No Gatwick Express

Free parking call

Sea water investigation

Commuters who usually use the fast-track service to London were disappointed this week after the cancellation of the Gatwick Express. The popular service did not run because of work being done to transform London Bridge. Some of Southern’s services were diverted to Victoria while First Capital Connect’s Thameslink did not operate to, or from, London Bridge. The temporary changes will have inconvenienced many Brighton passengers already upset at increasing prices.

People visiting sick relatives in hospital should be given free or reduced parking, believes a Brighton Conservative. Clarence Mitchell is standing for election in Brighton Pavilion next year and has backed government guidance encouraging reduced parking charges for certain groups. He said: “Charges at the Royal Sussex County Hospital multi-storey car park being just above the daily average of £9.56 in the southeast are in my view already far too high.”

Bathers have been warned to steer clear of West Hove beach while an oil leak at Shoreham Port is investigated. Locals had complained of an oily smell at low tide and managers of the port have carried out extensive work to identify the problem. Warning signs have now gone up advising people not to swim in water near the east end of the concrete wall while further work is carried out to pinpoint the leak and stop it.

Racist abuse probe

800 home lose power

It may not yet be September but one local church is already making plans for Christmas. St Margaret’s in Rottingdean is holding its first ever Christmas Tree Festival on the weekend of Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 7. Father Martin, vicar of St Margaret’s, said there would be around 40 decorated trees and that the proceeds from the event would go to The Martlets Hospice. Entries are being accepted now online at www.stmargaret.org.uk.

Ebbsfleet United are investigating claims one of their supporters was racist after their recent game with Whitehawk at the Enclosed Ground. The Kent club are responding to complaint from a Hawks fan following Saturday’s match. Anyone who saw the incident is encouraged to contact Ebbsfleet by calling 01474 533796. A spokesman for Ebbsfleet United said: “The club does not tolerate any racism or discrimination and fully supports the efforts of Kick It Out.”

An estimated 800 homes in Kemp Town and Whitehawk suffered power problems on Monday. Brighton Marina, Manor Way and Sussex Square were among the areas hit by power loss at around 9pm in the city’s latest energy problem. Firefighters were called to a substation in Whitehawk amid reports of a bang and smoke but found no evidence of a fire. Some homes experienced problems without suffering total outage. Power was restored within half an hour according to UK Power Networks.

Brighton and Hove Albion

England call-up Jake Forster-Caskey, the Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder, has seen his encouraging recent form rewarded with a place in the next England under-21 squad. He will join up with Gareth Southgate’s squad for a pair of Euro qualifiers against Lithuania and Moldova. Solly March misses out due to his back injury but highly-rated young goalkeeper Christian Walton has been picked to play for the England under-20s team against Romania next month.
