NEWS Vera Wang, Spring 2013

Wedding dress trends for Spring 2013 After New York Fashion week back in September, we can expect to see some new trends in bridal couture popping up in Spring 2013. There were five that really dominated the Bridal runways; colour, portrait backs, peplums, lace and convertible gowns. Trend: Colour – Hit the colour trend by going for bold strokes of colour such as smouldering reds or heavenly blues. There’s no need to be confined to a white wedding dressing anymore. Pick any colour that is flattering to your skin tone; just make sure it still looks like a wedding dress. Trend: Portrait backs – This trend is a reminder that your wedding dress is not two dimensional! People will be looking at you from every angle so a demure, romantic back with delicate embroideries, lace frames and peek-a-boo keyholes is the perfect way to wow from every perspective. Trend: Peplum – The peplum has become a popular silhouette lately and it’s crept into bridal couture too. It celebrates curves cinching the waist and gracing the hips. Trend: Lace nouveau – After Kate Middleton’s stunning royal gown last year, lace has held a solid place in many runway collections. Pick a lace entwined dress to salute tradition with a fresh, re-worked design for soft modern romance. Trend: Transformers – Many brides these days are buying more than one dress; The gown, and a second dress to slip into for the after party. Designers have answered this with convertible styles. They’ve included removable skirts, trains and capes that create an outfit with both the elegant gown and a distinct reception look hidden underneath.

While this innovative catering company is based in South Africa, their amazing catering tips will undoubtedly be universally loved. Here are just a few that we love: Make it personal - Serve and eat what you love and what reminds you of your love. The meal you had on your first date, or when he asked you to marry him. Any meal that is special to you. Creativity is the key – Surprise your guests with something a bit different. Infused waters for example, use seasonal fruits and herbs for delicious and cost effective beverages. Comfort foods – If you love pancakes, get a gourmet pancake bar, why not? It’s your day! Twas the night before

Dave and I went to school together so have known each other for around 15 years. I remember looking at him differently one day when we were 18, thinking that he was very good looking but had never appreciated it before! It wasn’t until after we had both left school and Dave was at university that one of our school friends decided to do a bit of meddling and persuaded me to ask Dave out, which I did on his 21st birthday. We went out three days later, going for drinks together although it nearly didn’t happen. I sat inside the bar waiting for him for about half an hour, all the time he was sat outside in the beer garden also thinking he had been stood up! We bumped in to each other eventually though. We talked all evening and had a great time, we were both surprised by how much we actually had in common with each other, then I impressed him by demonstrating my knowledge of the offside rule and creating a complex demonstration out of beer mats, wine glasses and napkins! We had been together for 6 and a half years and had been living together for six months when Dave proposed. It wasn’t unexpected but I still couldn’t quite believe it when he got down on one knee on Christmas morning and presented me with a beautiful diamond and platinum engagement ring. We had planned to have both of our families over for Christmas morning and when they arrived, we were engaged! It was a very happy Christmas!

Brides name: Kelly Thurgood Grooms name: David Carless Home town: Ware, Hertfordshire Ceremony venue: All Saints Church, Hertford Reception venue: Fanhams Hall, Ware Wedding date: 23rd December 2011

We had always said that we didn’t want a really long engagement so we started thinking about a date straight away. I had never particularly wanted a summer wedding so we decided to go with December, as Christmas is my favourite time of year. We thought about getting married on a Friday to help keep costs down so when we were looking, Dave suggested the 23rd, the Friday before Christmas. We reasoned that provided our friends and family could get the day off work, it would give them a long Christmas weekend and we could have a lovely festive wedding. We decided that we wanted to get married in a church and I spoke to the vicar at All Saints, where three generations of my family before me had

