The Encanto Collection

ENCANTO tells a colorful story of technical innovation in the service of beautiful and purposeful design, bringing to market something that literally had never been done before.

What to Expect

We’re barely into the new year and a full market season has already come and gone. Though time has flown by, we’ve already learned quite a bit about what to expect in 2025. After conducting our annual Gift Book Consumer Survey last fall, perusing product introductions at winter markets, and keeping up with what’s going on in the news, we’ve made a few predictions about consumer habits and what will be trending this year.

Looking at the big picture, consumers will be cautious with their dollars since the cost of goods is still rising and there are plenty of unknowns about the 2025 economy, especially with the talk of trade war that ignited in early February. Be sure to stock plenty of approachable price points to appeal to budget-conscious consumers who are worried over increased tariffs and price hikes. Reusable items or those with a double function will also appeal to shoppers this year for the same budgetary concerns.

“Be sure to stock plenty of approachable price points to appeal to budgetconscious consumers who are worried over increased tariffs and price hikes.”

You’ll also want to keep self-care products on hand, particularly science-backed skincare, luxurious bath and body items and anything that aids sleep wellness. Times are uncertain right now and customers will be looking for ways to unplug, reduce anxiety and take care of themselves. Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, are reprioritizing their lives for better work-life balance and putting their health and wellness first. Stock these items if you have a younger consumer base.

Other trends you’ll want to keep an eye on this year include colorful glassware and fused glass goods, items and apparel with crocheted elements, and over-the-top jewelry and other home goods that scream “more is more.” If you haven’t thought about adding a charm bar for shoppers to make their own personalized bracelet or necklace, you might want to add one this year. Not only are the accessories trending, but they make for a great in-store experience that’ll engage your customers and keep them coming back — with friends in tow.

For more details on trends we spotted during the winter markets, check out this issue's lead retail feature, which outlines four top trends we saw in Atlanta and Dallas.

Keep an eye out for creative toys and products for kids, too, if it makes sense for your brand and customer base. Parents and grandparents will usually find a few dollars for kiddos, even if things are tight, since the purchases are more emotional. Adults — or kidults — are still buying toys and games, too, as they seek out ways to de-stress. You can find several cool, new products for kids in this month’s lead Trending Gifts feature.

While there are plenty of questions circulating about how 2025 will fare, one thing is for certain: Consumers will always find a reason to shop. You just have to appeal to them with both what they need and what they’ve never seen before.

It’s Time to Enter the 74th Annual Retailer Excellence Awards

Hosted annually, Gifts & Decorative Accessories' Retailer Excellence Awards (REA) recognizes retail excellence in seven award categories, as well as five Regional Sales Representatives of the Year and the Manufacturer of the Year. The awards program and summer gala is the most longstanding and prestigious awards program for independent retailers in the gift and home industry, and the magazine is currently taking submissions from independent retailers.

Enter the Retail Awards

Retailers can enter themselves into one or more categories by completing the retail award form, found at retailerexcellenceawards.com, for each category they want to enter. Examples should be from the last award year (March 2024-March 2025).

Third parties may also enter a retailer into the awards by filling out the form on their behalf, but must provide the store owner’s name, email and phone number at the beginning of the entry description and must alert the store owner of the nomination so they can expect a giftsanddec.com email should they be named a finalist.

The deadline to enter is March 31, 2025.

The seven retail categories are:

• Social Media Outreach and Online Initiatives: Recognizes an engaging website or website redesign, successful social channel, email campaign or other digital-savvy retail tactic.

• Store Design/Redesign: Recognizes overall store design creativity and strategy, or store design overhaul.

• Visual Merchandising: Recognizes creative window and product displays.

• Store Events: Recognizes a successful store event or list of events.

• Best Specialty Store: This award is more all-encompassing and recognizes best overall specialty store.

• Multiple Locations: This award is more all-encompassing and recognizes best overall store with

multiple locations.

• Socially Responsible: Recognizes charitable work, community engagement and/or environmentally friendly initiatives.

Nominate a Sales Rep or Manufacturer

Retailers may also nominate a favorite sales representative or manufacturer that they do business with. To nominate a worthy sales rep, fill out the sales rep nomination form, and be sure to give specific examples of how that sales rep has gone above and beyond the call of duty and helped your business thrive. Deadline to nominate a sales rep is March 31, 2025.

To nominate a vendor for Manufacturer of the Year, fill out the Manufacturer of the Year nomination form, and, again, be sure to provide details on why you think that manufacturer deserves to be named the best of 2025. After March 31, GDA editors will compile and tally the number of nominations for each manufacturer and narrow the list down to the top 10. Retailers will then be notified to vote for their favorite out of the final 10.

Find all REA entry forms at retailerexcellenceawards.com.

Attend the Gala

Nominees will be celebrated at a gala event Wed., June 18, at Dallas Union Station Grand Hall, 400 S. Houston St., Dallas, Texas. The event runs during the week of Dallas Market Center's summer Total Home and Gift Market. The gala will include a networking cocktail hour with open bar, strolling dinner catered by Wolfgang Puck, and a seated awards ceremony in which winners will be announced. Dress code is cocktail attire.

Home Accents Today will also present its winner for Best Home Decor Store, and Gift for Life (GFL), a charitable organization made up of gift industry volunteers, will present its Industry Achievement Award during the ceremony. GDA asks participants to please donate to Gift for Life’s cause of ending world hunger.

Visit retailerexcellenceawards.com for more information on the gala, to purchase tickets and enter the awards.

Schauben & Co Debuts Modern Website

Gearing up for 2025, Schauben & Co has rebuilt its website to enhance the digital experience for its customers. The new website, which features improved navigation and streamlined product updates, was completed Dec. 19, just in time for the winter buying season.

“Our team worked hard to create a site that’s not just modern but really userfriendly.”

“We’re so excited about the new schaubenco.com," said Peter Schauben of Schauben & Co. "Our team worked hard to create a site that’s not just modern but really user-friendly — everything our customers deserve when they shop with us.”

— Peter Schauben, Schauben & Co

The new website, schaubenco.com, is built on the Optimizely e-commerce platform, designed to enhance user experience. It features improved navigation, making it easier for users to explore brands and products. Additionally, backend processes, like product updates, have been streamlined to ensure customers always see the latest information. Finally, the Optimizely platform gives the sales rep group the ability to upgrade and enhance the user experience with new tools and features.

The redesign process took about 10 weeks to complete, including the planning, development, testing and deployment to ensure a smooth transition for users.

"We're excited to extend this enhanced platform to our customers for another way to shop,” Schauben & Co said in a press statement.

In addition to the new website, Schauben & Co showcased several new and exciting brands in January in its Atlanta Market showroom, including Caldrea, Capucine De Wulf, Colonial Candle, Conscious Ink, El Arroyo, Marlyn Schiff Jewelry and Oars + Alps.

CMA Freshens Up Online Experience

In addition to sporting an expanded, redesigned Las Vegas showroom this year, CMA has also redesigned its website to both reflect its new branding and create a more optimal shopping experience for its customers.

