Bright Lights is a non-profit organization that takes learning beyond the classroom by providing youth with unique, motivating hands-on learning opportunities.

For students who have completed K–8th grade.

By expanding STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) to include the letter ‘A’ for “art and design,” we are emphasizing the important inclusion of creative thinking, collaboration, experimentation and exploration into the equation. At Bright Lights, we strive to offer hands-on STEM and STEAM opportunities in almost all of our classes and recognize the significance of preparing students for future educational opportunities and careers.

Bring a sack lunch to eat at Lux before heading to the bowling alley at 12:30 PM. Bus transportation will be provided. Students must wear socks in order to bowl. Please plan to pick up your student at 3:00 PM at Sun Valley Lanes.

Parents may be contacted if students are unable to follow these expectations. Teachers and staff may redirect or remove the student from an activity. If the student continues to be disruptive or inappropriate, demonstrates physical aggression or presents a flight risk, the student will be dismissed from the program for the remainder of the summer without refund.

15th Annual Bright Lights Book Fair

On the final day during the last 30 minutes of each class or day camp, parents, grandparents and friends are invited to join their student’s class or camp to share some of their Bright Lights experiences from the week.

We will explore food flavors and learn how to create meals and snacks on your own. There will be new recipes each day and students will have a fun fitness break. On Friday, we will end with an Iron Chef-style cooking competition. You will not want to miss this!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel back in time? This class covers time periods in American history of different American Girls including Felicity, Addy, Rebecca, Kit, Molly, Kaya, Josefina, Kirsten, Samantha and Julie. If you like to learn new hobbies this is just the class for you. We will enjoy sewing, latch hook rug making, Tommy Walkers and writing with a quill pen. Each time period will introduce you to the crafts, food and games authentic to that time.

Join the fun as you bring Mo Willems’ friends Pigeon, Elephant and Piggie to life in a week of writing, drama, crafts and games. Star in your own story with your favorite stuffed animal just like Trixie and Knufflebunny. Design props and construct puppets to act out the friendship ups and downs of Elephant and Piggie. Don’t let the Pigeon finish this class without you!

Take a trip to Seussville for a fun-filled week in the world of children’s author Dr. Seuss. While you travel, you will have a Wacky Wednesday kind of day filled with egg-citing science experiments. Oh, the tricks you will learn, like a balancing act just like the “Cat in the Hat.” Read books and discover Dr. Seuss’s hidden messages. Dabble in the dirt with the Lorax and create a marble run with recycled tubes! Will you have fun here on a summer’s day? Try it, and you may, I say.

Grades Completed: K–1 Class #: 106 Location: Holmes Elementary Strap on your seatbelts as we travel through time to the late 1900s to visit a pioneer family; to Kitty Hawk in the year 1903 to witness the historic first airplane flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright; to 1912 to sail on the Titanic; and to 1969 to witness the first moonwalk! Each day update your Time Travel Logs to remember your travels. Play pioneer games, design passenger boats and perform anti-gravity experiments.

Follow the turtle and tortoise tracks as you discover the differences between these two reptiles.

Learn about their amazing life cycles and make your own special turtle shells to wear during the week. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo for a behind-the-scenes view of the turtle and tortoise exhibit.

Learn about the kinds of penguins and how big they are compared to humans. Discover how penguins survive in extremely cold weather.

Activities may include making blubber gloves and learning about insulation, writing a penguin poem and enjoying Arctic-inspired snacks. On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at the Lincoln Children’s Zoo for a trip to the Humboldt Penguin Habitat.

q Cupcake Decorating Wars

Test your cake decorating skills by creating a work of edible art. Gather inspiration for your cupcake creations as you learn about different holiday celebrations. Practice a variety of techniques with buttercream frosting on graham crackers and use your artistic talents as you learn to add decorative details. Each day, help judge the creativity of each others’ creations.

Learn about careers in cake decorating and food science. On Friday, showcase your talent to your family and friends as you decorate a cupcake using the skills you have learned all week.