pg 13

got married. She agreed, even though Fridays were normally her day off! She allowed us to have carols and Christmas music as part of the ceremony and said that the church would already be decorated for Christmas, this made our decision easy. As we knew that the weather could be tricky at that time of year, it was important to us that our reception venue had a beautiful indoor space for photographs in case we couldn’t get outside. We also wanted to keep our guests warm during the drinks reception. Fanhams Hall had everything, lots of space, a beautiful room for the breakfast, stunning grounds if we were lucky enough to get out there and rooms for people who had travelled to stay in. Dave had three best men and divided the duties between them. He chose his older brother Andrew as his main best man who was tasked with the speech and handing over the rings. His younger brother Ben and friend James were the other two. I had three bridesmaids, my sister Sophie, my friend Allie and Dave’s cousin Georgie. We also had a little flower girl, Cassie, the daughter of the friend who meddled and got us together in the first place. I took my Mum, my sister and Dave’s Mum to all of my dress shopping appointments. I knew that I wanted lace and something sparkly and I also knew that I wanted to cover my shoulders in church so I was looking for long sleeves. I then ended up falling in love with my dress “Dabra” by Enzoani on their website and decided that I could never make a decision on another dress without trying that one on. I found a shop that stocked it and when I tried it on, I really did just know! When I came out of the fitting room, even my sister looked a little emotional which is quite a rarity, so I ordered it there and then. My Mum also ordered me a two tier, cathedral length veil covered in crystals to give my dress some extra sparkle. The dress was strapless so I continued searching for a shrug or jacket that I could wear with it and came across a Sophia Tollie lace bridesmaid’s jacket in a bridal shop near to my work. The lady let me take it home and try it with my dress and it matched perfectly. We wanted to choose our other suppliers based on how well we got on with them and the quality of the service that they provided. When we met Karen, our photographer, I had a similar feeling to the one I had when I tried my dress on – I just knew she was right. We were going to be with her all day so it was really important that we got on well with her. Her style is very unobtrusive and relaxed, exactly how we wanted to feel on our day. Choosing our videographer was also easy. Richard came recommended by a friend and we loved his work. Like Karen, he was easy to get on with, didn’t intrude on the day and promised a fantastic record of our day. Not everyone chooses to have their day recorded but I would absolutely recommend it as a video compliments your photographs beautifully and is such a great thing to show people who couldn’t make it to the day. We were lucky enough to have a friend who is an artist and designer and he created the most amazing stationery for us, designing a fun ‘crest’ that incorporated lots of our favourite things and became an emblem for our wedding day. He created invitations and orders of service for us which were absolutely stunning. He also created table numbers in the same style, but centering around the Twelve Days of Christmas poem to add to our festive theme. I realised that roses would be really expensive around Christmas and I’m actually not that keen on them as cut flowers anyway. Our florist, Sally at Halo Blossom, was the only one that I found who was willing to come up with a beautiful bouquet that didn’t feature roses and still looked just as pretty. We chose hypericum berries and ivy to look festive and she added anemones and lisianthus. She also made absolutely gorgeous candelabras for our table centrepieces that looked amazing in the room at Fanhams Hall.

My final night as a single girl saw me in my old bed at my parent’s house, after a quiet drink in our local pub. I wasn’t really nervous at all and when I woke up the next morning, I actually sat in bed and read for a while before being shouted at by my sister to get in the shower! The wedding wasn’t until 2pm so we were ok for time. Dave’s Mum is my hairdresser and I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my hair now. She arrived early so that she could get back home for Dave and the boys, who had used the morning to have a proper wet shave and be pampered a little. It was so lovely to see my future mother-in-law on the morning. A friend of the family who is a beautician did my makeup which was nice as she has known me for a long time. I had no idea what Dave and the rest of the boys in the bridal party would be wearing as that decision had been left with Dave and kept as a surprise. When I saw my Dad, that was the

first time I had any idea what they were wearing and he looked amazing. Likewise, he hadn’t seen my dress so it was a big reveal in the morning and very emotional.

in between me and the vicar to rectify it. Dave looked round, expecting to see me for the first time and instead seeing his own Mum!

A Rolls Royce Phantom IV picked up my bridesmaids and my Mum then came back for me and my Dad. I was actually really early arriving at the church as I was paranoid about being late. I remember seeing my work friends standing outside with an umbrella, waving at me as I pulled up and me grinning back at them like a loon!

The rest of the ceremony went perfectly and we left the church to the sound of Joy to the World, only to find that the heavens had opened and we couldn’t go outside for fear of being absolutely soaked! The church allowed us to have our group photo taken inside the church and it’s actually a really beautiful picture.

Just before I walked down the aisle, I realised that I hadn’t pulled my veil forwards to cover my face so my Dad quickly yanked it over me. Unfortunately, it got dislodged from my hair as I walked down the aisle and started to slip out! By the time I had reached Dave, it had come completely loose and my mother-in-law appeared

When we got to Fanhams Hall, we had some pictures taken in the grounds despite the rain. Karen had a huge white umbrella which we stood under the whole time and it made for some brilliant quirky photos. Inside, our guests were nibbling on some canapés and little shot glasses of hot soup, washing it all down with mulled wine. We chose winter vegetable cakes for starters and a hearty beef pie for the main dish, after deciding that most people would be having a proper roast dinner a few days later. We then had a yummy chocolate brownie for pudding. The food was amazing and lots of people commented on how great the service was by the staff. My Dad delivered a lovely sentimental speech, and upon mentioning what a great guy he thought Dave was, our little flower girl cheered very loudly, which got everyone laughing. Dave’s speech was very touching, recalling how long we had known each other and some funny memories of our time at school together. Finally, Andrew, Dave’s best man, gave a beautiful speech that quoted Harry Potter (I’m a huge fan), welcomed me in to the family and referenced the Nativity story in a very emotional ending to his speech. Dave and I are huge music fans and throughout the dinner, we had a playlist of a string quartet, playing covers of our favourite rock and pop songs playing. Apparently, lots of people were sat at their tables trying to guess what the songs were so it turned out to be a great icebreaker. We booked a DJ for the evening, again, on recommendation. After our evening guests arrived, everyone was ushered in to the Great Hall to wait for us to cut the cake, which had been made by my auntie. Dave and I then walked in to Huey Lewis and the News, The Power of Love (a nod to Dave’s favourite film Back to the Future). After cutting the cake we had our first dance to Elbow’s One Day Like This, then I had a special dance with my Dad to Don McLean’s American Pie, something we danced to many times when I was a little girl. Fanhams then served up an amazing evening buffet of fish and chips, and bacon and egg rolls. Yum! We went on honeymoon a couple of days after Christmas. It had been organised as a surprise by Dave so I had no clue where we were going until we got to the airport. He had arranged for us to spend 10 days travelling around Sri Lanka and then 4 days relaxing in the Maldives. It was an absolutely incredible experience, not least because I never knew where we were going next; he kept me guessing the whole time!

