Controversial schools plan is scrapped

Boundary review Will Tory plans turn city blue?

No consensus from the city on three draft options for secondary catchment areas Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

Three controversial options for new secondary school catchment areas in Brighton and Hove have been shelved. The city council asked the public what it thought about changes to catchment areas in order to make school allocation fairer for disadvantaged students and to accommodate the growing population of secondary school children. When the initial proposals were revealed, there were fears of ‘a middle class explosion’, as popular schools

Varndean and Dorothy Stringer were placed into different catchment areas in all three proposals. There were also concerns from parents about children having to travel across the city to get to school – and being split up from their friends. As there was no consensus from across the city on the three options, the council has come up with a compromise plan, which is similar to the current catchment area and leaves Dorothy Stringer and Varndean in the same catchment, along with the new Brighton University free school set to open in 2018. But a final decision on the

catchment areas for 2018/19 will be delayed, as there is no confirmed location of the new Brighton University free school. A spokesperson for Brighton and Hove City Council, said:“Itwasoriginally hoped that the committee would recommend for the changes to go out to formal consultation this autumn, as was highlighted during the engagement exercise. However, the committee will be asked to agree that changes to the admission arrangements should be delayed.” SEE PAGE 3

The People’s Republic of Brighton and Hove could be wiped from the map if changes to constituency boundaries go ahead. After the 2015 general election, Brighton Pavilion (Green) and Hove (Labour) were seen as unique islands surrounded by a sea of Conservative blue. But the Tory’s plan to reduce MPs from 650 to 600 sees radical changes to the city’s three constituencies. It leaves the UK’s only Green MP in a precarious position, as Pavilion could become a three-way marginal under the plans. See a special report on page 12, and an opinion piece on progressive alliances on page 14.

No catchment area shake up as city divided on new plans Bex Bastable

bex.bastable@jpress.co.uk @BexBastable

It was back to the drawing board for councillors tasked with coming up for new secondary school catchment areas, after there was no clear favourite from the three options proposed to parents. Now the council looks set to stick to its current catchment area plan, with a few tweaks. The three options were for: each school to have its own catchment area (Model A); the city to have four catchment areas, three with two schools in and one with three schools in (Model B); each secondary school being part of a catchment area with three schools in (Model C). But the council said after speaking to the public, there was ‘a wide variety in the priorities people expressed, but no strong consensus across the city for how best

to change the current system’. The idea behind the changes was to tackle the rising demand for secondary school places in Brighton and Hove, alongside plans for a new free school, and making admission processes fairer for disadvantaged children. The new proposals would see: the University of Brighton’s secondary free school incorporated into the Dorothy Stringer/Varndean catchment area; the southwestern boundary of the Dorothy Stringer/Varndean catchment moved west to Montpelier Road; the Coldean area of the city included in the Brighton Aldridge Community Academy (BACA) catchment area rather than in the Patcham High catchment area; and a higher priority for some children who are eligible for free school meals. But a decision on the matter has been delayed, after hold ups on the

Bus driver strike off after talks Unite members working for Brighton and Hove Buses have voted not to take strike action over bullying accusations. Bus drivers and engineers were set to strike, but successful talks with management averted the action. We are seeking to build everstronger relationships with all our colleagues and their trade union representatives.”

The upper level of Brighton’s Trafalgar Street car park will be closed from September 20-23 while repairs are made to its entrance gates on Blackman Street. The council said they were damaged accidentally by a vehicle. Drivers can still use the lower level of the car park, accessed from Whitecross Street, during the repairs.

Roadworks set to cause delays Repairs to the roundabout at Seven Dials are expected to cause delays for three weeks after work began yesterday (Thursday). The council said repairs are needed because some of the low kerbstones encircling the roundabout have broken and the roadworks were needed to ‘correct defects which led to parts of it crumbling’. Put an end to rail dispute, says Brighton and Hove Albion boss The chief executive of Brighton and Hove Albion has urged Govia Thameslink and the RMT union to end their dispute after chaos following last night’s match against Huddersfield Town. Two-day closure after pod problems PHOTOGRAPH: EDDIE MITCHELL

Brighton’s newest tourist attraction, the British Airways i360, was forced to close for two days this week because of a series of breakdowns caused by a ‘load imbalance’ and problems with the sensors. As the ride reopened on Wednesday, David Marks, chairman and architect of the i360, revealed what had caused the attraction to break down three times last week. The i360 got stuck on Thursday, leaving almost 200 visitors trapped for more than two hours, and problems continued on Sunday, when the attraction came to a halt for an hour and 20 minutes, and then again for 45 minutes. Mr Marks explained that the pod stopped on Thursday because of a load imbalance - too many visitors were on one side of the pod - which ‘triggered the default safety mode and the brakes were automatically applied’. He said: “To mitigate this, we operated to a lower capacity until we were able

to adjust the settings and upgrade the software.” As for the incidents on Sunday, he said: “One of the sensors around the pod docking stations at boarding level became loose and gave a false reading to the control system, which again put the pod into safety mode by activating the brakes. All the sensors have now been checked and tightened, and

will be monitored regularly to ensure they don’t become loose again. We have a highly qualified engineering team on site during all operating hours and we are confident that these same issues will not happen again. We would like to assure our customers that their safety and comfort is our number one priority and apologise again for any inconvenience caused.”

Rail minister has ‘arrogant response’ to travel chaos Joshua Powling

joshua.powling@jpress.co.uk @BrightonIndy

Caroline Lucas blasted the ‘arrogant response’ by the government’s rail minister to safety concerns about proposed changes on Southern services. Govia Thameslink Railway has been mired in a bitter dispute with the RMT union over plans to change the role of conductors, resulting in five strikes already this year. Conductors would become on-board supervisors, with drivers responsible for opening and closing the train doors. Passengers have faced months of disruption during the standoff and on Monday night several Sussex MPs took part in a House of Commons debate criticising Southern’s recent performance. Caroline Lucas, Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, explained that people’s lives were ‘being wrecked by the incompetence of this rail company’. She added: “Will the minister recognise, though, that many of the guards, certainly those I have spoken

to, are taking action, very reluctantly, because they genuinely believe that there are safety concerns with driver-only operation? The fact that the Rail Safety and Standards Board says otherwise should not give us any comfort, given that plenty of private rail company operators sit on it.” In response rail minister Paul Maynard said: “Drivercontrolled operation is safe. The Rail Safety and Standards Board says so, and to suggest that because it is funded by rail companies it is in some way not to be trusted overlooks the fact that we have one of the safest railways in Europe.” Afterwards Ms Lucas tweeted: “Sole opposition MP in #rail debate and not impressed by arrogant response by minister to genuine safety concerns and non-reply on compensation.” Meanwhile Hove MP Peter Kyle chaired a meeting of MPs on Wednesday to question the rail minister on the package of measures announced earlier this month, which included a £20m fund to improve Southern services.

Brighton Pride £100,000 raised PHOTOGRAPH: EDDIE MITCHELL

This year’s Brighton Pride raised £100,000 for local charities and community groups. The majority of the cash will be handed out at The Pride Rainbow Fund Grant Awards at the Hilton Metropole later this month, but £10,000 will be allocated to the Social Impact Fund, which develops projects that benefit the wider community.

Measures to cull growing council house list The council is set to update its council housing policy which will limit social housing to those who have had a local connection for five years. It will also prioritise those in ‘high housing need’, and will remove applicants who refuse just one offer of suitable accommodation. These are just some of the measures the council will use in response to a growing housing register with more than 24,000 applicants.

Last year, the local authority only managed to allocate 800 homes because of the shortage in council housing. The council has said the number of people on its social housing waiting list means there are ‘a significant number of people that the council will never be in a position to assist with social housing and therefore it is not a realistic housing option for many people in the city’. The new policy is set to be

discussed at Wednesday’s meeting of the housing and new homes committee. Cllr Anne Meadows, chair of the committee, said: “Demand massively outstrips supply in the city so it’s right that our housing register recognises this huge demand, is realistic and prioritises those in greatest need. “We are doing everything we can to provide new affordable homes in the city, including building 500 new

council homes. However, it’s important to recognise that this is against a background of growing need, and we need a more efficient allocations scheme to help make sure we can focus on those residents who need it most.” If approved, the new policy will be applied immediately to all new applications. All current applications will be reassessed under the new criteria, which is expected to take until March 2017.

The company hopes to submit an outline plan to the council later this year, followed by a detailed plan nextyear, soitcouldbeseveral years until its designs are made a reality. But first, John Lewis bosses will seek local opinion on their proposals to build a department store on the corner of North Street and Queens Road, currently the home of Boots. Andrew Mills, senior acquisitions and development manager at John Lewis, said: “We have held a long term ambition to build a new department store in Brighton and we want to hear local people’s views on our proposals.

