Hi Girls, Welcome to issue 5 of Brides Etc. It’s hard to believe that it’s October already and that the short days and dark nights are with us once more. There’s certainly a lot to warm your heart within our pages and we do hope you like our ‘Vintage Special’. It was certainly great fun to report on one reader’s 1940’s wedding (see page 10) and to spend a day with florist Hazel Fisher at Joy Flowers as she spoke about how to get a Vintage feel using the wonderful flowers at her disposal (page 72). Continuing the vintage theme, my lovely assistant Kat put her heart and soul into finding the featured accessories on page 26 – I hope you’ll agree that she did a great job! This issue we also went behind the scenes with wedding planner Karen Lambert and one lucky Editor got to spend a day at the glorious Hanbury Manor spa (see page 61) – a perfect place to recharge your batteries if your wedding preparations are bogging you down! A DREAM COME TRUE
While the bridesmaids were shaking with nerves, Helena was fine until she saw St Mary’s church. ‘A soon as I got to church I thought ‘’Oh my God!’’ Luckily my dad grabbed my arm and said ‘’You’ll be fine’’ before leading me down the aisle to the traditional Wedding March. As I saw Steve stood by the altar all my nerves vanished. The church was packed with 60 friends and family and Steve was grinning from ear to ear. I was choked with emotion and happiness and almost lost it as I had to speak my vows and we exchanged rings – a white gold band for me and an antique 1800’s posy ring for Steve. The service really couldn’t have been any better. The weather outside was stunning and the sun poured into the church, I was surrounded by my closest loved ones and it really was a dream come true from start to finish.’
OUR LITTLE SECRET
Once the ceremony was over, the new Mr and Mrs Newman and their guests including Steve’s parents Peter and Jill who had helped finance their wedding, headed back to Steve and Helena’s home. Their paddock had been transformed with two marquees – one for the adults with a mouth-watering luxury buffet chosen by Steve, and a smaller one for the children, staffed with nannies and full of exciting things to do. When it was time for the first dance, Steve and Helena hung around looking awkward as the Jeff Short band launched into 40s classic ‘Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree’. But it was all a ruse as suddenly the couple took to the floor for their perfect, well-rehearsed Lindyhop. ‘The guests went wild’ recalls Helena. ‘They just screamed. It was so funny!’ Following the cutting of the cake with its three tiers of chocolate, carrot and vanilla sponge, the bride and groom partied into the night alongside their 120 guests before departing to the honeymoon suite at Greenwoods hotel. ‘I really couldn’t have asked for more’ says Helena of her big day. It may have taken 11 years, but it was worth the wait! Steve and I plan to go on a honeymoon sometime soon, but in the meantime I’m enjoying every moment of married life.’

Hi Kirsty, my wedding dress is 1920s in style and I’d like to follow the theme through with my make-up. The only problem I have is my eyebrows. 1920s brides had very thin, arched brows. Should I have mine removed and draw them in? Sally, Dartford
A.
Never remove your own eyebrows! In years to come you’ll wish you had left them well alone (the fuller the brow the more youthful we can look). Have them either threaded or waxed as both will enhance your natural brow shape really well. Take a picture of your wedding dress and one of your chosen hairstyle along with you to show the look you are going for. Don’t go to thin as a 1920s bride. Instead, trust that your make-up, hair and dress alone will do enough to give you the look you desire.

