Welcome to Bridport & West Dorset Open Studios 8-16 september 2018 Dear Visitor, Bridport has become known as the leading Arts community in the West Country and our annual Open Studios event celebrates this vibrant Visual Arts Scene.

Started in 1999 by Caroline Ireland, the event has grown over the years to become a distinctive showcase for the Artists who live and work in West Dorset.

This year 90 of West Dorset’s Finest Artists, Designers and Makers invite you to share a fascinating glimpse into their creative process. There will be a wide variety of visual arts to enjoy including painting, printmaking, illustration, ceramics, jewellery, textiles, glass, furniture and sculpture.

We encourage you to engage in conversation with the artists, seizing your opportunity to discover more about their creative process and view their most recent work. Our Open Studio event offers the rare opportunity to buy original art directly from the Artists, as well as to commission new work from them.

To celebrate our twentieth anniversary, we are delighted that renowned artist and Royal Academician Philip Sutton is Bridport Open Studios' 2018 Patron.

Our 2018 Guide Cover artist is the celebrated abstract painter Jon Adam, and widely respected photographer Pete Millson has been taking a series of engaging portraits of participating artists. We are especially grateful to our wonderful sponsor Sculpture by the Lakes, an award-winning garden nestled in

26 acres of Dorset's glorious countryside, an oasis for art lovers and collectors, created by renowned sculptor Simon Gudgeon and his wife, Monique.

Follow the maps in this Guide to visit studios, galleries, workshops and even some artists’ homes across West Dorset. Bridport Open Studios showcases the work of veteran names, emerging artists and keen newcomers. Whatever your taste in art, we are sure that you will find much to enjoy – whether it is for investment, pleasure or to support local artists.

This year the Open event is particularly poignant following a devastating fire at St Michael’s Studios. Several of Bridport’s veteran Artists have lost their studios, materials and life’s work, whilst many more have been affected by temporary closures. Several displaced Artists will be showing in different venues across Bridport, a tribute to the wonderfully supportive and resilient art scene that continues to flourish here.

We are delighted that Philip Sutton RA is our patron as we celebrate the twentieth year of Bridport Open Studios. Not only is Philip a distinguished artist, he is also a friend and inspiration to many artists working in Bridport. His kindness, modesty, and generosity of spirit is an example to us all.

Born in Poole, Dorset in 1928, Philip grew up in humble surroundings in London’s East End, leaving school at fourteen and briefly worked in a drawing office before completing his national service during the Berlin Airlift. He then attended the Slade School of Fine Art, studying under William Coldstream with contemporaries Craigie Aitcheson, Michael Andrews and Euan Uglow.

Sutton’s optimism, his stylistic freedom and irrepressible use of colour swiftly attracted attention. Asked to become a Royal Academician in 1988, Philip has developed an international following and his work has been displayed at The Royal Academy, The Tate, The Globe, The Welsh Assembly, Kensington Palace, & The UK Parliament, with exhibitions in London, Paris, Sydney, and Chicago.

Sculpture Greta Berlin works in steel and stone and, sometimes paints, the figure, dogs and birds, in their many and varied states of being. From very small to very large, the latter to be seen in the landscape on our hill.

Sculpture, Letter-carving & Drawings When stone carving I work from my intuition and dreams. I watch carefully what my subconscious throws up once I've had my first idea for a new piece of work.

Votive images appear from nowhere capturing my attention. It can take months of note making, sketching, making maquettes. Then I let the stone speak to me, drawing on it with charcoal. It’s visceral. I love the sound as my chisel hits the stone. My feelings are paramount. Thinking at this point is death to the imagination and process. My work is figurative, and colour is vital to me. Bold strokes of charcoal and pastel. I am strongly influenced by early to mid C20 painters, and the Bloomsbury Group as I was formerly Curator at Charleston Farmhouse.

west of bridport 5. Artists of the Jurassic Coast Painting, Ceramics & Pottery John Boyd: John's love of the Dorset landscape is evident in his atmospheric paintings. Working in oil, watercolour and mixed media.