Martin Webb (left) and the team at Emporium - an antiques shop which has replaced the Dyke Road Tavern

Pub reopens as antiques shop

A landlord who said the Dyke Road Tavern was making a £5,000-a-month loss has embarked on a new venture after closing the pub and reopening it as an antiques shop. The sudden closure of the pub has angered locals, who campaigned outside the building on Sunday, and have set up a Facebook group ‘Save the Dyke’, which now has more than 400 members. Landlord Martin Webb, who owns the pub building and has reopened it as The Emporium, explained the sudden move. He said: “I ran the pub for seven years, first as a lease then a freehold. We

were a high-end gastro pub, but that didn’t really work. Then we went more familyorientated with pizzas and burgers. It was breaking even. In the last 18 months it started to make a loss. “I also run the Stoneham and the Connaught and they are both doing really well, as they are in better locations. There is nothing wrong with the people around here they are lovely - but there is not enough of them. A lot of people would have one drink here and then get a taxi into town.” The pub closed unexpectedly on Sunday, September 4, and reopened as an antiques shop the following day. Mr Webb said: “We have upset a lot of the neighbours

and we’re sorry for that, but we reached crisis point. We couldn’t carry on losing £5,000 a month. We had a team of 12 people here, and we have found jobs for a lot of them at the other pubs. “On Sunday there was about 40 people outside demonstrating with placards. We can understand people are upset. It is a shame people didn’t show that passion for the pub while it was still open. “People think we are going to knock the building down. The building will be here in 100 years time if I’ve got anything to do with it.” But why antiques? Mr Webb said: “Antiques have always been a passion of mine. We’re taking this very seriously.”

Green light for Shelter Hall A ‘structurally unsound’ seafront building will be rebuilt and transformed into ‘a flagship commercial location for the 21st century’ after planning approval was granted. Shelter Hall, which extends underneath the A259, needs to be rebuilt to protect the seafront road above it, according to the council. The £11m project for the site – which is on the seafront in front of West Street junction with the A259 – will double the commercial space of the building.

The new structure is set to be visually similar to, but larger than, the original Shelter Hall, which dates from the 1880s. The new Shelter Hall will be home to a restaurant, a shop, and new toilets on the seafront level. Above, at upper prom level is a new rotunda, providing a café or restaurant space. The listed wooden kiosk which once stood on the spot is being rebuilt for installation on the seafront near East Street – subject to planning permission. The council said most of

the funding for the project - around £9m - has come from the government, with the remainder coming from council transport budgets. Planning committee chair Cllr Julie Cattell said: “This is a vital project to keep the seafront road operating. At the same time it will greatly improve the environment around the bottom of West Street and generate revenue which could help maintain the fabric of the seafront into the future.” To find out more about the Shelter Hall project, visit: bit. ly/2cXQAp4

The current constituency boundaries

Our constituencies in 2020,if the Tory Bex Bastable and Joshua Powling news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @BrightonIndy

Proposals to change constituency boundaries by the next general election could change the political landscape of Brighton and Hove. The Conservative government has pressed ahead with its plans to reduce 650 MPs to 600, and the draft plan has seen some pollsters such as YouGov predict a victory for the Tories in 2020 for Caroline Lucas’s Pavilion seat as a result of the changes. The Green MP’s constituency is to be renamed Brighton North, and would gain traditionally Labour wards Moulsecoomb and Bevendean, alongside Conservative wards Woodingdean and Hove Park - turning it into a three-way marginal seat. Andtheconstituencywould be cut off from the sea in new proposals, which takes away a chunk of the Green heartland which gave Ms Lucas her 8,000-strong majority in 2015. Regency, St Peter’s and North Laine wards will be taken from Brighton Pavilion and handed to Hove. Ms Lucas, said: “While

I strongly believe in equal constituency sizes – the proposals in this review for Brighton and Hove are plainly wrongheaded, and plans to reduce the number of MPs will damage, not enhance our democracy. In their current state these proposals would merge the heart of Brighton with Hove, places with quite different identities. “The proposals would also leave an entire Brighton constituency without a seafront at all – clearly taking away one of the defining characters of the area. “The idea that any Brightonian’s constituency will be separated from the sea shows a real lack of understanding of our city “These proposals are also based on inaccurate data from 2015 – rather than reflecting the huge changes to the electoral roll that have taken place this year. “In Brighton and Hove we have a particularly high population of students and young people, so to base our constituency boundaries on this old data is profoundly undemocratic.” The Hove constituency would become Brighton Central and Hove under new proposals, and would gain a

chunk of Brighton Pavilion’s constituency. Serving Labour MP for Hove Peter Kyle said: “I’m pleased that the boundary review will keep the heart of our Hove community intact. “Even after the changes it will still be the place I’ve proudly represented in Parliament, loved living in for 16 years, set up a business and been a school governor.”” Meanwhile Brighton Kemptown would be renamed Brighton East and Newhaven, and take Seaford from the Lewes constituency. The Brighton East and Newhaven constituency would contain seven wards from the existing Brighton Kemptown constituency, three of which are Brighton and Hove wards, and four of which are Lewes district wards. It would also take a further seven wards from the Lewes district, including the town of Seaford. Simon Kirby said: “I am getting on with the job I was elected to do, being a strong voice in Parliament for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven and working hard for everyone. “It is important that we cut the cost of politics and also that everyone’s vote counts

the same. The new proposals don’t apply until 2020 and if I am selected to stand again, I would be humbled to continue to serve local people, both existing and new constituents in Brighton East and Newhaven. Newhaven and Seaford are both special places that I know very well.” But why have the changes been made? The Boundary Commission was set the task of redrawing constituency boundaries before the 2020 election, bringing 650 MPs down to 600. Under the new rules, each constituency (with the exception of two covering the Isle of Wight) must contain no fewer than 71,031 electors and no more than 78,507. As Brighton and Hove’s electorate is 183,038, under the new rules it would only make up 2.45 constituencies, instead of the current three. That is why Simon Kirby’s Brighton Kemptown ward has been stretched out to include Newhaven to the east. Under the new proposals, the electorate for the new constituencies are as follows: Brighton Central and Hove 78,387; Brighton East and Newhaven 71,505; Brighton North 75,072.

The proposed changes

might look like this scheme goes ahead On Tuesday, when the plans were unveiled, Sam Hartley, secretary to the Boundary Commission, said: “Today’s proposals mark the first time people get to see what the new map of Parliamentary constituencies might look like. “But they are just the commission’s initial thoughts – during the next 12 weeks we want people to take a look and tell us what they like and don’t like about our proposals. “Parliament has set us tight rules about reducing the number of constituencies, and making them of more equal size, and we now need the views of people around the country to help us shape constituencies that best reflect local areas. “Use our website to tell us what you think, or come along to one of our public events to give us your views in person.” A public consultation event will be held at Brighton Jurys Inn at Stroudley Road, On Monday, October 31 to Tuesday, November 1. The consultation closes on December 5. To find out more about the boundary changes for each area, and to comment on the plans, visit: www.bce2018.org. uk

Political activist and campaigner

Now is the time for a progressive alliance

T

he need for an electoral alliance between Brighton and Hove’s progressive parties – Labour, Greens, Lib Dems and the others – has never been more pressing than right now. A political aeon ago, in the May 2015 general election, Peter Kyle scraped in for Labour in Hove, next door to Caroline Lucas’s more comfortable Green majority in Brighton Pavilion. Together they created a small island of red and green in the sea of blue that is south-east England – a sea that includes Kemptown, where Conservative Simon Kirby got back into Westminster because reds and greens split the progressive vote. Across the city, progressive voices cried “how?” and “never again”, while 9,000 people declared this The People’s Republic of Brighton and Hove – a republic in which progressive parties should stop bickering and stand together against further Conservative encroachment. More recently, the newish campaigning group Sussex Progressives has calculated that if Labour, Greens, Lib Dems, SNP

