They are the statistics that every World Cup football fan should know. When England beat Slovenia in 2010, reports of domestic violence increased by more than a quarter (27%). And when England lost 4-1 to Germany, they increased even more sharply - up by 29%. Whether England win or lose, violence against women and girls increases, according to official figures obtained from police forces across the country under the Freedom of Information Act. In Brighton and Hove, #FearFreeFootball aims at highlighting the ugly side of the beautiful game. Nobody should be in fear for their safety during this World Cup. I am a member of the board of
Rise - our local domestic abuse charity - which is on the front line, supporting women who are on the receiving end of abuse. Rise works in Brighton, Hove, and throughout West Sussex, offering services that include refuge accommodation, crisis appointments, a helpline, training and preventative education. They are critical to providing safety for abused women and their children. Domestic violence is a year-round issue, but if England lose - or win their matches, it could get worse. UNESCO approves biosphere
Argus journalists vote to strike Journalists at The Argus - the ailing Sussex newspaper with fewer than 5,000 readers in the city - have voted to strike. They balloted after a proposal to move editorial production jobs to Weymouth in Dorset, redundancies, and the effect this will have on workloads and editorial quality. Almost two thirds (64%) of members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) voted in favour of going on strike at the newspaper's offices on an industrial estate opposite Asda in Hollingbury. NUJ members look likely to strike at the same time as colleagues in London and the northwest of
England. No date has yet been fixed for a strike at The Argus, as the union continues to plan coordinated action. One Argus journalist said: “Don’t quote me. I can’t say anything. They are looking for any reason to sack me.” Laura Davison, the union’s national organiser, said: “NUJ members in south London and Brighton are committed to producing quality local journalism. They can’t stand by while (Argus owner) Newsquest cuts costs, closes offices and titles, holds down pay, piles up the work and makes experienced journalists redundant with little compensation.”
Jubilee Library visits top one million
The United Nations has named the Brighton and Lewes Downs as Britain’s first new biosphere reserve for 40 years. The designation was announced by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) this week. The area has become one of more than 600 “world-class environments” in more than 100 countries. Only a few world biosphere sites include a city. Chris Todd, who chairs the Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere Partnership, said:
“This is world recognition for the fantastic environment we have here and for all the hard work that local people put into looking after it. “Now we have this accolade, we aim to build on the partnership to do even greater things. “This is not about telling people what to do but creating a vision for the future. “More and more people are living in cities and we need to find ways of making them more pleasant places to live. “We need to make sure that we build nature into the equation while raising awareness of how the natural environment contributes to our wealth and wellbeing.” The Brighton and Lewes Downs Biosphere Partnership is made up

The Level celebrates
Part-time workers travelling between Brighton and London could save £1,722 a year if the Government agrees to bring in flexible season tickets. The Campaign for Better Transport believes commuters who work more flexible hours risk being priced out of their jobs unless the Coalition honours an earlier pledge to push for parttime tickets. The group estimates millions of workers are over-paying for travel because they do not need to travel on a daily basis but use trains enough to warrant a season ticket. That includes many living locally who face the regular slog to the capital and back.
A day of free activities takes place tomorrow (Saturday) to celebrate the first birthday of the revamped Level. Running from 10am until 6pm, the family fun day will include community stalls, live music, children’s games, arts and crafts, a guided history walk around the park, quiz and a question and answer session with gardening expert Jean Griffin. The Level was given a complete makeover last summer and has proved popular with locals young and old. Councillor Pete West, chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee, said: "The restoration of The Level has been a big success and

The partnership has spent six years developing its bid for world biosphere status. Martin Price, the chairman of the UK national committee for UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme, said: “I am very glad to say that the decision was taken to approve the Brighton and Lewes Downs as a new biosphere for the UK. “It is now a globally recognised site of excellence.”
More than one million people visited the Jubilee Library last year - making it the second most popular in the country. The library, which is run by the council, attracted 17,000 new members last year and the local authority has set its sights on improving the service further over the next 18 months. The council runs 12 community libraries, including the recentlyopened Woodingdean Library stocking more than 500,000 items,
including 40,000 audio books and CDs and 45,000 rare books. In the last year alone, the library service purchased 50,000 new items and lent an average of 66 books, DVDs or CDs an hour. Free internet access and online advice sessions have also proved popular. Councillor Geoffrey Bowden, council culture spokesman, said: “It’s wonderful to see how our libraries have evolved from places to borrow books to providing a doorway to the World Wide Web.”

Political debate to mark paperback release An author is celebrating the launch of one of his books in paperback with a political debate. The hardback edition of Dan Jellinek’s People power: A user’s guide to democracy in the UK, has a five star rating on online retail giants Amazon. Work can begin in earnest once the contracts are signed today
Final paperwork for the i360 is due to be signed today (Friday). Up to 100 contracts require signatures, before work begins in earnest on the controversial landmark development on Brighton seafront. The contracts come after formal approval of a loan to Brighton and Hove City Council from the Public Work Loans Board.
Preparatory work on the 600ft viewing platform is expected to start shortly. The columns of the old West Pier on the beach have been removed, with the rest of the structure remaining in the sea. The project was given a cash boost in March when the city council agreed to lend it £21.4m, in addition to the £14.8m already agreed. The cycle hub is already taking shape