Spend the week with us at Makit Takit as we explore the messiest of crafts. We’ll be making several different kinds of slime, splatter painting and learning how to do pour paintings. We’ll also spend some time making prints using gel plates and turning those prints into journals. We can’t forget our spa day either! We’ll be making sugar scrubs and bath bombs to help us clean up after a week of messy making. You’ll take home multiple projects and good memories from this class!

Grades Completed: 3–6 Class #: 130 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $12 Materials Learn the latest tricks, trends and techniques for using tools, beads and findings to create a unique piece of jewelry. Use creative materials such as shrink plastic, bottle caps, metal stamps and beads to create necklaces, bracelets, bookmarks, earrings and much more. Students will create 10–15 different projects that they will take home at the end of the week! Guest designers will share their work and help students learn what it is like to start a business. Students will also learn merchandising skills in order to create a display for the week’s projects. Become a real-life secret agent learning about cryptography, the science of making and breaking codes. Explore how to crack codes using ciphers. With this new secret intelligence, construct your own book of secret codes and complete a scavenger hunt written in secret messages. You will also discover more about the use of cryptography in agencies like the CIA and other types of secret communication like Morse and Binary Code.

q Paddle Sports: Hit the Water

Grades Completed: 4–6 Class #: 136 Location: East High School Pool/Holmes Lake Park Fee: $20 Facilities

Build your skills and open the door to become a lifelong lover of aquatic paddle sports. Learn how to control a kayak and then further develop your skills and comfort in the boat by playing games. Discover how to paddle when conditions are not always favorable, and take a turn at maneuvering canoes and stand up paddle boards. On Monday the class will take place in the East High School pool to help you become comfortable with kayaks and to introduce general paddle skills. Tuesday through Friday, classes will be at Holmes Lake to practice with the added challenge of wind and waves. In case of inclement weather, class will be held at the Lincoln East High School pool. Please note: This is a water sport. Students should be comfortable in and around water. Life jackets and all equipment will be provided. Students are required to wear a properly fitted life jacket during class. Bring a towel, wear shoes that can get wet or sandals with straps, and wear clothing you would be comfortable swimming in.

Grades Completed: 4–6 Class #: 138 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $20 Materials If you’ve been dreaming of playing ukulele for weeks, months or years, this class takes you from no ukulele skills to playing melodies and chords after one week. Life after “Uke Can Do It” includes your own ukulele to keep, the necessary skills to maintain your instrument, the knowledge of how to play several songs in a variety of styles, and the know-how to learn new songs that interest your unique musical taste. This class is designed for students with little to no ukulele experience.

On Friday, we will welcome guests into our classroom to help create our own sidewalk chalk and view the projects we created.

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 300 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials At Wizarding Academy, students will enjoy taking classes that all of our favorite witches and wizards participated in at Hogwarts! Students will start with getting all of their essentials at Diagon Alley. They will then participate in herbology, astronomy, care of magical creatures and so many more wizarding classes. Students will take part in a Quidditch match and a game of wizarding chess. They will learn to make several delicious wizarding snacks and we will end our week with a Holidays at Hogwarts celebration highlighting all the fun of a wizarding winter!

Grades Completed: 1–2 Class #: 210 Location: Holmes Elementary Before orbiting the galaxy you must master the skills of an astronaut. Practice completing space chores with astronaut-type gloves, build a space station and taste astronaut food including ice cream! Track constellations and learn amazing facts about the planets. You can’t launch your film canister rocket until you learn about the Earth’s rotation and location. Out in space, discover art, music and literature in another galaxy. Prepare for blast off!

Learn about the basic areas of the brain in order to understand what part of the brain helps you talk, think, smell and feel. Grades Completed: 4–7 Class #: 302 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $5 Materials Design, build and program robots using the most advanced and newest LEGO® robotics technology—the powerful MINDSTORMS® EV3. Work as a team to complete real-world engineering and computer science challenges as you build and command robots that walk, talk, think and do anything you can imagine.

With your ideas and the latest LEGO operating system and sensors, there are no limits to what you can do.

Level 2—Explorer: Completed at least one class at Level 1 and/or experience through another program.

Objectives are sensors, loops and switches.

