from the team Welcome to the first edition of the MyKindaFuture e-magazine for the 2016 / 17 academic year! We are really happy to bring you a bumper freshers’ edition of the e-magazine packed with over 20 different opportunities from leading employers as well as their advice and guidance for students.

MyKindaFuture believes in giving every young person equal power and opportunity to shape their future. We produce our e-magazine each month to help university students from any year or course to get a head start in the graduate market and connect with employers across the country. We

also support a network of student led Bright Futures societies, you might have seen one on your campus already! These societies are great as they run fun events and activities with employers that will help you in your job hunt, whatever industry you want to head into. You can find your university’s society here where you can sign up to find out what’s happening on campus. If you can’t see your university listed, then please get in touch with us and we can see if we can get one going!

How to survive your first term at univeristy!

Going to university can be very daunting. That’s why we’ve gathered top tips from current students and graduates to help you get through your first term.

BE MONEY EFFICIENT

BE INDEPENDENT

Remember – the permanent lack of money funding student life is joked about for a reason.

Even when your loan comes in, don’t go crazy – you have to stretch that over 3-4 month periods.

For many, going to university is the biggest step towards independence, and unfortunately can also be the biggest experience of homesickness too.

It’s perfectly normal to miss home, but try not to get bogged down – keep yourself busy (and social) and you’ll have settled in before you know it.

Take full advantage of the all-mighty NUS card.

It’s only £15 for a year, and after only a week or two it’ll have paid for itself and you’ll be enjoying discounts all over the shops. 40% off a restaurant bill mid-week isn’t too shabby.

Now you’re a student, embrace it! Put down the much-loved brands and welcome supermarket ‘basics’ with open arms. You’ll learn to love 19p baked beans… maybe.

Walk! Public transport fees can add up quickly, so stay fit and get to know your new surroundings at the same time by taking a stroll when possible.

BE HEALTHY For your first term, there’s always the possibility of the ‘Freshers’ Flu’. Investment in a tub of chewable Vitamin C tablets could be your saving grace.

Although regular stocks of avocado, kale and spinach probably aren’t within your budget reach, it doesn’t mean you can’t be healthy! Bags of frozen veg are always a good idea.

Make your room your own – you’ll be spending a lot of time there, so add a personal touches like posters and photos.

Familiarise yourself with your campus, induction periods and your timetable – no one likes being that person to walk into lectures 20 minutes late because they got lost. Campus tours are always available during Freshers’ Week.

BE SOCIAL This is probably the most important tip – be social!

University friends are often friends for life, so go find them! Try to make good connections with both your housemates and your course mates.

Join a club or society. Most universities have an extensive range of groups in sport, politics, hobbies, campaigning and academic areas for you to sign up to and become a part of.

T h e g r a d u a t e e m p l oy m e n t market has always been competitive, and for the students graduating in the coming years it’s only going to get more so.

Indeed, the Association of G r a d u a t e Re c r u i t e r s ( A G R ) recently announced the first drop in graduate vacancies in 4 years.

But in this ultra-competitive graduate market, how can you get ahead of competition?

Well, the real secret lies in your ability to play – and dominate – the new graduate recruitment game.

This new game is based on the candidate’s knowledge, more so than ever before. Naturally, you need to immerse yourself in information about the job role, the company itself and broader industry knowledge.

But, crucially, this new version of the graduate recruitment game is centred on the applicant’s knowledge of the recruitment industry as a whole.

When searching for jobs, ask yourself: Who is recruiting g r a d u a t e s ? W h e n a re t h e y recruiting? What does their recruitment process look like (the

number of assessment stages, the type of assessment methods etc.)?

Why is this necessary? Because you can only master a process you understand in the first place!

A good understanding of what the rules are keeps you abreast of what is happening in the industry – and these rules change frequently. For example, did you know that KMPG have reformed t h e i r g r a d u at e re c r u it m e n t process from 3 assessments over several weeks to a one-dayonly session? Or that Goldman Sachs is replacing face-to-face on campus recruitment with video interviewing? Hundreds more companies are similarly amending their entry-level requirements and processes every quarter.

So here’s two simple things you can do to boost your chances: 1.

Guide your search by the quality vs quantity rule (only apply to the companies you’d REALLY like to work for and make sure you undertake in-depth research before applying) 2.

