If you are new to the JCC, welcome. If you have been here for a few years or perhaps many, we are glad you are here and thank you for being a part of our JCC! I feel privileged to have been a part of this JCC for the past 13 years, even more so taking over the position of Executive Director. The JCC has been, and I am happy to say continues to be, an inspiration for everyone in our community. I am so proud of all the work that every single staff member does for our incredible J. Working here is more than a job to each of us, and you can see the results of how they feel in the way that we serve you and our entire community. We hope you feel the warmth of our welcome in every JCC experience. The JCC offers ways to keep yourself healthy -- physically, mentally and spiritually. Stimulate your mind with any one of the classes offered through Jewish LIFE or our adult department. Invigorate your body with Yoga, Pilates, or any of our 60 fitness classes offered each week. Enjoy a film, lecture or day trip. Encourage your child’s growth with preschool, our summer camp, our afterschool program, or an exciting class or a program. Motivate your teen to become involved in our many volunteer or job opportunities, in a fitness program or perhaps join our teen trip to Israel this summer. I encourage you to take advantage of all that the JCC has to offer by making your J a central part of your lives. I believe that the Center is uniquely positioned to broadly engage our community because we are in the unique position to be able to bring our entire Jewish community together. There are no dividers here at the JCC. We are pluralistic, intergenerational and non-ideological – welcoming and inclusive to all. If you believe in creating the type of Center that we believe in, I am asking for your help to make it happen. It is impossible to sustain a Center for Jewish life by relying solely on the membership dues and program fees of those who happen to be participating at any particular time. Without your support, it is impossible for us to welcome and include everyone in our community who wants to participate but cannot afford to. If you are not a member, become one – we offer many membership options – and participate as a member of our community. Please contact our membership department at spollak@ ssbjcc.org. If you are already a member, please consider making a financial contribution to help us continue to offer a wide variety of quality programs, and provide assistance to those who otherwise cannot afford to participate. Gifts may be made online, or feel free to contact me directly at lfriedman@ssbjcc.org. Thank you in advance for your generosity. During the past 13 years, we have accomplished more than anyone could have ever imagined. Our achievements clearly are not the result of any one person, but rather the product of many individuals pulling together for common goals. We are so fortunate to have incredibly dedicated lay leaders, dynamic and passionate professional staff and volunteers that make this JCC a very special place. I want to thank every JCC member for letting us become a part of your family and being your home away from home. I am confident that we will continue to make a difference in people’s lives every day! Wishing you and your family a Happy & Healthy 2013!

Volunteers Needed! Contact Paige x207 What is Purim? Purim, which literally means “lots,” is the holiday in which Jews commemorate being saved from persecution in the ancient Persian Empire. According to the Book of Esther in the Bible, the Jews of the city of Shushan were threatened by the villain Haman, a prime minister who convinces King Ahasuerus to kill all the Jews (because the Jewish Mordecai refused to bow down to Haman). Haman casts lots (hence the name of the holiday) to determine the date he would carry out his plan: the 13th of Adar. In the end, the Jews are saved by the heroic Queen Esther, Mordecai’s niece (and adopted daughter), who married Ahasuerus (after he banished his first, rebellious wife Vashti). When Ahasuerus discovers that his wife Esther is Jewish, he decides to reverse Haman’s decree, and instead of the Jews being killed, Haman, his sons, and other enemies are killed instead.

How is Purim celebrated? Purim is the most raucous holiday on the Jewish calendar (which involves drinking). Observance of the holiday begins with dressing up in costume: some people choose to dress as characters from the Purim story, and others dress in non-Purim-related costumes. It is a mitzvah (commandment) to listen to the story of Purim chanted from Megillat Esther (“The Scroll of Esther”) and to hear every word. It is customary to make loud noise with a noisemaker called a ra’ashan in Hebrew, or grager in Yiddish, every time Haman’s name is mentioned, in order to fulfill the obligation of blotting out Haman’s name. Part of the holiday also includes giving gifts or charity to the poor, called matanot l’evyonim. A fun tradition on the holiday is to perform a Purim spiel, a satirical show either dramatizing the Purim story in a humorous way, or just a funny skit on any theme.

ADULTS Jewish LIFE

February Reuven Firestone Holy War in JudaismThe Fall and Rise of a Controversial Idea Tuesday, February 12 7:00pm Hosted by the JCC Holy War in Judaism is the first book to consider how the concept of “ holy war” disappeared from Jewish thought for almost 2000 years, only to reemerge with renewed vigor in modern times. In this book Rueven Firestone identifies, analyzes and explains the historical, conceptual and the intellectual processes that revived holy war ideas in modern Judaism. The book serves as a case study of the way in which one ancient religious concept once deemed irrelevant or even dangerous was successfully revivied in order to fill a pressing contemporary need. It also helps to clarify the current political and religious situation in Israel and the Middle East. Reuven Firestone is Professor of Medieval Judaism and Islam at Hebrew Union College and Senior Fellow at the Center for Religious and Civic Culture at the University of Southern California.