Married life has been lovely, it feels very different and I have loved every minute of it. We have spent most of our first year decorating our house which has been great. My advice... Decide what the most important aspects of your day are and apportion your budget accordingly. We wanted to get married in my childhood church, make sure that all of our guests were well fed with good quality food and had a great DJ to dance to in the evening who didn’t sound too cheesy. So these were the aspects of the day that we spent the most money on and it was worth every penny. Also, it’s nice to have some surprises. You can easily get caught up in controlling every aspect of the day but it was great for some things to be decided by someone else, like the honeymoon and the suits.

MOR Cosmetics Blood Orange Body Butter

This Benefit face cream is amazing; it kept my face rehydrated all day without looking shiny which I have experienced with other face creams. The smell is so fresh, and it made my skin feel so silky soft I do not have a bad word to say about it, total bliss!!

I recently discovered the luxurious products at MOR cosmetics and they are a treat! This winter their blood orange body butter has become my fail safe way to beat dry dull winter skin. It’s thick and rich, but absorbs quickly instantly banishing those pesky winter scales. Because it’s enriched with vitamins A, C & E and natural oils you can feel it soften and hydrate your skin, as well as see it work its rejuvenation magic. Plus, you’ll smell good enough to eat!

Products Clarins Correcting Cream

Clarins Energizer Cream I love the whole Clarins Daily Energizer range, I actually went into a store and had a skin consultation. I got sick of spending a fortune on cheap products (I am a bit of a product o’holic) so decided to bite the bullet and buy more expensive products and haven’t looked back since. My skin felt smoother after just one use and instantly looked more radiant. The products have caffeine in so give skin the perk up it needs – especially after a long season of wedding shows!

www.clarins.co.uk

My must-use winter product is Clinique Even Better hand cream. I find my hands get so dry in the winter, but this hand cream really helps to keep them hydrated and soft. It’s long lasting - even after washing my hands I don’t need to reapply straight away, and it doesn’t feel greasy in the way that some other hand creams do. It contains SPF15 to help protect against sun damage, and as it is fragrance free it’s suitable for even sensitive skin.

BANISH THOSE

BINGO WINGS AT HOME

Your arms are on full display on your wedding day, unless you have a little shrug, wrap or your wedding dress has sleeves, so taking the time to shape them is essential for looking gorgeous in your dream dress. A simple way to achieve slim, toned and sexy arms is with a few simple exercises at home. Start with some press-ups. By raising and lowering your body you will be banishing those bingo wings in no time. Try kneeling to start with (if you find it easier) and do 10 press-ups, have a small rest and repeat for a total of three sets.

alternating bicep curls

Team this with alternating bicep curls, using a filled bottle of water, or other item of weight around the house. Do 10 repetitions for each arm take a short break and repeat for a total of three sets. If you want to work your bingo wings super hard finish off with tricep dips; hold onto the edge of a stable chair, smoothly lower yourself down by bending your arms, taking your elbows back behind you. The larger the bend in your knee, the easier the exercise should be to perform, so adjust your leg position to maximise your gains from each dip. Again, aim for three sets of 10 repetitions of the exercise. If press-ups don’t float your boat, try going swimming to work your arms, and the rest of your body. Break up the lengths of breast stroke with a few lengths of front crawl to raise the heart rate and burn those calories and tone your arms.

tricep dips

For the best possible effects always team regular exercise with a healthy eating plan and plenty of water and you will be looking and feeling your best in no time. To help you achieve your goals, whatever they maybe for your wedding day, take part in the USN Body & Lifestyle Challenge. The 12 week challenge is a great way to kick start a healthy eating and exercise routine teamed with nutritional supplements to help aid your recovery from exercise and supplement your healthy eating plan with additional protein, fibre and carbohydrates in an easy, no-fuss method.

JUST GOOD

Friends

We first met when we were 17 and became really good friends, but didn’t get together until we were 24 and both realised that there was more between us than just friendship. However, soon after we got together I was due to leave for Thailand to do a bit of travelling. In the end Dan gave up his job and flew out to visit me, he stayed a while and we ended up coming home together! We got engaged on the August bank holiday in 2009, after we had been together for six years. We went for a Sunday morning walk along the river Cam, when suddenly he got down on one knee and proposed to me. I started to cry and didn’t immediately say yes as I was too busy saying “thank you”. I was eight months pregnant at the time so was very surprised and emotional! Dan

later told me that he had been a bit concerned I was going to discover the ring, he had hidden it in his backpack and when we got out of the car to go for the walk, I started to rummage about in it looking for something. Thankfully, I didn’t discover the ring, which was a single solitaire diamond set in a platinum band. Although we both loved the idea of an outdoor summer wedding we decided upon a winter wedding pretty quickly as we both felt that the British summer was far too unpredictable. We didn’t want to spend thousands of pounds planning an outdoor wedding only for it to be grey and miserable. We decided to marry in winter as we could plan to be indoors and cosy regardless of what the weather was doing.