Caroline Lucas and Labour’s Nancy Platts once spoke of a progressive alliance in the city

and Plaid had fought the 2015 general election as a progressive alliance instead of individually and had received the same votes, a full 48 additional constituencies would have returned an Alliance MP. The Conservative government has a working majority of just 17. And now, this week, we have news of

the proposed boundary changes and their dramatic effect on Brighton and Hove. Some call this gerrymandering. If the changes go ahead, most forecasts see Caroline Lucas’s seat – in theory at least – falling to the Conservatives, Simon Kirby’s seat move from marginal to safe Conservative and Peter Kyle in a tight marginal that could depend on Greens lending him their votes to avoid a Conservative hat trick. A gerrymandered Brighton and Hove could elect Conservatives in two or even all three of its new parliamentary seats, despite the city’s political leanings. And the only guarantee against this is a Progressive Alliance – some kind of electoral pact between Labour, Greens and other progressives. But are the parties willing? Is a progressive alliance possible, in practice? Greens say yes. Caroline Lucas, who is not only the Brighton Pavilion MP but the newly elected co-leader of the national Green Party, has been outspoken in her support. The Lib Dems have yet to decide formally but local chair Michael Wilbur’s own view is that he is ‘in favour of exploring the viability

of some kind of alliance’. So in Brighton and Hove, it is the Labour Party that holds the key ... and Labour’s answer may depend on its current internal upheavals. The city Labour leadership has so far said no. Labour leader Warren Morgan explicitly rejected the idea on his blog in July and has been scathing on Twitter. But with a rerun of Labour’s local internal elections due next weekend the smart money is on a new leadership team being chosen. If Labour changes its leaders, will it also change its mind? There is now not only a compelling case for a progressive alliance in Brighton and Hove but a glimmer of hope that it might come about. Brighton and Hove Liberal Democrats, Sussex Progressives and Brighton and Hove Compass are hosting “Progressive Alliances: Panacea or Pipe Dream?” on Monday night, featuring the Green Party’s Caroline Lucas, Labour’s Peter Kyle and Liberal Democrat Norman Lamb. The Q&A event is free and open to the public, with details at http://bit. ly/PApanacea

We need change in family courts

A

round 18 months ago I didn’t know that a convicted criminal could represent himself and cross examine the victims of his crimes over, and over, and over again by using the family court. How could I get to this age and not know that? Why is it that so few people I talk to about this have the faintest idea it’s going on daily in the British legal system? One constituent I am in regular contact with has now been cross examined by her former partner on three separate occasions. The man who beat her, who broke her bones, who battered her unconscious and hospitalised her, who was convicted for his crimes, yet still has the right to summons his victim to court for a spurious custody hearing. He will never win the case but that’s not the point. He is already victorious the very second he steps into the courtroom. Because in that instant he gets exactly what he wants, which is to continue to inflict violence and abuse against a woman who has already suffered more than most of us can ever imagine. The prospect of seeing the man who created such terror causes paralysis. The faintest possibility that the abuser could get access to personal details, addresses, bank account numbers, or medical records is overwhelming. What’s most grotesque is that abusers know this. They know that family courts can be used to torment their victims, and in some cases they do so with unrelenting brutality. When you listen to survivors describe their experiences of being summonsed, of approaching the hearing date, being cross examined by their abuser, and the

aftermath there is a simple truth that is inescapable. The language and vocabulary describing their family court experience is identical to the way they describe the violence they experienced in the relationship they bravely escaped. It should shock everyone that Family Courts are being used in a way that inflicts, not ends, violence against women. Worst of all: from the abuser’s perspective, it works. One constituent told me last month that she is dropping harassment charges. This is because there is a good chance her abuser will gain access to her mental health files because he’s representing himself. She simply cannot bear the thought of him reading, and being gratified by, such intimate and personal information. Another has told me that she simply cannot face another cross examination by her convicted abuser. Abuse and brutalisation of women and families is being perpetuated via our legal system. To abusers, the Family Court is simply another tool through which to extend their hate, their violence, and their control of extremely vulnerable women. These are exactly the kind of people the state exists to protect. And that is why every day these practices are allowed to continue, shame is heaped on our system of justice and on our government. Because we have the power to stop this happening…and yet it continues. As the Brighton & Hove Independent went to press yesterday (Thursday), Peter Kyle was set to debate the Women’s Aid Child First campaign in Parliament. Challenges ahead for setting the budget

T

his month we begin the process of deciding what services the city council can provide to you, how they are paid for and what your council tax bill will be for 2017/18. The process will end with Budget Council in February, and here are some facts you need to know before we start. The council spends around £760 million a year on hundreds of different services from street cleaning to schools, libraries to homelessness, and street lighting to licensing bars and restaurants. The biggest part of our budget is social care, at around £163 million. In this budget we will have to address a predicted budget gap of £18m through savings, following a similar level of savings already being implemented this year. This is because the government is substantially reducing the revenue support grant to councils by 2020 and we have to meet growing costs and demands, across adult and children’s social services. The reduction in grant funding alone is around £27m by 2020. Our overall funding has reduced by around £45m over the last five years which, added to increasing costs and demands, has

Setting council tax for the next financial year

resulted in the very large annual savings we have and will continue to have to make. As the government grant support reduces so will the funding available for schemes such as free bus passes for older people and people with disabilities. All the surplus income we receive from parking charges, around £12.7m, goes toward funding this and other essential transport services. Similarly, we are also having to put another £1.5m into support for people who can’t afford to pay all of their council tax. The government is now also looking at councils taking financial responsibility for some NHS services.

Looking after older people, children in care and people with disabilities is already the largest part of our budget. Early estimates show that next year it will cost us at least £10m more. The government will again, through councils, allow two per cent to be added to your council tax bill to pay for this, but that will only raise £2.4m, not enough to keep up. Your council tax used to make up around a third of what we spend on general fund services, with another third made up from fees and charges and the remaining third from business rates and government grants. To become more self-financing, the government wants us to increase income from fees and charges, which includes things like registering births, pest control and planning applications. There are also uncertainties regarding business rates; the government currently retains half of our local business rates, around £54m, and will be revaluing business rates next year. We don’t know how much we will receive from business rates by 2020, so we need to ensure more businesses come to the city. As more students come to the city, fewer households pay council tax. While being a university city is part of our identity,

there’s no ignoring the financial impact of providing services to non-council tax paying households. Landlords who let properties to students are also protected from business rates by the government. Earlier this year we ran our City Innovation Challenge to find out if individuals, schools and businesses, had ideas to help out as our budgets shrink. Many said we should look to volunteering, and we have recently agreed a new volunteering policy. Meanwhile we are changing how we deliver services, with much more online, and more focus on joined up services in your neighbourhoods, designed by you around what works in your community. We are investing in bins that need emptying less so save money, in more efficient council buildings like the revamped Hove Town Hall, more partnership working and new ways to raise money by selling services. All this means you may be paying more for less, but we will make every effort to focus the money we have on getting the basics right, delivering the best services, and doing the right thing by those who need help. It is a huge and very difficult task, but we are up for the challenge if you are.

Geoffrey Theobald

Leader of the Conservative Group on Brighton and Hove City Council

Bowls and allotment price hikes are a false economy

O

ne issue that has started to hit my inbox in recent weeks is the worrying proposal by the council’s Labour Administration to cut funding to both bowling clubs and allotments across the city. At my regular Patcham ward surgery last week I had a visit from a member of a bowls club who told me that the council’s proposals could mean that they have no option but to more than double the annual fee they charge their members. He was rightly concerned that this level of increase, in one hit, would almost certainly lead to many club members having no option but to resign. In fact, they have calculated that such increases would lead to the closure of six out of the city’s 11 clubs, which in a city of almost 300,000 people is totally inadequate. Bowls is enjoyed by residents of Brighton and Hove, particularly older residents for whom it is an important way of keeping physically and mentally fit and of maintaining social interaction in later life. It is a similar story with allotments which provide enormous health benefits, as well as promoting local sustainable food production and encouraging wildlife. Yet the council is proposing to increase fees for allotment holders by 32 per cent. I am told by the Brighton and Hove Allotment Federation that many plot holders on lower wages would find this increase hard to bear. As one correspondent said in an email to me, allotments were traditionally intended

for workers on low wages who didn’t have gardens, and it would be a travesty to price them out and turn allotments into a playground for the better off. This is not the first time that this has come up. Back in 2012/13 the former Green administration brought forward proposals to increase the fees for allotment holders in the city by 70 per cent which thankfully, the Conservative group, with support from the Labour group, managed to block. Similarly, the Greens tried to introduce a huge cut in the funding provided to maintain bowling greens across the city which, following a petition from residents and a Full Council Notice of Motion from the Conservative group, was substantially watered down. And so now, it is déjà vu, with the Labour Party trying to bring in the same funding cuts that they so vociferously opposed under the Green administration. I fully accept (as do both the allotment and bowls representatives) that we should aim to make all clubs and activities supported by the council as self-sufficient as possible. However, the frustrating thing for me is that these are relatively small amounts of money which the council is looking to save, yet they have a disproportionate impact on residents. For example, the overall ‘subsidy’ for allotments across the city is around £40,000 – a relatively small amount when set against the Council’s gross budget of some £750 million. These proposals in their current form are a false economy and the Labour administration must go away and have a serious rethink.