Strikers protesting against education cuts and job losses attended a rally in Jubilee Square
Management and unions at City College Brighton and Hove are to meet on Monday (June 16) to discuss the impact of financial cuts of up to £1.5million. The crucial meeting - which follows lengthy and detailed negotiations comes in the wake of a one-day strike by college staff on Tuesday. Protesters - supported by Caroline Lucas, the Green MP for Brighton Pavilion and Purna Sen, her Labour Party rival - held a rally in Jubilee Square. The strike was called by the University and College Union; members picketed college buildings, including Pelham Tower in Pelham
Street, Brighton. College executives have already indicated that some courses will be saved, but unions fear the teaching of many others will be outsourced to freelance teachers rather than fulltime staff. In a statement, Lynn Thackway, principal of City College, said: “It’s regrettable that this strike is inconveniencing students at a crucial time in the academic year.” The union said: “Even with the recently agreed ‘concessions’, the management are still planning devastating cuts to provision for the people of Brighton and Hove."

It is unusual for a heritage board to commemorate both a fictional liaison and an ancient traffic accident. But those are among the details to be found on one unveiled last week in Brighton’s Regency Square. The site of the square, before it was built in the 1820s, had been known as Belle Vue Field and it was here, in response to the threat from revolutionary France, that a large military encampment was established in 1793. The fictional liaison occurs in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (1813), in which the heroine’s youngest sister, Lydia Bennett, visits Brighton and elopes with, later marrying, a bounderish officer called George Wickham. I quote from Chapter 41: “In Lydia’s imagination, a visit to Brighton comprised every possibility of earthly happiness. She saw with the creative eye of fancy, the streets of that gay bathing place covered with officers. She saw herself the object of attention, to tens and to scores of them at present unknown. She saw all the glories of the camp; its tents stretched forth in beauteous uniformity of lines, crowded
with the young and the gay, and dazzling with scarlet; and to complete the view, she saw herself seated beneath a tent, tenderly flirting with at least six officers at once.” After her marriage, Lydia advises her mother that all her sisters should “go to Brighton. That is the place to get husbands”. Whether Austen actually had this particular camp in mind, or at what precise date she imagined the events to have occurred, remain moot. But let us not spoil the heritage claim with literary pedantry. As for the traffic accident, that involved a gentleman with a green carnation in his buttonhole. I quote from the Brighton Herald of February 3 1894: “An unpleasant adventure occurred on the Brighton front on Monday afternoon to Mr Oscar Wilde, who was staying at the Royal Albion Hotel. He was riding in a victoria opposite Adelaide Crescent, Hove, when the horse took fright and bolted towards Brighton. The driver was powerless to stop the runaway, and it was not until it reached the bottom of Regency Square, and the vehicle had come into collision with the esplanade railings, that the horse was brought to a standstill. Fortunately, both Mr Wilde and the driver escaped without injury, the only damage done being that
one of the shafts of the victoria was broken, and the horse was cut under the fore-leg. So far as Mr Wilde was concerned it was ‘an accident of no importance’.” Oscar could dismiss this incident with a punning puff for his current hit A Woman of No Importance. Less easily shrugged off was what happened in October, on his next visit to Brighton. Dragged away from Worthing by his feckless lover Lord Alfred Douglas, he found himself having to tend “Bosie” for several days at the Grand Hotel, when the latter went down with influenza. In some pathetic pages of his extraordinary letter from prison, De Profundis, Wilde describes procuring “special grapes from London for you as you did not care for those the hotel supplied”, and not leaving him “except for an hour’s walk in the morning, an hour’s drive in the afternoon”. Then, after they transferred to lodgings at 20 King’s Road, Wilde himself succumbed to the virus, and Bosie failed to reciprocate. He deserted Wilde, gadded about at Wilde’s expense, threatened him as he lay ill in bed, even wrote him a virulent letter on his 40th birthday. Volk’s Railway given cash boost Ambitious plans also include creating a conservation workshop to help protect the carriages and provide visitors with a close-up glimpse of any restoration work. Three of the original carriages have also been earmarked for restoration as part of the council’s scheme in an effort to increase the line’s capacity. The council has been given an initial sum of £96,000 to allow it to develop the plans further and if all goes according to plan the total pot provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund will top £1.5million. That total amount will be forthcoming as long as the plans progress in line with the original proposal and the work is expected to be completed by 2017. A dedicated team of volunteers helps council staff run and maintain the railway, which has three stops - the Aquarium Station (next to The Volk's Railway is a popular seafront attraction Brighton Pier), Paston of Magnus Volk and has been Place and Black Rock Station a popular fixture of the city’s near Brighton Marina. Reckless by William Nicholson I have had a reading jag of William Nicholson recently. Blame it on insomnia and the fatal ease of the daily deal on Kindle. There is something so seductive about buying a book in seconds at 3am while snuggled up in bed. There is no doubt the debtors' prison may loom large in my life soon if I do not stop. Reckless is a follow up to Motherland - and, like a fool, I read them out of order. But it does not matter at all. I resolved to buy them after hearing him speak at the fantastic First Fictions festival at West Dean College in Chichester. He was in conversation with
Lizzie Enfield (another fantastic Brighton author, of which we are blessed by a disproportionate amount). He had been on my wish list for a long time and I am so glad I got around to reading him. Christine Keeler, The Bay of Pigs, Kennedy, and Mountbatten are all slipped in with such ease that you really believe that you are there, listening in on the secrets and whispers. William Nicholson is concerned with the details of daily lives, and he gets it so right. The spies and rumours spreading around at that time are made only too real. He was nominated for the infamous Bad Sex Awards for Motherland. But, honestly, I have read a lot worse! Go ahead - and judge for yourselves.