“Our new website goes beyond being a shopping destination — it’s an all-in-one toolkit for retailers,” said Emalee Hoffman, VP of sales for CMA.

“Our new website goes beyond being a shopping destination — it’s an all-inone toolkit for retailers.”

— Emalee Hoffman, VP of sales for CMA

“Exciting new tools, such as the ‘Find a Rep’ feature and a dedicated retailer dashboard, help retailers connect directly with their local representatives and access valuable resources to support their business needs.”

The new website, cmagifts.com, has been completely redesigned on the Optimizely e-commerce platform to deliver an enhanced user experience. It now features improved navigation, making it easier for users to browse brands and products effortlessly. Behind the scenes, processes like product updates have been streamlined to ensure customers can always access the latest information.

The new site also reflects CMA’s rebrand.

“The recent rebrand of CMA focuses on reenergizing the brand’s visual identity,” CMA said in a statement to the press. “With a streamlined logo, vibrant color scheme and a more contemporary look, the refreshed branding aims to communicate the CMA’s commitment to quality, innovation, and a deep understanding of the market.

“The rebrand positions the agency as a forward-thinking partner for retailers and brands, while still honoring its longstanding reputation for exceptional service and expertise in the home and gift sector. The refreshed identity speaks to CMA’s mission of providing unique, curated products with a personal touch, while also energizing its presence in the market.”

The new website officially launched Dec. 17 and it took about 10 weeks to complete the entire redesign process.

“We’re beyond excited to launch the brand-new CMA website,” Hoffman added.

“It’s designed to be a vibrant, user-friendly hub that offers a fresh, dynamic experience for our customers. With a reenergized look and enhanced features, navigating the site is now faster and more intuitive than ever.

"This exciting update not only reflects our commitment to innovation but also celebrates our new branding, which perfectly captures the energy and forward-thinking vision of CMA. We can’t wait for everyone to explore and enjoy all that our new site has to offer!”

Inspired Home Show Moves to Midweek Schedule for 2026

Changes are coming to the schedule for the Inspired Home Show with what the International Housewares Association (IHA) President and CEO Derek Miller is calling a “key strategic shift.”

Beginning in 2026, the Inspired Home Show is shifting to a midweek pattern instead of a weekend pattern to better accommodate attendees' schedules, according to a special

Next year, the show will open on Tuesday, March 10 and close on

“This decision was made after polling the industry and having conversations with many key constituents to determine the most desirable day pattern,” Miller said in the announcement. “It was clear that there has been a shift in our culture and workforce that directly impacts when we must come to market.

“The evolution to the Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday pattern best positions the show to meet the changing industry’s evolving needs and expectations.”

The dates with the new midweek pattern are set through 2028, with the show planned for March 9-11, 2027, and March 7-9, 2028. Miller said the IHA board will meet in May to discuss and make “further strategic planning decisions” based on the industry’s

This is not the first time the IHA has made changes to the Inspired Home Show after polling buyers and exhibitors both at and after markets. After the 2023 edition, the decision was made to shorten the show to just three days. In 2024, a new advanced registration process was introduced, allowing exhibitors to register as early as February 2024 — a move that will help make for a more efficient process for planning.

New for 2025 will be the addition of the Travel Gear + Luggage Expo, along with two new pavilions: the Candle Pavilion in partnership with the National Candle Association and the Pet Products Pavilion in partnership with American Pet Products Association. The 2025 show will run March 2-4 at McCormick Place in Chicago.

Pinterest Releases Its Own

‘Palette’ for 2025

Pinterest has mined its data to determine its 2025 Pinterest Palette with five colors for the year predicted from what users are doing on the site.

“The Pinterest Palette is inspired entirely by Pinners — what they’re searching, saving and shopping for on our platform,” said Xanthe Wells, Pinterest's vice president of global creative. “We invite people to use the palette to inspire mood boards, shot lists, merchandising assortments — even product development ideas.”

Pinterest uses its data-backed trendspotting methodology and visual search technology to spot what it thinks will be big in the year ahead in its annual trend report.

From there, Wells said the company zeroed in on search terms that sparked colorful conversations, such as “cherry red fashion” and “soft yellow aesthetics.” The company then mapped the emerging trends and color clusters against firstparty platform data.

“By looking at actions like saves, we were able to see which colors were driving engagement over time,” Wells added.

The five colors predicted to be big this year include the following:

• Cherry Red: A statement-maker inspired by bold beauty looks, vibrant fashion, and standout décor.

• Butter Yellow: Playful and warm, this pastel hue is perfect for everything from whimsical table settings to sunny accent walls.

• Aura Indigo: Lilac with an edge — moody, magical and made for cosmic-inspired beauty and dreamy interiors.

• Alpine Oat: A cozy-chic neutral, designed for textured layers, minimalistic style, and those perfectly poured latte moments.

• Dill Green: Fresh, tangy and trendy, it’s the perfect color for kitchens, cocktails and cool wardrobes. The official 2025 Pinterest Palette comes after Pinterest released its annual Pinterest Predicts trend report, where it named multiple up-and-coming aesthetics as trends to watch based on data surrounding relevant search terms. Emerging trends included “cherry coded,” “castlecore” and “dolled up.”

Priorities 2 Rebrands, Joins the Next Step Family

Manufacturers rep agency Priorities 2 is joining the Next Step rep agency family and rebranding as Next Step Midwest. As part of the move, Robin Risvold, founder of Priorities 2, will join the Next Step team alongside Jackie Moon and Andrea McEvoy.

Founded 22 years ago by Risvold as a full-service rep agency covering the states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, Priorities 2 has “built a reputation for excellence in retail representation,” according to a release from Next Step.

“Robin's vision for the agency was born out of her deep passion for retail — spanning placement, education, merchandising and cultivating long-lasting relationships,” wrote Next Step in its announcement. “This commitment to excellence and innovation aligns seamlessly with Next Step’s mission to provide premier representation and unparalleled value for vendors and retailers.”

The merger with Priorities 2 marks a significant milestone for Next Step, extending its territory to include 21 states nationwide.

“We are thrilled about the opportunities this expansion

unlocks, paving the way for growth, innovation and new possibilities,” added McEvoy, co-founder of Next Step. “Robin Risvold and her team have built a legacy of expertise and trust in the Midwest. By joining forces, we are strengthening our ability to serve vendors and retailers with broader reach, enhanced resources and an even greater commitment to excellence.”

In addition to expanding its reach, Next Step is excited to offer “enhanced opportunities to vendors and retailers in the Midwest." This includes expanded marketing capabilities, key account access, showroom support and tailored resources for growth. Adding to this expansion, Next Step Midwest will be holding a grand opening for its new, permanent showroom at the Minneapolis Mart during the event’s March 7-11 spring show.