Marion Taylor: Known for her depictions of Colmers Hill, Marion's paintings are rich in pattern and colour. Lynne Grace: Lynne's vibrant and experimental paintings reflect her exploration of, and fascination with the landscape. Charlotte Miller: Charlotte's semi abstract paintings using mixed media are inspired by the local landscape and coastal paths.

Maggie Cooke: Imaginative works in porcelain combine fine art and ceramics. Maggie gathers inspiration from nature, wildlife and the coast.

Brian Cocks: Brian's paintings are concerned with light and colour, either with tree forms appearing to glow or the varying effects of light.

David Emery: David believes in pushing boundaries and has produced large sculptural pieces for the garden, heavily influenced by Japanese screen prints.

Colleen du Pon Metal Colleen du Pon earned a BA in Silversmithing and Metalwork at Camberwell College of Arts in London in 2002 and has since worked as an Artist Blacksmith and Metal Sculptor, combining traditional forging techniques with contemporary metalworking processes to create works deeply influenced by the natural world.

I use personal observation and imagination to portray an idea, sometimes working in a progressive series in order to reduce an idea to its bare essentials.

Jem: The new studio prompts an experimental body of two and three dimensional work inspired by reflections on music, migration and objects.

Mixed Media Investigative, spiritual, process driven enquiry. The work explores matter, materiality, transience and fragility through experimental play with many mediums: paint, paper, fabric, plaster, ink, tape, concrete and pen. Texture and a limited palette feature in many paintings and small sculptures.

Sculpture & Drawings My sculpture is inspired by my lifelong interest in wildlife and the outdoors.

I focus on the overall essence and movement of animals and wildlife primarily, using strong gestural strokes in any material. Working directly from life, I produce bronzes for inside the home as well as larger garden pieces.

EAST of bridport 19. Kit Glaisyer Oil paintings Kit Glaisyer is in a new studio following the fire at St Michael's Studios. He works in the Romantic tradition with his Cinematic Landscape series of paintings of West Dorset, creating immersive, panoramic vistas that engage the viewer in an emotional relationship with the natural environment, in an evocative dreamscape where light, darkness and a transcendent experience of nature is experienced. He featured in the 2012 Portrait Prize at Bath’s Holburne Museum; exhibited a retrospective of 45 paintings at the Octagon Gallery in Bath in 2013; was Highly Commended at the Marshwood Arts Awards, Bridport Arts Centre, in 2015 and ran the Garden Gallery - a project space in Bath in 2017.

Sladers Yard Gallery Paintings, Ceramics & Furniture Still Light is an exhibition of Alex Lowery’s remarkable addictive and contemplative paintings of the Chesil beach from West Bay to Portland. Fiamma Montagu Ceramics, Sculpture, Stoneware & Porcelain Fiamma Colonna Montagu is a ceramic sculptor specialising in large scale sculptures, as well as smaller works in stoneware and porcelain. Her work ranges from tiny works to large scale installations. Fiamma has recently moved her studio from Oxfordshire to The Old Timberyard, West Bay, Bridport with the intention of creating a new studio/workshop which will allow collaboration between herself and other artists/architects/designers who would like to work in ceramics but have no technical training. Alongside running the ‘working studio’, Fiamma continues to work as an artist, focussing on her large pieces which are sold on commission around the UK and internationally. She also works on new mass large scale installations. In 2014 Fiamma was the Producer for PCC of ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ – the installation of 888,246 ceramic poppies at the Tower of London – and subsequently invented the ‘Tour’ of Poppies 2014-2018 which will finish up at the Imperial War Museum later this year.

Oil on Linen/canvas Adam's distinctive oil paintings express an emotional interpretation and abstraction of the world around him, working with the surface and an evocative use of colour to build depth, Adam creates his own world of abstracted expressions.

Ceramics My pots reflect the spontaneity of the slipware tradition of decorating with coloured clays on semi-dry pots. Using terracotta and white slip, colours are applied in different ways, with brushes, sponges and slip trailers, gradually building bold patterns around the pots for a loose, abstract effect.

Painting, Drawing & Sculpture / Collage & Painting Mart’s imagery is mostly derived from features of the natural world, imaginatively interpreted to express a very personal vision. Recent work increasingly uses this in an abstract context. Ali makes semi abstract collages from papers which have been painted in a free style. The images are imaginative and are dictated by the random outcomes of the painting.