Oh deep joy. He’s back. Rupert Campbell-Black is once again thrilling and delighting us. With a cast of hundreds, and that includes the all the delightful cats, dogs and of course, horses that star in this fabulous rip-roaring book, you will be hooked from the start. Not so much a follow on from Riders, but a standalone thrilling ride from start to nail-biting finish. Of course there’s the expected Cooper jokes and puns, there is sauce and sex, there are descriptions of races that even if you’ve never been to the horses, you will be jumping up and down waving your betting slip in your hand. But no-one, describes the joy of the English countryside better than Cooper. I can smell the wild garlic in the hedgerows, see the cherry trees waving their spring time leaves, and feel the rain on my face as she lovingly weaves her magic around you. Her attention to the detail of domestic settings and food is pure bliss and her summing up of a character by their invariable nick names is always spot on. The cut-throat world of flat racing and the rivalry that Campbell-Black generates drives the plot along. Luckily there are some firm old favourites in there as well, the angelic Taggie, and the irritating but lovable Janey Lloyd-Fox, now the widow of beloved Billy are still with us, much to my relief. This made me want to move to her imaginary county of Rutshire immediately.

Volunteer for mental health service in city A Brighton Housing Trust (BHT’s) service, the Archway Project, is looking for volunteers to assist with client activities and daily living skills at its residential properties for people with mental health support needs. Volunteers will work with clients individually and in groups with the aim of reducing isolation and increasing access to social networks and activities. Lorna Sharp, project worker at the Archway Project, said: “As a volunteer

you will be given a full on-site induction as well as training in areas such as safeguarding, professional boundaries, lone working and mental health.” Volunteer Pete Taylor said: “Volunteering at Archway gives me a real sense of achievement and fulfilment. I can honestly say I get a real pleasure out of the hope that I am changing someone’s life, be it for the afternoon or longterm.” For more information contact Lorna Sharp or Paul Virgo on 01273 748031.

Beauty Quality and integrity in beauty choices Pretty Good Thinking with Sarah Morgan @sarah_morgan

I

’m dedicating this week’s theme to the folk who got stuck up the palace of Priap. It is the hottest September day for half a century I’m on deadline but rushing to the beach straight after, so let’s cover the inevitability of armpit sweat and what to do about it. My top tip is Lafe’s Natural Deodorant Twist Stick Active in Citrus and Bergamot. The stick format has portable convenience and it is made with ‘clean and green’ tech to ensure EA (estrogenic activity)-free packaging to reduce our exposure to toxic chemicals. The divine botanical essential oils are very fresh and appealing and it is SLS free, VOCs free, parabens free, propylene glycol free, synthetic preservatives free, artificial fragrances free, plus GMO and petroleum free. It is very long lasting (four

Lafe’s Natural Deodrant

months and counting) and well under a fiver. Lafe Larson began formulating from Austin, Texas using only natural and organic ingredients in 1997. Lafe’s Natural Body Care has extended to baby ranges and hair care (including dry shampoo for red hair which looks good). Lafe’s believe in giving back; the 1% Project donates one percent of the profit from every sale to support breast cancer awareness and prevention. As my feet can introduce themselves unbidden, the Peppermint foot spray beckons next. You won’t miss the start of the Soil Association’s Organic Beauty Week this Monday (September 19)- #lookforthelogo to be sure of the quality and integrity in your beauty choices and up your game with personal care.

Neal’s Yard were the first cosmetics brand to be certified organic and today they produce the worlds largest collection of organic health and beauty. By coincidence they are launching a couple of new deodorants out this October for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Rose and Geranium or Neal’s Yard Peppermint and Lime deodorants are both £8.00 for 50ml. If you love roll on applicators these gentle and effective options are aluminium free and clinically proven to protect against odour for 24 hours, thanks to cleansing shikimic acid and absorbing bamboo powder. Neal’s Yard back ‘The Haven’, a charity helping those affected by breast cancer with support groups across the country, offering therapies, counselling and more (donating £1 to The Haven for every deodorant sold).

H.G. Wells and his fondness for Sussex

R

ummaging one day in the attics at Uppark, the “handsome great house” in West Sussex where his mother was housekeeper, young Bertie unearthed a box of brass objects which he managed to screw together to form an astronomical telescope. His mother found him in the early hours, studying the craters of the moon. Meanwhile, downstairs, there were books he could borrow, enabling him to discover Voltaire, Tom Paine, Swift. He read Plato’s Republic while lying atop Uppark Down, overlooking Harting village, and learned that the world need not be as it is currently arranged. Next Wednesday (September 21) sees the 150th anniversary of the birth of H.G.Wells. Though born at Bromley in Kent, where his father ran a china shop, Wells had Sussex roots. His mother’s parents kept inns at Midhurst and Chichester, and she had attended school in Chichester before becoming a lady’s maid at Uppark, leaving in 1853 to marry the gardener, Joseph Wells. In 1880 she returned as housekeeper (Wells claims she was “the worst housekeeper that was ever thought of”), and her son paid frequent highly formative visits.

H.G. Wells, around 1895.

The Uppark locality appears in many of his works. Siddermorton Park in The WonderfulVisit (1895), in which the vicar accidentally shoots an angel, Checkshill Park in In the Days of the Comet (1906), and Bladesover in Tono Bungay (1909), are all based on Uppark, while much of The Invisible Man (1897) is set in nearby Iping. Midhurst

also features. Wells briefly worked in Cowap’s chemist shop, where he “broke a dozen sodawater siphons during a friendly broom fight with the errand boy”, before both studying and then teaching at the Grammar School. He calls Midhurst “a happy place”, where his landlady gave him the first decent meals of his life – “her stews were marvellously honest and she was great at junket, custard and whortleberry and blackberry jam”. Midhurst appears as Wimblehurst in Tono Bungay, Sussexville in The Man Who Could Work Miracles (1899). In 1893 Wells convalesced at Eastbourne after a haemorrhage, lying each day on the “extremely stony beach”, inhaling sea air “into such lung as Providence has spared him”. A keen early cyclist, Wells pedalled in his spare time all over the southern counties in days before motor-cars existed “and the cyclist had a lordliness, a sense of masterful adventure, that has gone”. In The Wheels of Chance (1896), draper’s apprentice Hoopdriver cycles liberatedly through Sussex, with scenes at Midhurst, Chichester and Bognor. There is also a short story, A Perfect Gentleman on Wheels (1897), in which Cecil Crampton cycles from London to Brighton (or

does he cheat by catching a train midway?). Wells and his wife used to “wander about the south of England, very agreeably” on a tandem, and there’s a theory that the iron octopi in which the Martians stride across the Thames in The War of the Worlds (1898) were inspired by Brighton’s newly opened DaddyLong- Legs railway. Brighton features fleetingly elsewhere. In The War in the Air (1908) there is reference to “the great iron standard of the London to Brighton monorail” (we still await its construction), while in Tono Bungay an airship passes over Brighton. The Shape of Things to Come (1933) mentions “the remains of the old dining-room of the Hotel Metropole at Brighton, before it was undermined and fell into the sea”. Science-fiction pioneer, socialist, visionary, Wells predicted aerial warfare before planes flew, tanks before tanks rumbled, atomic warfare before the atom was split, and even Wikipedia. Only time travel and alien invasion remain to be justified by events. It’s only with his later enthusiasm, in book after book, for a world state, that I part company with “H.G.”, whom I otherwise greatly admire. One person’s utopian dream is another’s dystopian nightmare.

Promoting diversity and equal opportunities through tech

T

here’s a quote from The Internet Society, a global organisation committed to ensuring that the Internet stays open, transparent and diverse, that sticks with me. “Know that you have allies. Lots of them. While no one can argue that the number of women in tech is low – it’s definitely not zero. The industry is full of creative, gutsy women who are either building technology or using it to build more things.” It’s an important message and living in a city like Brighton, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by a thriving digital support network. Especially during September when Brighton Digital Festival reminds us of the significant contribution that women make to this city’s creative industries. During this year’s annual celebration of digital culture there

are many events that showcase women working with technology. Phoenix’s exhibition, Technology is Not Neutral, a name inspired by the work of cyber-feminist Donna Haraway, investigates the work of female artists in the digital arts. At Radio // Future Sounds, a day focused on innovations in radio, diversity is key, with panels dedicated to gender diversity in radio. In the contemporary, neoliberal patriarchal landscape, the value of community is often undermined. Despite this,

community events for women working in tech in Brighton are booming. Each with major events in the festival programme, the following groups are a few of the many on offer with a strong focus on inclusivity and diversity. There’s Brighton Digital Women, a community meetup founded in 2015; codebar, which offers free weekly programming workshops for women, LGBTQ and people from under represented minority groups; and SheSays Brighton, the local branch of global creative network

The Old Market Virtual reality experience

for women in digital. As Rifa Thorpe-Tracey, organiser of SheSays, said in an online digital conversation I hosted on International Women’s Day 2016, “The numbers speak for themselves. SheSays went from 50 members to 900 since 2011.” Diversity and inclusivity are necessary components to a creatively and economically thriving industry. Unfortunately, the tech industry falls short when it comes to recognising this. That’s why we’re committed to broadening the reach of the festival to groups that are not traditionally well represented within it. We all know representation is important; if she can’t see it, she can’t be it. It was therefore a thrill to see our Royal Institution Computer Science Masterclass with young girls making up 80% of the class. Turns out that by seeing it, she’s being it.