pg 37

We both really wanted a log fire and had our hearts set on a barn for the reception. We spent a lot of time looking at venues online, but only visited two. The second venue was South Farm and we just fell in love with the place! We first visited just after the New Year on a very grey day, but the venue was bright and colourful and still had all the Christmas decorations up. When we walked into the barn we just looked at each other and both knew that it was where we wanted to celebrate our marriage. We also loved that there were different rooms which we could use for different parts of the day. As the barn looked so beautiful all decked out we decided on a Christmas wedding, but without a Christmas theme. We chose a date between Christmas and New Year as many people are off work then and without a lot to do! My wedding dress was an Amanda Wyatt, it was the fifth dress I tried on and it just felt right. I haven’t seen a wedding dress that I like as much since, it was beautiful. I had planned to wear it with a fake fur or feather wrap to keep warm, but decided that the dress was too beautiful to be covered so only had a light scarf to put around me for when we were outside. We wanted an informal feel to the day so didn’t hire suits, the men wore their own but with a teal tie to match the bridesmaid dresses. We wanted our friends and family to feel comfortable. I was happy for the bridesmaids to wear their hair and make-up however they wanted, I also took into account their preferences when searching for dresses. In the end they wore teal coloured Coast dresses with a fake fur shrug and a bag instead of flowers. We met wedding photographers, Tom and Lina, at the Red Lion in Histon to discuss our wedding, we liked them straight away and didn’t bother meeting with any other photographers.

pg 38

The best man was Dan’s oldest friend, Andrew, and the bridesmaids were my sister, Heidi and Dan’s sister, Deryn. Our little boy Alex (2) was the pageboy, and my friend’s daughters, Anna (4) and Lucy (2), were unofficial flowergirls. We didn’t put any pressure on the children to do anything, I didn’t mind if on the day they didn’t feel like walking down the aisle with me. The night before the wedding I stayed at my sister’s house with her and her boyfriend, just eating pizza and having a glass of wine. I was up at 6am for a morning run in the dark, just to have time to myself before the day started. On the way to the hairdressers I stopped off at the crematorium, where my Mum’s ashes are scattered and practiced my wedding speech! My sister is a hairdresser so her colleague, Sarah, did our hair. It was very relaxed in the salon, we were drinking champagne and eating croissants as our hair was being styled. We then headed to South Farm, where we met the make-up artist Kate, who is also a friend of my sister. It was a really relaxed and fun morning and I didn’t feel nervous at all, just really excited. The ceremony was at 2pm and held in the Old Dairy at the venue. My bridesmaids Heidi and Deryn held the hands of my two year old son Alex; all three followed me down the aisle. I had also asked the daughters of my friend, Katie, if they would like to walk down the aisle as well. Lucy (2) was a bit overwhelmed and started to cry but Anna (4) was not going to let that stop her and was happy to have her moment! My Dad gave me away, and as we started to walk down the aisle I felt very emotional and the tears started. Rather embarrassingly I was sniffing quite a bit during the ceremony and the registrar had to hand me a tissue! I walked down the aisle to Etta James’ ‘At Last’. We kept the ceremony pretty short with just one reading from my Aunty Pam. It all seemed to happen very quickly, but I

in a Cambridge pub and thought that they would be perfect for us. Although it wasn’t cheap to have a live band perform at the reception, it was worth every penny as we had such an amazing party. It was brilliant to have all the people who we care about most with us celebrating, dancing and drinking. Those memories are very precious. As we have a little boy we didn’t travel far for our honeymoon. We had three nights in the Arden Hotel in Stratford-upon-Avon, which was very luxurious and a wedding gift from my father in law. Since getting married our little family has grown, with the recent arrival of our daughter Poppy. From the outset we wanted a relaxed wedding which is actually quite hard to achieve. In many ways having it so close to Christmas did add a certain amount of stress to what is already quite a stressful event. Obviously businesses close for Christmas and there is the possibility of bad weather affecting deliveries etc. I tried to avoid putting too much pressure on myself. For example, I didn’t really have any flowers, just a bouquet, button holes and posies for the flower girls, so if there was a problem with the flower delivery it wouldn’t matter too much. Instead we decorated our tables with candles, which was perfect for a winter wedding.

