GENERATION RENT ■ Parties
go to war over housing
Richard Morris @BrightonIndy They are the generation who have been denied a foot on the property ladder: young people priced out of buying their own home by a demand that far outstrips supply. They are “Generation Rent”: stuck in rental accommodation - at the mercy of private landlords and letting agents, scrambling for the few affordable homes on sale in the city. But they may have more power than they imagine. It looks as if they could decide the outcome of next May’s elections in Brighton and Hove. Nearly one in three homes (32%) are privately rented in the city. As
the main parties begin to jostle for vital votes, Generation Rent seems likely to find itself at the centre of the battle for their votes. Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion, has disclosed plans for a housing charter for Brighton and Hove, calling for better-quality and secure housing in the private rented sector and more affordable housing across the city. In her bullet-point plan, Ms Lucas wants to end letting-agent fees, to lift the cap on council borrowing to allow the city council to invest in a substantial programme of sustainable council housing, and to introduce five-year tenancies as standard as a first step to giving tenants and landlords long-term security.
Ms Lucas is not alone in targeting Generation Rent. Purna Sen, her Labour rival for Brighton Pavilion, has launched a consultation looking into a range of issues surrounding housing and has backed her party’s three-point plan to woo floating voters. Like Ms Lucas, she wants to see a ban in upfront fees charged by letting agents and favours more long-term tenancy deals, calling for a three-year standard for the private sector. Labour has also pledged to put a stop to landlords terminating contracts purely to put rents up. It is easy to see why the city’s politicians focus on housing. Trust, wrote to local candidates of the main political parties asking for their take on the city’s rental problems, receiving responses from all but two: Peter Kyle, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Hove, and Nancy Platts, Labour’s candidate in Brighton Kemptown. Mr Winter said: “Nationally, there are 87 constituencies where the voting intentions of Generation Rent will influence the outcome. “Locally, we have marginal seats. And, given that Brighton has a higher than average number of people who are living in privately-rented homes, the seats are likely to be high up on that 87.” In response to Mr Winter’s request, Clarence Mitchell, the Conservative candidate for Brighton Pavilion, said the central problem was the lack of supply of new housing. He added: “Our political opponents claim the reintroduction of a limited form of rent control would solve the problems. We believe it wouldn’t. Rent controls have failed in the past by actually reducing the UK’s private rented housing stock and they would again." Councillors turn down plan for 4,000 homes for students, see page 16

SPECIAL INVESTIGATION by Greg Hadfield @BrightonIndy The younger brother of Jugal Sharma, - the suspended head of housing with Brighton and Hove City Council - runs a property company that has received up to £20 million in taxpayers’ money to provide homes for the homeless. Ashley Parker - previously known as Ashone Sharma and Ashoni Parker - is a director and majority shareholder in KEM Property Services Limited (KEM), which has provided temporary accommodation in Brighton and Hove for nearly a decade. Mr Parker, 51, became a director in March 2008; he became a shareholder in February 2009. By which time, KEM owned at least six houses in the city - using mortgages with the Royal Bank of Scotland that totalled more than £3 million. A number of properties sub-let by KEM were reportedly owned at the time by Mr Parker, but the company paid the mortgages on them. Today Brighton & Hove Independent publishes details of

Armed Forces Day takes place tomorrow (Saturday) and will be marked locally with a parade by the Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment (PWRR). The event is part of a programme of events to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One. Soldiers from the PWRR will march from the Peace Statue on Hove seafront (starting at 11am), along the seafront, up West Street and end on North Street.
Council workers, civil servants and school support staff will strike on July 10 because of a row over pay. Members of the NUT and Unison will lead the walk-out and union bosses are hopeful the strike will be supported by the GMB, PCS and Unite. The row centres on the Government’s one per cent pay offer which unions say represents a real terms cut.
Brighton and Hove has been ranked third in the UK in terms of growth among small and medium sized businesses. The Centre for Cities research highlighted the way business conditions in different cities have helped stimulate growth. Jason Kitcat, leader of the city council, said: “I’m delighted the city has been recognised as one of the best places in the country for businesses to grow.”

Valley Gardens work will boost city economy Richard Morris @BrightonIndy The transformation of the tangled transport route into central Brighton could boost the city’s economy by £39million over the next 20 years. Brighton and Hove City Council has already approved the improvements to Valley Gardens, in principle. The proposed changes include the planting of hundreds of trees, simplifying the complex traffic system, a 700-metre cycle land and enhancing existing green spaces. Those behind the plans believe the alterations would improve journey times for cars, bikes and public transport. The city council hopes to tap into the Coast To Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), which has a regional growth fund aimed at boosting business and has already agreed in principle to £8million funding for Valley Gardens, as long as a successful

business plan is forthcoming. Councillors will next week be asked to approve that business case and submit it to the LEP. If agreed, the £8million will be spent on the stretch between Pavilion Parade and St Peter’s Church. The council will also contribute around £1million from part of its budget which is ring-fenced for transport. An estimated financial boost to the economy of approaching £40million over two decades is based on criteria which looks at the impact a scheme will have on business links, tourism, new housing and a range of other areas. The outcome of the proposed business case submission is expected by the autumn, with work then likely to run from mid2015 until early 2017. Councillor Pete West, chairman of the environment committee, said: “It has long been an aspiration of the city to improve this and I’m so pleased we are now in a position to do just that.”