I’d love1950s dark eyes with fake lashes for my wedding but they irritate me! Are eyelash extensions any good? Jennifer, Harlow
A.
Yes! Eyelash extensions are single strands of synthetic fibre which are applied to individual lashes one by one, and with proper application look and feel completely natural. You can achieve many different looks from natural to glam in 45minutes - two hours. Extensions last the natural cycle of your own eyelashes( four -12 weeks). The bonding glue is waterproof so swimming, showering etc is fine. I do suggest a maintenance check every two to three weeks, which includes filling in any gaps due to loss of the lashes. Leaving them too long may mean having to have a completely new set applied. We don’t recommend using oil based mascara on extensions though you can use water-based mascara specific to eyelash extensions.
Q.
I’m planning a vintage wedding with a 1950s theme. The make-up from that era tends to be a pale face with red lips and defined eyes. Can you advise how I can get this look using today’s products? Gemma, Ashford
A.
Hello Gemma, start by picking out the right colours for your complexion. Your lipstick should be a red that works by lifting you, adding brightness and warmth to your face rather than washing you out. So for this I would advise testing a few different shades of red. Try both glossy and matte reds - this was one of the hottest trends of the ‘50s. Your foundation should be soft, matching your skin tone well, and removing any problem areas with a good mix of your foundation and concealer together. Then onto the cheeks: the apples of your cheeks should be a blush of colour, either peachy or pinky in tone, dependent on your colouring. Your eyes can be soft in colour but do remember to add a thick layer of liner - liquid works best - and end by adding lashings of mascara. You may even wish to invest in having some individual lashes added to the outside of your natural lash line for you that doe eyed effect. Big, bold and glamorous is the way to go and may I suggest heading along to your nearest MAC counter who tend to have an abundance of 50s inspired products

Recently refurbished throughout, the beautiful ceilings, pillars, pictures and Borough shields are now restored to their former glory, and a wealth of Mayoral history and regalia adds character to the building and provides stunning backdrops for photographs. The Town Hall site has been the focus of civic duties for more than 800 years. Colchester’s first Town Hall, called the Moot Hall, was built in 1160. The second Town Hall was built in 1844 and was a three-storey structure with a stone faced front. John Belcher designed the present Town Hall, which was chosen after a competition in 1897. Building work began in 1898 and the building was opened by Prime Minister the Earl of Roseberry in May 1902. The building design itself is Baroque. The 162ft Victorian tower was presented by industrialist James Paxman with a statue at the top of St Helena, Colchester’s patron saint. The Moot Hall houses a custom built organ by Norman Beard and The Old Library, originally Colchester's first town centre public library, was designed by Brightwen Binyon of Ipswich in 1894. The Council Chambers has a glorious painted ceiling showing a classical description of the 12 months of the year and the two stained glass windows depict the Roman history of the Borough. All of these stunning rooms are available for hire for your wedding. The Council Chambers is a spacious unique and memorable venue for weddings and commitment ceremonies. It holds up to 85 guests and is available for two hours between 9am and 5pm Monday to Sunday. The Moot Hall’s grandeur is balanced by its collection of historical oil paintings and ornate décor and offers an ideal setting for your ceremony or reception. The entrance doors face three stunning stained glass windows that illustrate the history of Colchester since 1066. The Moot Hall can hold 350 guests for your ceremony, 180 at a seated reception and 200 for a buffet meal. The Grand Jury Room offers a classical and ornate venue. With its civic regalia display and a collection of oil paintings, this room is especially suitable for holding welcome drinks, ceremonies and receptions. It holds 85 people for a ceremony, 50 people seated or 75 for a buffet reception. This room is spacious and light. At one end of the room is an elaborate bas-relief showing Queen Victoria at the Great Exhibition of 1851 inside the Crystal Palace in Hyde Park and at the other a large window with a stain glass depiction of the Borough coat of arms. The Old Library can hold 170 people for a ceremony, 80 for a seated reception and 100 for a buffet. Catering at Colchester Town Hall is provided by five great local catering companies offering competitively priced and imaginative menus, experienced chefs and friendly professional staff. Tell us a bit about yourself I was born in Devon. My aunt and uncle owned a bakery in Kingsand, Cornwall and I studied Bakery and Confectionery at college in Plymouth. After completing my City and Guilds certificate and gaining a distinction in Cake Design and Decoration, I worked as a cake decorator in Australia for three years learning sugar paste
art and winning awards in design and decoration. When I returned to England I joined the famous Gloriette Patisserie in Knightsbridge, London, supplying cakes to Harrods for the rich and famous. Now I run C4Cakes making cakes for celebrities and regular customers alike.’
How important is a good wedding cake? ‘Nothing is more impressive or important than a hand crafted wedding cake to make such a special event really memorable. We only use fresh, good quality ingredients and every cake is unique.’