really enjoyed it and I don’t even recall feeling nervous. I was more concerned that my nose might be running as I fought back the tears! The drinks reception was held in the House at South Farm, with warm winter Pimms and Thai canapés. It is such a beautiful room with a log fireplace. The fire was lit and the room felt cosy and Christmassy. Before the rest of our guests joined us, Dan and I spent some time together chatting and having our photos taken. Tom and Lina, the photographers, made us feel very relaxed so we could chat naturally to each other and with them as they took the pictures. I was freezing for the outdoor ones but it was worth it as the pictures are amazing! South Farm has a Thai tuktuk, so we went for a spin in it with our son which was great fun and a great surprise. Our wedding meal was a Thai buffet followed by crème caramel. Neither my Dad nor Dan felt comfortable doing a wedding speech, so breaking with tradition I did a speech. I mainly thanked people, but it was very emotional and I know that it wasn’t just me feeling a bit tearful by the end of it. Thankfully the best man’s speech was absolutely hilarious, certainly the best I have heard, it was genuinely funny and well thought out. Instead of a wedding cake, my friend Emily made cupcakes for us as a wedding gift. She also sculpted figurines in icing of Dan, Alex and I, which must have taken her ages! One of the things that we felt was really important was the music in the evening. We could only afford to have a small wedding with about 50 day guests and another 50 in the evening, so we really wanted the evening to be a party and to be equally as important as the wedding day. We both wanted live music. Dan’s sister, Deryn, saw a local band Charlie and the Funk Factory playing

WHERE TO

WED?

The save the dates have gone out, the church is booked, now all you need to do is find your dream venue. Easy right?

F

ull of excitement and still in that “just engaged glow”, you and your future hubby sit down for what you hope will be a fun evening of planning. You start discussing your guest list, who will be in your bridal party, who will be coming to the day and who will be coming to the evening. Satisfied and rather smug that you have completed your first wedding planning task without even a tiny disagreement, you then count the numbers and realise that between you both you have over 200 “close family and friends”. You reach for another bottle of wine and start crossing people off the list (mainly from his side) and if you’re lucky enough you may reach a more sensible number. And that’s just the beginning…. For most brides a wedding has a lot of expectations to live up to. Most girls have been dreaming of their big day since they first played dress up in their mum’s wedding veil, so you want to get it right and who could blame you?

One of the first things you should consider is what time of year you want to get married. Although most weddings still take place within the spring and summer, over the last few

pg 42

years we have seen record amounts of rainfall over July and August. This has meant venues are now experiencing a real shift in the wedding season, with a lot of brides now opting for “off peak” wedding packages and booking winter weddings, or taking a chance with April showers. Luckily venues are recognising this and many now provide all weather marquees so couples no longer have to fear that they will be serving their wedding breakfast with a side of hypothermia. One of the main considerations when booking a venue should be the location of your photographs. For summer weddings, look for a pavilion, a picturesque fountain or an open lake. However at winter weddings you can’t expect your guests to stand around in the cold for an hour and a half while your photographer snaps the outside shots. Make sure you ask your wedding coordinator about inside locations too; look for a dramatic staircase, fireplace or feature wall. Anyone opting for an outdoor-based wedding, be it summer or winter, will need to ensure the venue is prepared for all eventualities including shelter from scorching sunshine, pouring rain and freezing cold!

Warren House

will have a room capacity for a wedding breakfast and then an overall capacity for evening guests. Smaller to mid-sized venues may take away a few tables to make way for your evening guests and the dance floor, and will often convert the top table into your evening buffet table. When looking around your venue ask your coordinator how they plan on running your day and coordinating your guests. If they are planning on turning the room around for the evening ask what happens to your guests while this is in progress. For the men mainly, the testament of a good wedding is all in the menu. Whether your venue has its own chef or you have to outsource your catering, it is recommended that you have a taste session ahead of your big day. You need to make sure that the menu works for the time of year and that it will suit most tastes. You will never please everyone with your menu so try to go for either a conventional starter or a conventional main, that way you can please even fussy eaters with at least one course. Alternatively, why not try a “Bride” and “Groom” menu and ask your guests to pick a team!

“ensure the venue is prepared for all eventualities including shelter from scorching sunshine, pouring rain and freezing cold!”

Once you have the practicalities sorted you can then move onto the fun part of creating a theme for the day. For great tips and ideas on creating your very own wedding wonderland please turn to our venue styling feature on page 54.

Traditionally couples tend to book their weddings close to where they live or near to where the bride grew up, that way the bride can get ready at home before making her way to the church or venue. Choosing a venue in your hometown also makes it easier for guests to make their way to the venue, as more than likely they will live close by. Alternatively, a lot of couples choose locations away from home, often in sunnier climates. This can change the whole day dramatically - including the number of attendees, especially if you are asking your guests to attend your big day at their own expense. In these cases couples will generally tie the knot abroad but will then throw a big party for all of their friends upon their return. The average wedding has around 100 people in attendance, these may be broken up into day and evening guests which is a good way of making your budget go further. Either way, you will need a venue which works for your number. When sourcing venues, visualise where your top table will be positioned and work out where your dance floor will be situated. RISE OF THE

BRIDEZILLA We have all heard stories of brides who have morphed into monsters during the build-up to their big day. From firing bridesmaids to over feeding them, weddings are capable of turning the most level-headed woman into a bridezilla.