Bridging the gap between arts, commerce and technology Storyhack 2016: Theatre meets virtual reality at Brighton Digital Festival Emily Yates

news@brightonandhoveindependent.co.uk @MsEYates

The Old Market’s #TOMtech series launched this week with Monday’s Storyhack conference, which succeeded in that rare feat of bringing a world class line-up to a truly collaborative space and format. The event was hosted with an incredibly light touch – moving through talks, revolving panel chairs and finally separating the audience into working groups to do what they were there for – to ‘hack the story’. Opening with the New Radicals section meant that the day began not only on an inspirational high, but also with three of the leading minds in virtual reality (VR) laying out the context for its participants. If you don’t live in the world of ‘digital’ you’d be forgiven for failing to notice the Zeitgeist about to happen, with several of Storyhack’s commentators noting that we now stand in the ‘punk era’ of VR. Virtual reality has been the dream of the future for decades. It’s been said that it’s ‘about to happen’ before, and one can only cringe when looking back at 1980s and 90s attempts at market creation – when VR technology meant giant headseats, a maze of wires; and certain nausea. In fact, just two days ago Apple CEO Tim Cook came out in favour of augmented reality (AR) as the far bigger market; claiming that the VR experience is too ‘closed off’ and inhibited by the headset to ever become mainstream. Whether VR or AR, the Storyhack conference

Virtual reality has been the dream of the future for decades was highly self-reflective about the need to create a common language capable of bridging the gap between arts, commerce and technology. The Zeitgeist we are now talking about is best described as ‘Mixed Reality’ (MR) according to Marshmallow Laser Feast’s Robin McNicholas; who showed no mercy towards the marketing language behind the industry, joking that the ‘experiential sector’ has led him to sell himself no longer as a ‘creative technologist’ but the far more glamorous ‘experience architect’. Along with the challenges in redefinition is an issue that now rules the global discussion of VR – the ‘content drought’. With the release of HTC Vive three months ago, the company also announced a $10 billion content development fund; part of what McNicholas calls a ‘gold rush’ in the USA. An incredible amount of money and resources now exist, but are centred in Silicon Valley and Hollywood; which even hosts BAFTA’s VR consortium. Traditional models of research and development are insufficient for the new possibilities of ‘mixed reality’, and this is a fact that The

Old Market is a UK leader in coming to terms with. James Turnbull’s aim with the #TOMtech Project Labs was to create ‘breathing space’ for artists simply to philosophise and experiment around these new concepts. OverthecourseoftheBrighton Digital Festival, this has included the ongoing Lab 360; a group of artists creating a ‘hacked’ manifesto for making art in 360, and three highly experimental commissions due to reach the stage next week: Pattern Recognition, SuperEverything and Hacked on Classics. After a fascinating week of discussion and experimentation at The Old Market’s VR Lab, I am left with two conclusions; both sources of great inspiration for the future. The first is the ‘punk’ movement around VR – which could not be better demonstrated than by Simon Wilkinson of CiRCA 69, who put together his ‘Slave to Mortal Rage’ just five weeks ago with local coders in Sarajevo. Not only has he proven himself a pioneer in artistic ‘transmedia’ work, but one gets a sense that he is acutely aware of the democratizing potential of open-source software like Unity. A little less punk, but far more local, are the proposals around creating new hubs for ‘horizontal collaboration’ between artists and technologists. The presence of Digital Catapult’s Richard Scott at Storyhack presented a serious invite to create this culture here in Brighton, and the organisation is now inviting applications for two VR residencies at their centre, along with a VR meetup at The FuseBox on September 29.

Fastest growing tech firms in the UK PHOTOGRAPH: SARAH KETELAARS

Two Brighton and Hove companies have been recognised in a list of Britain’s fastest growing private technology companies in the prestigious Sunday Times Hiscox Tech Track 100. Ideal, a Brighton-based IT service provider, was named the 47th fastest growing technology firm in the country. And Crunch, a Hove-based cloud accounting specialist, has once again been included in the Sunday Times league table, at number 100. It’s the second year in a row that both businesses have been listed in the top 100 table. Last year, Ideal increased its turnover by 60 per cent to £9.3 million, with a staff base of 49, propelling the company up the league table to 47th position. Ideal was founded in April 2009, and the team now offers its IT solutions to brands such as the Rugby Football Union, One Family, Gala and international law firm Rouse. Last month, Ideal

Darren Fell and the Crunch team

moved to its new 6,000-square foot offices in the CityView building in central Brighton. Claire Hopkins, managing director at Ideal, said: “I am thrilled to return for the second year running to the Sunday Times Tech Track 100. It’s a measure of how far our company has come in the last few years and we’re determined to continue growing and meeting our

new targets. We will always be committed to understanding our clients’ business needs and providing brilliant service to them. This industry accolade is a sign that our investments are paying off and we can continue to grow organically in the coming years.” For Crunch, the accolade follows a year of growth for the micro-business specialist,

which expanded its revenue to £6.7 million, with year-on-year growth of 34 per cent. Crunch also increased its team to 170 and their client base to 9,000. Founded in 2009 by CEO Darren Fell and accountancy director Steve Crouch, Crunch is the first UK firm to offer online accounting software combined with expert, in-house accountants and customer service

support. Its rapid growth was also recognised in the annual Accountancy Age 50+50 list, where its was named the sixth fastest growing firm in the country. Mr Fell said “We are thrilled to be included in the Tech Track again this year. The future is very bright for Crunch as more micro-businesses choose us as their business and

accountancy partner. We are also preparing to move into larger premises in central Brighton to accommodate our growing team of talent, which is set to expand even further in coming months. It’s great to see Brighton’s thriving tech scene being celebrated on a national scale and, once again, to be recognised as one of the UK’s fastest growing fintech companies.”

Building high-quality links to your website

with Izzy Crouch, digital marketing consultant

T

he three letters S, E and O can strike fear into the hearts of business owners. SEO, or search engine optimisation, can be bewildering at its best, and an expensive disaster at its worst. The most confusing part of SEO is link building. Generally, links are good, but too many bad links can see you banned from Google. Your links need to be from high quality and relevant sites to count, and here are five easy ways to gain them that you might be doing already: Network: It is no good sitting in your office waiting for the links to

come to you. You have to get out and meet people. Nothing works better for digital collaboration than talking face-to-face. Most networking groups have their own directories you can add your website to as well. PR: Good old fashioned PR skills are as important as ever in the digital age. Get people talking about your business and soon you will find that bloggers want to start writing about it and linking to you as well. Advertise: Digital channels should only be part of the marketing mix. The chances are that you will be using more traditional communication channels as well as digital ones. However, publications from industry magazines to newspapers have online versions, so when you are bartering over the price of the advert, ask for a link on their website as well. Outreach: Are you a bit of a knowit-all in your field? Do people look up to you and value your opinion? If that’s the case, then ensure you spread your knowledge far and wide by contributing to blogs, chatting to journalists and speaking at events. All of these activities will bring you fantastic publicity and good, honest links. Charity: Being involved in

charity is great for businesses and the local community. From raffle prizes, providing a football kit for a local kids’ team, or donating hard cash to a charity, any organisation you contribute to is likely to have a website and link to their benefactors. Digital marketing consultant, Izzy Crouch of IZC Marketing, led a recent Bite-sized Learning session on ‘To pay or not to pay: pay-per-click v organic marketing’. Healthy eating keeps you happy Matthew Bateman

(Doctor of Chiropractic)

Diets are obvious aren’t they? Should we eat less fat and cut out carbs? Or should we only be eating plantbased and gluten free foods only? We usually focus on

eating smaller portions and healthy food to change the way we look but we should focus on how our food choices can affect us internally and the way we feel. Instead of “dieting” simply change your habits and incorporate a healthy lifestyle change for the better. Encourage your family to eat healthy foods with you and plan in advance your meals for the week before doing the weekly shop. I follow many health gurus on social media who show me new

ideas in videos making healthy meals to cook which are quick and cheap. There are a huge amount of ideas that we can access on our mobile device which are a great source of healthy exciting recipes to make for your families. We live in a world where this information is easy and we only need to follow a few social media profiles to make this change. Spend time now on your mobile now to search health and fitness chefs then follow them on social media, then get new ideas for healthy recipes before your next shop. When healthy eating is combined with physical fitness and psychological happiness you can make changes in your overall health. If you know you are going to have a stressful week you need to make time for the gym and you need to be strict with your diet.