Ask more senior graduates about the company you want

to work for, use Linkedin and industry events to speak directly with professionals already in the role you want and call on to agency recruiters. They can be a great source of knowledge and normally provide lots of insight not only into the company you are interviewing with, but the recruitment market as a whole.

These simple steps will help you create a plan to prepare, boost your confidence and help you keep stress under control.

Know what to apply for and when

While this may seem fairly obvious, make sure that you keep on top of your workload and manage your time effectively. Firms will ask for your first year grades when making an application. So although these grades may not count towards your final degree result, they will count towards your career.

Law firms typically target their vacancies towards students at certain stages in their studies. Check firm websites for information about application deadlines and what you are eligible to apply for.

Ashurst’s top tip: Look ahead and know what university contact time, exams and other deadlines you have scheduled. This will get you in the habit of planning your time – a useful skill for when you are attending interviews and assessment days.

Get involved Get involved with university life as much as possible. Societies and other clubs are a great way to develop your skills, while meeting new people and broadening your network. Firms are looking for well-rounded candidates that have something to say outside of their studies.

Ashurst’s top tip: If you can hold a position of responsibility in any society or club you join, this will help enhance your application, demonstrating your team work and communication skills.

Once you have made your shortlist, focus on meeting them when they are on campus and at any open days they may be hosting in their offices. develop your commercial awareness Firstly, ensure that you understand what the term ‘commercial awareness’ means. Once you are confident with this, focus on developing your own commercial knowledge. An understanding of the wider commercial world is a key competency firms look for when reviewing application forms and during interviews.

Ashurst’s top tip: Subscribing to relevant magazines or emails is a great way to receive up to date information on a regular basis.

Meet Hannah, an economics grad on BP’s Trading Graduate Scheme...

As part of this effort we decided to find out how Hannah joined BP’s trading team found herself here and what advice they would give to other women considering their career.

“During my first year I was on the crude oil bench mainly doing analytics and trade support. Now I have moved over to fuel oil operations, the logistics behind the movement of the oil. The responsibility I have been given is amazing, I have been relied on straight from 10

the beginning which is immensely motivating.

While there are a lot more men than women it is not that archetypal trading floor culture I imagined, it is actually really nice and supportive – things have moved on. And as a career it almost feels a privilege to work in an area of industry that affects so much of the everyday lives of people around the world – the trading of energy resources. I often watch international news items on the TV in the evening wondering how they will affect my work the next day – it demonstrates the very real link between the trading floor and the political and economic world around us.

Finishing university and preparing for your first job is an exciting prospect.

That said, it can’t hurt to be prepared.

Daniella joined Lloyds Banking Group’s as an Analyst on the Graduate Leadership Programme, and has some handy advice to help you make a happy transition from university into the workplace.

Get involved in all aspects of uni life

Be prepared to be the most (and least)

A full life at university – including volunteering experience – prepared me for the world of work.

I was the university representative for a social enterprise that coordinates student volunteer programmes around the world. Funnily enough, we have a similar way of organising teams here.

Whether you are volunteering, part of a society or a student media group, you’ll enhance your ability to work in diverse teams, manage your time, and even develop leadership skills. It’s also a fun way to prepare for your next big social engagement – work.

People here are very open and willing to share their knowledge in order to improve, so we’re always asking questions and searching for the best answers. If you want to make an impression, and contribute to the team, asking questions of yourself and processes, is an excellent starting point. Alternatively, if you see something that could be improved and have well thought-out ideas, you should have the confidence to share them, too.

Maintain your interests Refresh your wardrobe This is a personal preference, but a smart suit (with pockets!) made a world of difference to me, on my first day. I admit that my ‘university uniform’ of jeans and trainers was not going to cut-it, and I wanted to feel confident that I could carry my own. Having a professional-looking wardrobe also helps you project an image of how you’d like to be perceived by colleagues, so it might be work investing in clothes that communicate who you are in a work setting.

Your interests are what make you unique, so making time for them will mean you’ll feel more fulfilled in all parts of your life. At university I built a finance app because I love UX design. It ended up as a Top 100 app in seventeen countries and Number 2 in Burkina Faso! I’m already thinking of new ideas for the next one. Plus, you never know – you might find a group at your new workplace who are equally passionate about the same things you are and that makes every day feel even more fun.