The son of a German clock-maker, he was born and died in Brighton, living at 38 Dyke Road. He was buried at St Wulfrun’s churchyard in Ovingdean following his death on May 20 1937. As well as the Volks Railway, he was behind the short-lived but fondlyremembered Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway - with its unique Daddy Long Legs carriage sticking out above the waves. In 1887 he built a three-wheeled electric carriage and a year later made a fourwheeled electric car for the Sultan of Turkey.

Brussels certainly seems hell-bent on alienating whichever elements of the British electorate have not already got the message. UKIP must be jumping for joy at the latest suggestion from our European chums. Not content with already writing more than 75% of our country's rules for us, the Brussels Club also wants to tell us how to manage our property market. In some ways, they are right in what they say, because there is no doubt our property market is very different from those of anywhere on mainland Europe. But we are different. And I, for one, am proud of it. So long may that last. I do not want to pretend I am anything other than British and, while I am very fond of visiting our European neighbours, I certainly do not want to start emulating them. We have our own national traits and customs, our own way of doing business, and our own code of conduct. We certainly do

That is, experiment first by actually moving and working on mainland
Europe for a couple of years then come back to Britain and see if you still have the same opinions. You do not even have to go all the way to somewhere like Denmark, which has the highest taxation in Europe. Simply go across the Channel to France or Belgium or pop down to where it is a bit warmer - Spain, Portugal, or Italy and see how you fare. Whatever you decide. I guarantee you will not see any of it as you do when on holiday. And your views about the European Union - even if you remain a supporter - will have changed dramatically.

A labourer from Portslade won Britain’s Got Talent and will now perform at the Royal Variety Performance. Richard Hadfield, 20, also scooped a share of the £250,000 prize money after his band, Collabro, beat opera singer Lucy Kay into second place. Their performance won a standing ovation during Saturday night’s final despite the fact the group had only met one month before entering the talent show.
A seafront cinema was set to open yesterday (Thursday) for another summer of big-screen fun. Three council hopefuls from Labour are demanding answers to the future of the Aquarium terraces on Madeira Drive. A disabled man plans on standing for election in Brighton after getting help from a fund designed to support budding politicians with disabilities. Joe Neilson, who has Fibromyalgia and Macular degeneration, plans on standing as an independent MP for Brighton Kemptown constituency in next year’s election. He received a grant under the Access to Elected Office for Disabled People Fund to help finance his election campaign.
A course on how to get the most out of the internet is taking place at Woodingdean Library tomorrow (Saturday). The library will be open between 10.30am and 12.30pm for anyone looking to find out how to use social media websites like Twitter and Facebook, how to shop online, get tips on planning a budget online or using the internet to look for jobs.
Cancer sufferers will soon benefit from an online support service being trialled in the city. Macmillan Cancer Support has launched Team Up which looks to pair up patients and local people happy to offer their support by carrying out day-to-day jobs like shopping and gardening. Firefighters' strike Firefighters took part in a 24-hour strike yesterday (Thursday). The stoppage – which was due to start at 9am – was part of a national dispute between the government and the Fire

A floating bus stop will be added just south of Sainsbury’s which will accommodate bendy buses and the junction will be resurfaced. Traffic lights will be changed to give priority to cyclists to help keep them clear of vehicles. There will also be improved pedestrian footways and crossing points. The main disruption for road users will be the temporary closure of access to and from Upper Lewes Road from the gyratory from midAugust.

The house that rubbish built A house made almost entirely of rubbish was unveiled this week. The property, which has been backed by TV designer Kevin McCloud, the University of Brighton and architect Duncan Baker-Brown, is partly made from 19,800 toothbrushes, two-tonnes of jeans, 4,000 video cassettes and 2,000 carpet tiles. The project began in 2012 when Mr Baker-Brown decided to build the country’s first waste house in the grounds of the university with the aim of showing how low-carbon homes can be built cheaply and quickly using waste and surplus materials from building sites. The scheme also made use of thrownaway concrete blocks, timber, vinyl banners, pieces of polystyrene, bicycle inner tubes and even old coffee grinders.