Green light for traveller site Controversial plans to open a permanent traveller site in Brighton will go ahead. The South Downs National Park Authority had already given the site, which was identified by the city council, its blessing following a consultation in February. Now Eric Pickles, the communities and local government secretary, has decided against calling in the plans - meaning the scheme is free to go ahead. The permanent site is next to the recently reopened traveller transit site at Horsdean and funding will come from a Government grant. The plans were drawn up by Brighton and Hove City Council, which chose the plot ahead of 50 other potential sites across the city. The development will include 12 new permanent pitches, a kitchen, bathroom and dayroom.
The traveller liaison team will also be moved to building on site and tenants will have to sign a secure tenancy and the site will be aimed at members of the travelling community with local links. Elsewhere, an independent councillor is calling on the three main parties to support her calls for better protection of public parks from travellers. Councillor Christina Summers plans to submit a motion to the next meeting of the local authority asking the council’s chief executive to contact Katy Bourne, Sussex police and crime commissioner, demanding “urgent action” to protect residents and businesses. She said: “The regular presence of traveller groups in the public parks has led to the feeling among residents and businesses that their own wellbeing and livelihoods are no longer adequately protected by the police.”

Fat, lame, in hock to usurers, and not yet famous, Lord Byron, aged 20, descended on Brighton on June 16 1808. Lodging for the summer in a house on the site of the present Albemarle block in Marine Parade, he was accompanied by his Cambridge chums John Cam Hobhouse and Scrope Davies. He also brought with him a 16-year-old blue-eyed cockney girl called Caroline Cameron, whom he dressed in boy’s clothes and tried to pass off as his brother – an early instance of cross-dressing at Brighton. They went riding together, but Lady Jane Perceval, who “had some suspicion of the real nature of the relationship”, one day remarked to this pantalooned person: “What a pretty horse you’re riding.” “Yes, it was gave me by my brother.” (Byron sent her back on July 20.) John ‘Gentleman’ Jackson, the celebrated pugilist, also visited, to provide boxing lessons, “the expense of the professor’s chaise thither and back being always defrayed by his noble patron”. This impressive character, who could sign his name with an 80-pound weight balanced on his fingers, dressed dandyishly in scarlet jacket, lace cuffs and silk stockings. On August 12, Byron attended the Prince of Wales’s 46th birthday celebrations at the still unfinished Royal Pavilion. (In Don Juan, he would rhyme “the Pavilion” with “cost us all another million”.) The royal George was fatter and even further in debt than the poet George, though Byron thought his abilities “superior to those of any living gentleman”. One day Byron went swimming with Lincoln Stanhope and they got into difficulties. The wind was off-shore, the

tide drawing out. “Crowds were collected on the beach to see us,” Byron recalled years later. According to Hobhouse: “Lord Byron did not touch Mr Stanhope; he very judiciously kept aloof, but cried out to him to keep up his spirits.” Hobhouse and others “sent in some boatmen with ropes tied round them, who at last dragged Lord Byron and his friend from the surf, and saved their lives”. Another time, after dining with Lord Delvin and a French count, Byron, Hobhouse, Davies and Major Cooper “did about the middle of the night proceed to a house of gambling,” having between them 20 guineas – necessary, in Byron’s words, to maintain “whoreson horses and servants, besides household and whorehold expenditure”. They lost the lot. Returning home, Cooper retired while the others, “it being high summer, did firstly strip and plunge into the sea, whence, after half an hour’s swimming, we emerged in our dressinggowns to discuss a bottle or two of champagne and hock at our quarters”.
A drunken quarrel arose. “Scrope seized Hobhouse by the throat. Hobhouse seized a knife in selfdefence and stabbed Scrope in the shoulder to avoid being throttled. Scrope fell bathed in blood and wine – for the bottle fell with him – being infinitely intoxicated with gaming, sea-bathing at two in the morning, and supplementary champagne. The skirmish had passed before I had time or thought to intervene.” The wound proved “long and broad, but not deep nor dangerous.” Scrope wanted to fight, or leave by postchaise, or shoot himself – Byron amicably offered to assist in the latter, “provided that he did not use my pistols, which, in case of suicide, would become a deodand to the king”. Finally he was got to bed. “In the morning, cool reflection and a surgeon came and, by dint of loss of blood and sticking plaster, the quarrel was healed as well as the wound, and we were all friends as for years before and after.” Graham Chainey is a freelance writer living in Brighton and Hove
Husband and wife authors make library donation A pair of authors who moved to Brighton from sunny Spain have donated copies of their most recent books to local libraries. Harry and Chris Duffin upped sticks and left Spain for the leafy suburbs of Westdene earlier this year. Mr Duffin, an award-winning TV writer, whose credits include Eastenders, Coronation Street and Howards’s Way, donated copies of his first novel Chicago May, and another book, The Birth of the Mall
Rats, which is based on the teencult TV show The Tribe, which the writer co-created. His wife, Chris, who had a 20year career as a UK prison governor, donated copies of Jail Times; an amusing memoir of her time as a woman in the largely male prison service, including being the first woman into the notorious Dartmoor Prison. The couple presented the books to Nigel Imi at Brighton’s Jubilee Library which was recently named
the UK’s second busiest.

Pride director’s message to the city Paul Kemp Director of Brighton Pride Brighton Pride is the single most popular visitor attraction in our city’s event calendar, bringing almost 2% of our annual visitors in just one amazing day. In 2014, we expect over 160,000 people to gather to watch the spectacle that is the Pride Community Parade as it winds its way from Madeira Drive to Preston Park, with a further 40,000 guests celebrating at the Preston Park Festival, as the UK’s biggest Pride event dominates the first weekend in August. The city’s tills will be in meltdown as an estimated £13.8 million is spent in businesses across Brighton and Hove over the Pride weekend. But it is important to remember that Brighton Pride is more than

On August 2, when the Pride Community Parade marches its traditional route through the city centre, it will include 78 placards representing each of those countries where homosexuality is still illegal. In the year that the UK celebrates the advent of Equal Marriage, Brighton Pride will take the opportunity to use the media spotlight to focus on our LGBT brothers and sisters living in countries such as Oman, Somalia, Dominica, India, Tonga, Russia, Egypt and Iraq who do not enjoy the freedoms that we can so often take for granted.