Nick and I had known each other for quite a few years and taught ICT and Maths at the same secondary school. I’d never really looked at him in that kind of way because we work in different areas of the school, but in October half term 2006 I bumped into Nick at a local bar. We chatted briefly, during which I’d mentioned I had been asked to be my friend’s maid of honour. Soon after, back at work, he emailed me to congratulate me on my news. We e-mailed back and forth for a few months until Christmas that year when we finally got together.
It was certainly a case of the right chemistry when fellow teachers Hannah and Nick fell in love÷
AN EVENTFUL WEEKEND I had just bought myself a flat and in December 2008, as Nick and I celebrated two years together, he said he’d cook me dinner. It was an incredibly manic weekend, what with moving all my things into the flat, so I was really looking forward to just chilling out. We exchanged a few ‘anniversary’ gifts but I honestly didn’t suspect a thing when he asked me to shut my eyes and hold my hands out for my gift. When I opened my eyes Nick was on one knee with a box in his hand. Inside was a gorgeous princess cut diamond on a platinum band which he’d had made at a jewellers in Benfleet. I burst into tears! He asked if I would be his wife. Apparently I asked ‘’Are you sure?’’ which made him laugh. I later found out that Nick had already rang and asked my Dad, Neil for my hand which was lovely. The next day we went to church to see my nephew Miles in a nativity play and met my parents for a celebratory lunch.
MAKING PLANS Nick and I had an engagement party in January 2009. We hired a local bar and everyone we knew came. It was really exciting to then start planning our wedding. We decided to go for it and have a big white wedding. I was very keen to be married in church and went to lots of wedding shows and visited lots of venues, but when we saw Braxted Park it just felt right. The best thing was that the church, All Saints, was in the grounds of the Park so we could marry there and have the reception at Braxted. We booked the ceremony for 1pm on June 3rd 2010. That seemed like a lot of time to plan things, but in hindsight I wished