Robert Rosenthal From Plagues to Miracle Thursday, March 7 • 7:00 PM Hosted by JCC

In From Plagues to Miracles, psychiatrist Robert Rosenthal takes a fresh and bold new look at the story of Exodus in which the figures of Moses and Pharaoh represent dueling aspects of the human mind. Pharaoh is the egomind: arrogant, capricious, and cut off from God and Spirit. Moses represents the part of the mind that is and has always been in full, direct connection with God. And the Hebrews represent us—all of us, regardless of religious affiliation. If you’ve always felt that there must be more to the Old Testament, but could never sift the spiritual wheat from the thou-shalt-not chaff, then this discussion is for you.

Aquatots II

If you are unsure of a child’s level, you can bring your swimmer in to be tested or contact the Aquatics Director for questions. An in-person evaluation will ensure that your child will be in the correct class. It only takes a few minutes for an instructor to evaluate a swimmer’s level. Call the Aquatics office for more information or to schedule an appointment to start your swimmer off with the correct class this session.

Ages 18 months to 3 years old

Observation of Lessons

For those little swimmers who are already comfortable in the water! Songs and activities help infants and toddlers further gain confidence and practice their budding basic swimming skills. Starfish skills are introduced and children begin to work more with the instructor to get prepared to move to the next level of swimming and rely less on Mommy and Daddy’s help. A swim diaper and rubber pants are required under a child’s swimsuit.

While we recognize that parents are as thrilled about the progress of their children as the students are, we respectfully ask that parents remain seated on the 6 foot side of the pool bleachers for the duration of your child’s lesson. Unless specified (such as a parent/child swim class) parents are not permitted in the water with their children as this is a distraction to the group as a whole. Thank you for your cooperation.

Group swim classes at the Bridgewater JCC enjoy a limited four student to one instructor ratio. Because of this ratio classes fill up quickly leaving not much option for a make-up class. In order to be considered for a make up class, a doctor’s note must be given to the Aquatics Office. The Aquatics Department cannot guarantee that a makeup class will be available, however every effort will be made to accommodate the need of the individual and that there is space in the class desired.

A Highlight on K'Ton at Camp Ruach

These are the smallest of our Camp Ruach campers. Their ages range from 2 to 5 years old. The K’ton campers receive a variety of ageappropriate programs and activities. Their day includes indoor and outdoor camp time. We offer various naptime options and welcome non-potty trained children. The K’ton Unit Head leads an amazing staff of highly trained adults and assistants. Many of them work year round in our preschool. We hope that you will want to make JCC Camp Ruach your child’s “HOME FOR THE SUMMER”.

GENERAL INFORMATION JCC Fundraising Efforts The JCC sponsors a host of fundraising events throughout the year that benefit The JCC Scholarship Fund. We ask you to support the Scholarship Fund by purchasing a Big Raffle ticket, sponsor a tee at the Golf Outing, sponsor a table at our Texas Hold’em and/ or place an ad in our Journal. Some of you unfamiliar with the Scholarship Fund may ask… “What is the JCC Scholarship Fund? How does it help the community? And… why should I contribute?” We would like to take this opportunity to tell you about the JCC Scholarship Fund and how it helps our members and our community. Part of the JCC’s mission is to provide programs and services regardless of someone’s ability to pay. We have a process whereby individuals or families experiencing financial difficulties can apply to the JCC for financial assistance for preschool, camp or membership. Over the past thirteen years we have given out over one million dollars in scholarship assistance to individuals and families in need so that they can participate in activities, attend the Blaustein Early Childhood Center and JCC Camp Ruach. The JCC Camp and Preschool Scholarship Program makes it possible for youngsters to participate in JCC activities that they could not otherwise afford. Funds also support services to seniors including a hot lunch, exercise, entertainment and socialization. Scholarship assistance is provided to all who demonstrate financial need, regardless of race, creed, or color. We hope this provides you with a better understanding of the important role the JCC Scholarship Fund plays in our community, and how simply purchasing a Raffle Ticket can help us fulfill our mission. If you have any questions or would like to make a donation to the JCC Scholarship Fund, please contact Laura Friedman, JCC Executive Director at 908-7256994 x213; LFriedman@ssbjcc.org or mail a check to the “JCC”.

Thank you in advance for your support of the JCC Scholarship Fund.

Benefactor Program For a donation of $500/year, you will have the opportunity to be on our Honor Roll of Supporters as a Benefactor. This will entitle you to one reserved locker, a place on our Benefactors Honor Roll outside the locker room area, a complimentary Personal Training Session and a few additional gifts. The Benefactor donation is renewable on a yearly basis. Please consider doing this for both the Jewish community and yourself. Your donation is so very important for the continuity of programming and services that deeply affect each of us.

Tribute Cards Support the JCC… To Honor and Remember Your Family, Friends and Life Events. Tribute Cards are a meaningful way to honor or memorialize loved ones or recognize a milestone or special occasion. Funds generated help support the important programs and services the JCC provides to our community. All gifts are tax deductible and greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.