However if you have been segregating your stress levels, completing consistent exercise then feel free to enjoy a lean steak and organic vino with your family.

Managers should focus on quality ahead of volume say marketers

Celebrations as three-in-one mega store opens up in Hove

Nearly half of marketers are unconvinced of the quality of their marketing database and believe senior management should focus more on lead quality than lead volume. In a wide-ranging survey of 100 mid to senior level B2B marketers across the UK, respondents revealed anxiety about the sheer quantity of unqualified leads entering their CRMs and consuming valuable sales efforts. More than 50 per cent of organisations admitted passing Automation Qualified Leads (AQLs) direct to sales with no further offline qualification. Clare Warren, head of sales and marketing at The Telemarketing Company, said: “The survey showed that adrivetoincreasethenumber of leads in the funnel, without sufficient consideration of whether these leads will actually progress towards a sale is dangerous to the overall productivity and

effectiveness of the sales operation,” “The fact that a whopping third of marketers (34 per cent) rate themselves quite ineffective, or worse, at ensuring only the most appropriate leads progress, speaks volumes about the over reliance of marketing on technology to perform a qualification function, best achieved by a human,” she said. Marketers recognised the increasingly positive role technologies such as Marketing Automation can play in their lead generation efforts. However, the survey revealed that 35 per cent of marketers believed poor data was preventing them getting the most out of their marketing investment. Clare said: “It may seem an obvious point, but when it comes to data, no amount of analytics or technology will bring any benefits unless clean, accurate data is the

starting point. “This isn’t just a case of finding and eliminating duplicates and introducing new prospects into the database to make it more responsive; there needs to be a coherent plan for maintaining and updating existing records on a regular basis.” Despite an awareness that poor data was behind many of the challenges facing today’s marketer, only a handful (6%) sought help from external agency specialists to cleanse their data. One factor behind this may be the lack of appropriate budget being allocated to marketing departments. The findings of this survey highlight that human interaction remains essential. Established in 1990 and based in Brighton, The Telemarketing Company is the UK’s leading specialist outbound B2B telemarketing agency.

Stephen Webb and Chris Steed of Googlebox fame

“We’re absolutely delighted to have little Amelia join us to officially open our bigger and better megastore, and Stephen and Chris on hand to help showcase the new state of the art TV department. They know more than anyone the importance of having a fantastic TV to watch all of your favourite programmes

on in crystal quality and high definition.” Over the weekend Currys PC World promoted a range of offers celebrating the opening of the three-in-one store, including money off iPads, TVs and MacBooks. Currys PC World said the new mega store has created 15 new job opportunities.

Scottish alt-blues singer Dave Arcari follows up the release of his latest EP, Hellbound Train, with a live show at Brighton’s Komedia on Thursday, September 22. Released on Buzz Records, the EP features three new tracks from Dave plus a version of Son House’s classic ‘Pearline’. Other than the release of ‘McPherson’s Lament’ as a digital single to mark Burns’ Day earlier in the year, this is Dave’s first release in three years – and pre-empts a fulllength album, Givers & Takers, which is scheduled

for release in early 2017. “I’ve been working on a whole bunch of new songs for a while,” says Dave. “But despite plans to record and release them long before now, things have been so busy on the road there just hasn’t been time – not that I can complain about that!” Dave’s style of blues is influenced by trash country, punk and rockabilly as well as pre-war Delta blues. His Hellbound Train EP entered the iTunes blues charts at number seven in June this year. Dave’s previous album, Whisky in my Blood, was released on the Finnish record label Blue North in March 2013. As well as showcasing his trademark National steel guitars,

songs fuse ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk rock.” The Beat released three studio albums in the early 1980s: I Just Can’t Stop It (1980), Wha’ppen? (1981) and Special Beat Service (1982).” Call the box office on 01273 673311. Vibrant festival proves that punk’s not dead – it’s just Undercover Festival review Nick Linazasoro

Contributor nick.linazasoro@jpress.co.uk

Undercover Festival, Brighton Racecourse, September 9-10 Brighton has been extremely fortunate this year when it comes to festivals. We kicked the season off with the tremendous Great Escape and last weekend it was time for the Undercover Festival. This was the first time Undercover has been held in Brighton, having moved from its previous home in Surrey. And I have to say, when I heard it was taking place at the racecourse, I was a bit dubious as to whether the venue would be able to conjure up the right atmosphere. But it turns out it was a perfect choice. There were three stages (all inside) and the whole event had a feeling of happy, friendly and relaxed harmony. More specifically, it felt like a little punk/ska/ reggae hamlet, like Camden Lock in London. There were people of all ages, from seven to 70, milling around and taking in the vibe. There were four of us covering the festival, trying to see as many bands as possible. We planned as best we could, creating a ‘must see’ list, a ‘wouldn’t mind seeing’ list and a ‘let’s take a punt’ list. This covered half of the acts. So who were the acts we managed to see? Well, in stage time order they were: Day One: No Lip, Charred Hearts, Menace, Tree House Fire, RadioRental, The Tuts, Department S, Peter and The Test Tube Babies, Pig City Angels, Chelsea, The Selecter, 999, Criminal Mind and The Sex Pistols Experience. Day Two: Vikki Vortex, Piranhas Four, Rage DC, 1919,

Dreadzone

Pauline Black

Dragster, Emergency Bitter, Witchdoktors, Church of Eon, Pussycat and The Dirty Johnsons, Spizzenergi, XSLF, Sonic Boom Six, Spear Of Destiny, Dreadzone, AMI and Eddie and The Hot Rods. It was quite a line-up of the old and the new of punk, ska and reggae bands. The mix worked really well and, on a personal front, it allowed me to tick off a few acts that I’d always wanted to see but never did, so a big thumbs up for Mick the organiser. I heard certain songs I thought I had no chance of ever hearing live – songs like ‘Is Vic There?’ by British post-punks Department S, ‘Tom Hark’ by the skainfluenced Piranhas Four and ‘Do Anything You Wanna Do’ by Eddie & The Hot Rods. I mean, these songs are legendary and can usually be found on the latest indie music compilation CDs. But there were many other acts I took a shine to... All-female indie punk band The Tuts, for example, epitomise multi-cultural Britain. They have so much energy on and off stage and you can see them for yourself at the Green Door Store on October 7. Their best tracks were ‘Worry Warrior’ and signature tune ‘Tut Tut Tut’. Department S, the post-punk heroes who are

thankfully gigging again, were the surprise hit band of the weekend. Their best songs were ‘I Want’ and ‘Is Vic There?’ Peter and the Test Tube Babies are the ever-present Sussex stalwarts Mr Bywater and Mr Greening (et al). They play comical, fast ‘Oi! Oi!’ punk in between supporting The Albion and drinking cider. Their best tunes were the rowdy ‘Banned From The Pubs’ and ‘Moped Lads’. Chelsea (Gene October and his pals) offered enjoyable Mick Jagger/Iggy Pop style posing and pouting mixed with old-school punk. 1919 are a goth-tinged postpunk group from Bradford that I had forgotten about despite owning their debut album. Their best tracks were the pounding ‘Control’ and the strangely droning ‘Repulsion’. Spizzenergi (an eccentric but nice bloke called Spizz and his gang) play selfindulgent, fun rock music with plenty of charm and a few shiny gadgets. Spear Of Destiny, one of Kirk Brandon’s alter egos (along with Theatre Of Hate), performed a mix of classics and newer songs. The catchy, thumping ‘Liberator’ and the haunting ‘Grapes of Wrath’ were their best numbers. Dreadzone are a British multi-cultural team who are best known for their fusion of dub, reggae, electronic dance and rock. Their best tracks were the euphoric ‘Little Britain’ and anthemic ‘Captain Dread’. The weekend was full of great moments, but maybe the most amazing part was The Selecter’s Pauline Black. She’s 63 next month but looks and performs like she’s 36. You go girl! Fingers crossed that Undercover will be back in Brighton next year. Visit undercoverfest.com.