Guitar Discovery is for the beginner who has no experience at all with the guitar, or the person who has some rough basic guitar skills. If you want to learn how to play guitar (notes, riffs, chords, songs) this class is a great introduction. Small groups each work with an instructor, which means a lot of fun and learning can take place. You’ll be loaned an electric guitar by Dietze Music for the class, which you can take home each night to practice. You’ll receive a packet of information with songs, riffs, exercises and notes that you’ll keep and be able to learn from for years to come. If you’re willing to practice, we’ll show you the way forward to rocking the guitar!

You will be introduced to the Engineering Grand Challenges and various disciplines of engineering through special presentations and activities by College of Engineering faculty, students, and staff. Activities throughout the week may include designing with VEX robotics, creating a simple lie detector, solar energy activities, designing roller coasters and more. q It’s All Greek to Me: Olympus Adventures

If you think you can defeat the Basilisk or the Minotaur, then spend the week on Mt. Olympus exploring the gods and goddesses of Greek myths and legends. Learn about the Trojan War, perform a play, write myths and compete in an Arachne weaving contest. A week-long board-game of By Jove! and standing with Greek Hoplites in an outdoor game called Phalanx are just part of the fun. On Friday, we will enjoy a Greek feast, dressing in tunics and sharing the week’s adventure on Mt. Olympus.

As you become masters in the art of camouflage, we will discover the ways insects and animals seem to disappear. Choose and research a fellow master of invisibility in the animal kingdom, discover the needs of camouflage and learn how you can develop a keen eye for hidden creepy crawlies waiting to jump. Get ready, it’s about to get wild in here!

On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at Pioneers Park where students will experience some real-life camouflage activities.

q Exploring Natural Disasters

Do you feel the ground shaking? Oh no, it’s an EARTHQUAKE! This is one of many topics that will be explored as we swirl like a tornado into learning about natural disasters. As you learn how these disasters can occur, you will create different types of disasters using food experiments.

These might include a gelatin and marshmallow earthquake, a chocolatey mudslide or an icy blizzard. Investigate where disasters happen across the United States and research how they occur. Warn visitors to be careful on Friday when they visit our classroom -- or they might be blown away by a wind storm!

Search for the daily team challenge envelope containing creative games and crafts that will test your abilities in science, math and writing. Celebrate your teamwork by creating a flag and proudly wearing your team colors. Finish off the week with a scavenger hunt that will determine the Amazing Race Champions!

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 820 Location: Holmes Elementary Test your paleontology skills as you dig deeper into your dinosaur knowledge to work with fossils and explore the biology and science of dinosaur history. We will learn how dinosaurs are named, identify dinosaur anatomy and explore online resources of the American Museum of Natural History to help us get “up close and personal” with these amazing creatures. Learn how to be a critical thinker as we dig up and fact-check common misconceptions about dinosaurs.

q Use the Force: The Physics of Motion

Grades Completed: 3–5 Class #: 822 Location: Holmes Elementary Fee: $18 Field Trip Investigate the forces behind movement by looking at potential and kinetic energy. May the force be with you as you drop eggs into a glass of water. Investigate Newton’s three laws of motion with exciting hands-on activities, then apply these laws to sound, light and magnetism.

On Thursday, parents will drop off and pick up at Lincoln Laser Tag for behind the scenes research on lasers, as well as a game or two of laser tag.

Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 826 Location: Lincoln High School Discover how genetic engineering is a common and essential practice in biotechnology and how scientists are using genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In our classroom lab you will purify plasmids and inoculate bacterial cultures to create glowing bacteria (a genetically modified organism). In addition, you will also have an opportunity to bring the abstract concept of DNA into a concrete visual by isolating and storing your DNA in a unique necklace.

Grades Completed: 6–8 Class #: 828 Location: Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center Fee: $18 Facilities Become the next Archery Superhero and discover the physics of energy conversion, test how three types of bows store potential energy and investigate why superheroes use different bows for different scenarios. This all-around outdoor skills class features archery, slingshots, tomahawk and atlat, and will take your skills to the next level. Enjoy a week with the Outdoor Education Center staff exploring and challenging yourself with a variety of outdoor skills. Focus on the physics of archery each day by participating in exciting range activities that develop proper shooting technique in an environment that fosters self-confidence, focus and team building skills. Students must be 11 years old or older.