Stained Glass Jude is an experienced and highly skilled designer, who has been working to commission for clients for twenty-five years. She seeks to translate the qualities of her original art work into glass, and has exhibited some of her painted work. Jude also teaches traditional glazing skills.

Oil Paintings & Mixed Media Drawings Judith Gait will be showing her recent work, a series of oils on gesso ground, a process which utilizes underpainting and multiple layers of glazing to achieve richness of colour. Judith Gait's work is held in public and private collections in England and abroad. She studied Fine Art in California, The Ruskin School of Drawing in Oxford, and the University of the West of England.

St Michael’s Trading Estate tage Art & Vin

During the heatwave of Summer 2018, there was a devastating fire at St Michael’s Studios and fifteen artists there have lost their studios. Paul Blow, Suzanna Hubbard, Russ Snedker (42), Peggy Cozzi, Alastair Crawford and Andrew Leppard lost their entire studios to the fire. The studios on the floor below, although spared the flames, suffered extensive water and structural damage. Those artists include Kit Glaisyer (19), David Brooke & Caroline Ireland (35), Brian Johnston and Marion Irons. And in the adjacent Studio 6, artists Marion Taylor (5 & 10), Charlotte Miller (5), Anna Sullock and John Boyd (5) had to move out for safety reasons.

Luckily, however, the other end of the building was not damaged in the fire, so Sally Davies & Elizabeth Sporne (40) will once again be showing in their Studio in the Attic. And there is now a cluster of artists nearby, with Fiona Neylan & Jenny Penney (38) across the road, plus Jennie Hanrahan & Maggie Luck (39) next door in the Green Shack. Then, on the other side of the building in Foundry Yard, you’ll find sculptor Isla Chaney (41) and a group of painters: Ellie Preston, Rob Morgan & Russ Snedker (42) in Unit 6.

Also, you can now visit many of the St Michael’s Artists in new spaces around town, while others are exhibiting with other artists. Kit Glaisyer (19) will be showing in his new Bradpole studio, David Brooke & Caroline Ireland (35) are exhibiting at Chris Neaves’s studio on Gundry Lane. You can find Marion Taylor (5 & 10) showing with Katherine Lloyd (10) in West Milton and also showing with Charlotte Miller & John Boyd with The Artists of the Jurassic Coast (5) in Eype.

Many of the remaining St Michael’s Artists were locked-out of their studios for five weeks, and unfortunately several have been forced to pull out of Open Studios all together this year; they include David Smith, Steve Rose, Squirrell Bindery & Press, and Franny Owen.

Millinery & Accessories, Art & Design / Sculpted Landscapes Fiona designs, makes and sources individual hats, headwear and accessories for all occasions using traditional hat-blocking techniques from straws, sinamay and felts. Each item is uniquely decorated with a range of materials and designs.

She also exhibits a collection of her drawings, paintings and prints and local artwork in Studio48. Jenny explores a unique interpretative medium to produce her colourful and grey scale sculpted Dorset landscapes. There are many well known honeypots and some less known areas of our stunning heritage coastline on view. Originals, prints and cards are available for purchase.

Ceramics Jennie creates sculptural pieces which are fire-smoked in a pit using ancient techniques. She is currently working on a range of brightly decorated tableware.

Jennie also teaches ceramics and runs classes locally all year.

Maggie is a new participant having recently moved to Bridport. She was previously part of London Potters and mainly throws stoneware functional pots for everyday use, with the occasional foray into more experimental work.

Ellie Preston, Rob Morgan & Russ Snedker Oil painting Ellie Preston: In my art, I have moved from a dedicated focus on figurative art towards an involvement in abstract expressionism. I guess that as my practice has developed I have gained more confidence to explore ideas. At the moment I am working on a series of studies in tonal progression and build up of layers to build a sense of depth. Rob Morgan: Truly abstract paintings that focus on colour and mark-making: oils, gouache and pastels; large and small. Russ Snedker: Latest work explores a world full of life under our skies and oceans and the fragmentation between them. Also a memory of work from the fire in the studios on 7/7/18.