Alternative Ageing by Suzi Grant Brighton is full of ‘em. You know, alternative therapists. I’m not knocking them, but I’ve never known anyone to go to one and be told: “You know, there’s nothing I can do for you, off you go.” No, what usually happens, it seems to me, is that they ply you with unspeakably vile herbs and stick needles into unmentionable places. But...I know a lot of people who swear by them, and who’s to say otherwise? And I defy anyone who wouldn’t like to hold back the ravages of time, without resorting to the knife. Or botox. This is the book for you. The introduction seduced me from the beginning where Grant states that she
“wants to grow old gracefully, disgracefully and, most importantly healthily.” She was a chain-smoking, harddrinking journalist (and though she’s managed to give up the fags I’m delighted to tell you that she sees nothing wrong with a glass of red now and again). The book is broken into helpful sections that tell you how to improve, skin, hair, stay fit, look better, sleep better and stay healthy. The section on supplements was really useful, as I am often overwhelmed with spurious advice and bewildered about free radicals, good fat versus bad fat and what exactly omega 3 does for us all. It turns out that bee pollen is particularly good for us all and after reading what it claims it can do I am racing off to the local health shop. Must fly, got to go.
The Live Stage at the Preston Park Festival will also give a platform to campaigners from this country and beyond to demonstrate why even in 2014, we really do need to keep on campaigning for the Freedom to Live. Closer to home, Brighton Pride also performs a very important function in raising much needed funds for our city’s frontline LGBT organisations. So Jason Kitcat is baling out at the next election. Smart move on his part, as he would doubtless otherwise be made to look a complete fool if simply booted out of Regency ward. I am aware of several others who are making the same sensible career move to avoid humiliation. However, who have we really got to replace them? With a few notable exceptions, the 54 councillors we have allowed to grace our town hall in recent years are a pretty pathetic bunch, to say the least. We should halve the 54 immediately to 27 and certainly no more than 30. We need to upgrade the quality of elected councillors. For the avoidance of doubt, being a complete numpty is not a qualification for becoming a councillor, so that would automatically get us down to somewhere near where we need to be as far as numbers are concerned.

Jason Gray, a nurse from the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, has made it onto the shortlist of a national nursing award. Mr Gray was nominated for the Pioneering Emergency Nurse category at this year’s Welch Allyn Pioneers Of Care Awards after he tirelessly campaigned for a dedicated children’s emergency department with trained children’s nurses. The awards ceremony will take place on July 18 at The Royal Institute of British Architects in central London.
A fire has destroyed a stash of props used by the long-running satirical theatre company the Treason Show. Mark Brailsford, who has directed performances for the past 13 years, said: “The fire destroyed everything including a much-loved Zippy puppet, Patrick Moore’s wings and the Queen’s dress which we’ve been using for years. The show will go on even if I have to appear naked.” The next Treason Show takes place at the Ropetackle in Shoreham on Saturday, July 12.
Work has started to install solar panels on the roof of another building at the Portslade end of Shoreham Harbour. Brighton Energy Co-op, the organisation behind the project, said the panels on the south side of the port will generate more than 200,000kWh of electricity every year. It comes hot on the heels of similar schemes involving Shed 10 and Hove Enterprise Centre at the port and on the roof of nearby City Coast Church in North Street, Portslade.

Walk from Scotland A dental hygienist walked 500 miles from her home town in Scotland to Brighton to raise money and awareness of mouth cancer. Christina Chatfield, who works at Dental Health Spa, visited 32 cities during her trek, which finished on Brighton beach. The school in Hangleton Way, Hove, has been praised for its modern approach to learning and had the tablets ready to give to new students starting in September. A University of Brighton technician has won a national award for his work in the field of health education. Principal Technician Rob Jefford is among the first group of people to win new Health and Social Care Technicians of the Year awards from the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Mr Jefford has been working as a technician in education since 1981 and joined the University of Brighton in 1988.
A disused pitch and putt course could become part of a neighbouring nature reserve. A proposal has been submitted to the city council to include the Rottingdean Pitch and Putt as part of the Beacon Hill Nature Reserve. The Friends of Beacon Hill Nature Reserve want to set up a learning centre on the council-owned site and extend the boundaries of the nature reserve. The proposal will be discussed by councillors on Tuesday (1 July).

Bird of prey rescued A young peregrine falcon had to be rescued after getting trapped in netting seven storeys high at the Hilton Brighton Metropole. The bird, believed to be just a few months old, was suspended in mid-air between two parts of the seafront hotel and was spotted by an eagle-eyed guest. The RSPCA and fire service were called and the bird, which hotel staff nicknamed Metro, was untangled and brought down to safety - suffering feather damage
but thankfully no broken bones. Firefighters used an aerial platform during the rescue. Metro has since been taken to the RPSCA’s Mallydams Wood Wildlife Centre in Hastings for care before hopefully being released back into the wild. It is thought he is part of a family living in nearby Clifton Heights. RSPCA inspector Tony Woodley said: “It is the time of year when falcon parents are teaching their youngster to fly and we think he could have got caught in the netting during one of his first lessons.”

