Hi Girls,

A warm welcome to the latest issue of your favourite bridal magazine. We hope you’re enjoying the glorious sunny weather? Here at the office we’ve managed to resist the temptation to nip out to the pub to enjoy a tall glass of something chilled as we bring you a magazine full of all that’s new and fabulous in the bridal market. From meeting lots of you at our brilliant wedding shows across Kent, Essex and Hertfordshire, we know that June and July are the months that many of you choose to tie the knot – and let’s face it, what better time to celebrate your love than under a blazing English blue sky? The fact that more and more of you are opting for weddings outdoors gave us the idea to theme this issue ‘The Great Outdoors’. So whether you’re planning a summer extravaganza for 2012 or making last minute plans for your ‘summer of love’ ceremony this year, there is a wealth of really fantastic ideas within our pages. Check out our collection of venues featuring beautiful gazebos and garden spaces (p31); classy, elegant gowns to keep you cool (p17); the best in outdoor catering (p36) and a round up of magical and romantic garden decorations to create a fairy grotto in the open air (p44). All this and to-die-for shoes; hair and beauty tips, seriously luxurious safari honeymoons under the stars and true romances in our Real Weddings pages. Don’t forget your other half either. He (and you) will love Grooms Etc at the back of the magazine. We giggled all the way through Grant’s World (p81). Who would have thought that our mild mannered designer was such a versatile man – Brides Etc will never be the same! See you next time!

Summer Dreams To celebrate the arrival of summer, Brides Etc features seven very special wedding venues. Each has a beautiful English garden or a special outdoor space such as a gazebo or an orangery where you can take your vows or hold your reception under blue skies, surrounded by nature and bathed in sunlight. We hope you enjoy them!

Valentine’s Mansion This wonderfully named 300 year-old Grade II listed grand mansion is located in a truly beautiful setting near Ilford in Essex. Nestled within tranquil gardens bursting with colour, it exudes English elegance. With lovingly restored period rooms boasting breathtaking views over the historic gardens, you can choose to hold your ceremony in the Drawing Room or Gallery and wander out as man and wife into the sunlight to enjoy your reception drinks in the grounds. Booking your wedding at Valentine’s Mansion means that you and your wedding party will be given exclusive use of the building and its incredible historic gardens which include a pretty old English walled garden, a Victorian rose garden and a kitchen garden. The grounds also boast a Long Water canal, rococo grottoes and a dovecote so your photographer will be spoilt for choice. While Valentine’s Mansion provides a wonderful setting for weddings throughout the year, it is at its most spectacular when the gardens are in full bloom in high summer. Just imagine how you and your wedding party will be able to relax and unwind on your special day in this sumptuous magical setting – perfect!

The Three Lakes Restaurant Nestled in beautiful Hertfordshire countryside, The Three Lakes Restaurant boasts exquisite views of the glorious lakes. If you are looking for a romantic English venue then why not take a look around Three Lakes? The venue provides a perfect setting for small or large weddings, from 20 – 200 guests with quality food, service and flexibility. The venue has been granted a licence to hold civil ceremonies in both the function rooms and in the purpose built gazebo outside overlooking the lakes, providing stunning backdrops for an outside spring or summer wedding. With the sun shining and a view like that, you could be in France rather than Hertfordshire. It is a unique setting that your guests won’t forget and that you will be dreaming of for years to come. The outside space allows for beautiful formal and informal photographs with plenty of places for quirky photographs such as the gazebo or overlooking the lakes. After you have enjoyed the views with your guests over a glass of champagne the wedding breakfast takes place in one of the function rooms. Brides Etc loves the flexibility of this venue, so why not have something a bit different like a BBQ or Hog Roast to take full advantage of the great outdoors?

Greenwoods Hotel Greenwoods Hotel Spa and Retreat is a beautiful 17th Century, Grade II listed manor house set in extensive landscaped gardens. Lovingly refurbished to the highest standards, it is now a highly successful hotel and wedding venue. The hotel is located in the rural village of Stock in Essex, yet the bustling towns of Chelmsford and Billericay are just a few miles away, making it easily accessible for your guests.