Woodvale Cemetery: Blessed with new technology and a beauty that will fascinate anybody who visits Maire McQueeney @MaireMcQueeney The Lewes Road Cemeteries with their impressive mixture of downland and woodland are an expansive green oasis near the mid-point of our city. Woodvale, a Grade II Garden of Special Historic Interest, is also a fine example of an early High Victorian public cemetery. Just last week we learned the environment in Woodvale will be improving, thanks to modern technology – a fact that may, perhaps, go largely unnoticed by visitors attending funeral services. In Woodvale’s North Chapel, the Right Reverend Richard Jackson – the recently-ordained Suffragan Bishop of Lewes - officiated at a community ceremony of blessing for new cremators installed in Brighton and Hove City Council’s crematorium. The ceremony marked the culmination of a £1.5 million, ninemonth modernisation project. More efficient cremators with state-of-the-art filtration,
to reduce emissions of mercury and other pollutants - have been installed; they can also retain and recycle waste heat, use less power, leading to a reduced carbon footprint, and an anticipated £42,000 a year reduction in running costs. Improvement in air quality will be welcomed by local community groups and other visitors. But they are more likely to notice the variety of birdsong that can be heard in the picnic garden, a few metres from the Vogue gyratory system. The beautiful paths of the central valley contain most of the 11 listed buildings and monuments that have brought art into nature, as well as more local visitors when tours are on offer. Brighton Urban Wildlife’s Group’s free leaflet Wildlife of The Extra-Mural and Woodvale Cemeteries was published 20 years ago. It is, however, still an excellent reference for visitors; the Round Hill Society now highlights interesting graves in its newsletter; and Triangle Community Group organises walking tours for their members and guests.
Woodvale, a Grade II site, is a fine example of an early High Victorian public cemetery The cemeteries also have a fictional life, for Peter James’s army of fans of his police procedural novels. These are the cemeteries, mortuary, and coroner’s office that are regularly visited by Detective Roy Grace. BBC Radio Four’s Open Country sent Matt Baker to visit the grave of Thomas Hughes QC, novelist, utopian socialist, and author of Tom Brown’s Schooldays. Unlike Thomas Hughes - or Tom MS Highflyer (see box right) - most of the graves in the Lewes Road
cemeteries relate to local families and local stories. And many more will come to be told throughout the remembrance of World War I here in Brighton and Hove. Maire McQueeney is the author of Brighton and Hove City Council’s Walker’s Guide to The Lewes Road Cemeteries; she is a volunteer Health Walks leader. Her World War I tours of The Lewes Road Cemeteries will begin in October 2014.
Without even a signpost, there is the grave of Tom MS Highflyer. His names honour the captain and the British navy warship that rescued him, aged nine, from a slave dhow in 1866. Thomas Pasley, captain of HMS Highflyer, served in the East African Anti-slave Trade Squadron, chasing dhows off Zanzibar, the principal post of embarkation for slaves. Details of Tom’s life are unknown. But when he died, in 1870, he received a non-conformist Christian burial marked by a stone cross. Business Three new restaurants at Churchill Square Churchill Square will soon house a trio of new restaurants and food shops - with three new businesses moving in over the next month. As well as the new look frontage which is currently taking shape, the shopping centre will boast an American diner, a pretzel bakery and an Italian café. First to open is Auntie Anne’s on June 21. The pretzel bakery chain started at a Pennsylvania Farmer’s Market in 1988 and has gone on to become a multinational brand boasting 1,400 stores around the world. It will sell both sweet and savoury pretzels - with flavours ranging from chocolate, to cheese and jalapeno. The Italian Kitchen, formerly Café Giardino, will be open seven days a week from June 24 and offer classic Italian sandwiches, paninis, pizzas and salads alongside traditional seaside dishes. Then, on July 1, Ed’s Easy
Diner begins serving up classic American food and drink. The diner will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a range of milkshakes. The restaurant will have an authentic American look to it, with booths, tables, bar stools and a restored jukebox with hits from the 1950s. Tina Dallorzo, centre director at Churchill Square, said: "We're delighted to have such a fresh and exciting range of new eateries opening their doors in the centre this summer. "They're all brands that very much mirror our on-going vision of delivering great food and more choice for our customers at Churchill Square." Churchill Square is continuing to run its Thursday night Late Bites sessions throughout the remainder of June. Karl Marx had a point - work needs to make us happy Sam Zubaidi @ work_happiness The Government’s mental capital and well-being report states that 420,000 employees in Britain each year believe they are experiencing depression, anxiety or stress at work, at levels that were making them ill. As a product of UK higher education, and working within the careers department of the University of Brighton, a phrase I have heard and do hear frequently from graduates is: “I don’t know what work I want to do when I

graduate.” Coupled with this, they are laden with enormous debt the latest paper from Parliament (updated in May 2014) estimates this to be in excess of £44,000 for the average student. In my opinion, the two points above are connected. Students are thrust in to the ‘real world’ of employment upon graduation, and with little regard paid towards consciously deciding what work to choose that will pay the bills and provide a sense of purpose, they embark on a career which inevitably leads many to question: “what am I doing with my life?” However, this problem is not confined to just students - unfortunately, from my experience, it seems the majority of people feel a lack of purpose and gratification in their work. I’m personally driven by my desire to help individuals, and our society, become happier. Numerous mainstream reports prove that our physical and mental health benefits greatly from spending more time in this state. Therefore, with the above problem in mind, and in conjunction with a fully qualified psychotherapist and successful business coach, I have developed a training course which teaches the
participant how to choose work that makes them happy. Covering subjects such as emotional intelligence, the importance of early childhood experiences, how to decide what our dream work is and finally how to plan to get it, the participant is equipped with the tools to pursue gratifying work after five weeks. Jack, 20, a student of Sussex University, was able to identify his dream placement and then able to achieve it using tools he learned on the course. “Before the course, like most others, I had no idea what work would make me happy. It’s thanks to the course that I have my internship this summer.” Sam Zubaidi,31,is Enterprise Officer for the University of Brighton and is training to be a psychotherapist. He places great value on the importance of maintaining happy and healthy relationships with his family and friends. Sam is currently running a crowd-funding campaign, which ends on July 2, to raise start-up funds for his training course which teaches people how to choose work that makes them happy. Brighton charity swimmers raise over £7,500 for Sport Relief