Champion joins charity school swim Sunshine, sparking sea and a former Olympic breast stroke champion helped make a pier-topier charity swim a success. Duncan Goodhew, who won gold and bronze in Moscow in 1980, joined 25 Southern Water staff and contractors as they swam 1km from the West Pier to Brighton Pier. True sportsman that he is, Duncan held back and coasted in third. The swimmers, who included Simon Oates, one of the company directors, raised more than £2,500 for WaterAid, which is the water industry’s official charity. Cecile Stanford, senior process scientist, who lives in Hove and is based at Falmer, organised the challenge. She said: “It was particularly great to have Duncan there. Quite a few people have already said they want to do it again next year.” Speaking after the swim, Duncan said: “What a super bunch of swimmers Fitness
Free summer swimming for Brighton Local under 16s are being given the chance to swim for free this summer by Freedom Leisure, the company which runs local sports centres and pools. Children can swim for free all summer long, including the August Bank Holiday, with the offer running until at least April 2015. Grants available for Brighton Digital Festival events Brighton Digital Festival is offering ten grants of £500 to organisers of events which will celebrate digital arts and culture. Organisers will use the festival’s Grassroots Fund

initiative to provide the funding to independently organised events after also receiving backing from Brighton and Hove City Council. The ten awards, intended to support members of the
community by contributing towards the costs of organising events for the festival, are open to all but applications must be received by July 4. Grassroots Awards given last year supported a wide range of events, including an alternative exploration of the Royal Pavilion from singer/songwriter Christ T-T. It also supported a body-scanning and 3D printing installation from 3Dify, and a night of competitive video gaming as performance art from The Fight Lab. The Grassroots Fund has been created to support projects that will engage a diverse public audience. To qualify, events must take place in Brighton and Hove between September 1 and September 28, be open to the public, show consideration of audience development and report back on audience engagement.
Jesse Black Mooney, festival manager for Brighton Digital Festival, said: “The passion and innovation of the Brighton community is the driving force behind the richly diverse programme of events that take place as part of the festival in September. “Thanks to the amazing contributions from supporters like Brighton and Hove City Council, we are incredibly happy to be offering up these awards of £500 to support outstanding community-led grassroots events for Brighton Digital Festival." Some of the orders were delivered up to five months late, costing Gresham Blake Ltd penalties and loss of major contracts. “In total we are disputing £17,502.00 of invoices with an outstanding balance of £4,008.00. Gresham Blake Ltd has always been willing to pay once our invoicing dispute is resolved. “On paper Gresham Blake Ltd believe that we are right. We are willing to discuss this situation with Amit Daruka and have repeatedly asked him to do so. “He refuses to meet and explain the Amit Daruka says Gresham Blake Ltd owes him £24,000 differences.” A popular city centre tailor has endured a week-long protest outside his city centre shop from a man claiming the business owes him £24,000. Amit Daruka planted himself outside Gresham Blake’s Bond Street store earlier this week, armed with a placard demanding money he claims the business owes him. It has led to the tailor and his staff being subjected to threats and abuse from passers-by, with Mr Blake even being spat at by someone siding with Mr Daruka. The designer, however, said it was not as simple as just owing

When Sussex University asked planners for permission to build 4,000 homes on its Falmer campus, there was a first-class degree of confusion. Officials at Brighton and Hove City Council recommended approving the plans, which involved demolishing about 1,500 student flats on the campus to make way for the new buildings. If approved, the proposals would also have meant replacing some academic facilities and building a new life sciences centre on the campus. There were also plans for a new road for cars and delivery vehicles, with Refectory Road becoming a route for cyclists and pedestrians. But councillors said: "No." And the reasons they gave made little sense to some onlookers. The university intends to grow by 4,600 students over the next four years. It wanted to house most of those students on its

campus. This would, among other things, have meant that those students were not renting homes on nearby estates. Some campaigners, nevertheless, asked where the extra students would go, insisting they would put extra pressure on the local housing stock. The university suggested that about one in five of its extra students would come from the local area or not need housing and Allan Spencer, its finance director, even said in answer to one question: "Refusing this application will put more pressure on local accommodation." Nobody seemed to grasp that the students will be coming anyway. They will now have to compete with local people for somewhere to live. And, as so many of them will now have to live off campus, they will add to the pressure on local roads and bus services. The old student flats already on the campus would have been knocked down to make way for new bedsits. So those who choose a campus home will stay in tired old buildings.
And classrooms - described by Councillor Leo Littman, a planning committee member who went to Sussex University, as past their sell-by date even back in his day - will not now be replaced with 21st-century facilities. Councillor Les Hamilton pointed out that students were exempt from paying council tax and this costs the council millions of pounds a year. Now, students who would have lived on campus are likely to live in houses and flats that currently yield council tax. This will further reduce the council's income. The formal reasons for rejecting the university's proposals included the loss of more than 400 trees, although many new trees have already been planted to compensate for those which would have been for the chop. The university has not yet decided whether to appeal, resubmit its plans, or rethink them. After a meeting regarded by some as a qualified failure, an appeal might seem the most rational option.

TAKEPART Festival gets off to a flying start
More than 10,000 people joined in an afternoon of sport, dance and activity in the sunshine at the launch of the TAKEPART Festival of Sport and Physical Activity in Preston Park. The two week festival is organised by the Sports Development Team at Brighton and Hove City Council which works with local sports clubs and groups to promote the range of activities which take place across the city with the aim of helping people lead active lifestyles. Since the launch event on Saturday, thousands of school children have had the opportunity to take part in athletics competitions and try out activities such as paddle skateboarding, surf lifesaving, and golf. Business Mayo Wynne Baxter announces merger Leading solicitors Mayo Wynne Baxter is merging with established law firm Stuckey Carr & Co. It is the third merger the law firm will have completed in the last two years following the acquisition of Allen Ticehurst solicitors in East Grinstead during 2012 and Forest Row firm PR Vince last year. The completion of this deal means Mayo Wynne Baxter will have eight offices in Sussex, including long-established bases in Eastbourne, Lewes and Brighton.
Stuckey Carr & Co was established in Sussex in 1843 and senior partner, Robin Carr, is the third generation of his family to have been at the firm. Along with partner, Peter Jones, Robin will remain as a consultant postmerger. Young business talent search underway after launch event A project aimed at helping young entrepreneurs turn their business dreams into reality is underway for the third year. Young Start-Up Talent is the brainchild of Matt Turner, MD of Creative Pod – a design and marketing agency, and Lorraine Nugent, MD of PR agency Media Word Waves. The competition is open to locals aged between 16 and 25 with a flair for businesses and this year’s competition got underway at Latest Music Bar, where both founders appeared on a panel of guest speakers alongside Latest TV’s Bill Smith, Natalie Evans of 42 Juice and comedian Lynn Ruth Miller. The team behind Young Start-Up are working closely with Latest TV – the city’s soon-to-air Freeview TV channel - and earlier this week announced filming of a six part fly on the wall documentary following the project’s progress throughout the year. It was also announced at the launch that Peter James, international bestselling British writer, will be joining the judging

