Care packages headed to Ukraine Sisters to work in refuge camp; to deliver MOMS kids’ relief kits
By Wayne E. Rivet Staff Writer FRYEBURG — As Mary Brigid Curtis watched the Russian invasion of Ukraine — seeing homes destroyed, innocent people killed, and families fleeing to nearby Poland for safety — she instantly knew she had to do something. As a project manager, the Casco resident considers herself somewhat of a “fixer.” While she knows the war in Ukraine has no easy fix, Curtis feels volunteering her time to help refuges is her part in the overall solution. So, Curtis recruited her sister, Sheila Donahue of Norway, and signed on to work at the World Central PACKING UP CARE KITS is Molly Ockett School Kitchen at the Poland-

Ukraine border. They took a flight out of Boston on Sunday, and arrived Monday morning in Poland, followed up with a three-hour ride to their destination. But, before the sisters made their humanitarian trip, they spent a few hours on Friday with Molly Ockett School third graders, who decided as their way to help the Ukrainians, they and their families collected a variety of items from tooth brushes, tooth paste, deodorant, nail clippers, combs and towels and created care packages with the help of teacher Brian Cushing. Those care kits included personal messages, which students wrote in Ukraine along with colorful drawings. The kits were
placed in two large suitcases. “These kids are amazing,” Curtis said. The connection between Curtis and Donahue with the Molly Ockett third graders came out of the blue. Donahue has a friend, whom she worked with who knows Cushing (they attend Eden Towle with art work. the same church, the First Congregational Church in Bridgton). “Through that mutual friend, this all started,” Curtis said. The ball actually started to roll a short time after Russia invaded Ukraine in late February. “I thought to myself I want to do something. At that time, I sent an Instagram message PACKAGES, Page 2A Iver Minnich
Lions’ select Carter for Glover Service Award
The Bridgton Lions Club has chosen Larry Carter of the Bridgton Recreation Advancement Group (BRAG) as the “Al” Glover Nonprofit Leadership Award winner for 2022. Carter was chosen from nine outstanding nominees submitted recently by Bridgton area nonprofit organizations. It was said of Carter in his nomination letter that, “He has been on the BRAG Board of Directors for 14 years, usually as president, and has also served as the ‘Clerk of the Works’ at the Kendal and Anna Ham
Recreational Complex. “From April to November one can see Larry working on the complex after the sun goes down. “He has devoted countless hours to fund raising, coordinating with contractors, seeking volunteers, recruiting numerous Cal Ripken tournaments, and involving community support. “In a word, without his efforts and contributions the complex would not be where it is today.” Now retired after 31 years with the Sysco Foods sales department, Carter continues his 27-year involve-
ment with the Sebago Long Lake Cal Ripken Baseball League, which serves seven area towns; here too, he has usually been the its president. In this connection, he is also a member of the Hall of Fame of the league and is currently the statewide and district Commissioner for the league. His wife Lyn is also active on the BRAG board and has been instrumental in assisting in its fund-raising efforts. The Carters are parents of five children. Their daughter Laurie died of a rare heart defect, which was the incentive for the Carters
to raise $50,000 for the naming of the softball field at the BRAG complex in her honor. In a recent phone interview with Carter presently in Florida, he was asked what projects needed to be completed before the complex is turned over to the Town of Bridgton in July. He stated that finished plumbing in the lavatories of the Concession Stand needs to be done; and some commercial level electrical connections made and siding for the stand installed. It is hoped that these needs will be addressed by volunteer professionals in their respective fields. The local Lions Club plans to present Carter with the second annual Glover award at a special dinner in his honor on May 9 at the Bridgton Community Center. Representatives of BRAG will also be invited. Carter will receive a plaque

Harrison articles carry ‘no recommendation’
BUSY SEAMSTRESS — Girl Scout Meghan Case decided to earn her Silver Award by hand-sewing bookbags and donating the bags to the Casco Public Library for its patrons to use instead of plastic. There were multiple steps involved: Getting companies to donate fabric, cutting all the material, seeking the assistance of a local quilting group, and sewing 120 bookbags on her own. (De Busk Photo)
By Wayne E. Rivet Staff Writer HARRISON — When residents look over Harrison town meeting warrant articles asking for X-dollars to be appropriated for various departments and services, they will find no recommendation from the Select Board. There will be a simple notation, “Select Board recommendation, none.”
The issue regarding “recommendation” was raised by Selectman Phil Devlin, who sent an e-mail concerning the matter to Board Chairman Ray Laplante prior to last Thursday’s Select Board meeting. The question was sent to legal counsel, and Attorney Jessica Maher attended the board’s meeting to offer clarification and possible recourse.
By Dawn De Busk Staff Writer CASCO — Twelve-yearold Meghan Case appreciates the resources around her like the Planet Earth and the Casco Village Library. Her Silver Award for Girl Scouts encompasses both those things. Her plan helps people reduce using plastic bags by giving out free, recyclable book bags to library patrons. Each time a person picks out a book bag, he or she signs a plastic-free pledge. By the way, the book bags are homemade.
explained. “My solution: to make however many cloth bags to help replace the plastic bags so that people can use their own bags to pick up books,” she said. “It was pretty much that I would try to eliminate the amount of plastic bags that are being used in Casco, through the library.” Patrons of the library can get a bookbag for free as long as they sign the Earth Day pledge. The pledge says: “I will help in the effort to eliminate the use of plastic bags in the Casco Library for at least one year.”
Reap What You Sew Meghan Case taught herself how to sew by watching an online instructional video. “I have taken a couple classes. It was an online sewing class. So I had sewed BAG, Page 3A
Girl Scout has Silver Award in the bag Already, Case has sewn 80 bookbags using donated fabric. Case asked a local quilting group to sew another 80 bags, which have been completed. Case still has another 40 to sew. That’s a total of 200 bookbags. A resident of Casco, Case belongs to Girl Scout Troop #587, which is a mix of Juniors and Cadettes. Any girl who decides to earn a Silver Award must submit paperwork, and must have the project approved by the Girl Scouts of Maine. Then, the girl must document all the hours that she works.
Also, any girl earning the award must select a mentor. Longtime scout Dana Pyr stepped in as Case’s mentor. Case explained what inspired her to choose this particular cause for her Silver Award. “During the pandemic, the library made a pickup window and they were passing the books to people in line. I have seen a plastic bag break right in the middle of taking it to someone’s car. And then, they would forget to pick up the bag and the bag would pretty much blow off with the wind,” she
Attorney Maher reviewed state statute and found that with any appropriation, the Select Board must indicate whether they recommend it. “If you haven’t discussed that and voted on whether you recommend it, by default, you are not recommending it. At this point, you could decide to go through it (the warrant) and make recommendations, or if you don’t do that, it would be notated ‘recommendation, none.’ I think those are the two options, as we sit here now,” Maher said. Devlin suggested using “none,” and made a motion to include in the warrant “Select Board recommendation, none.” Attorney Maher clarified to the board that while they ARTICLES, Page 4A