Charity swimmers at Prince Regent Swimming Complex and King Alfred Leisure Centre – operated by Freedom Leisure in partnership with Brighton and Hove City Council - who took part in the World’s Biggest Swim on Saturday, March 22 and 29, have succeeded in raising £7,529.51 for Sport Relief. Each year across the UK
around 23,000 people take part in the world’s biggest charity swim event, which over the past 27 years has raised over £40million for good causes. Over 110 local swimmers joined in this year’s event at Prince Regent Swimming Complex and King Alfred Leisure Centre and chose to take part in 1.5k, 2.5k or 5k distances, individually or as part of a team.
Twelve other Freedom Leisure centres took part with a total of 583 swimmers across the group raising a staggering £35,622.56 among them. “This was an incredible feat from the team of swimmers who took to the water,” says Freedom Leisure area manager Chris Lovelock. “There was a great atmosphere with plenty of supporters cheering the swimmers from the poolside. "I would like to congratulate all the swimmers who trained so hard to complete their challenge. They should be very proud of their achievements and I’m delighted that the Brighton swimming community raised so much money for such an important charity.” Richard Bagwell, Freedom Leisure Group Sports development manager agrees: “Now that the money is in, I can honestly say that every person and every length counted: to raise £35,622 in one weekend for charity is a terrific achievement for the Freedom Leisure group,” he said.
Firefighters put their skills to the test at Southern Water’s new Peacehaven Wastewater Treatment Works. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service simulated a chemical spill at the state-of-the-art facility in Hoyle Road to carry out essential training. The scenario involved an acid leak from a delivery lorry, the fumes from which had rendered the driver unconscious. The firefighters had to treat the driver, stop the chemical spill and clear the area – guided by Southern Water employees from the safety of a control room. The Environment Agency was also on-hand to provide advice and safety recommendations as the acid also posed a hazard to the environment and infrastructure. Gary Pearson, head of operational performance for East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Training is an essential part of our job and doing exercises such as these on an active site means we are able to plan for similar real-life instances and identify opportunities to improve our response.
“We are constantly out on training exercises which is not only good for our individual and group learning but also means we are able to build solid relationships within the community. We are thankful to Southern Water, and everyone involved, for their co-operation in this important training exercise.” Kevin Short, Southern Water’s manager for the site, said: “We were delighted to be able to help East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service with their training exercise and we are working with them to continually improve our own emergency strategy.” The treatment works ensure that the 95 million litres of waste water produced each day by people in Peacehaven, Telscombe Cliffs, Saltdean, Rottingdean, Ovingdean and Brighton and Hove is treated to EU standards.

Digital Festival manager announced Coffee from a phone box Organisers of Brighton Digital Festival have announced the manager of this year’s event. Jesse Black Mooney, who was one of the festival’s co-ordinators last year, returns in the top job for the month-long event, which runs from September 1 until September 28. Last year’s festival featured more than 170 events (67% more than 2012) and was attended by more than 40,000 people. Over the last two years, the festival has benefited from support and funding from a host of bodies and firms, including Arts Council England, Brighton and Hove City Council, American Express and RAP interiors - with co-ordination from Wired Sussex in association with Lighthouse. The appointment of Jesse Black Mooney, and John Bannister as a PR consultant, were announced this week alongside posts for a part-time education co-ordinator and a part-time freelance arts adviser. A delighted Jesse said: “With the amazing success and growth of Brighton Digital Festival, I am excited to have been asked to join

A red phone box has been transformed into a coffee kiosk near Pavilion Gardens. Brighton is the first place in the county to get one of the Red Box Coffee outlets, but more than 300 are planned nationwide. They are the brainchild of local businessmen Eddie Ottwell and Steve Beeken, who came up with the idea two years ago and approached BT with a view to turning unused phone boxes into retail units. Mr Ottewell said: “These iconic red phone boxes are both a great piece of engineering and architecture. “Our aim is to redefine the usage to suit modern day needs and requirements without compromising their external appearance” Ten per cent of every sale from the kiosk will be given to Hove-based charity Friends First.