panel for the new TV series. Hilton Metropole ball raises £65,700 for charities A ball at the Hilton Brighton Metropole raised £65,700 for a pair of charities. The event, which took place on Saturday, June 21, was in aid of the hotel’s charitable wing, the Hilton in the Community Foundation, which helps young people across Brighton, the wider UK and in Europe have a brighter future. The other beneficiary is local children’s charity Rockinghorse, the official fundraising arm of the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and a vital supporter of the Trevor Mann Baby Unit based in Brighton. The Mid-Summer Ball was a Brazilian-themed event, reflecting the spirit of the World Cup, and organisers welcomed back Zoe Ball who acted as head judge for a Strictly Come Dancing style dance competition. Zoe, TV star and presenter of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing spinoff show It Takes Two, was joined on the judging panel by David Hill, CEO of entertainment group E3, and professional dancer Marta Scott. Four celebrities and local personalities had been in training to learn a Latin inspired dance, joined by their expert partners.Those brave enough to take on the challenge in front of nearly 400 guests, were: Richard Skerritt, managing director
of Skerritts; Andrew Austin, director of Austin Rees; Davina Wells, executive director of Brighton Racecourse; and much-loved children’s TV personality Sid Sloane. The competition was won by Richard Skerritt who wowed the judges with his samba, along with professional dance partner Carola Degener-Pereira, owner of Brighton Dancing. Hosted by the team at the Hilton Brighton Metropole, guests enjoyed a sparkling drinks reception, four-course dinner with wine and after dinner entertainment which included live music from Back in the Day, a fundraising auction and indoor dodgems. Speaking after the Mid-Summer Ball, Howard Lewis, Hilton Brighton Metropole general manager, said: “The night was a culmination of a lot of voluntary work and effort by the ball committee who came together to deliver an excellent event. “I am also so proud of the whole team who have helped to raise money for the Hilton in the Community Foundation and Rockinghorse Children’s Charity and I am already looking forward to planning next year’s event.” Ryan Heal, Rockinghorse Children’s Charity chief executive, added his thanks to everyone who

Pub undergoing major refit A haven for beer lovers has temporarily closed for major refurbishment. The Craft Beer Co. in Upper North Street opened two years ago and has won a loyal following of ale fans, offering a range of cask ales and some of the finest important beers from around the world. Martin Hayes, the current owner, is investing heavily in the pub, which will be closed until Friday, July 25 while improvements are made. Mr Hayes said: “When we reopen we will have increased the trading space by three hundred per cent by adding a beautiful upstairs lounge area. It has been the case that in busy times people struggle to find a seat to enjoy their drink, so we hope that these changes will make that a little easier. “I’m really excited about the changes we’re making to the pub and I can’t wait to get the scaffolding down and re-open.”

Creating a world-class seafront that
As work is finally about to begin on i360, a leading city architect outlines hi Andy Parsons @yeloarchitects
Many areas of Brighton and Hove are evolving rapidly as new development occurs. It feels, however, as if our unique seafront continues to languish as it has done for many decades. I cannot help but feel that a truly visionary masterplan is needed to restore its importance as a tourist destination. I am sure the council recognises this, which is why it has supported the i360 financially. I am really excited by the i360 and hope it is the catalyst for change right along the seafront. There are a number of other key sites that I would expect to see as part of any seafront masterplan: The King Alfred Centre The site should have a brief drawn up for a mixed-use scheme, with residential towers sitting above bars and restaurants - and with no sports centre. The council should then sell
the site to a private developer on the open market and use the revenue generated to build a dedicated sports centre at a better location.

King's House Another key site owned by the council. Again, it needs a planning brief. But I would suggest, when it is sold, the buildings are demolished and a new residential scheme with towers is built. West Pier I would love to see a new modern cultural pier on the seafront, something like a Brighton Guggenheim, designed by Frank Gehry; his Bilbao Guggenheim is magical. Our city desperately needs art gallery space and I would combine it with a hotel tower at the end, with its own landing dock for cruise-liners to visit. Hilton Brighton Metropole and The Grand Both of these hotels occupy huge sites on the seafront. I could see
Coastline residential towers being built towards the rear of their sites. The Brighton Centre and Odeon It is tragic that we have two large - predominantly window-less boxes occupying prime spots on the seafront. I would propose demolishing them both, building a new conference centre, with extensive quality office space,
much-needed in Brighton. Ideally, there would be another residential tower.
Eastern seafront, including Peter Pan's playground Sadly, another area that is not what you would expect of a unique seafront. I say build a park along the full length, linking Brighton Pier to Black Rock. I would also suggest a proper headquarters, with facilities for all the events held here each year.

I am sure not everyone will agree with all of the towers, but it is likely the new Brighton Marina Tower will be the first of many, as we endeavour to solve the severe lack of housing in our city.