Whether you are looking for a small intimate service or a more formal lavish reception, Greenwoods can cater for both. Inside you will find the Library and Boardroom, two adjoining rooms that are light and airy with many original features including grand fireplaces and doors leading out to the garden. There is also the larger, more modern Millennium Suite which is in the new wing of the hotel but has been cleverly designed in keeping with the rest of the hotel. Outside is a stunning new marquee which provides the space for a reception for up to 160 people. Greenwoods Hotel has the facility for you to get married outside in the garden gazebo. At certain times of the year the gazebo is surrounded by bluebells and creates a truly magical setting for you to say your vows. The grounds certainly present a number of hidden places for you to take those all important wedding photographs including a well tended sunken garden with striking water fountains.

Turkey Mill Set in the heart of the Garden of England, in Kent’s pretty town of Maidstone, the Orangery at Turkey Mill represents and preserves the true and natural beauty of Kent itself. The stunning Garden Room is the perfect addition to the Orangery. The front of the room has doors across the width which can be fully opened, maintaining the impressive views of the Mill Barn, garden and the main bridge. The stunning glass roof lantern ensures that the room is always light and adds to the effect of the gardens reaching into the covered space, whatever the weather. The recently added Gazebo is licensed for Civil Ceremonies during the summer months (subject to weather conditions) and provides couples with another magnificent option for their special day. The venue is set beside the river Len, within nine acres of beautifully landscaped grounds including sweeping lawns, huge Wellingtonia Pines and Blue Cedars dating back over 400 years. The natural beauty of the water creates a wonderfully tranquil atmosphere as well as unforgettable scenery. Photographic opportunities are endless, at the Mill Pond with the boathouse as a stunning backdrop, in front of the tumbling waterfall or simply relaxing on the lawns. If you are searching for a venue that embraces all that the English garden has to offer, along with a wide variety of rooms and bespoke options then contact the team at Turkey Mill to see what they can do for you.

Set in an area of unspoilt natural beauty, Penshurst Place, although medieval in origin, retains the warmth and character of a much-loved family home. With all weddings held on an exclusive basis in the house, and the opportunity to have your ceremony and reception in one place, the venue prides itself in offering a personalised service, to the very highest standards. The garden at Penshurst Place is one of the most beautiful gardens in England and probably one of the oldest. The existing garden was laid out by Sir Henry Sidney in 1580 and has remained true to his design. The romantic medieval house with its mellow sandstone walls, mullioned windows and ancient doorways is surrounded by the 11 acre walled Tudor garden, which is divided into a series of garden ‘rooms’ by over one mile of yew hedging. Each garden has its own season and colour, with a mass of spring bulbs, colourful herbaceous borders and hundreds of varieties of roses around the Italian Garden, in the Union Flag Garden and in the stunning Rose Garden. Why not take your place in history by holding your ceremony and reception at Penshurst Place? The venue has played host to Royalty and inspired poets to write acclaimed romantic verse, surely this has to be a sign that your marriage will be full of romance too?!

Gaynes Park If you’re looking for a versatile venue that can offer both indoor and outdoor space that you and your guests will be talking about for months after your big day, then Gaynes Park ticks all the boxes. This historic country estate in Epping, Essex is situated at the end of a long driveway, through lush parkland, which immediately presents the venue in an impressive light. There are two barns on offer at Gaynes Park. The Gather Barn is a striking open-sided barn, which forms a grand entrance to the Mill Barn. Also available is the beautiful Orangery. This room is light and airy with oak beams, it brings the old and new together creating the perfect space for a summer wedding. On top of this the venue has the Apple Loft Honeymoon Cottage. This is available for your wedding day, meaning there is no rush and you can get ready in comfort and style. Gaynes Park is also home to a quaint English walled garden. Bursting with colour all year round it will provide you with truly special wedding photographs. It’s pretty herbaceous borders, old-fashioned roses, daffodils and established shrubs provide the foundation for an exquisite summer wedding. The children can be entertained with garden games such as giant jenga, croquet and French cricket, while you find time to mingle with your guests and take a moment to reflect on the events of the day as a newly married couple.