N

ot content with stripping bridesmaids of their individual identity by cloning them in taffeta monstrosities. It seems that the bridezilla will go to extreme lengths to completely shred their bridesmaids of their self-respect. Poor Jenny from Richmond had her very own identity crisis when asked to be a bridesmaid to her friend *Kerry* “I was thrilled to be a bridesmaid to start with, then my friend who I had loved like I sister since we were 11 suddenly morphed into a total diva. She was so demanding that we lost our names, throughout the whole process she would refer to us as ‘bridesmaid’, she wanted us all to buy the same dresses for the rehearsal dinner and have our hair dyed exactly the same shade of brunette as each other for the big day!” So you might be thinking that those particular bridesmaids should have just told that bridezilla to fly away with her white doves and cluck off, but is it really best to be left out in the cold? Poor Siobhan from Hythe knows only too well what the frosty treatment of a bridezilla can feel like... “When my best friend told me that she was engaged I immediately started discussing Maid of Honour duties. She then proceeded to tell me that an acquaintance of hers was to be her Maid of Honour, as she could afford the dress and I was too flat-chested to look good in it. Needless to say, I did not attend the wedding and we are no-longer best friends.” So when it comes to weight, just how are your poor bridesmaids meant to win?? We have one bride wanting her bridesmaid to gain a few extra cup sizes and another wanting her bridesmaid to reduce her watermelons into lemons. Sonia from Leigh-on-Sea goes on to explain “I was bridesmaid at a university friend’s wedding. At first she seemed pretty relaxed about everything, and then after two months she turned into a monster. She suggested that another bridesmaid had a boob reduction so that they wouldn’t ‘out-shine’ her ample pair. When told that was not an option, the bride proceeded to have her own boob job, to ensure the attention was well and truly on her.”

If you are already exhibiting symptoms... here are a few remedies: • It’s easy for brides to get caught-up in the furore of wedding planning, but try not to neglect the other person this day is about. Don’t assume that your fiancé does not want to be involved and remember what this day signifies for both of you. • Set aside evenings where there is a strict ‘no wedding talk’ rule with friends, family and your fiancé. This will give you a break from the stress of planning and save you from appearing self-absorbed.

Although it appears that not every bride is convinced that all good things come in small packages, “I went to a wedding once where the bride-to-be over-fed her bridesmaids in the run up to the wedding, to ensure that she was the thinnest one going down the aisle. There was even a weigh-in before the big day so that she could be certain that she was the lightest, some of the Bridesmaids were so scared of her they actually put on multiple layers just to make sure they tipped the scales”, one horrified guest recalls. Another bride even demanded that Lydia a maid of honor from Chislehurst grew out her pixie crop, “so that guests wouldn’t mistake me for a man. The worse bit is that the bride then ordered each of her bridesmaids to tie their hair in a ponytail and fixed appointments for us at the local hairdressers at our own expense to have our hair groomed into a style only worthy of the gym.”

• D elegate tasks to others. Don’t try and take everything on, but remember that there are ways to ask for things to be done.

And it appears that not even families can be spared from a scathing attack from the bridezilla. “My sister got engaged to a lovely man and they set the date for two years later”, Emma-Jane a loving sister from Chelmsford recalls. “Nine months after her engagement my boyfriend proposed, completely out of the blue. When my sister returned from holiday to hear of my happy news, her reaction was most unexpected. Instead of throwing her arms round me in congratulations, I received a slap around the face. She said that I was doing it on purpose and that my fiancé should take back the proposal, despite us deciding to get married a year before her wedding.”

• Most importantly enjoy it. Most people only plan on doing this once. Take a step back and just absorb what is happening on the day, you’ll want the memories to last a life time.

So ladies if you recognise yourself in any of these stories it might be time to take stock before your bridesmaids turn into alcoholics, your sister emigrates and your mum is conveniently out at a “yoga class” every time you seem to pop in with your scrapbook!

• Try to stop thinking about it having to be ‘perfect’. Nothing can be truly perfect. If you start replacing perfect with: ‘memorable’, ‘romantic’, ‘loving’, or ‘fun’ it might help lower the stress of trying to achieve perfection.

WRIGHT all along... Dean and I first met through my friend Lucy (who is now married to Dean’s brother). At first Dean and I were just friends and after six years of friendship, a lot of flirting and the occasional kiss Dean asked me out. Dean had asked me out a few times before but I always said no as I was worried it would ruin our friendship if it didn’t work. Eventually at a friend’s wedding I asked Dean if he would like to see how things go, and we have never looked back since. I was attracted to his fantastic personality and of course his handsome features. Dean was just so much fun and always made me laugh, I think that in the beginning I was just afraid to ruin things.

Brides name: Kerrie Browne Grooms name: Dean Wright Home town: Brentwood Ceremony and reception venue: Gosfield Hall Wedding date: 2nd December 2011