Next Step is a division of Diverse Companies, which acquired Priorities 2 and Next Step in 2023. It provides service in categories such as home décor, gifts, lifestyle, jewelry, accessories, apparel, garden, gourmet and entertainment, bath and body, and custom.

end of Red Sea Shipping Crisis Could Bring ‘Collapse’ in Container Rates

A shipping crisis in the Red Sea could be ending after Houthi militants said they would stop attacking most Western ships, provided that the Gaza ceasefire is fully implemented. Militants instead said they’d limit their attacks to Israeli vessels only.

“Vessels wholly owned by Israeli individuals or entities and/or sailing under the Israeli flag will remain prohibited from transiting the Red Sea, Bab-el-Mandeb, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean at present,” said the Humanitarian Operations Coordination Center, which serves as liaison between Houthis and carriers. Houthis will resume attacks “in the event of any aggression against Yemen by the U.S., the U.K. or the usurping Israeli entity.”

In early 2024, Yemen’s Houthi rebel group began attacking container ships traveling through the Suez Canal in retaliation on Israel and Israel’s Western allies for the Israel-Hamas conflict. Ocean carriers began diverting ships in response, directing travel around the horn of Africa through the Cape of Good Hope. This added around 14 extra days to a ship’s journey and was one reason container rates would spike over the ensuing months.

Ocean carriers have not announced an immediate return. But when they do, there could be disruptions.

“Global ocean carriers have announced they are still monitoring the situation and will return to Red Sea routes only when it is deemed safe,” said Rachel Shames, vice president of procurement for CV International, in a blog post.

Peter Sand, analyst at freight intelligence platform Xeneta, anticipates “chaos” in the coming weeks. He also thinks container rates could “collapse.”

“There will be severe disruption in the immediate period following a return of ships to the Red Sea,” he said in a blog post. “Ships will not be where they are supposed to be and will arrive at ports much earlier (or later) than scheduled. If large numbers of ships arrive at ports at the same time, it will cause massive delays and congestion that ripple across ocean supply chains.

“Scrapping of ships will increase and carriers have got much better at capacity management in recent years, but it is unlikely this will be enough to prevent freight rates from collapsing.”

At J&B Home Décor & Gifts, owner Brad Priest takes celebrating life every day very seriously. Priest, who opened his Indiana store in September 2022, has turned the store into a home for both those everyday revelers and the supplies they need to turn the average day into something special.

“ “Show your client exactly how it should be used or displayed. That is why they come to a specialty home décor and gift boutique, to feel inspired by our creativity.”

J&B Home Décor & Gifts

At J&B Home Décor & Gifts, owner Brad Priest takes celebrating life every day very seriously inside his 1,700-square-foot Elkhart, Ind., store.

“I encourage everyone to celebrate every day with their favorite drink or their favorite music, no matter what they are doing,” said Priest. “I always tell people, ‘Wear the good shoes!’ Don’t wait.”

Priest, who opened his store’s doors in September 2022, has turned his store into a home for both those everyday revelers and the supplies they need to turn the average day into something special. At his store — which offers an assortment of home décor, accent furniture, gourmet treats, and an expanding array of gift items including jewelry, candles and more — customers can find Priest working alongside the store’s official mascot, his Australian cattle dog, Miss Piper, with his favorite music going. In-store for his customers, he aims to deliver the kind of detailed and personalized customer service he remembers watching people like his mother receive at stores when he was a kid.

“When you would buy something then, it was an event, and the salespeople made it feel so special,” Priest explained. “And they would give thoughtful suggestions on what else to buy and pair it with and get to know you.”

Priest, who’s originally from Milwaukee, has not always been in retail despite his early love for it. After moving to Chicago at the age of 16, he embarked on a 20-year career as a singer and dancer. In 2000, he met his husband Jonathan Tuff, and in 2008, the duo — who would be married in 2016 — jumped into the interior design business together, buying a local business, Garber’s Interior Decorating, alongside Tuff’s sister, Cynthia. Together — despite not being part of the original Garber family — Priest and Tuff became known collectively as “the Garber Boys” and made a name for themselves in the industry both for their work and their fun-loving personalities.

Unfortunately, everything changed for Priest in March 2021 when Tuff unexpectedly died, leading to the closing of Garber’s Interior Design in April 2022. But, despite the hardships, Priest didn't want he and Tuff’s story to end there.

“Life has definitely been a challenge after losing my husband and the other half of the Garber Boys,” he said in an earlier interview with Gifts & Decorative Accessories’ sister brand Home Accents Today. “Jonathan and I had always had the dream of opening a smaller, more intimate home décor and gift shop, something that the two of us could handle as we progressed into our senior years.”

So, that is exactly what Priest did in September 2023, opening J&B Home Décor & Gifts to the public with “Jonathan in [his] heart.” He even named the store in memory of Tuff and their time together, with the “J” in J&B standing for Jonathan and the “B” standing for Brad.

Since opening the store, Priest said he has been most touched by the community support he has received, and most surprised by the online community that has picked up around his Facebook Live weekend morning show, which he has dubbed “Live with Brad.” The show, which can last from 20 minutes to an hour, gets hundreds of views and comments, and has even gotten Priest invited on local radio shows to co-host. During the Live, Priest makes a point to interact with watchers as he discusses the store, new arrivals, home décor trends, life and more. Priest’s goal with Live is just to connect, he said.

“Show your client exactly how it should be used or displayed,” added Priest. “That is why they come to a specialty home décor and gift boutique, to feel inspired by our creativity.”

Top Trends From Market

From colorful glassware to positive and expressive jewelry, new introductions at market point to consumers looking to the brighter side of things.

This past winter market season had quite the buzz, from the Total Home & Gift Market in Dallas expanding and reimagining its Temps and battling inclement winter weather to Atlanta Market seeing some of its best traffic since the pandemic and Las Vegas Market regaining legacy exhibitors.

There was plenty of show news to discuss, including lots of new product introductions and trends for 2025.

Of note were the amount of spiritually uplifting gifts and jewelry pieces, as well as fun and colorful glassware for the home. It seems that manufacturers are banking on customers wanting more joy and positivity in their lives this year, and we think they’ve made the right bet. With so much uncertainty about the economy, price hikes, natural disasters and negative headlines, shoppers in gift and home boutiques will definitely be looking for things that brighten their day or spread positivity and kindness.

With that said, there were plenty of other fun trends we noticed during the winter markets. Here we’ve rounded up examples from four of the key ones we spotted — fused glass, expressive jewelry, bejeweled goods and savory candles — all of which offer something positive, colorful or unique for the 2025 shopper.

Libarius in Tigard, Ore., uses expensive-looking thrift items to stand out against the displays of chocolate. “Amor Vincit Omnia” is a Latin phrase that means "love conquers all" and is a conversation starter.

SELLING SWEETS IS SWEET

I must admit, I’m addicted to chocolate but happily, I’m in good company. According to a study from Statista, U.S. consumers eat about 2.56 billion pounds of chocolate a year.

The study says women eat chocolate 2.5 times per week, while men eat it 1.8 times a week. Whatever the rates, it’s safe to say many consumers love chocolate and carrying it in your store is smart and logical. While researching statistics for this column, I raided the kitchen and there was (rapidly disappearing) dark chocolate on my desk.