Spains Hall Combining the history and romance of an English country estate with modern facilities and excellent services, Spains Hall will ensure that your special day runs perfectly. You can choose to hold your ceremony at the venue or, if you are looking for a more traditional wedding, there are several local churches to choose from. The public rooms and The Stables within Spains Hall are offered to you exclusively along with use of the extensive grounds. The magnificent Elizabethan Hall can seat up to 120 guests, while the Drawing Room and Dining Room are both available for smaller ceremonies. The rooms are decorated with family antiques, paintings and mementos to create a romantic yet historic setting. The grounds at Spains Hall Estate can add a whole new dimension to your wedding. You can arrive by horse and carriage, passing the ancient cedar tree, or by helicopter landing in front of the Hall. You can have your drinks reception outside and take full advantage of the ancient rose and flower gardens. Why not take a stroll around the lawns and under the rose covered arches - what better way to reflect on the events of the day while your guests enjoy a drink or two or even a game of croquet on the lawn. You can then all retire to The Stables Terrace, protected from the summer heat by sunshades.

Don’t forget the Booze!

No reception would be complete without some mouth- watering wines to wash down the wonderful food. Phillipe Alexandre is a London based wine importer from Burgundy, France. Here he tells us just what you should be looking for when buying wine for your Big Day…

The trend has changed for wine this year due to a particularly good summer in the UK. For a wedding I strongly advise wine that’s easy to drink, light in alcohol and refreshing, dry and fruity with tropical flavours. Domaine de L’Horgelus Gascogny is a perfect blend of Colombard and Sauvignon Blanc. They also do a Rose made with 100 per cent Tannat grape strawberries, great for entrees, notably shellfish, or asparagus. If you want to serve red, Domaine de la Colombette, a Pinot Noir from Languedoc, is the perfect wine which will go with most wedding dishes such as roast beef or lamb or perhaps poussin, quail, or turkey for the adventurous. For your toast, a Classic Prosecco Spago from the Valdobiadenne area in Italy or the rose version is absolutely gorgeous – It has a rounder flavour than its white sister. Finally, I would not consider a wedding complete without a glass of Chardonnay from my home town, Burgundy. Alain Besson does a Petit-Chablis Antique. I’ve known this old man over 20 years and his wine is a winner!

Phillipes tips on:

Choosing Wine Red

Best For: Meat courses - beef, lamb, pork, chicken and game. Go for fruity with a hint of oak. Medium bodied is better as it will suit most guests’ palettes. Europe do wonderful reds (Bordeaux from France, Ribera del Duero from Spain and Sangiovese del Umbria fro Italy) but don’t over look New World wines. Argentina, Chile and Brazil produce some very good wines too.

Best For: Lighter courses, and with the heat of the summer will add a refreshing chill to all courses. Gavi is sensational with crisp salad, and white fish. Something with a bit of character such as Gavi from Piemonte, Chablis Burgundy from France or Albarino Galicia from Spain are perfect.

wines se of six a c a in c an w e. y reader y Philipp One luck onally chosen b o de tails t pers nd your e s k ly ,u p o Sim tc.c bridese Julie@

Best For: Starters and lighter main courses. Very good with salmon, and some of the meatier white fish and anything grilled. California and Australia both produce Blush wines that are very drinkable and there are some surprisingly good rose Merlots from Chile.

Low budget sparkling Prosecco from Italy is great. If money is no object look at grand Cru Classic Vintages but don’t be surprised by the price, or my personal favourite, Krug….the quality is evident from the wine, it has a fullness of flavour and in Vintage form is quite simply sublime.

Blank Canvas

Hold your reception under canvas in a magical marquee, a unique ‘hat’ or a trendy tipi dressed by a professional. With so many amazing marquee dressers out there, your venue really is a blank canvas and it’s possible to create practically any theme. Here are a few of our favourites. Have fun!

Turkish Delight

Stunning Tents

Look to the East for a truly unique wedding reception. With rich sumptuous colours, ottoman style seating, ornaments, palm trees and pouffs, once through the doors of your marquee or Bedouin tent, your guests will be entering another world. You could also try an Indian themed tent with mirrored ceilings, lush furniture and luxurious embroidery. (

Eye catching structures such as incredible tipis and amazing ‘hats’ will impress and stun your guests, and with a wealth of design interiors to choose from you can let your imagination run wild! For up to 100 guests try a pair of Giant Hats (so named because of their shape) or a single tipi which seats up to 132. The beauty is that hats and tipis can be linked together, so you may want to have one as your food and entertainment area and a smaller one (called a Kungsörnen) as a chill-out area. For huge receptions with 200 or more guests, think about four giant hats or more. Inside, the world is your oyster. (

Ask the experts

James Robinson from Wedding Creative answers your questions Why would I choose a professional venue dresser? Dressers have a wide range of experience and ideas so they can bring all of this expertise to each function they produce. The cost of hiring items is significantly less than having to buy them yourself, and more importantly employing a company means one less thing for you to worry about on the day.