But the emotion engendered by the West Pier is one dominated by a fading nostalgia. What is needed is a vision that is realistic and inspiring. By the time the i360 soars above Brighton seafront, it will be more than 40 years since the West Pier was closed to the public, for safety reasons. The swimming pool at Black Rock was demolished about the same time; the monstrosity that is the Brighton Centre was just opening. Routinely, we demolish the past - often through neglect. Regularly, we fail to determine the future - often as a result of fear. Consequently, little happens. And when it does, it happens slowly. Andy Parsons envisages how the seafront might look in 2024. This is fanciful. How on earth could a city of more than 250,000 people do anything in only a decade? That would be preposterous. Wouldn't it? John Cleese (right) Imagine: Monty Python – And Now for Something Rather Similar BBC1, 10.35pm Eric Idle once joked that the Monty Python team would only get back together if Graham Chapman came back from the dead. There’s been no sign of a Lazarus-like resurrection from the pipesmoking sixth member of the team, and yet back in November the comedy group announced a one-off show at London’s O2. Demand was so high that more dates were quickly added yet Cleese and co have been at pains to point out that this is not only a reunion – it’s also a farewell. The Pythons have decided this will be the last time they’ll work together as a group.

The elephant in the room: ‘price’ or ‘value’? As far as property owners are concerned, whether owneroccupiers or landlords, rising property prices are generally considered ‘good’. But the paradox created by rising property prices, for our nonproperty owning residents, goes to the heart of the matter; the ‘elephant in the room’. It’s a party to which they are not invited. Everyone wants their property price to go up, whether rental or sale. In Brighton and Hove we have become speculators on a rising market and, over the last ten to fifteen years, we earn more per annum from the rise in the price of our homes than we can earn by putting in a hard day’s work. Commentators say that here in Brighton, property prices are on average eight times local salaries…a scary statistic,
unless you own one. Of course that is the conundrum: we want high prices for our property but we want our sons and daughters to be able to buy or rent a home at a reasonable cost. With the average age of the local first time buyer moving up into the mid thirties, there are many youngsters still living at home now who would have packed their bags and left a long time ago if only they could afford to. What does it do to people, outstaying their welcome in the nest, continuing to rely on parents instead of ‘standing on their own two feet’, as people used to say? It’s not their fault but could this be a part of the ‘party while you can’ syndrome? - I don’t have to pay a mortgage and I don’t want to sit at home watching telly with mum and
dad, so I’ll go out with my mates…every night. Not the best recipe for a maturing local society. When you do not need to learn to look after yourself and budget as carefully as you would if you were a home owner, might that lead to a lack of maturity and devil may care approach as the city of Brighton and Hove is often caricatured? Amateur psychology aside, the high incidence of binge drinking and other reckless behaviour may be the perfect antidote to being still stuck at home or in shared rentals when you would in fact like ‘a place you can call home’. Perhaps with an ideal tomorrow too illusory, people may give up hope it will happen and so just live for today. Allied to that is having children later and later: parents want more secure living accommodation than can be
achieved on a 6 month Assured Shorthold Tenancy which may or may not be renewed. Landlords’ agendas can be completely out of kilter with tenants’. Back in the day, if you rented, your landlord was likely to want you there for years and years; a professional landlord. Now, it could be someone thinking of selling and waiting for the ‘right time’. Then, you get 2 months notice to quit: not an easy headspace to be in, if you want to start a family. The alternative is buying and, if you want to start a family in your own home, it’s a long time to wait! As an estate agent, I know I’m only meant to think about the ‘upside’ of rising property prices but, we all as a society need to draw a breath and manage our expectations. You may notice I’ve avoided
the word ‘value’, often used by commentators. But the value of a home is more than the price; we all need to move in that direction a bit more. Property is definitely one of the foundation pillars for a more sound and secure future for our City. If our young people have access to property and so gain willing independence in a stable housing market as buyers or tenants, they can more easily be active shapers of our community not just consumers. For that to happen, we need to start thinking ‘value’ not just ‘price’. Perhaps this is Mark Carney, the Governor of the Bank of England’s message with his remodelling of lending criteria announced in the last 24 hours. We shall see. Paul Bonett F.N.A.E.A. M.A.R.L.A.

This week we caught up with Sophie Barber, organiser of the soon to be launched FarmDrop Hove initiative, a brand new local shopping experience coming to The Brunswick Pub. Tell us about FarmDrop? FarmDrop is a new national initiative, helping communities buy local food together. It helps independent producers get a better deal and gives consumers access to great local produce in a convenient way and at a reasonable price. We all want better transparency about where our food comes from and the less distance it has travelled the fresher it is, not to mention that is better for the environment. Most people have probably never heard of this hardy variety - even though it accounts for more than 5% of the global wine crop. It has an ability to thrive in some of the most inhospitable soils and growing conditions. Spain is its natural home, with more than 90% of the global production; it is particularly popular in areas such as La Mancha and Valdepenas. In the past, it was used for two things: a blending grape for some of the mellower reds, adding the acidity needed to bring the best from varieties such as Cencibel, a Tempranillo clone; and for making some rather harsh and highly-alcoholic wines not for the export market. In recent times, though, this workhorse of the wine world has been used to create some light and unpretentious whites. Clean acidity and freshness complement oily white fish such as sardines and mackerel; they also pair nicely with garlicky seafood and light oriental dishes.