Recently I discovered temptation locally in a beautifully (and very affordably) designed chocolate store 10 minutes from my home in Tigard, Ore. With the desire for better educational and job opportunities for their children, Olga Moisseyeva and her husband moved to Oregon from Ukraine at the end of 2019 right before the COVID-19 pandemic. After graduating from the Professional Chocolatier Program at Ecole Chocolat in Vancouver, Canada, and finishing some private classes from Belgian, Dutch and Swedish chocolatiers, Moisseyeva opened a chocolate shop of her own just last year called Libarius. I discovered it thanks to a simple, well-designed A-frame sign on the sidewalk. Never underestimate the power of an A-frame sign!

The outdoor signage above her store was stylish, the window display was fun and I was intrigued. When I walked in, I was wowed! Moisseyeva created an elegant shop with innate good

taste, in-store design and display. What I noticed first were the small, framed photos hung all over the focal wall behind the chocolate cases. When I got closer, these photos blew my mind and made me smile. They were fabulously weird and clever. As I turned to my left, I saw a huge wall graphic covering the entire wall that corresponded with the small photos. I’m a major fan of wall murals and this one was a brave and inspired design touch that made a very small store feel fun, chic and unique.

The floor fixtures are painted black and disappear with the LED lights trained on the chocolates within. The use of wood and brass fixtures adds a feeling of quality and permanence. All the fixtures and props were sourced at estate sales and thrift shops — and some were found at the end of driveways with a “free” sign. All were thoroughly cleaned and refurbished. Moisseyeva put her money into renovating the space by replastering the walls and ceiling, adding good lighting, a fresh LPV floor and signage. My friends and family received beautifully boxed and bagged goodies from Libarius this past holiday season.

You don’t have to spend a lot to create a gourmet chocolate area. Stick with a neutral color theme and allow the fixtures to disappear. Aim lights on the inside of the cases. Make sure to use LEDs which don’t throw any heat. Engage and encourage the sweet tooth in your customers. It will pay off for you — and possibly their dentists.

Sometimes going big makes sense, especially with this wallpaper mural that adds sophistication and surprise to an otherwise black and white shop. Taking a design leap of faith can pay off, and does so in this case, by reflecting the sophisticated European flavor of the shop.

This exuberant window caught my eye as I was driving past the small shopping area of Main Street in Tigard, Ore. As the shop and window are perpendicular to the street, they can only be seen when driving north on Main Street. That’s why their A-frame sign was — and is — so vital to their visibility. Yellow is the first color seen by our eyes — it says “stop and think” plus it creates serotonin in our brains, much like chocolate! This window cost little to do but has a huge impact in attracting customers to the newly-opened shop.

Libarius owner Olga Moisseyeva changes her windows seasonally, and for special holidays like Valentine's Day and Mother’s Day. She recently had “Chocolate Shop” added to the window as the name Libarius, while interesting, didn’t give a clear message to drivers-by.

This wood unit was found locally, freshened up and now acts as the focal point of the far-right wall. It houses imported and local gourmet chocolates, teas, jams and jellies, along with other gift items. The black wall suggests that everything on it is important and sophisticated. This photo was taken right after Christmas and is a bit “sold down” yet still feels full and appealing.

All the trays match — a very important design element that allows people to focus on the products instead of the fixtures. Also, note the charming snowflake decals for the holiday and winter seasons. Taste testing is a proven winner and locally made macarons are featured on the top/center of the fixtures.

TARIFF TALK: WHAT ARE YOUR CONCERNS?

After weeks of threatening action before and after he took office, President Donald Trump followed through with his promises to impose tariffs on at least three countries — Mexico, Canada and China. In late January, Trump declared an economic emergency to place duties of 10 percent on all imports from China and 25 percent on imports from Mexico and Canada starting on Feb. 4. Energy imported from Canada — including oil, natural gas and electricity — would be taxed at 10 percent.

Though the tariffs on Mexico and Canada were temporarily paused for 30 days at the time this issue went to print, the talk of tariffs and subsequent trade war has many businesses and consumers alike worried about the cost of goods and what the tariffs might mean for the U.S. economy.

In fact, the National Retail Federation quickly issued a response. “We support the Trump administration’s goal of strengthening trade relationships and creating fair and favorable terms for America,” said David French, the National Retail Federation’s executive vice president of government relations. “But imposing steep tariffs on three of our closest trading partners is a serious step.”

The tariffs, should they hold, will be felt across the U.S. and dip into a number of markets, including plastics and textiles from China, oil and lumber from Canada, and clothing, produce

and liquor from Mexico, and the order contained no exceptions for U.S. importers. The initial news sparked retaliatory tariffs from impacted countries and a mixed bag of reactions from businesses and consumers alike. Many retailers — in the U.S. and in Canada — are rightfully concerned about potential impacts on their business, while some are celebrating the chance to uplift their American-made product. We touched base with a few retailers from across North America to ask if they were worried about the tariffs and to find out more specifically what in their stores might be impacted by the changes.

“Everyone should be concerned. Your physical item may not come from any of these countries, but oftentimes the ingredients to make them do. Everything will cost us more and have to be passed on to our customers, when they are already strapped for money.

“Discretionary spending will become even tighter than it already is. The guy who makes our line of spices for our store said he will have to close. Sauces and rubs already have such a close margin for him and no spices are made/grown in the U.S. that he uses — think about that. Raw ingredients for many products are imported, even if the product is made in the U.S. This will close many small businesses and the only ones who will be able to survive this insanity will be the big box stores.”

“Yes. On the other side of the issue, I own a gift and clothing store in Canada. Many items come from companies in the U.S. but are made elsewhere. Now people are saying ‘buy Canadian only.’ Totally get it, but my store is full of non-Canadian made because that is what they wanted last week.”

“Not really. We’ve been through it the first time he [Donald Trump] was in office and some of my supporters are now making things in the U.S. instead of China, so this time around it will not affect them, so no worries. I will be spending more with them and dropping companies that are out of country.”

Joanna Bronowicka

Well Bred Chester, N.J.

“I’m not that concerned. We have some foods from Canada, nothing I’m aware of from Mexico, and toys and accessories from China — I wish they were U.S. made. But most of our foods are made from U.S. ingredients. We actually see strong signs of the economy improving in our business. Our January was very good.”

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS

Out of all the things thrown at the gift and home industry — the pandemic, the housing slowdown, inflation, astronomical shipping rates and just plain fatigue over the divisive status of our country and the world the one that may have the longest-lasting impact is the emergence of Shein and Temu as disrupters to the business status quo.

It’s Time to Learn From Shein, Temu

Out of all the things thrown at the gift and home industry — the pandemic, the housing slowdown, inflation, astronomical shipping rates and just plain fatigue over the divisive status of our country and the world — the one that may have the longest-lasting impact is the emergence of Shein and Temu as disrupters to the business status quo.

The two Chinese-origin e-commerce sites have certainly had their impact on the industry, with hundreds of millions — billions in fact — worth of sales in gift and home products and significantly more in fashion apparel and accessories. Even if their rates of growth have slowed, the two sites continue to do serious business and are likely to do so throughout 2025.