Book plans in place for pick of Stroma images After a year going out every day to document our city, I was left with 10,000 images and the daunting task to shape them into a lucid form to mirror the full make-up of our city. It soon became obvious one book would not be enough, so I created four. The first is about the street art of the city, as it just shows that you can always find a new interest here if you bother to look. Then there were the people. Kids are born and the old pass on, but in the middle life here is one to be lived A Life Extraordinary takes you on that journey from the first breath to the last. B in Brighton is about the attractions and history of the city with finer details and big parades in equal focus. The final book, C our Front, is grand tour along our seafront. Not all the images are of the fun stuff - our city, like every other has its own issues. In total the books hold 1,780 unique images. When will estate agents be regulated? This old chestnut comes back regularly to haunt us when an agent closes up, walking away with clients’ money as happened in Plymouth last year, or assaults a client with a baseball bat… yes, this happened in St Helen’s recently! More commonly, it is small but significant breaches of
trust and lack of professionalism which drive the public perception of the integrity and talent of those they deal with. The Property Ombudsman is often the first port of call for the disgruntled seller or buyer, landlord or tenant. His role is to register the complaint and see
if it qualifies under TPOS terms. The first of these is that the agent needs to be registered. If they are not, you do not have recourse. That can present a real challenge to the consumer. Of course, if the agent you are dealing with is a member of the National Association of Estate Agents or the Association of Residential Letting Agents, they will be bound to a set of standards to which they have to adhere including approved Client Money Protection, Professional Indemnity, Anti-Money Laundering through independent bodies. This applies to Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors firms too. Unfortunately, many customers do not take any notice of an agent’s bona fides until there
is a problem and…of course, the firms where there is more likely to be a problem, may not have these in place which makes the process for redress more unclear. Most estate agents would welcome a threshold for entry into the profession as, currently, anyone can start an estate agency firm tomorrow. Sounds remarkable that you could be entrusting probably your most valuable asset to someone who a few weeks before could have been working in a totally different industry…hard to believe but true! The recently enacted CPRs (Consumer Protection Regulations) can help and are worth looking at if you feel you have been misled. Examples would be: The average consumer who is thinking of signing a contract with a property sales business should be clear on such
things as: what services they will provide, their fees and charges, their terms of business, and any tiein period; or, agents should avoid pressurising their consumers to act quickly to put in an offer, raise their price, skip the survey and finalise the sale and/or exchange contracts. The government has been loath to step into the area of estate agency barriers to entry so the industry has mostly been self-regulated. Our advice would be to thoroughly grill any agent you are about to engage to ensure they are members of appropriate schemes and, as a baseline in Brighton and Hove at least, they know their ‘Victorians’ from their ‘Regencies’…and are they members of the local Brighton and Hove Estate Agents Association which has a code of practice to which agents must adhere. There is not an exhaustive list of the numerous things which must be done so based on our years of experience handling such matters we have put together in this article a list of what we believe are the most urgent matters to attend to:■ Register the Death - This should be done within 5 days of death and is normally done by a relative of the deceased. It is advisable to call the local Registrar’s Office to make an appointment as soon as possible (Brighton is 01237 292016). In most cases it is advisable to also ask for approximately 10-15 copies of the death certificate as these will be needed when writing to third parties and thus having them avoids delay ordering in the future. ■ Locate and secure the deceased’s home and any assets and personal items they may have and prepare an itemized list of these for future reference. ■ Locate a Will if the deceased was known to have had one and/or contact the solicitor that prepared it in case they still hold the original. Locating the Will allows the Executors to be identified and notified of the death so that they may then take steps to administer the Estate in a timely and professional way. If the deceased also left instructions as to the type of burial they wanted, the Will should confirm what these are so that those wishes can be carried out in full. ■ If there is no obvious sign of a Will in the deceased’s home, then potentially the deceased has died intestate. Before reaching the decision that this is the case, it is advisable to ask a solicitor local to where the deceased lived to make enquiries on your behalf. Such enquiries may include a search of the voluntary register of Wills operated by ‘Certainty’ or by requesting that the local Law Society circulate details to all of its members. The Sussex Law Society through its appointed administrator is especially proactive in this area so if a Will has been prepared previously the chances of a firm recognising both the deceased’s name and that a Will is held by them still is considerably improved. ■ After the funeral steps should be taken to start administering and then distributing the deceased’s Estate. In all but the most straight forward or very low value Estates, it is normal for the family to instruct an experienced Solicitor to advise and assist them with all aspects of this process. There are other non
solicitor organisations that will also offer to undertake probate and administration work and so it is important that the family and Executors of the deceased decide at an early stage who and what type of company they wish to act for them. Certainly there should be reassurance given when instructing a solicitor who is not only very experienced in handling this type of work, but who also can show, especially via their Membership of accredited Law Society Schemes, that they have been through a rigorous quality and skill based assessment by their peers. ■ Collect in and organise all paperwork of a financial and personal nature into good order and then store this safely. In an ideal world the deceased will have left detailed and fully comprehensive lists of all of their assets and documentation – if they have the administration will be much quicker and costs will be capable of being more readily fixed. In the event that the deceased has left no such lists, then your solicitor will need to review all papers and make extensive enquiries to ensure that all assets (as well as liabilities) are located and then properly paid or discharged so as to allow the Estate to be concluded. In a short guide of this nature it is impossible to give a detailed explanation of the legal work that has to be done to fully administer an Estate – it is technical in nature and for many clients it is easier to appoint a professional person to deal with it at a time of personal loss and upset. Our comments above are therefore aimed at providing some assistance and practical guidance in the immediate period after loss. Coffee Chronicles We generally work on the assumption that the majority of people who order a Cappuccino have no idea what they’ll actually receive. We’d say about 90% of the Cappuccinos we make are for people who order it because it’s the only coffee they’ve heard of and feel confident saying. Anyone can invent statistics - 57% of people know that.
The combination of textures works like a dream honest American-style burgers. The combinations Russell has on offer are fantastic and there is something for every taste. Example creations include the rodeo stack, with onion rings and barbecue sauce, or the matador with chorizo and aioli. Russell also plans to introduce special themed burgers throughout the World Cup. I ordered the Mac and Cheese burger, while my companion chose the Brighton B&B, with melted blue cheese, smoked bacon and caramelised onion jam. As an insight into the more traditional side of the menu at Temple Bar, we nibbled on some strips of creamy coconut and