we’d booked a wedding planner as time flew and there was so much to organise! The next thing was sorting the caterers. Nick and I went for Sunday lunch at a restaurant called Le TalBooth and were blown away by the food. When we found out they could cater for our wedding breakfast and provide a hog roast BBQ in the evening we booked them immediately. The next thing on my list was finding the dress.
SHOP TILL YOU DROP I loved shopping for my dress so much! Every gown I tried on made me feel amazing and I had great fun with my mum Ruth, chief bridesmaid Jen and sister-in-law Emma going from shop to shop. Id almost settled on my gown but had one store left to visit. To be honest I almost cancelled my appointment but
I’m so glad I didn’t because when the proprietor saw me she said ‘I have three dresses for you and I know the third will be the one.’ She was so right. Looking at the dress on the hanger I thought ‘’This is everything I dislike about a wedding dress’’. It was a Kay Mason design in luxury ‘diamond white’ satin with wide halter neck straps and a slit on one side which revealed netting underneath over which were satin strips. At the top of the slit was a brooch on one side. The odd thing was, we all just kept staring at it. When asked to try it on I wasn’t keen, but I did and as I looked in the mirror I could feel tears welling up - along with everyone else. I just knew this was the dress for me and bought it on the spot. For my bridesmaids – Jenny and Emma plus good friends Charlotte and Jo I’d chosen 60s style knee-length shift dresses in a plummy purple organza by Kelsey Rose from Bridal Boutique in Southend. I also had two baby bridesmaids Amelia, 6 who is Nick’s brothers daughter and Remie, 15 months, my brother Dan’s daughter. They wore little white satin dresses with little butterflies on the straps. For my flowers I went to Wendy at The Flower Basket in Rochford who made me a bouquet using cream purple and green flowers. My bridesmaids carried cream and green posies.
THE BIG DAY DAWNS The night before the ceremony Nick stayed at home and had the lads round and I went home to mum and dad in LeighOn-Sea and had the girls around to watch Dirty Dancing – it was really cool. The next morning Natalie Taylor, my hair and make-up artist, arrived to put my hair in rollers. We then drove down to Braxted in my convertible to finish getting ready. It was such a beautiful day. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky. My dad, who is a keen photographer, commented that in all his years he had never seen such a clear day – it was a good omen.
TEARS OF JOY My brother Dan was acting as an usher along with Nick’s brothers Matt and Rob (who was also best man) and we had two mini ushers Luka, Matt’s son who was five and Miles, Dan’s son who was four. But it was also Dan’s job to get us all to the church in his lovely ribbon-covered car. Having safely delivered all the bridesmaids, dad and I waited nervously for him to arrive. As my dad and brother helped me into the car I looked at dad’s face – I’ve never seen him cry before but he was clearly moved, especially as Dan had found an acoustic version of my favourite Beatles’ song In My Life which he played for us. ‘’My gorgeous daughter, my incredible son’’ Dad said. He nearly set me off!
A DREAM CEREMONY On the short drive to the church we stopped on a beautiful cobbled drive so our fantastic photographer Paul Hubbard could take pictures of me dad and the bridesmaids, and then it was time to walk down the aisle. I had been worried about laughing with nerves or crying my eyes out, but seeing Nick waiting for me, I just couldn’t stop smiling. After Nick and I exchanged rings – a diamond studded platinum band for me and a plain platinum band for Nick, we left the church and headed back to Braxted for the reception with the sun still beating down and still not a cloud in the sky.
A PERFECT END TO A PERFECT DAY Our wedding breakfast, put on by Le Talbooth, was incredible. We had UÊÊÊTian of salmon, avocado and brown shrimp with smoked salmon rosette, horseradish cream, watercress salad for starter. U Rack of English lamb, herb and Dijon crumb, boulangere potatoes, ratatouille, lamb jus for main course, and Strawberry pavlova, double cream, passion fruit and raspberry sauce for dessert. After this amazing food Nick surprised me with a three tier cake on top of which perched figures of our cats Gubbins and Bodhi. We then took to the floor for our first dance to Fade, by Solu Music feat. Kimblee. Teresa Noble, a good friend, and her band performed for us and the night was just fantastic. The dance floor was packed and we had such a great time that we stayed until the last guests left well after midnight! The next morning we had breakfast on our verander along with the guests who had also stayed over including my fantastic parents and Nick’s mum and dad Keith and Barbara. It was incredible. We waited until school broke up at the end of July before we went on honeymoon to Mauritius - it was absolutely stunning.

Hazel Fisher, 50, proprietor of Joy Flowers in Harlow, and a florist for 34 years, explains how a clever choice of wedding blooms can help you create a Vintage feel on your big day… Hi Hazel how has the choice of wedding bouquets changed over the years? The biggest difference is the fact that florists can now source most flowers all year round, they don’t necessarily need to be seasonal. This wasn’t the case in the past, so for example, an Easter wedding bouquet would be made up of Arum or ‘Easter’ lillies and a winter wedding would see a lot of foliage and berries. Going right back in time, brides carried flowers picked from their gardens or the surrounding fields. In Victorian times brides carried a small posy held in front of their body over the womb area to signify fertility. Later flowers were individually wired into a moss ball which made them very heavy. The 20s and 30s saw the advent of flower baskets and buttonhole holders for grooms who would place a single gardenia or rose in them, then in the late 30s Constance Spry hit the headlines with amazing creations with a ‘waterfall’ style – the flowers high in the middle and flowing out on either side. By the time of the Queen’s wedding it was fashionable to carry bouquets over the arm and the wedding of Grace Kelly in 1956, who carried just Lilly of the valley, saw that flower becoming popular. It’s making another resurgence now, but at £2.50 a stem, with around 75 stems in a bouquet, it’s not a cheap option! What, for you, constitutes Vintage? Vintage for me equals romance, so I’d choose big roses in cream or pale pink with a dash of pale Wedgewood blue or a splash of lime green. Soft colours and a mixture of different flowers to create texture all make for a lovely bouquet. There are plenty of flowers to choose from vintage roses called ‘Old Dutch’ and also some beautiful new roses such as ‘Avalanche Sorbet’ or ‘Cherry Brandy’ – are good starting points. For a more 1950s vintage feel, wrist bracelets are coming back for the mother of the bride, for very young bridesmaids or for a maid of honour who will have to hold a bridesmaid’s hand and the bride’s bouquet.