“Shein and Temu are proving that the industry’s go-to-market and distribution models may no longer be as important as they once were.”

Legislation to change or even eliminate the de minimis regulations that allow companies like Shein and Temu to operate with low shipping and operational costs don’t seem to be anywhere on the immediate horizon. Former president Joe Biden talked about it but in the 2024 election climate it seemed like a non-starter given partisan politics. Under the new administration it is likely to not be a priority given all the other initiatives being bandied about.

So, perhaps the way to approach the issue of Shein and Temu is to look at it from the perspective of what is to be learned and what can be gained by the industry as a result.

First, the good news: The success of these two website busi-

nesses proves that the American consumer still very much wants to buy the kind of products the gift and home industry makes and sells. More so, it’s the younger demographic — be it Gen Z, zoomers or whatever future generations are being labeled — that will buy these products. For an industry that has worried that its vast array of want-not-need merchandise was no longer relevant to shoppers more concerned with sustainability and less conspicuous consumption this is indeed good news. Tchotchkes rule.

But Shein and Temu are proving that the industry’s go-to-market and distribution models may no longer be as important as they once were. Yes, this is about e-commerce first and foremost and at the risk of calling up the Department of Redundancy, any retailer or vendor not selling direct to consumer online is simply doomed to fail.

For retailers, the means to set up web businesses are now readily available and turnkey enough that you no longer need a teenager to figure it out. For vendors who once worried about alienating their retail customers by getting into competition with them, all one can say is “Get over it.” The consumer neither knows nor cares who is selling to them. Maybe freefor-all is too strong a phrase ... but then again, maybe it’s not.

But this is not just about selling online. In their physical stores retailers need to be merchandising their assortments to reflect the way Shein and Temu sell. That means a constant flow of new products, offered at impulse-purchase prices and possessing a novelty factor that has often been neglected previously. And it’s up to the vendors to provide that constant supply.

Shein and Temu — and other sites that are yet to come — are not going away. It’s why the old adage “If you can’t fight ‘em, join ‘em” is taking on new and even more poignant meaning.

Trendspotting for Toy Fair 2025

It has been a minute since we last walked the halls at the Javits Convention Center in search of the newest playthings. With Toy Fair finally back in New York City, we can't wait to lace up our walking shoes and check out all that toy makers have to offer. In fact, we decided to get a head start and investigate the latest trends shaping the market. Here’s what we predict will be popular in play in the months ahead.

Take It Outside. Springtime coaxes kids off their screens and into the yard. Designers are responding to a greater demand for outdoor toys that add a wow factor to active play. Marky Sparky Toys is cultivating future Olympians with its Bad Rap Javelin, a lightweight dart that makes for a great game of catch and throw. Firsttime exhibitor A Better Design Co. is showcasing Dunk Ball, a basketball set that connects to any garden hose and cools off players with a dose of water after a slam dunk. With World Cup fever taking hold, kiddos can perfect their game with the portable Soccer Launcher from Golden Bear Toys. Speaking of fancy footwork, a classic '90s toy goes hi-tech with Skip It from Just Play, now featuring lights, sounds and a digital counter.

“Designers are responding to a greater demand for outdoor toys that add a wow factor to active play.”

Raining Cats and Dogs. Pets are commanding a presence in plush, pretend play and board games. Baby’s first playmate may be the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Puppy, a soft musical toy that teaches ABCs, shapes and first words. Over at the Playmobil Cat Café, kids can immerse themselves in a miniature world where cats roam freely and the coffee is always brewing. In Puppy Pile from University Games, players compete

to collect the most pups in one breed, while dodging point-stealing kitties. The ultra-soft Wren plush cat from Purryfuls begs to be cuddled and can even purr.

Big Kid Fun. With the kidult demographic outpacing retail sales of other core age groups, toy makers are building out niche product categories like games to satisfy more mature sensibilities. Moose Games’ The 5 Love Languages Card Game adds excitement to date night with 300 cards of ideas, pop quizzes and get-together ideas for couples. Yahtzee Slots from Ageless Innovation brings a casino vibe to the classic dice game with a tabletop slot machine and oversized score sheets. Hitster Guilty Pleasures from Jumbo Group is a name-that-tune party game during which players build a music timeline as they correctly guess song titles, release dates and artist names. And for the Dungeons & Dragons fans comes D&D Orb of Possibility from FanRoll Dice, which puts a new spin on the classic game with a simple push of a button.

The Need for Speed. It’s a race to the Toy Fair finish line, capped off with a fleet of fast-paced vehicles and playsets. The 100-piece HotShot Speedway from The Learning Journey is a marble maze building kit to keep budding engineers busy. Putting new meaning into soda pop, Mighty Rally from Smart Zone launches a diecast vehicle by removing the pop top lid. With Magna-Tiles Rail Racers Deluxe, kids can design rams, bridges, towers and racetracks and then test their building skills by seeing how fast a mini ball can zoom down them. Mario Kart Standard Kart from Lego Super Mario will get gamers ready to race offline.

Animal of the Year. Mooo-ve over, sloth and hedgehog, and make way for … cows? From board games like Cows in Space from Relatable, to Mochi Puffs plush from Goffa USA, we are seeing signs of an udder-ly perfect playmate.

Q & A

ON THE ROAD WITH Heidi Lee

Heidi Lee’s dedication, expertise and passion for building lasting relationships have made her a trusted partner to her retailers. Her ability to adapt to industry changes while staying true to her relationship-driven approach is a testament to her success and longevity in the field. Over her last 10 years at Road Runners, she has displayed an unwavering dedication to customers, a deep level of industry expertise and a remarkable ability to build meaningful relationships. Learn about her experiences, insights and what continues to drive her in this ever-changing industry.

Q: What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen since you started? What do you think will be the biggest change ahead in 2025 for sales reps?

A: "Since starting this industry, one of the most signifi cant changes I’ve seen is the number of avenues retailers now have to purchase products. The buying landscape has become far more diverse and dynamic between in-person markets, online platforms, direct-from-vendor options, and even social selling. Retailers have more choices than ever, which is exciting and challenging for sales reps like me. It pushes us to demonstrate our value and adapt to our customer’s evolving needs.

"Looking ahead to 2025, the biggest change will be the continued shift toward a hybrid model. Retailers want the flexibility to shop in various ways — whether online, at a trade show, or through direct consultation with their sales reps. As a rep, I will focus on finding ways to be indispensable in this hybrid environment. That means adapting how I support my customers, providing value not just in products but also in insights, personalized service, and solutions that meet their needs."

Q: What keeps you motivated and passionate about your work?

A: "The relationships I've built with my customers and vendors keep me motivated and passionate about my work. This job is more than sales — it’s about fostering connections and being a trusted partner in someone else’s journey. I spent 10 years in social work before transitioning to this industry, and that experience has shaped how I approach my role.