Russell Tisbury is gaining a lot of attention right now - and for good reason. A straight-talking and instantly-likeable bloke, with a good head on his shoulders and a heart of gold, Russell is setting tongues wagging with his revamped menu at Temple Bar. Not to mention his charity challenge. Having formerly managed the kitchen at Hop Poles, Russell made the move to Temple Bar a mere two months ago. It is here that Russell refined his style and created a stripped-back menu that offers both traditional pub food alongside a burger collection - both with a strong emphasis on quality. When it comes to the humble hamburger, there is a plethora to choose from in Brighton and Hove. Some go for the more upmarket, family-friendly creations; others focus on Sussex produce and locallysourced or foraged ingredients; and others want you to have the dirtiest, messiest burger. The Temple Bar has found its own niche by providing straight-up,

coriander chicken satay, dressed with lime and crisp salad leaves as we waited for our meal. These were appetising and showed that Russell has more to him than just burgers. The Mac and Cheese burger was stacked high and crammed full of a large, fresh-off-the-griddle, slightlycharred 28-day-aged Sussex chuck steak patty, with fresh salad leaves, gherkin, crunchy red onion, house relish, mustard, and a thick slice of herb-flecked and decadent Mac and Cheese. The meat patty was excellent and you could really taste the gritty, almost earthy, quality of the meat. The seeded, light bun held
and this is exactly what you’ll get at our place. Elsewhere you might receive a bubbly mountain of badly frothed milk with a whisper of coffee beneath, and alarm bells should definitely ring if your drink is made entirely by a machine, and the only human activity involved is the depression of a button. Easily recognisable by the chocolate sprinkled atop his shiny dome, the Cappuccino, when properly executed, deserves the crown of the King of Coffee that it’s earnt over the last few

The £35 entrance fee to take on this beast of a burger is donated to the Martlets Hospice; a charity close to Russell’s heart. Whether you are a burger-lover or hater, both the traditional and American elements of the menu should tempt you into having a good quality pub meal in a local, friendly boozer. It deserves to be removed from the menu, where it may well be misspelled, and probably sitting uncomfortably to the left of the jacket potatoes, and just above the neon pink cardboard star boasting the addition of ham and cheese Breville toasties.
This unpresuming variety is one of the most historic on the world’s wine map. There are records of it gaining royal favour from the French court more than 1,000 years ago, growing in vineyards on the left bank of the Loire Valley. It has since found its way around the world and is particularly popular in Australia and South Africa, where legend has it that Huguenots, fleeing purges in France in the 1600s, were responsible for its introduction. Perfect for bo th dry and sweeter wines, this vine loves a combination of consistent heat and temperate along with mists and morning dew to reach its full potential. It has a light floral taste, with robust acidic undertones that mellow if harvested late. Also, a major component in dessert wines in the south of France; left to rot on the vine, the sugars take on great sweetness and intensity. The dryer, fresher Chenin Blancs should be paired with fresh fish and seafood, or even lighter game dishes, such a pigeon or pheasant. England’s World Cup campaign begins in earnest in the Amazonian city of Manaus. For some, it is the start of at least a fortnight of high hopes, high drama and, ultimately, crushing disappointment. For others, it is just another reason to look forward to Wimbledon. But what we can all agree on is that the team will play in some of the most fascinating places on our planet. Manaus The most isolated city of England’s group matches, Manaus lies deep in the tropical Amazon rainforest and is accessible generally by plane or boat. At the confluence of the Negro and Solimoes rivers, about 1.9 million people live in a city where life ebbs and flows around the river. England fans and players will find themselves at the heart of Amazonian rainforest life, where the natural environment has nurtured native society and culture for thousands of years. Activities here are set against the startling landscape: from Lake Janauari Ecological Park featuring 9,000 acres of Amazon splendour - to Adolpho Ducke Botanical Garden, visitors can hike, raft and explore. A particular highlight of any visit to Manaus is the “meeting of the waters” - where the Rio Negro and brown Rio Solimoes meet to form the Amazon River itself. At the start of England’s World Cup adventure, the mightiest of rivers begins its own journey deep into the forest.

Sharks looking to stop T20 slide

Sussex Sharks head into an actionpacked weekend of T20 cricket hoping for a brace of wins to propel them back into cup contention. They travel to the Kia Oval tonight (Friday) for a face-off with rivals Surrey before switching to the picturesque setting of Arundel Castle on Sunday for their match with Somerset. Having started the competition with a pair of wins, the Sharks have slumped to three T20 Blast defeats on the spin and will now have to do without Michael Yardy for the foreseeable future. The talented T20 all-rounder has been sidelined for up to two months with a torn bicep – leaving Sussex looking into the possibility of adding a loan signing to their
batting roster. Both Matt Prior and Chris Jordan are unavailable for Sussex as they are on Test duty for England and the Sharks risk seeing their impressive early form in the Natwest T20 Blast count for nothing as rival counties in the South Group jostle for position. The Sharks will be looking to sink their teeth into Kevin Pieterson this evening after the former-England talisman managed just five runs on his return to domestic T20 last week in Surrey’s defeat to Essex. The explosive batsman was jeered by the crowd and suffered a fairly miserable evening – lasting just 11 minutes at the crease. Sunday’s match promises to be just as interesting, with Somerset having recently seen off Sussex with a six wicket win in the LV=Championship County clash. The current County Championship

