in the circle. At half time we had extended the score to BHHS leading 2-1.

In the third quarter, Ruby subbed on to work with Hannah and Matilda in the centre third, preventing Burgess Hill possession of the ball and fed into the circle. At half time we set ourselves the goal of 4-1 at the end of the third quarter. The pre-order seemed to work, with a further two goals scored and a third quarter score of 4-1.

In the final team tactic session we moved the positions around again to try Alice in WA and Ruby as WD and set a target of a final minimum score of 6-1. The work around the centre third was strong and the girls used the width available to them to attack the oppositions goal. Obviously enthused our score went from 5, to 6 to 7-1. Well done to all!

Player of the Match voted by the opposition was Jaime and the Umpire’s Player couldn’t be split between Matilda and Hannah.

nursery It has been the perfect weather for blowing bubbles this week and that’s what we have been having fun doing in Nursery. We’ve talked about the shape of bubbles and made our own ones in the water tray. We made bubble prints by blowing paint through a straw, watched bubbles move in a bottle and tried to catch bubbles floating in the air – that was a real challenge but caused much excitement!

PE on Tuesday mornings – please remember to send your daughter to school in her PE kit.

We have been having lots of fun in our Nursery music sessions each week. The girls have been introduced to some new puppets and we’ve really enjoyed using the parachute for bouncing a ball on top and hiding underneath. We’ve been doing plenty of singing with actions and we are learning not only how to play our instruments, but also how to keep them quiet! Look at these budding musicians having a go on some of the more special instruments in the music room.

Dear All

Christmas Fair Raffle Prizes It may only be September, but we at the PA have already started preparations for the biggest fundraising event in the school calendar, the annual BHHS Christmas Fair, which this year will be held on Saturday 28 November at the Senior School.

This is a big event for the girls across the whole school, and is a great day out for parents and girls alike. I am sure many of you who have attended in previous years will have enjoyed the visits to Father Christmas, the scrumptious food and the mulled wine and mince pies, along with the opportunity to get an early start on Christmas shopping for cards and presents. There will be a number of new stalls this year too!

As well as being a really fun day, the Christmas Fair raises lots of money for the school, a good amount of which comes from the Christmas Fair raffle.

We are hoping for a bumper year in 2015, and as part of this we are asking if parents are willing to donate prizes to the raffle. If you have a business that you would like to donate on behalf of, we would be most grateful. In the past we have had mobile phones, restaurant vouchers, teeth whitening and hairdressing vouchers amongst other wonderful and varied (big and small!) prizes.