"I find so much joy in helping my customers succeed because they feel like my success. Those moments are gratifying, whether seeing a new product take off in their store or helping

them find the right solution for their business. At the same time, I love working closely with vendors, collaborating to bring their products to the right audience, and helping their brands grow."

Q: What advice would you give yourself if you could talk to yourself on day one of this job today?

A: "The most valuable lesson I’ve ever learned is to focus on what you can control.

"This advice was given to me early on and has stuck with me ever since. I remember my first market vividly — I was running around trying to help everyone else’s customers, feeling overwhelmed and spread thin. I quickly realized that I couldn’t control everything but could control my preparation, product knowledge, and how I showed up for my customers.

"That would be my first lesson to any trainee: Don’t waste energy on things outside your control, like whether a customer buys today or decides to work with someone else. Instead, focus on being the best resource you can be. Know your products inside and out, listen to your customers’ needs, and proactively offer solutions. Those are the things you can control, which will set you apart in this business."

Q: What’s the most unusual or surprising item you’ve ever sold, and what made it memorable?

A: "The most unusual and surprising item I’ve ever sold has to be stickers. When I started working with this product — priced at just $1.50 cost — I honestly questioned how I could profit from it. It seemed like such a small-ticket item that I wasn’t sure it would be worth the effort. But I couldn’t have been more wrong! This stickers brand has become my most profitable line and the most profitable product for many of my retailers."

Q & A 4 QUESTIONS WITH The Beekman Boys

Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Dr. Brent Ridge, owners of the Beekman 1802 skincare brand, talk about their new book, “G.O.A.T. Wisdom.”

Q: What gave you the idea to write a book, and why did you feel it was needed?

A: "In this day and age, so many people get most of their information from social media, and a lot of the 'success' that is depicted comes from 'get rich quick' promises or titans from the tech industry. But the backbone of the American economy has always been and still is, small 'Main Street' businesses. We want to celebrate and inspire people who have dreams of building these types of businesses."

Q: What can small business owners gain from the book? How is it beneficial?

A: (BR) "I have a degree in public health, a medical degree and an MBA, and while I learned many things in the pursuit of these degrees, what I know from having grown Beekman 1802 is that almost everything I needed to be successful was just good old-fashioned common sense. You don't need fancy degrees to be a success. In fact, most of the knowledge you need are things you have already heard before. But 'hearing' and 'listening' are two different things. "G.O.A.T Wisdom" encourages you to hear and listen to the information around you in a different way."

Q: Can you share a bit of your own experience and challenges of owning and running a business, and why you now feel qualified to write such a book?

A: "Beekman 1802 started at the kitchen table of our farm in a small town of 547 people. Sharon Springs, N.Y., is also where we created our first Kindness Shop — on Main Street. And that's where it still stands. We've grown that business to be the No.1 beauty brand across QVC and HSN, Skincare Brand of the Year at Ulta Beauty, and a sought-after collaborator from companies like Disney, Netflix, Universal Studios, Princess cruise lines, and

hotels and airlines around the world. But despite this growth, we consider our independent retail partners to be the real success story of our company. You remind us each and every day about the power and importance of community, and we hope that our success helps make your business wildly successful too."

Q: What makes your book different from other business how-to books?

A: "The world is full of information. We are bombarded with information everywhere we turn. What we are providing the small business owner is wisdom, the Greatest of All Time Wisdom. It worked for us, and we are confident that it will work for you."

BY THE NUMBERS BATH & BODY

The bath and body industry is seeing a shift — men are joining in on the party. What was often considered a more feminine industry with makeup, bubble bath and skincare as the leading products is now becoming more gender neutral with more men openly using products for their own personal care. According to a research study from Mintel, more than half (52 percent) of U.S. men use facial skincare products — that’s a 68 percent increase since 2022, when just 31 percent of men used such products. This trend is especially popular with the younger generations. More than one-third (35 percent) of men aged 18-34 regularly purchase premium hand and body lotions, compared to just 21 percent of all male consumers.

46% of men say CLEAN INGREDIENTS are a factor in purchasing decisions.

GET TECHNICAL

Resilience and strategic plans alone aren’t enough to build solid businesses. Businesses need the right tools and technology to accelerate that plan, advance ambitions and drive meaningful business outcomes faster. Setting up new technology to help with those goals is a big decision, often with high price tags.

SEE MORE PAGE 54

““Technology is not the end, just the means. Approach tech projects with clear eyes and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.”

Pick the Right Tech the Right Way

Settle in for the bumpy ride. From our government to the economy, volatility surrounding our industry keeps stacking up. Last month, I explored the importance of strategic planning and clear goals (specific to your realistic situation) to build more resilient businesses.

But resilience and strategic plans alone aren’t enough. Businesses need the right tools and technology to accelerate that plan, advance ambitions and drive meaningful outcomes faster.

Setting up new technology is a big decision, with high price tags (in direct technology costs, along with significant indirect costs, like management and team oversight). But big initiatives pay off when they help turn change and challenge into differentiation and profitable growth. The catch is they must be the right technology investments for your unique needs.

Let’s look at how to evaluate and prioritize technology projects for greatest impact and avoid costly mistakes.

tech should meet goals and outcomes

Too often, the first question I’m asked is: "What will the technology project cost?" Frankly, that's a shortsighted question without any context.

Instead, ask: What return (profit) will I see? How long will it take? How confident can I be in the outcome? Will this technology solve my problem? Does it advance my plan or fill gaps? How will it differentiate me from competitors or commodities in the market? Write down your answer to each question and share these with your internal team and external tech partners to document alignment and buy-in.

Common mistakes buying technology

In my experience, big digital investments typically underperform in four ways, slowing down time-to-value:

Progress-Killing Budgeting (Yesterday’s Needs, Instead of Tomorrow’s): Given how fast our market, customers and technology changes, don’t budget on autopilot. Make sure your documented plan, defined outcomes, and prioritized technology investments are based on “where the puck is going to be, not where it has been” to borrow wisdom from Wayne Gretzky.

Impact-Killing Overtaxed Teams: The new technology must improve efficiency for your teams, not pile more on their plates or require an enormous learning curve. Team inefficiency inflates operational costs and harms productivity — when your team is constantly playing catch-up, they can’t be creative or proactive to get ahead.

Adoption-Killing Team Capability Gaps: The new solution must augment or advance your team’s skills and competencies,

or it’s not going to drive meaningful value. Best-case scenario here is team members use a subset of the features you pay for, and worst case, they won’t use the tools at all — like buying the Ferrari and never taking it out of second gear.

ROI-Killing Duplicate and High-Cost Systems: The new solution must completely replace costly legacy tools and inefficient workarounds. Older platforms naturally incur high costs to maintain over time, while their value to your business declines. They face higher risks, security issues and even solution failure.

Consider these potholes and plan for them or risk paying extra for duplicated systems, fragmented data, inefficient workflows, and overwhelmed teams.