to offer without breaking the bank.” Andy tells me. After our ride on the i360 we headed to one of the city’s best pubs, The Brighton Beer Dispensary, for a quick pre-meal pint. With a wide range of beers on both cask and keg with ciders and spirits to match it has something for everyone. Operated as a joint venture between Brighton Bier and London brewery Late Knights their beers feature strongly in the relaxed and classic pub environment. Feeling slightly lubricated and certainly peckish our first food stop was at one of my favourite restaurants in the city. Bincho Yakitori on Preston Street is a Japanese Izakaya style restaurant that specialises in grilled skewers (Yakitori) that are some of the most delicious things I’ve eaten in ages. Not content with serving incredible Yakitori they also have exquisite salads, fish, vegetable and fried dishes that are served as they are cooked, much like Spanish Tapas. We are served a number of dishes all of which are an absolute delight and go down so well they manage to keep the whole table quiet on occasion – no easy feat. The unbelievably tender pork belly is a favourite with the crispy chicken skin and Korean Fried Chicken all similarly delicious. Everything on the menu here is

great so you cannot really go wrong. Next up we paid a visit to The Set at The Artists Residence in Regency Square. This modern and inventive restaurant has been wowing guests since it opened. The main restaurant operates a set menu style of dining that is complemented by the more relaxed The Set Café. This was my first visit to either so I was really looking forward to trying the food. Co-owner and joint head Chef Semone Bonner greeted us and brought out a selection of dishes to sample. A fermented carrot tartare impressed and had everyone questioning their taste buds, in a good way. The crab mac n cheese with celeriac remoulade and harissa mayo was both comforting and indulgent in equal measure. The stand out plate was a mackerel dish with capers and crisp batter topping that was rich, sharp and layered with textures. We left with a small bag of delightful handmade sweets and I made a note to return soon. Our final stop was for a spot of dessert at The Salt Room with matching cocktails. We started with a delicate peach parfait with mascarpone followed by homemade Jersey yoghurt with macerated strawberries and strawberry jelly. Each of these fruity numbers was just a prequel to their signature “Taste of the Pier” dessert. A veritable feast of sugary delights and playful adaptations of classic seaside icons, it is an impressive sight that really packs the wow factor. All of the venues we visited will be giving you the chance to sample their delicious morsels as part of OctoberBEST later in the year. I for one cannot wait for this event and look forward to seeing all the special menus and deals that you can take advantage of. To keep up to date

with the event and for a full listing of participating restaurants head over to www.brightonsbestrestaurants. com and get the dates in your diary for what promises to be one of the culinary events of the year.

magine eating in some of Brighton’s top 20 restaurants, as voted for by local experts, for just £20. Just think about booking at table at 64 Degrees, The Chilli Pickle, Plateau or Terre a Terre (to name but a few) knowing that your bill would cost as little as a night out in a standard chain restaurant. How great would that be? Well in the words of Gabrielle, dreams can come true. Some of you may remember the Brighton’s Best Awards that took place back in February of this year – don’t worry if you can’t it was a long time ago – where Brighton’s best 20 restaurants were voted for by local writers, chefs, bloggers etc. Well the people behind that have come up with a new festival where those top 20 restaurants will be offering special menus or offers for just £20. The inaugural OctoberBest will be taking place between the 17th and 30th October celebrating the exciting and vibrant restaurant scene in the city. The launch took place on the 1st September with a special “grub crawl” around some of the venues that will be taking part. I went along to get a taste of what OctoberBest is all about and meet the men behind it. Our grub crawl started with a ride on the i360 where I was joined by a selection of the great and the good of the local and national food writing community. I arrived early and took the opportunity to speak to Andy Lynes, food writer/author and one of the team behind the event, about why they decided to start OctoberBest. Inspired by cities such as New York that hold similar events, Andy and fellow Brightonians Euan Macdonald (60 second reviews) and Patrick Mcguigan (food writer) co-founded the festival to celebrate the quality and diversity of Brighton’s restaurant scene. “OctoberBEST’s great value menus are the perfect way to explore as much as possible of what the city has

he story of waffles begins with a waffle iron, or rather a wafer iron, or rather a communion-wafer iron. Sorry, I’m waffling. Don’t tut, it’s rude. In the 9th and 10th centuries, communion-wafer irons were circular metal plates which were squashed onto the batter/dough/whatever. They were embossed with graphic religious imagery - Jesus on a cross etc - which was therefore branded onto the wafers. Wafer irons not for communion were also available, and they too had the religious thing going on, but less hardcore – maybe the whale bit? Or the very beginning? But literally the very beginning because it goes downhill more or less straight away. The ingredients were grain flour and water. Nice. The Crusades created an influx of semidecent ingredients and therefore a rise in the popularity of waffles. So much so that the waffle makers formed a guild in 1270. In the 15th century, cheapskates cut their circular irons into rectangles; everyone else just bought a new rectangular one. Everyone except the King of France - he had a solid silver one made. Bon appetit, Monsieur – how very a la mode of you. You’re so avant-garde. In 1560, the first waffle-legislation was established. It stated that no waffle maker could set up shop within four yards of another waffle maker. In the 17th century, sugar was an expensive luxury – twice the price of opium – so sweet waffles weren’t really a thing. The expansion of the Caribbean sugar plantations in the 18th century halved the price of sugar, and the waffle business boomed. I say boom boom boom, now everybody say wayo. In the 19th century, commercial production of beet sugar took off in Europe, and when sugar could be put in a whole manner of stuff, why bother with a waffle? Exactly; they didn’t; waffles were unpopular again. In 1918, the first electric waffle maker was invented, and waffle making became less of a professional craft and more of a housewife’s hobby. In the 1930s, a dry mix was released for general sale, and in 1953 we reached a new low when someone created frozen waffles. Since then it’s got worse – in Vietnam you can get a pandan waffle (it’s green), there are plenty of potato waffles on the market (mainly sold in Ireland. No, really), and someone has even made hotdog waffles (it’s exactly what you think and it was probably the Americans). Just one more thing – waffle mix and pancake mix are not the same. I don’t care who told you that they are – they were wrong. They’re different, so stop it. End of. (waffles have a higher fat content)

A crowd of more than 36,000 visitors turned out for Beaulieu’s 50th International Autojumble with 2,378 stands crammed with motoring treasures and elusive spare parts for classic car enthusiasts.

That first year I hired a 1965 Ford Transit and brought along an Austin Seven engine, which sold for £10, while I also sold a set of Riley engine valves for halfacrown.Ihavehadastand ever since, with help from my friends and family. Fiat returns to the roadster market with 124 by jonathan crouch

Fiat is at last back in the roadster market with this appealing little 124 Spider model writes Jonathan Crouch of www.caranddriving.com.

There’s nothing especially innovative about the familiar engine and borrowed underpinnings but everything’s beenwoventogetherintoadesirable package that offers a tempting blend of Latin flair. It’s been over ten years sinceFiatbroughtusanopentopped roadster - the muchloved Barchetta. That was based on front-driven Punto architecture and sold only in limited numbers. This 124 Spider though, looks to have much more than that to offer, its name referencing the Pininfarina-designed 124 Sport Spider of the 1960s. This modern model borrows its underpinnings from the best affordable roadster on the market, Mazda’s MX-5, though Fiat has decided to fit its own 1.4-litre MultiAir turboenginebeneath thebonnet to replace the 1.5 and 2.0-litre

normallyaspiratedunitsused by Mazda. The idea is to bring theauthentic,Italianroadster driving experience to a whole new generation of British enthusiasts. The design of this 124 Spider may borrow much from Mazda’s rival MX-5, but what

lies beneath the distinctive bonnet is all Fiat’s own. Here, you’ll find the brand’s proven 1.4-litre MultiAir, turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine which delivers 140bhp and 240Nm of torque to the rearwheelsviasix-speedmanual transmission and a com-

pact rear differential. This unit is capable of accelerating to 62mph in 7.5 seconds andhasatopspeedof134mph. If that’s not enough, there’s a pricey Abarth variant with a 170bhp version of this same engine and a limited slip differential to better get torque

to the tarmac. The 124 Spider’s suspension uses a double-wishbone layout in front and a multilink set-up in the rear, specifically tuned for greater stability while braking and turning, while the dual-pinion electric power steering system

has been specifically tuned to give the Spider a responsive, Italian feel. We’ve yet to drive the car but it should indeed feel different from its MX-5 rival, if only because Mazda declines touseturbochargedpowerbeneath the bonnet.