Is there any other way that brides can carry on the vintage theme using flowers? Yes, I make some lovely table decorations using teacups or little baskets filled with flowers, or tiered plates incorporating cakes and little sprays of flowers. The nice thing about this is that everyone can take something away with them on the day. HAZEL’S ADIVCE The first thing any bride should do when choosing her wedding flowers, whether vintage, retro or modern, is to go and see a reputable florist who can offer advice and show samples. Seeing a bouquet in a book is all very well, but unless price is no object, recreating flowers this way can be extremely costly. A good florist will suggest different flowers that can look just as good at a fraction of the price. Adrian from Vintage Dreams introduces us to Lily, Rosie, Jasmine, Daisy and Dixie – five ladies who promise to get you to the church in style! Hi Adrian, your cars are lovely. How did it all begin? ‘I had a successful business as a landscape gardener building children’s play areas, but then a blood clot in my
leg in 1996 made it difficult to carry on. I decided I needed a driving job but I guess I was too old! So in 2000 I started Vintage Dreams and awarded myself a driving job. Have you always been interested in vintage cars? ‘No I dont like the difficulty in finding parts. My cars only look very old – that’s my secret ingredient. They are Vintage ‘style’ which means they can cover longer distances and ‘get me to
the church on time’. But they certainly look the part, and evoke memories of a bygone era which is what we aim for.’ Tell us about the first cars you bought ‘My first cars were American Cadillac convertibles - a 1964 blue convertible called Bluebell, followed by a 1976 convertible imported from California, which we called Primrose. Sadly Primrose caught fire when it was away for repairs, in 2002 and was a total loss. The insurance money went a long way towards paying for Rosie.” 2.

How many cars do you have now? We have Lily and Rosie in burgundy and cream and Jasmine and Daisy in midnight blue and cream. We also have a modern day Cadillac called Dixie.’

Can you tell us more about your ‘girls’? ‘Lily is a Model A Ford replica, built in 2002. I had a voting page on my website where couples chose what colour to have her painted. Burgundy and cream was the winner. Lily was so popular that I had a second car, Rosie, built in 2003 to match. Jasmine was built in 2004, and Daisy was built in 2006. These are another matching pair, in more traditional midnight blue and cream. Dixie is a 2001 Silver STS. She’s a luxury car with a very high specification and a loud exhaust! She’s handy for couples on a budget, as she’s cheaper to hire.’
What services do you offer a Bride? ‘There’s a full brief on our website called ‘What to expect on the day’ but basically we open champagne at the church if required, and put a 10p into the cork for good fortune. If there’s a colour scheme my wife puts pom poms on the cars’ door handles and bonnet front to match. The cars have CD players and walkie-talkies so that the bride can chat with her bridesmaids if they are travelling close together, and we hang a ‘just married’ board on the back which is great for photos. It also helps to attract waves from bystanders and toots from motorists. This all helps make the couple feel King and Queen for the day. We’re dreaming up new ideas all the time, so watch this space!
Why would a bride choose a vintage car and not a modern one? ‘It’s all about choice, but many brides tell me that they dreamed of their
How much does it cost to hire your cars? ‘For a local wedding Rosie and Daisy are £425, and Jasmine and Lily are £20 extra as they can carry four adults instead of two. We charge more to travel further to cover petrol. These rates are not set in stone though, and often there is good reason to charge less, or more.’ Do you drive the cars yourself? Yes, I take the wedding that’s last on the day, so I can see all the cars safely on their way first. Our drivers are respectful and wear suits and ties to match the cars’ colours, but I don’t like uniforms or vintage style dress. It worries me that a uniform exalts you to a higher level and we don’t want to be bigger than our customers.