Consider REJ Framework for Faster Outcomes

At Whereoware, we’ve adopted the Rapid Economic Justification (REJ) Framework to mitigate these challenges, reduce operational headaches and drive faster financial results. The REJ Framework weighs the risks, benefits and costs of a solution to better understand the project’s value and likelihood to achieve business goals. Here’s how it works:

Defining Solution Benefits and Economic Focus: Every investment should make economic sense — solving real problems and avoiding unnecessary costs. The REJ Framework helps you steer clear of “shiny object syndrome” and stay focused on your specific issues, whether that’s cost reduction, market differentiation, or customer experience improvement.

Mapping Tech Benefits to Goals and Outcomes: REJ helps you evaluate a solution against your goals and proactively answer questions like: What challenges are we solving with this solution? How will it improve the experience for our team and customers? What will it cost, and what existing expenses could it replace? How soon can we expect to see ROI?

By addressing and documenting these questions upfront, you tie the solution’s value directly to your unique circumstances and gain team alignment on the plan and expectations.

Setting ROI Expectations and Estimating Time-to-Value (TTV): Next, quantify the value of a solution, setting realistic and measurable outcomes. This step creates a confident business case for technology projects, a defined roadmap to achieve business outcomes, and an action-oriented measurement plan to get there faster. With your team aligned and excited to use the tech and solve known problems, you’ll see important quick wins faster.

Never forget that technology is not the end, just the means. Approach tech projects with clear eyes and turn challenges into opportunities for growth.

THE DONKEY THAT NO ONE COULD RIDE

Author Anthony DeStefano begins his creative telling of the beloved Bible story of Christ’s triumphant entry by introducing the young donkey who has yet to realize his important mission. The lowly creature believes he can do nothing noble, but that’s before he meets Jesus...

Then Jesus said to the donkey, “It’s time that you knew About the great thing

That you’re destined to do...”

He hears the sad donkey cry, “Just leave me alone and cast me aside. I’m just a poor donkey that no one can ride.”

When Bella Tunno began in 2005, it was just a passion project for founder Michelle Buelow. At the time, she was pregnant with her first child and was looking to launch a charitable fund for kids in need.

It started simple — sewing bibs and burp cloths from her home. But even in the beginning, donations from each sale were made to kids in need. And now it has grown into something bigger than she imagined.

“Bella Tunno has grown from its humble beginnings, but we’ve never forgotten our mission to help change children’s lives,” the company’s website reads. Bella Tunno has a core focus on philanthropy, providing one meal to one child for every product sold. Since its inception, the company has provided more than 13.8 million meals.

Made with a food-grade silicone, Wonder Spoons are safe to chew on and soft on gums while also sporting a handle long enough for assisted feeding. The Wonder Plate is divided into three sections for food mastery, with symmetrical top sections to encourage balanced feeding and ambidextrous motor skills.

The Happy Snacker is a two-piece cup set with easy grip handles and a specially designed top to help limit crumbs. The Happy Sippy Cup is an unbreakable, leakresistant and mold-resistant cup with a soft spout. It grows with each child, as the cup can be used without the lid when little ones are ready to progress to open cup drinking.

In its 20 years, Bella Tunno has become a staple in the baby industry for its personality-filled products. Each product is designed with purpose. The Wonder line — including the plate, bowl and spoons — features several products that were designed with doctors to help aid in self-feeding.

Each product in the Bella Tunno catalog comes in a variety of colors and personality-rich phrases. The silicone products are also dishwasher safe for easy cleanup.

PREPPING FOR PINT-SIZED Personalities

Kids are little bottles of energy. They like what they like and they aren’t afraid to tell you otherwise. Stocking for these younger consumers — some of the toughest critics — can be challenging, with trends constantly changing, but there are a few key trends for 2025 to keep in mind and in store.

Although they don’t always have money of their own, kids are a major market. They may not be making the purchases, but their personalities are often the driving factor and those personalities are multifaceted. Because there are so many sides to these young consumers, it’s important to provide ample outlets for them to express their interests, creativity and individuality. Those traits can really shine through in their room décor, fashion choices and even in play.

“As children navigate the journey from infancy to adolescence, their evolving wardrobe reflects their varied interests, personality traits, and growing sense of self,” the Carousel of Flowood, a children’s boutique in Flowood, Miss., wrote in a blog post.

In fashion, bright colors will remain a hot spot, but so will a theme of retro revival, according to a 2025 kids trend report from Global Sources. Flared jeans, geometric patterns, color blocking and other past styles are being revamped for a new generation.

“Retro kidswear appeals to a wide range of consumers, from parents who grew up in the era that inspired the designs to children who appreciate the vintage aesthetic,” the report said. Outside of fashion, kids’ personalities can also infl uence their rooms. Creating an inspiring yet safe and comfortable

place for them to explore, learn and play can be done through the décor. According to the 2024 Houzz U.S. Emerging Summer Trends Report, top trending searches related to kids’ room décor included words like “teen lounge” and “kids gaming bedroom.”

The video game aesthetic is a popular trend for both younger consumers and teens. Products that depict video game controllers or feature phrases like “Game Over,” “Level Up” and other gaming colloquialisms are rising in popularity. Décor that uses neon lighting and other similar retro vibes are key to rounding out this aesthetic for both boys and girls alike.

For comfy lounge-like spaces, trends are pointing to luxurious plush, soft pillows and blankets — think furlike fabrics for pillows and large knitted wool throws. Fun prints are in, too. The Global Sources report says animal prints, geometric patterns and wide stripes will be hot this year.

And then there’s play. Unusual critters and eccentric plush are growing in popularity for kids of all ages — some like the unique axolotl and capybara trends even cross into décor.

Play sets that inspire creativity — think DIY art, jewelry and crochet kits — are also ramping up. The ability to customize the projects through elements like color choices and patterns adds to the personalized feeling of the finished project.

Kids and teens often express their personalities through the décor in their bedrooms.

IN THE BOYS’ CLUB

While researching for this product story about gifts for men, we looked into how men spend their free time and were surprised to find how greatly the results varied depending on the source. According to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2023 findings from its American Time Use Survey, men spent 5.6 hours a day partaking in leisure and sports activities. Watching television was the leisure and sport activity that occupied the most time, with men spending an average of three hours a day watching television.

The next most common leisure and sports activities were socializing and communicating and playing games and using a computer for leisure. In other surveys and polls — from sources like the Pew Research Center and men’s lifestyle magazine GQ — cooking, sports, beer and cocktails, history, outdoor activities like hiking and camping, working on hobby projects, self-care and exercising were also named as areas of interest.

With such a wide array of potential interests, we gathered a sampling of men’s gifts that touch on all those topics and more, because, at the end of the day, every store’s needs are unique, just like their customers.

As you can see, things look a little di erent in Duke Cannon Country these days. It was time for bit of remodeling, so we spruced up our packaging to give things a more consistent look and make it easier for customers to spot on crowded store shelves. But while the exterior may have changed, you can rest assured that our purpose has not: to make high-quality grooming goods for men who get things done.