For our first date Dean took me to The Piano Lounge in Epping, I was so nervous even though we had known each other for ages!! After about 2 and half months I knew I was falling in love with Dean. After being together for 2 amazing years Dean proposed. I always hoped he would ask me but I was so shocked when he finally did as I never thought it would really happen. We were living in Singapore at the time but had returned home to visit our families. Dean got down on one knee and asked me to marry him in front of my mum, dad, sister and brother in law, as well as my dearest aunt & uncle who had flown in from Australia. For me it was the perfect proposal. I am a big family girl and Dean knows how much

pg 65

my family mean to me. It was the most amazing feeling having them all there to share in this beautiful moment with us. The ring was gorgeous, it was a radiant cut diamond on a platinum band, and I felt like a very lucky girl! Not long after our engagement we were in full planning mode, we decided on a black tie theme. Due to the time of year we thought this would give the day a romantic and glamorous feel. We both loved the idea of a winter wedding and chose the beautiful Gosfield Hall. The grounds are stunning all year round and the interior is so elegant, it just worked so well with our theme. We chose Gosfield Hall as unlike other large houses, Gosfield Hall allows you to use all of the property and the grounds. I fell in love with the venue as soon as I saw it. It’s every girls dream to shop for a wedding dress, and my mum very generously bought my dress from Vera Wang. I cried the first time I tried it on, as did my mum and cousin who were both at the fitting. The dress took my breath away it made me feel so special, I knew instantly that it was “the one”. I was like a little girl and didn’t want to take it off! My final night was spent at home with my mum and aunt as well as our little girl who was 7 months old at the time. It was a lovely relaxing evening as I wanted to be fully prepared for the big day ahead of me. On the big day the preparations started about 7am, I chose to get ready at the venue in the beautiful Bridal suite – which is like something out of Cinderella. As I pulled up to the venue I saw my bridesmaid Lucy arriving and promptly burst into tears, I could not believe the day was finally here. All the preparations and details that I had been working on for this huge day were finally in motion.

pg 66

My make-up was done by a fantastic artist called Lisa Barker and my hair was styled by Terry Marshall. I was over the moon with both, especially as the day before the wedding I had decided to wear my hair down instead of the “up do” which we practised in the trials. Getting ready that day I felt very calm, everything just felt so surreal but the moment I climbed into my dress the nerves hit me. My nerves finally subsided as I rounded the corridor to walk down the 112 foot aisle to Dean. We decided to have a civil ceremony hosted in the Queens Chamber, and it was a good choice as it just looked incredible. As I walked down the aisle I couldn’t stop smiling, I felt so proud and happy that all our amazing friends and family were here with us to witness me marrying the man of my dreams. I just felt so happy, I couldn’t believe Dean was finally going to be my husband and I couldn’t wait to be his wife. I walked down the aisle to song bird by Eva Cassidy. The ceremony was incredible and I loved every moment of it. After the ceremony we treated our guests to a medley of songs by Ian a fantastic Ratpack and Sinatra singer. We then moved to the main room for the wedding breakfast, the room looked so opulent and so fitting with our theme, it felt like we were in a fairy tale! We chose to celebrate with 108 of our nearest and dearest as well as 60 evening guests. We wanted our closest friends and family to witness our marriage, and we certainly got our wish. For our wedding breakfast we decided to give our guests a choice of 3 starters, mains and desserts. As we wanted everyone to

have a meal they really enjoyed. The speeches were fantastic, emotional and very funny. We decided our first dance would be to Joe Cocker ‘Beautiful’ which is our song. It’s so romantic but we giggled like teenagers all the way through as we were so happy. For the evening entertainment we had a DJ who was supplied by the venue. We would have liked to pick our own as we, like most people, have our own musical tastes but unfortunately this wasn’t an option. After the big day we spent a couple of well-earned weeks relaxing in the Maldives for our honeymoon at the amazing Reethi Rah resort, it was out of this world and the perfect ending to our perfect wedding! I love married life, I enjoy being a wife and calling Dean my husband I feel so proud to be Mrs Wright. In the future we plan to have more babies and to enjoy life to the full. We often discuss that one day we plan to head to Vegas and renew our vows, and with a bit of luck I will get to wear my dress again - if I can ever fit into it after another child :) “I would advise all future brides to savour every moment of your big day, everyone gave that advice to me and I still can’t believe how quickly it went. As soon as we were married and walked back down the aisle as man and wife I wanted to do it all over again. It’s one of the most important days of your life so hold on to every detail and enjoy it.”

HOW TO PICK YOUR

VIDEOGRAPHER Videography isn’t something everyone has experience with, so when it comes to picking a videographer for your big day, you’ll want to make the right choice! We’ve put together a checklist so that you can make sure you’re videographer suits you down to the ground. So firstly, what exactly is videography?

Videography is a way of capturing your wedding memories in video form (your very own chick flick). It means you can remember ever detail and relive your special day, time after time. You can document everything from the excitement of getting ready and the romance of the ceremony, to the aftermath when everyone gets to the bar, all on a DVD to share with family and friends. These are some of the top factors to consider in making sure your wedding video is exactly what you are hoping for:

Communication

‘I know exactly what you mean’ Trying to explain the dream video you have in mind isn’t always easy, so it’s really important that your videographer understands you. Make sure you pick someone who you get on with and find easy to communicate with. That way, the ideas that are important to you will be captured in your DVD without any disappointments.

Grooms

pg 72

Demos

‘I like your style’ You wouldn’t buy a wedding dress without trying it on first, so don’t hire a videographer without seeing some of their previous work! Check that they film and edit in a style that suits you. Videographers will always have their own unique style so be careful not to pick an artsy, cinematic style videographer if you’re hoping for a fly-on-the-wall documentary.