Knockaert hails a big three points against Huddersfield PICTURE BY ANGELA BRINKHURST

Anthony Knockaert hailed a big three points after Albion ended Huddersfield’s unbeaten start to the season on Tuesday. The Seagulls’ French winger scored the only goal of the game ten minutes from time when Terriers keeper Danny Ward let his low strike slip through his hands and into the back of the net. The victory ended a three-game winless run in the Championship for Brighton and lifted them up to seventh, five points behind Huddersfield, who had won five of their opening six games heading into the match. Speaking after the win, Knockaert said: “It’s a big three points, even if it is still early to talk about the table because it’s a long league. “But we didn’t doubt last week, even when we looked at the table and saw how far we were from the first team. “We just need to take it game by game, work as hard as we can and we know we’re going to be up there at the end.” The win came after back-to-back 2-0 defeats, at Newcastle before the international break and at home to Brentford on Saturday. Knockaert admitted the team were glad to be in action again so quickly after

Saturday and said: “When we lost that game, we were so excited to be back playing tonight and to get back to winning ways, so we’re really happy to win the game. “We needed to be patient against a good shape and wait for an opportunity to score. “It wasn’t easy because there’s no easy game in the Championship. The only thing you can do when you cannot score is keep the

shape and stay focused and that’s what we did.” The goal was Knockaert’s fourth in just seven games this season, although it might not be one that lives long in the memory. He said: “It’s not the best goal I’ve scored in my career but it was a perfect time for us to score and I’m really happy to bring the three points to my team-mates. It’s not just about the goal,

everyone worked so hard and we could see today the team spirit.” Knockaert enjoyed playing in the number-ten role behind Tomer Hemed – a position he had not played in since he was in France four years ago – and is now looking to build on the win away to Burton Albion on Saturday. Burton were promoted from League One last season

and have picked up nine points from their opening seven games this season. Knockaert is expecting a tough game and said: “When you win games, you are always confident for the next game but we know it’s going to be a tough game again. “Burton away, or even at home, there’s no easy game in the Championship. We just need to stay focused and try to win the game.”

Albion look to build on win over Terriers Brighton & Hove Albion

Steve Bailey

Chris Hughton is hoping Albion will build on their win at home to leaders Huddersfield when they travel to Burton Albion tomorrow. Brighton returned to winning ways at home to the Terriers on Tuesday evening to end a three-game winless run in the Championship and also inflict a first defeat of the season on the leaders. The victory lifted the Seagulls up to seventh in the table after seven games but Hughton admits his side’s form has been hit and miss so far this season. Albion will look to pick up a first away league win of the campaign when they travel to Burton tomorrow and speaking after the Huddersfield win, Hughton said:“IfIlookatourform,Istill think the best performance was away to Derby, so we’ve been a little bit hit and miss. “Hopefully this win will kick-start us a little bit and we’ll try to get a result

at Burton.” Brighton had lost 2-0 at home to Brentford on Saturday and Hughton knew the importance of returning to winning ways quickly against Huddersfield and felt it was a big three points. He said: “The feeling in the changing room after the game on Saturday was low and you want that. What we can’t do is keep talking about last season but if we’re talking about this group of lads, they’re a team that want to do well. “They know how to and we’ve seen some of the results at the minute and we know how tough this league is. Whether it’s a Huddersfield or a Barnsley or a Burton, these are all big games and you can’t do well if you don’t have enough character in the team. “We have got that but it’s probably just our quality that has let us down at times.” After Saturday’s trip to Burton, Albion then entertain Reading in the third round of the EFL Cup on Tuesday. The sides have already met in the league this season, drawing 2-2 at the Madjeski Stadium last month.

Sussex prefer 18-team domestic competitions PICTURE BY PHIL WESTLAKE

Sussex say their strong preference is domestic tournaments feature all 18 first-class counties after an agreement was reached to approach a new eight-team T20 tournament. Agreement was reached to carry out wider consultation on the proposal on Wednesday at a meeting of the chairmen and chief executives of the first-class counties, MCC and the PCA in the latest stage of on-going discussions about the future structure of domestic cricket and how to drive interest and participation at all levels. The T20 eight-team tournament would run alongside the T20 Blast but Sussex were one of three counties to vote against the eight-team proposal. In a statement yesterday, Sussex said: “We recognise the current financial risks to counties, including over dependence on international income, and the opportunities to develop interest in the game, including the changing media landscape. “The board is open to considering change in the schedule but our strong preference is that domestic tournaments should feature

all 18 first-class counties. “We respect the consensus view of the first-class counties and the MCC, that was expressed on September 14, to ask the ECB Executive to work up details of a new eight team T20 competition. “This new tournament would be staged in addition to the existing NatWest T20 Blast. There is much work to carry out on many issues before the game will be in a position to give agreement to the proposed new schedule. “Sussex Cricket will continue to participate in this process in a constructive way.” ECB chairman Colin Graves said: “The next steps for us all, as a game, will be to extend the discussions and get valuable input from players, members and other key voices across the game.”

Seagulls targeting first away Sussex lose a thriller by 11 runs to Worcestershire league victory at Brewers Burton v Brighton preview

After ending their run of three games without a win earlier this week, Brighton will head to Burton Albion tomorrow intent on coming away with all three points for the first time on the road in the Championship this season. There was little to separate the Seagulls and league leaders Huddersfield at the Amex on Tuesday, with the game looking set to end in a scoreless draw. However a fumble from Terriers keeper Danny Ward gifted Anthony Knockaert the only goal of

the game with ten minutes remaining. Chris Hughton will be hoping his side can use that winning boost when they head to the Pirelli Stadium, to face a Burton side who have looked very capable since gaining promotion from League One last season. The Brewers reached the Football League for the first time in their history in 2009, and spent five years in League Two before sealing back-toback promotions to make it to the second tier of English football. After leaving to join Derby when they were at the top of

the Conference seven and a half years ago, Nigel Clough returned to the club he spent over a decade at as playermanager last December, steering them into the Championship. Brighton’s defence will have to be at their best because their Staffordshire opponents have scored in every league game so far this season, picking up wins over Sheffield Wednesday and Clough’s old club Derby. Sussex suffered a 11-run defeat in a thrilling County Championship Division 2 match with Worcestershire this week. Chasing 272 to win in the final innings, Sussex recovered from 113-6 thanks to a 114-run partnership between Chris Jordan (50) and David Wiese (70 not out), before they lost their last four wickets for 33 runs. Worcestershire scored 306 and 194 as Steve Magoffin picked up ten wickets in the match. Sussex hit 229 in their first innings, before they fell

run out just before lunch and we were 113 for six. CJ (Chris Jordan) and I decided there was no point going into our shells, we wanted to be positive because if you hung about on that wicket you would eventually get knocked over. “They took two really good catches and Miguel Cummins kept coming in hard at the end. It was a terrific game and it’s just a shame we couldn’t get over the line.” Worcestershire coach Steve Rhodes said: “It was a great game and a fantastic advert for Championship cricket.”

The surge of excitement rarely diminishes in sport Cup, it could be a three-foot putt that determines the outcome. Each and everyone of us as sports fans has particular memories of a dramatic moment or win. If you are an Albion fan, you will have plenty to choose from, whatever the decade. Storer. Ulloa. Sandaza. The surge of excitement rarely diminishes in sport as the years go by. I fully expect a few more defining moments across the season. There will be ups and downs like Middlesbrough on the final day in May. My suggestion is we don’t assess until the October international break. By then, Albion will have played 11, yes 11, games. That’s around a quarter of the season and not a bad time to decide how long we may need to grown our fingernails for the rest of the campaign.

New boss Hill hoping to turn Whitehawk’s fortunes around Whitehawk Football Club

Newly-appointed manager Richard Hill is hoping to turn Whitehawk Football Club’s National League South campaign around. Hill, 52, guided Eastleigh to the National League South title in 2014 and took over from sacked Pablo Asensio at Hawks last week. A tough opening to the season had seen Argentine Asensio collect just one win from eight league matches before Hawks’ board decided to make a change. Looking at Whitehawk’s results to date, Hill knows a tough challenge awaits but it is one he is relishing. He said: “I want to win football matches at this club. I’ve been out of work for 12 months and I’m looking forward to getting back involved now. “After speaking with the board, I liked the ambitions and aims that they have. I’ve got a decent track record in this league but this is going to be a tough challenge for me.” Following his appointment last week, Hill has acted quickly and has brought in four new faces. Both Reece Connolly and Ben Strevens, who worked with Hill at Eastleigh, have agreed deals, while he has also raided his former side to bring

risis, what crisis? As concerns started to grow after back-to-back defeats, Albion had to use a little luck to beat the Championship leaders Huddersfield this week but they fully deserved all three points. You don’t always get what you deserve in sport but most would agree that across the nine or ten months of the football season a team will finish in the right position. There is no doubt that the Seagulls face another huge challenge to compete with some of the other teams in the division, however more resolute performances will help. Only 24 hours after the slender victory at the Amex, Sussex cricketers fell agonisingly 11 runs short of a win over Worcestershire. It may have been a dead rubber but small margins once again. Across the summer in Rio at the Olympics and Paralympics so many medals have been decided by tenths or hundredths of a second. At the Ryder