Danielle joined the Diageo Supply Graduate programme last year after studying Chemistry with Medicinal Chemistry. Her first rotation has been in our Global Operational Excellence team as part of the Environmental Sustainability team.

What made you choose Diageo?

What’s the application process like?

I found it really hard when I was choosing a graduate scheme because every company sells itself so well to prospective graduates. How do you know that you’ll be a good fit for a company when they’re all telling you the same thing? Honestly, I think you really have to go with that ‘gut feeling’ and think about what makes you happy in your job. I wanted to feel relaxed and able to just be myself, I know that’s when I’m at my best.

Diageo’s greatest attribute, to me, is its diversity because I feel respected as I am and I don’t feel like I have to pretend to be something I’m not. I first became interested in Diageo because of my passion for whisky but it was on the assessment day that I really fell in love with Diageo.

I wasn’t met by a group of clones; I was met by a group of individuals.

The overall application process went really smoothly for me but I did find the video interview a bit challenging.

The best part was the assessment day because I was encouraged to talk about what I wanted from my career and what I enjoyed as well as where I had struggled in the past. It was clear that the assessors were keen to find out where in Diageo I would make a good fit. As a result I am now working in a role which I absolutely love.

How was your first day at Diageo?

I was so nervous on my first day. I arrived with my blouse on inside-out! Terrible! Now I feel like I’ve really settled in. There are still moments when I’m pushed out of my comfort zone but that is one of the reasons why I love it so much. My most prominent feeling on the first day

was excitement. I was so excited to meet all the other graduates and find out more about my role.

What’s your advice for anyone applying?

My advice would be to have a good think about what you like and what you don’t like and why. What are you good at and where do you want to improve? Be honest and open and if you can, try to get some feedback from others too. The aim of this graduate scheme is to produce future leaders so you have to be able to show that you can take the lead and drive your own development.

As a new year starts at Universities across the UK, we’re getting ready to kick off a very new looking Fast Stream! But a few things have changed.

First thing’s first – we have a new website! It has colour, it has photos – and most importantly, it doesn’t feel like you’re applying for a passport anymore! You can find our new home with all the latest information at www.faststream.gov.uk.

Secondly, gone are the days of waiting half a year to find out whether you’re on the Fast Stream – this year we’re switching up our application process so that from the moment of registration, you will find out within 12-16 weeks whether you’ll be on the Fast Stream.

And that’s not all! We’ve removed the online numeracy and verbal reasoning tests (except for statistical roles), so no need to get that dusty GCSE Maths textbook out of the attic!

We’ve got a lot of other exciting things to show you, and we hope you can’t wait to get started on applying to an exciting Fast Stream this year.

Bright Futures societies are a network of student led societies supported and connected

by MyKindaFuture. Each society is run by a great team of committee members who work with top employers to run events and activities for fellow students to develop their employability, connections and knowledge to get a great job after university.

To help support our committee members, each year we run a big training day in London for all societies. This year, we were very lucky to have magic circle law firm, Clifford Chance, as our generous hosts as we were joined by over 30 different societies and 16 employers enjoying the views across London from the 30th floor.

What is C4 Pop Up? C4 Pop Up is a national outreach programme of skills workshops and challenges, taking place across the UK, to promote careers within the media industry and to identify undiscovered talent.

As the official UK broadcaster of the Rio 2016 Paralympic games, the theme of diversity and inclusivity is central to the project and the young people will be working on Rio-inspired media challenges. Workshops focus on factual production, digital marketing, or

Who can apply? journalism, and are facilitated by our tutors and Channel 4 freelancers.

At the end of each workshop, the challenge submissions will be viewed and judged by a C4 panel.

Each winning team will be announced. Meanwhile, individuals who are identified as possing talent (based on merit, aptitude and effort) will be offered CV-enhancing opportunities with Channel 4.

The event is for anyone over 16 who wants to break into the media industry. We never say ‘you must have this’ or ‘you must be like that’ we love it when the group is really diverse. All that matters is that you’re truly passionate about the media industry, and that you’ve got a bit of raw talent that sets you apart from the crowd.