A YEAR FULL OF HOLIDAYS

Consumers are constantly decorating throughout the year. Some have their own aesthetics they stick to year-round, while others draw inspiration from nearby holidays to set the mood. According to the 2025 Gift Book Consumer Survey, consumers across all generations plan to buy décor for top holidays like Christmas and Halloween. But if we dig a little deeper, younger generations (think millennials and Gen Z) seem to have interest in decorating for some of the less conventional holidays.

Décor for patriotic holidays like Memorial Day and 4th of July is expected to be sought after by a quarter of millennials this year and 21 percent of Gen Z. Valentine’s Day is not far behind, with 19 percent of millennials and 22 percent of Gen Z; and St. Patrick’s Day is in the mix with 15 percent and 13 percent of millennials and Gen Z, respectively.

Look through the next few pages for a sprinkling of décor to cover a full year of holidays — from Valentine’s Day to Mardi Gras to Christmas and everything in between.

TRAVEL TRIED AND TRUE

Markets are one of the best parts of our job. But markets, and travel in general, require longer hours and lots more walking and standing for everyone involved. Thankfully, our team has gotten pretty good at packing for comfort thanks to the addition of a few great products. Consider stocking these savvy products for your vacation-bound customers or even for yourself to prepare for the next market season.

LENISE WILLIS

Me Moi’s Compression Socks memoi.com

Being pregnant this market season, I learned the great value of having a pair of compression socks on hand. After the first couple of days at Atlanta Market, my ankles and feet were unbelievably sore and swollen. So I was very grateful when Me Moi let me test a pair of their bambooblend graduated compression socks.

The socks have a “comfort cuff” for a non-slip fit, anti-microbial properties that fight against foot odor, a seamless toe that prevents irritation, arch support and a cushioned sole that reduces pain and pressure. My feet, ankles and calves felt some relief as soon as I put them on, and after wearing them the entire day, my feet and ankles weren’t as swollen or sore at the end of the day. The best part is that they are designed to add pressure to all the right spots, unlike some compression socks that are tight all around.

ADELAIDE ELLIOTT

Voesh’s Mani Moments Vitamin Recharge voesh.com

No matter how hard I try, I always find myself cutting it close when it comes to packing and getting ready for a trip. At the latest edition of Las Vegas Market, I actually missed the deadline for getting my nails done. Thankfully, I had the perfect product on hand for this mani emergency: a travel-ready manicure kit from Voesh!

The four-step kit, infused with vitamin C and scented with grapefruit, came with a sugar scrub, softening cream mask, massage butter for my hands and forearms, and a dual-grit nail file so that I could shape and smooth my nails. The sugar scrub, cream mask and massage butter combination worked together perfectly to soften my hands and clean up my scraggly cuticles, and the nail file was the perfect size and grit for shaping my uneven nails.

AMANDA ERD

Mud Pie’s Self-Care Essentials Kit wholesale.mudpie.com

Travel of any kind can be daunting, whether it’s a four-hour plane ride or a six-hour road trip. The Look Good, Feel Good Essentials Kit from Mud Pie is a nice little package of ways to help myself find that serene place when I’m away.

The satin sleep mask is useful both on the plane and at the hotel to ensure that total darkness I crave when trying to sleep. Even on the nights I don’t get a full rest, I can still make sure I look my best with the included under-eye patches to help smooth skin and reduce puffiness. The bath bomb makes for a lovely end to a long day back at the hotel, too.

All of this comes with a handy carrying tin, so you can restock your favorites and keep all these self-care essentials together every trip. Plus, it’s compact for easy packing in any suitcase or carry-on.

AMERICAN MADE

Sustainability — it’s that buzzword that won’t go away. And for people like Simona Bunardzhieva, it’s the buzzword that fuels creativity.

Papergem started in 2020 after Bunardzhieva learned that — at the time — 98 percent of wrapping paper on the market was not recyclable.

“[It] was a complete shock to me,” she said. “After some quick research I found that it can be made not only recyclable, but also compostable and biodegradable.”

And so Bunardzhieva’s mission became just that — to create wrapping paper that helps protect the environment and promote eco-conscious practices without sacrificing designs. Five years later, Papergem not only creates beautiful sustainable wrapping papers, but has also added tissue paper, gift tags, stickers, notepads, cards and more to its growing catalog.

Each product is designed by Bunardzhieva, who brings her background in graphic artistry and illustration to the company. Currently she is the sole designer — a task she describes as being her favorite part of the job.

“I’m an Illustrator by trade, so that part comes very easily to me,” Bunardzhieva said. “I love to look at current trends for inspiration, but not necessarily in the stationery industry. I’m often inspired by fashion, interior design, cinema and so on. I believe it offers a fresh and unexpected take on the design.”

Standing by her commitment to sustainability, Papergem uses only recyclable, compostable and biodegradable materials and has a zero-plastic tolerance in both the products and packaging. Currently, Papergem is available in more than 60 stores across the U.S. and Bunardzhieva has no plans of slowing down.

“I’m focused on releasing more thoughtful and unexpected, but still beautiful, designs and expanding into new product categories,” she said. “The goal always has been to replace as much non-recyclable wrapping paper as possible and educate our customers along the way.”

WRAPPED IN ART

Hand-strung by college students, moms and veterans

BEADED BEAUTY

Water and sweat resistant

Texas-based sisters Lexi Lindemulder and Lauren Schwing, co-founders and CEOs of Beaded Blondes, grew up with entrepreneurial parents who owned their own businesses. Lindemulder says they always knew they wanted to work for themselves, it was just a matter of finding the right idea. That spark of inspiration came along four years ago after then-25-year-old Schwing paired a beaded ring with her Texas A&M College class ring as an affordable way to accent it.

“I kept getting questions about it, so I went to my sister, Lexi, with the idea to start making and selling them,” Schwing said. “We started with one Etsy listing and, with just us two hand stringing at our parents dining room table, we grew into our first workshop and have now outgrown two warehouses.”

Lindemulder, who was a junior in college when they launched the idea, said the business really took off when they introduced new styles along with bracelets and other accessories. They were selling their products wholesale within their first year of business. The sisters’ brand, which sells handcrafted 14-karat-gold-filled beaded rings, bracelets, necklaces and charms, is now in stores all over the U.S.

What sets the product apart from other jewelry brands is the quality of materials and the trendy styles that

tap into consumers’ love of stacking fun and personal accessories. The brand even has college and sororityinspired collections.

“I strive to create designs that are versatile enough for anyone to wear — we like to say anyone from kids to grandmas can wear our pieces,” Lindemulder said.

To stay inspired, Lindemulder tracks emerging trends on social media and puts her own unique spins on them. “I spend hours researching new methods and designs, like with our Gold Beaded Bow Bracelet and our BB Beads, which are acrylic beads we can customize to turn any graphic into a bead. It’s all about brainstorming ideas, followed by hours of research, trial and error, and the hands-on work of stringing everything together to bring the vision to life.”

The beaded jewelry is hand-strung in College Station, Texas by more than 50 college students, moms and veterans and is water-, sweat- and tarnish-resistant. The brand utilizes an in-house makers and at-home stringing program that allows makers to take home kits to make the bracelets and rings.