Berlin – a city steeped in history but with something for everyone Richard Morris @Brightonindy There can be few better places in Europe to visit for a long weekend than Berlin. It has something for everyone, be they art fan, football tourist, history enthusiast or food connoisseur. Berlin is a city steeped in history and the past permeates almost every corner of the German capital. Of course, not all of the history is a cause for celebration. The Second World War and the subsequent Soviet occupation of East Berlin are unavoidable. But while not celebrated, they are important and the sensitive way the difficult issues are handled across the city does Berlin great credit. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe offers an emotional take on the country’s history. Built from 2,711 blocks of varying heights, the memorial was designed by Peter Eisenman, who wanted to invoke a sense of panic an uneasiness in visitors. It certainly has the desired effect. Perhaps the pick of the historical attractions is the DDR Museum. The award-winning museum provides a snapshot of life in the east of the city, with an array of interactive displays,
Kani Alavi’s mural, It Happened in November, is one of many on The East Side Gallery including a bugged flat which allows visitors to eavesdrop on fellow museum-goers, Stasi style. For those who want to sample East Berlin without the education bits, the museum is joined to a restaurant which serves traditional Soviet dishes which perfectly complete the immersive experience. A short S-Bahn trip away is The East Side Gallery, the longest preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall. It boasts more than 100 eyecatching murals painted by artists from across the globe, including Dimitri Vrubel, Martin Moos and Kani Alavi. The Berlin Wall may be what foreigners think of when they think of Berlin, but when it comes to official symbols, nothing tops the bear. It would be rude, then, to not at track down at least a couple of them during any stay. When in

Berlin Zoo is a delightful animal park with, as you would expect, an almost unrivalled array of bears, including a particularly grumpy one who lives next door to an unruly pack of wolves and appears to spend much of his days looking at them and tutting. An ideal place to recharge batteries after a day at the zoo is the Cafe am Neuen See in the Tiergarten. Expect traditional German food, a friendly atmosphere and an idyllic lakeside setting. Perfect for a romantic end to a busy day counting bears. There isn’t space on this page to do justice to Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, The Reichstag or even the city’s top football team, Hertha BSC, who play at the architecturally impressive Olympiastadion, and regularly attract visiting fans from these shores. Berlin is just one of those places. However many times you go, you will still find something new. It is best experienced for yourself.

I doubt a single reader will argue when I suggest that part of being fresh and beautiful is maintaining healthy fresh breath. We all try to keep wellhydrated in hot weather. It optimises your cells and allows the body to eliminate toxins and perspire. Most of us brush our teeth twice a day and probably don’t dwell over toothpaste or mouthwash ingredients. Why wouldn’t you trust the local chemist, when you’ve grown up on the zing appeal of high street brands? I’ve ranted about the surfactant (foaming agent) sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS) before on these pages. The bad news is that it isn’t just in bubble bath or shampoo. It also foams around your mouth and gums with everyday toothpaste products. I could get into the fluoridation debate here too, but SLS is the lesser known evil, and anyway you can still enjoy a natural product that has added fluoride in, if you want to. I’m no dentist, but a quick and easy alternative advice for anyone suffering with ulcers or tender gums who don’t have a pre-existing medical condition is to try an SLS-free product for a spell, to see if

Personally, I would never have expected to go for the subtlety of a fennel flavour, or anything less than a turbo strength alcohol mouthwash before a hot date - yet a clean aromatic taste is more mellow and less obvious, particularly as electric toothbrushes give a superb clean. I prefer to focus on getting around the nooks and crannies than ducking a sore spot. Recommended: Brighton-based NHR make a great Tea Tree certified organic aromatherapy toothpaste, £2.65 (75ml). Cleanse and invigorate with chalk, organic vegetable glycerine, vegetable polysaccharides, organic Myrrh essential oil and organic Tea Tree essential oil. Other flavours and a kids line are available too.
Once we got over the shock we put in an order with each of the enterprising young types and this time I got to enjoy the sensation of drinking an imaginary caffeinated beverage too, though still having to adopt the posture of an amphibian, which somewhat took the shine off the experience. Sharks want strong finish to their T20 campaign
Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sussex are hoping a packed Shark Tank can roar them back into Natwest T20 Blast contention tonight (Friday). A welcome and much-needed T20 win over Kent last time out breathed new life into the county’s chances of progressing from the congested South Group. Now the club is hoping a bumper Friday night crowd at the BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground can spur the Sharks on to a victory which could propel them up the table and give them a chance of reaching the quarter final stage of the competition. The top four from each regional group qualify and Sussex currently sit two points behind Surrey in third and Glamorgan in fourth. Luke Wright was in good form against Kent, scoring 85 of the Sharks’ 149 runs, with his
personal total coming from 61 balls and including seven four and two sixes. A similar turn from the all-rounder tonight would surely provide a solid platform for Sussex to claim what would be just their fourth win in this year’s tournament. Against Kent, Steffan Piolet was again the pick of the bowlers, ending the match with 3-14. Will Beer recorded figures of 2-25 and Lewis Hatchett 2-20 as all six of the Sharks’ bowlers picked up wickets. It was an unusual game for Kent’s bowler James Tredwell, who ended with a team best 2-20 for the Spitfires despite recently arriving on loan at Sussex, where he is available to play in the County Championship while still turning out for his parent club in the short form. While T20 success would be welcome, Sussex’s attention will surely be weighted in favour of County Championship survival.
A 309-run defeat to Durham earlier this week left Sussex just two points above the Division One drop-zone and rooted firmly in a relegation battle. The county’s cause has not been helped by injuries to key players, such as Michael Yardy, and the absence of Chris Jordan and Matt Prior on England duty. Coach Mark Robinson, however, insisted now was not a time for his players to sit licking their wounds. Sussex will soon be welcoming Northamptonshire for what could prove a key County Championship match, starting on Sunday. A healthy crowd would clearly be appreciated by players looking to return to form on home soil.
Tickets for tonight’s (Friday) T20 game, which starts at 7pm, are still available, priced from £20, and entry to the Northamptonshire clash is £15 for adults, £5 for juniors and free for under-fives.
Straight from Brighton Racecourse Brighton Racecourse hope they have encouraged children from nearby Whitehawk to one day take up a career in racing. The track invited pupils of the City Academy of Whitehawk to its latest meeting, Brighton Racecourse executive director, Davina Wells, said to Brighton & Hove Independent: “You never know - we might have a few jockeys and trainers of the future from amongst the 47 children who came along. “One jockey who rode a winner on the day, Oisin Murphy, could be an inspiration for them to take up the sport. He’s only a teenager himself, Brighton is proving a lucky track and he’s already ridden in the Derby!” Brighton Racecourse wanted to “do something” for the community. Davina said: “It is the first time in quite a while we’ve had a school up here. “We want to try and engage with the local community, in this case through the City
Academy of Whitehawk school and provide opportunities for the students from there to have a day out free of charge. “They all had a great time. All the children also wore jockeys silks, learnt about care of horses, jockeys’ diet and lifestyle and had a tour of the weighing room. They also learned about what it is like to run a raceday and other aspects of what goes on behind the scenes. “They saw some good racing, some really close finishes, some by a neck, some needing a photo.” The visit was part of a Racing to School initiative run by the British Horseracing Education and Standards Trust, a registered charity. BHEST stated: “The programme supports children from all backgrounds, including many who are disadvantaged, to develop their skills and increase their confidence through a range of activities using the context of the horseracing industry.”