21st Century Chic

Create a sparkling sky; dramatic backdrops; a stunning dancefloor or an uber trendy space age setting using drapes and lighting. Dress this up with unique items of furniture, cool props and decorative items. (

What are the main considerations when dressing a room? It’s important to think about how each area of your venue will be used at different times throughout the day. For example, the room where your ceremony took place could later be used for your evening party, so two different looks would be required. It’s also good to make sure people will be comfortable. If you have lots of additional evening guests coming, for example, then additional seating like sofas and coffee tables would be a good idea.

Is a colour scheme recommended? Having a colour scheme is a good way to ensure a unified look for your whole wedding. The colour of choice is usually determined by the colour of the bridesmaids’ dresses. This colour, and shades of it, can be translated to as many areas as you wish. Drapes, table settings and lighting can all be used to tie in. What are the current trends? This years ‘in’ colour is deep purple. Crystal is also a favourite look at the moment, from tiny table crystals up to huge crystal chandeliers.

Behind the

Hi ladies, why is Hanbury Manor perfect for a traditional English wedding? L: ‘Hanbury combines the old with the new. It’s 16th Century and the Oak Hall, Drawing Room and Poles Hall are full of history. Then we have Garden Court and the Summerhouse which provide a more modern setting.’ Is there a local church for couples who want a religious wedding followed by a reception at Hanbury? J: ‘There is a church in Thundridge and others in Ware, about 10 minutes away. Couples who don’t live locally will need to contact the church directly to see if the Vicar is willing to marry them as couples do need to live in the parish or be on the electoral roll. Don’t forget though that Poles Hall is a converted chapel and licensed for civil marriages.’ What is particularly great about Hanbury in the summer? L: ’The walled gardens provide a stunning setting for a drinks reception with Pimms served on the lawn and croquet and games in the walled gardens to keep guests entertained throughout the day.’ J: ‘Hanbury’s outside space is like having another room and you can do many different things for the evening reception. BBQ’s are a popular idea.’ What do you most enjoy about your job? L: ‘Seeing the most important day of people’s lives come together, sometimes over a year, sometimes as late as eight weeks before.’ J: ‘I love being part of the build up of a couple’s wedding and seeing their happiness on the day when it all goes perfectly.’ What exactly does your job entail? L: ‘We do initial show rounds of the hotel to prospective brides and grooms, organise menu and wine tastings, confirm weddings and hold final detail meetings. We are basically here to help in any way we can between booking and the actual wedding day.’ What’s the craziest thing you have been asked to do? L: ‘I was asked if an eagle could fly the couple’s wedding rings down the aisle. I have also had a groom turn up on a white horse!’ What’s the secret of a good wedding planner? L: ‘Having a real passion for weddings, and understanding that the little things matter more than the big things sometimes.’ J: ‘Good organisational skills and a good memory - all brides like to feel special - so remembering who they are and when their wedding will take place is essential in making them feel unique.’

Planning a wedding is a huge task, even for the most organised of people. That’s why many bridesto-be hire specialists to help. Jenny Wilkinson and Louise Felstead, wedding co-ordinators at Hanbury Manor tell us just what it’s like to be involved in this most special of occasions…

