Dear Parents and Girls,

Welcome back and a Happy New Year to everyone. I hope parents enjoy reviewing, elsewhere in the newsletter, the festive activities that took place in school at the end of last term. I also hope the girls are looking forward to a Spring Term filled with hard work, friendship and creativity.

However, for the moment - in what are indeed dark days - I feel it’s worth reflecting on how we should value being able to come to a place of learning without fear of violence and intimidation and being able to speak, write and make comment freely without terror.

Events over the past few weeks in Glasgow, Potiskum and Paris have reminded me of the solemn duty we have as parents and educators to do everything we can to teach our daughters about both fearlessness and tolerance and, above all, to encourage them to make the most of every opportunity life offers.

Here’s to the opportunities of 2015 for all of us.

On the first day of term in cold and blustery conditions 15 girls from Years 7-11

ran in the Brighton and Hove Schools Cross Country championships held at Waterhall.

Outstanding performances came from Almi Nerurkar who finished first in the Year 8/9 race, Josephine Fast (16th) and Bea Ritchie (18th) in the Year 7 race, Grace White (8th) in Years 8/9,and Ella Witt (8th) in the Years 10/11 race. Well done to all the runners. Next week is the Sussex Schools Championships good luck!

astronomy masterclass

mathematics masterclasses Royal Institution 2014

Three of our many talented Year 9 mathematicians attended the Royal With the recent success of the European Institution Masterclasses in Mathematics at Space Agency’s Rosetta mission to land the University of Sussex during the autumn on a comet still a hot topic of conversation term. JuniorSchool Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back to the new term! I do hope that all BHHS families had a wonderful break. As you can see from the eleven match reports in this mini newsletter this week, we have certainly hit the ground running! As you know, we endeavour to offer opportunities to many girls who want to be involved in our teams and it was amazing to be able to field 11 teams against Brighton College on Wednesday. It was a wonderful afternoon and overall there were 5 wins each and one drawn match. It is so important to play teams of similar standards to make it competitive and fun and that was what was so pleasing about the afternoon’s results.

School clubs will resume from week commencing Monday 12th January

U-11A v Brighton College The U-11A team had a slow start in the first quarter with some hesitant passing and sloppy footwork. This resulted in an early 4-1 lead for our opponents. In the second quarter the girls woke up, released the ball early and saw some fantastic team work in the attacking circle. The gap remained the same at 8-5. After half time the girls came out strongly and brought the score back to equal at 9-9. The final quarter saw them pull away 13-10 with an early turnover, but with 2014-15 Issue 13: 4

minutes to go BHHS played tremendously well, keeping their heads high and concentrating on their individual targets and play and the final score was a BHHS win, 14-13. Brighton College awarded player of the game to Olivia and Coach’s Player of the Game was awarded to Holly for her fantastic feeding into the circle.

U-11B v Brighton College The U-11B team played an excellent game throughout their match. After the first quarter they were level at 1-1. They worked on their accuracy of passes and speed of play and the score remained level at 2-2 at half time. In the third and fourth quarter our defence managed to keep a clean sheet and our attack scored, giving a final score of 4-2; a great all round team performance. Brighton College awarded Players’ Player to India and Coach’s Player of the Game went jointly to Ellie and Rosie.

U-11C v Brighton College BHHS girls put in an outstanding performance in very cold conditions leading them to a welldeserved victory. Using great communication skills and spacing, the girls were able to dominate the game and set up plenty of shooting opportunities, resulting in a 9-2 win.

Charlotte was awarded Girl of the Match due to her quick thinking around the court and powerful passing into the shooting area. Insha also deserves a mention due to her strong interceptions (or “Insha”ceptions, as she calls them), allowing in only a few goals. A fantastic performance from all of the girls, well done.

U-10A v Brighton College The U-10A team started the match well and took an early 1-0 lead. Some sloppy passes followed, resulting in some interceptions by Brighton College who took the lead at quarter time, 3-1.

We changed some positions in second quarter and, despite some good play, were losing 6-2 at half time. In the third quarter we lost focus a little with some loose passing, didn’t get into space to receive the pass and were not staying tight on our opponents when they were attacking.

We still managed to restrict them to scoring 1

goal but failed to score ourselves resulting in three quarter score being 7-2. In the final quarter we again made some positional changes with Ellie moving back to WD and Sienna to GK which strengthened our defence resulting in them failing to score. The attacking play was more precise with accurate passing and much better movement and we scored three goals.

Final score was 7-5 to Brighton College. We left the match on a high and the girls now know that they can compete and will hopefully take this confidence into their next match. India was voted Player of Match by Brighton College and also our Player of the Match.

U-10B v Brighton College The U-10B team started a little hesitantly and had scored 3 goals against them in the first quarter.

It was a fast paced, end-to-end game with high court coverage and a lot of interceptions.

The team had their fair share of the play, but struggled to keep possession, and to capitalise on opportunities to get enough shots at goal. As the match progressed they improved quarter on quarter, and were rewarded with Jamie scoring the only BHHS goal of the match. Final score was 6-1 to Brighton College. Mary was nominated Player of the Match and was also Coach’s Player of the Match for her committed defensive play throughout.

U-10C v Brighton College Congratulations to the U-10 C team for a fabulous game this Wednesday. The match sure was fast and furious! By the first quarter we had taken a strong lead but by the third quarter we were equal. This didn’t faze the girls and they pushed right to the end and brought us to a wonderful victory of 8-6! The team demonstrated true team spirit with a real improvement on technical ability.

U-9A v Brighton College

U-8A v Brighton College

This game began with both teams closely matched; Brighton College were in the lead, 3-2, after the first quarter and BHHS leading 5-4 at half time. Unfortunately, in the second half they pulled away, resulting in an end score of 7-12 to Brighton College. Player of the Match was awarded to Ava.

In very cold windy conditions the U-8A team put up a good opposition. Some eager defence from Ruby and some solid work in the centre third was still not enough to get the ball into the D on more than 1 or 2 occasions. Although still no goals at half-time it looked for a moment as if the girls were going to believe in themselves and take control of the game. But their centre pass was intercepted and Brighton scored following up quickly with 2 more. Final score 3-0 to Brighton College.

U-9B v Brighton College The U-9B match was very evenly matched and the game was end to end. BHHS had slightly more of the possession and some good work between Alice and Sylvie in the circle gave us possible shooting opportunities. The team work was potentially strong and despite the biting cold wind, the girls worked hard and showed great commitment. Player of the Match and Umpire’s Choice was Sylvie. Final score 2-2 draw.

U-9C v Brighton College U-9C team played away, in cold and windy conditions, the girls held up very well. In the first half the opposition scored one goal and in the second half the girls were not put off and played even better with more attempts at goals, however Brighton College won 3-0. A mention to Chloe as goal attack and Isabella as goal shooter for real effort in trying to score. Lydia as goal keeper played very well and was awarded Player of the Match.

U-8B v Brighton College The U-8B team got off to a great start with an early goal, but by the end of the first quarter Brighton College had equalized. The girls responded brilliantly to a team talk and with a couple of team changes made, went on to score a further goal in the second quarter. In the third quarter the girls defended some hard attempts to score and with Ruby as Centre constantly on the move creating space, we finished ahead 3 goals to 1. During the final quarter the girls found space, improved on their passing and with Phoebe shooting brilliantly and fantastic support from Harriet and Ella we managed to score a further 5 goals. Final score was an 8-1 win over Brighton College. The girls worked brilliantly as a team and were willing to try new positions and listened well during the intervals. All the team should be very proud of their efforts this afternoon. Player of the Match goes to Ruby.