Ward will have to take pay cut to join Brighton Seagulls success story Stephen Ward will have to accept a pay cut if he is to join the Albion on a permanent deal. The left-back, who enjoyed an impressive season-long loan at The Amex under former head coach Oscar Garcia, is among a host of players the Albion hope to recruit ahead of the new campaign. But local press in the West Midlands have revealed the Ireland international is on £13,000 a week at parent club Wolverhampton Wanderers a sum the Albion will almost certainly not match. The Express and Star newspaper suggested Brighton stumped up around £10,000 of
the player’s weekly wages during his spell on the south coast as Wolves cut their costs during a season in League One. They have since secured a swift return to the second tier, but manager Kenny Jackett has decided to stick with the squad who performed so admirably last season and look to shed topearners like Ward. A modest six-figure fee will almost certainly not prove to be a stumbling block to any potential deal. The Albion still have funds left from the January sales of Liam Bridcutt, Ashley Barnes and Adam El Abd. Nevertheless, the Albion are understandably reluctant to break their wage structure,
particularly with the threat of Financial Fair Play looming large on the Championship horizon. Brighton boast the largest average crowds in the division but suffer from a lack of parachute payments given to their recently-relegated rivals. Having announced loses close to £15million in their last set of accounts, the Seagulls will not gamble by paying over the odds. Ward made 46 appearances in the Championship for the Albion last season, scoring four goals and registering four assists. His form saw him recalled to the Ireland international set-up and the 28-year-old came second in the club’s player of the year awards.
Hyypiä wants nothing less than 100% Richard Morris @BrightonIndy Sami Hyypiä will demand 100% effort in training as he prepares to mastermind a tilt at promotion. Albion players were yesterday (Thursday) due to start reporting back to the club following the summer break and the Seagulls new manager made it crystal clear he expects nothing but full commitment from his charges. Speaking on the club’s official website earlier this week, Hyypiä said: “I can’t wait to start working here and prepare the team for the new season. “I like to push people to the limit and that’s what we need during the season as well. We need to push ourselves to the limit and do the best we can in every game. “I demand 100% quality and concentration in every session we do.” The former Finland international did, however, reveal his early work with the Albion squad would not all be centered completely on the grueling fitness work traditionally associated with pre-season preparations in England. “Fitness is very important in football,” he said, “and you need
to be able to run for 90 minutes and maybe even a bit more sometimes, but I would like to do most of the exercises with the ball. “We can have fun in the sessions as well and I like the players to enjoy themselves, but the concentration still has to be there. “Hopefully in training we can create an atmosphere that the players know they need to work hard for success, but you can have pleasure and fun as well.” Hyypiä is well-aware of the need to reinforce his currently threadbare Seagulls squad and is keen to see his current players up-close before deciding who to bring in. He said: “My focus is now on getting to know all our players; their strengths and weaknesses, and how they are as people, so I can handle them better. “We also need to have a squad that is prepared for injuries. I know the Championship is a tough league and many clubs would like to get promotion, but I’m quite confident that if we get a squad together, then we can be one of the main candidates for promotion to the Premier League.” This will be the first summer that Albion players use the club’s brand-spanking-new training
complex in Lancing. The £30million facility has been eagerly-anticipated by fans and players alike and is indicative of the progress the Seagulls are making off the field. And just yesterday (Thursday) the club announced it had extended its long-running sponsorship deal with American Express to include the naming rights of the new training ground, which will now be called the American Express Elite Football Performance Centre. The financial services giant already sponsors the team’s kit and has naming rights on the Albion’s impressive 30,750-seater stadium in Falmer. Paul Barber, the club’s chief executive, said: “The club enjoys a hugely successful relationship with American Express and we are delighted that its support has now been extended to include one of the finest football training ground and academy facilities anywhere in the world.” Nigel Greenwood, vice president of American Express, added: “As the city’s largest private-sector employer, this collaboration further demonstrates our commitment to the success of the communities where we live and work, not only in the short term but for generations to come.”

Fans flocking to see Seagulls play Rooks Seagulls supporters have been snapping up tickets to see Sami Hyypiä’s first game as Albion manager. Brighton and Hove Albion head to near-neighbours Lewes FC on Saturday, July 5 for the first of their pre-season games. More than 2,400 fans flocked to the home of The Rooks for a friendly in July 2012 but this year’s game could top that - with Albion fans keen to see Hyypiä’s debut in the Brighton dug-out. Tickets, which are only available in advance, have been selling well with little more than 600 left yesterday afternoon (Thursday). And with just eight days left for fans to secure their place at The Dripping Pan, the Ryman League outfit will be hopeful of cash-boosting sell-out. Lewes have become the poster-boys of nonleague football, largely as a result of their fan ownership scheme and inventive marketing techniques. The club regularly produce match day
posters which boast a football slant on iconic images, album covers or film posters.