The equipment

‘It’s all covered’ Good quality equipment is always going to help toward a good quality end result, so it doesn’t hurt to ask about the equipment. Check if it’s up to date. The amount of equipment is also important. A single camera is not likely to guarantee you capture everything. Two cameras will allow for better shots and reduce the chance of missing important moments. Finally a third camera provides even more safety and more creative options. Having said that, the most important thing is that your videographer really knows how to get the most out of the equipment they use.

How much will it cost?

‘I have a budget’ Videography is an expensive business so good quality videographers don’t come cheap. Prices can vary a lot but you should usually expect to pay at least as much as a photographer. It is also worth regarding particularly cheap quotes with suspicion as it’s likely to mean the quality will be compromised.

The editing

‘The finishing touch’ The editing is the part that brings it all together. To make sure the final production is exactly as you want it there are a few questions to go through with your videographer: • How long will the final video be? •C an you have more than one version? You might want a full version and highlights package • What title and captions will be included? • Will the DVD have a title menu? •W ill music be added? If so, can I choose my own music and what is the situation with copyrighting? Handy hint: If you are on a tighter budget you can save money by leaving the editing for a later date. Ask for your wedding to just be covered, this way you can keep the ‘raw’ footage which can be edited when you can afford it.

Video formatting

‘I want it to last’ It’s a good idea to check what format the video will be shot and supplied in. Now that high definition is becoming more and more prevalent, choosing wide screen and high definition will ensure your video keeps it quality finish as technology advances. Handy hint: It’s not a normal request, but you can ask for the master quality version of your video in the original format. This can be used for further editing or transferring to new video formats at a later date.

Our final tip

If you need to, compromise in other areas, to make sure you get the best videographer you can afford. Your wedding video will be the thing you keep with you for many years after the day!

What our experts say 1. Choose the Right Style Some wedding videographers may adopt a traditional “wedding video” approach which documents your special day whereas others may be able to provide you with a more cinematic “wedding day film”. Make sure you choose a videographer whose style you like so that you are not disappointed with the final product. 2. Are They a Member of a Professional Trade Association The wedding market is flooded with people claiming to be “Professional Videographers”, any individual with a true commitment to the industry will be a member of a Professional Trade Association such as the IOV and will adopt the policies and codes of practice of that association. 3. Business Insurance & Copyright Compliance Whether it’s music recorded during the ceremony or popular music tracks dubbed onto the finished video, all videographers must ensure that your wedding video is fully copyright protected with the correct licenses. Although not legally bound to do so, they must also have Public Liability insurance to give you complete peace of mind, be safe not sorry. Matt Kilgariff – Institute of Videography

Past tradition dictates that the responsibility of buying the wedding rings falls with the Groom, but how does anyone make that decision? Do you get matching rings, or a ring that reflects you as an individual? It’s a decision that couples should make together, after some research has been done. Here we’ve gathered all the different styles and materials that wedding rings come in so you can get your head around the options available.

Band Styles Court

Court shaped rings are the classic choice. The simple design suits the personal style of many guys, especially those who are not fond of wearing jewellery and don’t want to sport anything too over the top.

Flat

Flat bands are slightly more contemporary than the classic court style. With their squared-off sides, these bands look more sleek and modern.

Patterns

Using pattern is a great way to choose a more individual design. Modern jewellery techniques mean that you are no longer limited to just one metal, but can now mix different ones. Many designers have mixed traditional and modern metals like steel and titanium. As well as creating new and exciting options, these can be a more affordable alternative. The hottest designs from Furrer Jacot in Switzerland use precious metals with carbon.

Finishes

Most metals can be produced in a variety of finishes. Traditionally rings were polished to achieve a high shine finish, but recent trends have included a range of matt and sand-blasted styles.

Engraving

Why not make your wedding rings really individual by using engraving? Some manufacturers can even reproduce your own handwriting to spell out a personal message or design.

Gold

Gold has been the traditional choice for hundreds of years and it offers lots of style options. Gold is mixed with alloys and 9ct, 18ct and 22ct designate the mix and therefore the purity of the metal; each grade of gold will vary in price accordingly. Gold is available in different colours, the most popular being yellow and white. The ‘whiteness’ of white gold will vary according to the alloy mix and so is often rhodium plated.

Stones

In recent years, more and more wedding couples are adding a little sparkle to their wedding rings by having them stone-set. Diamonds are the most popular choice, but you can use any precious stones. Remember that you will be wearing your wedding ring every day and stone set rings are not as hard wearing as plain bands.

Platinum

Platinum is the most costly of all the metals. It is a heavy and dense white metal which is popular because it is so durable and hard wearing. That doesn’t mean that it won’t scratch though; it just won’t wear away as quickly as the other alternatives.

Palladium

As part of the Platinum family of metals, Palladium shares many of the same qualities and aesthetics. It is lighter in weight and therefore a more cost effective alternative to Platinum and has grown massively in popularity in recent years.

Titanium

Titanium is a much lighter metal known for its durability, which can make it a perfect choice for those in manual jobs. It is also hypo-allergenic. It doesn’t come with a huge price tag but make sure you chose the right size, as jewellers cannot resize titanium rings!