Straight from Brighton Racecourse Teenage jockey sensation Oisin Murphy has thanked Brighton for giving him a leg up to the big-time. Murphy, 18, moves on to Royal Ascot next week – with an outside chance of an appearance at Race Hill on Tuesday night - after an impressive Derby meeting debut following a win-double at Brighton. He was a superb fifth in the Epsom Classic on Red Galileo and a creditable sixth in the Coronation Cup on Beacon Lady, a Brighton specialist trained by Sussex handler William Knight. The meteoric rise for the Irish pilot began last June when victory at Race Hill was among his earliest triumphs. He followed it with three more wins at the course in 2013. All told he has already had more wins (seven) and rides (42) at Brighton than on any other turf track. Murphy, who has already tasted Group-race success riding Hot Streak in the Temple Stakes at Haydock, told Brighton & Hove Independent: “Brighton rides a lot like Epsom, up and down. It’s good practice for winning the Derby one day? It’s what we dream of, all right! I’ve had some nice bookings at Brighton. I’ve been fortunate.”
“I’ve been very lucky. My success so far all stems from riding nice horses. “My boss Andrew Balding has been very supportive. I’m also indebted to Tommy Stack, Aidan O’Brien and my agent Sara Metcalfe. “My ambition this season it is to keep improving and become Champion Apprentice. We’ll see what the future holds. I need to keep learning. “The best boys – like Ryan Moore (from Brighton), who is the best jockey in the world - are still a long way ahead of me. You strive for to be somewhere near. “But it is down to getting the right horses. They are the ammunition.” Beacon Lady had back-toback victories in as many days at Brighton last year. The horse has rarely finished outside the top two in around ten course outings. Next Tuesday marks the first of four weekly meetings on that day. The one on June 24 coincides with England playing their final group match – against Costa Rica in the football World Cup. And the track offer entry, burger and a pint for £15 and a drinks promotion. The England match will be shown on a 40ft screen after racing.

Hyypiä’s recruitment plans already underway Richard Morris
Sami Hyypiä is determined to improve on the work of his two predecessors in the Albion hot seat and has already started planning his first forays into the transfer market. The 105-cap Finland international was officially unveiled by the Seagulls at the club’s new training ground earlier this week. And the former Liverpool legend revealed he was set for talks with director of football operations David Burke yesterday afternoon (Thursday) about which areas the Albion squad needs strengthening in. Talking publically for the first time since landing the job, Hyypiä explained how impressed he was by the Seagulls infrastructure and was confident the club’s ambitions matched his own. He said: “When I saw the training ground and the stadium I knew they were serious and is the reason why I am sitting here today. “Hopefully I can take the club forward in the next three years. The club has had a few good campaigns in the last few years but my job is to make it better. I will be a happy man if I can take the club forward.” A clutch of Albion backroom staff left with previous head coach Oscar Garcia and Hyypiä plans to recruit replacements over the coming weeks.
His first priority, however, will be adding to the Seagulls currently stretched squad. Matthew Upson, last year’s player of the year, was the standout departure from the playing roster when he left to sign for Premier League Leicester City earlier this summer. Number one Tomasz Kuszczak, creator-in-chief Andrea Orlandi and a number of other first team players were released by the Seagulls, who will need to secure at least half a dozen new signings before the season starts. Hyypiä continued: “My first priority is to get a squad together to have a chance to be successful in the Championship. “I need to sit down and talk about the squad, we have to be quick to get all the players in before training starts.” And he was full of praise for Oscar’s assistant Nathan Jones, who will remain at the club as a coach. “I liked what he said. He’s very professional and his knowledge about football is good. “I will need a few other people in backroom staff, but I’m not in a hurry. Everything is perfect, now we have to make it perfect on the field.” Hyypiä also said he was looking forward to having more of a say in signings after operating more as a head coach at Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga club he managed until earlier this year. chances of going one better than they have managed over the last two campaigns and securing promotion to the top flight. The Albion have already signed Toko Nzuzi from Swiss side Grasshopper Zurich and have been heavily linked with a move for Leyton Orient’s winger Moses Odubajo. The Seagulls are hopeful Leo Ulloa will stay in Sussex for the foreseeable future but Hyypiä will likely look to add another striker to his squad. He will certainly be kept busy over the coming weeks. The one-
time commanding centre back, however, has no regrets about moving into management. “I’m very happy to have gone down this road,” he said. “I have always been an observer of the game. As a player, I observed what managers and players were doing. “My opportunity was unusual in the sense that ten months after I stopped playing, I was managing a Bundesliga club. “That was a good education for me and I have learned a lot. Hopefully I can bring those things to this club.”
Open trials for Albion women’s team Female footballers are being encouraged to try their luck at Brighton and Hove Albion’s open trials. The session is being held at the University of Sussex on Wednesday, June 25 with registration taking place between 6.45pm and 7.15pm and the trial itself running from 7.30pm until 9.15pm. Seagulls supporters asked to pick best team It is the age-old question for football fans: who would be in your dream 11? Now Brighton and Hove Albion supporters are being given the chance to vote on the Seagulls dream team, with the club stocking a t-shirt emblazoned with the winning line-up in the stadium shop. Elevens tops have been produced for a host of top clubs. Now, thanks to local businessman Sam Thomas, who
joined Elevens in 2013, there will soon be an Albion version. Elevens is running an online social media poll throughout June where fans can post their thoughts on who should be in the Albion’s ultimate 11. Supporters on Twitter can share their thoughts by using the hashtag #BHAFCXI before the poll closes on July 3. The final design will be released soon after and stocked in the Seagulls shop ready for the
start of the new season. Albion legends Kerry Mayo and Paul Rogers have backed Elevens’ hunt for the top Brighton team and the firm’s Twitter account, @elevensxi, will be running competitions with fans over the coming weeks.