A Day in the life

of Hanbury Manor

By Charlotte Quantick, Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator ‘It’s an early start for Hanbury Manor with preparations for the day underway. Breakfast is being served while Poles Hall is dressed elegantly in silver sashes, awaiting its guests to arrive. A bride is awoken by tranquil birdsong in the historic manor house, while the groom, awake in another room, is sipping his coffee and reading the newspaper. The bride phones the Bridal Concierge to let her know she is eager to get ready. Feeling relaxed after yesterday’s massage, it’s time for her make-up and hair to be done and the last chance for a gossip with friends to ease her pre-wedding nerves. The Bridal Concierge asks whether she needs any help before going to add the finishing touches to Poles Hall. Meanwhile, the groom is enjoying a massage and manicure in the spa. The photographer arrives as the make-up artist adds her finishing touches, ready for pre-wedding pictures. Soon the guests are arriving. When all are seated in Poles Hall, the music begins, alerting the guests to the bride’s arrival. Following the service the newlyweds retire to the beautiful gardens for photographs while drinks are served to the wedding party. Meanwhile, the stoves in the kitchen are fired up and the chefs get busy creating their culinary masterpieces for the hungry guests. The wedding breakfast is served in the Thundridge Room and everyone is happy to finally relax - except for the Best Man who sips champagne to calm his nerves before his speech. The evening’s entertainment takes place in Poles Hall where guests feast on canapés while the music commences. Soon enough emotions are running high as the first dance evokes romance and sets the scene for many happy years to come.’

When you’ve spent months stressing over your wedding and ensuring that everything is perfect, it follows that your honeymoon should be a time of relaxation, peace and luxury. So when only the very best will do, a bespoke trip as provided by The Chic Collection will have your friends green with envy! South Africa Chic is part of The Chic Collection, a global series of guides featuring the world’s most alluring hotels. Brides Etc spoke to Jo Klofta, who told us more about the company’s incredible South African locations.

South African splendour

Molori, Madikwe Game Reserve There are few lodges in the world that can match the luxury of Molori. Combining local design and décor with International standards, this lodge offers the ultimate in service and luxury- from infinity pools, fully retractable floor-to-ceiling glass doors, private lounges, dining areas and glamorous bathrooms. Each suite also has a telescope, Bose iPod system, espresso machine and wireless Internet.

Singita Lebombo Lodge, Kruger National Park Lebombo Lodge on the eastern boundary of the Kruger National Park is the pinnacle of safari chic. Flawless service, gourmet cuisine and cool, contemporary interiors within glass boxes perched on stilts against a sheer cliff-face. The lodge overlooks the N’wanetsi River and facilities include a wine cellar, spa and gym, plus Dermalogica products and iPods in the suites.

Gorah Elephant Camp, Addo area, Eastern Cape Evoking nostalgia for the great African safaris of yesteryear, Gorah Elephant Camp is a tented lodge located in the heart of the Addo Elephant National Park. Gorah was declared a conservation area in 1931 to protect the remaining 11 elephants in the area from hunting. Today, the park has the densest population of elephants in the world! Romantic tents are set beneath thatched canopies with sweeping views of the Savannah plains, and an original Colonial manor house serves as the communal area, overlooking a waterhole where animals gather day and night.

Thanda Private Game Reserve, Hluhluwe KwaZulu-Natal Meaning ‘love’ in Zulu, Thanda’s close proximity to the Indian Ocean makes it an ideal ‘beach and bush’ destination and the lodge is able to arrange a number of ocean-based excursions including diving and snorkelling. This ‘Big Five’ game reserve is home to lions, wild dog and black rhino. Stay in a stunning villa complex with your own private plunge pool or a colonial-chic tented camp with four poster beds and outdoor showers. Tel: 0845 604 4553 www.facebook/southafricachic

Find magic in Kenya’s Mara Not everyones idea of a dream honeymoon is lying on a golden beach; some people like to be more active. But what if you could have the best of both worlds? Brides Etc have embraced the great outdoors in this issue, so we thought we would continue this theme by taking a look at safaris which combine luxury with some impressive sight-seeing. Our chosen locations will certainly provide more interesting honeymoon photos than you sitting on a beach sipping yet another cocktail. We hope you enjoy this selection… Beautifully sited on the edge of the famous Maasai Mara in the Bushtops conservation area, a 45-minute flight from Nairobi airport and then a 20 minute drive from the airstrip, your safari base is raised above the Kenyan plains and offers spectacular views. The Mara Bushtops combine the tranquillity of a luxurious camp with an incredible location.

etc BRIDES LOVES …the opportunity to get up close and see Kenya’s famous Masai Warriors, a seminomadic tribe who have lived in East Africa for hundreds of years. The Masai are very friendly people who still wear their distinctive tribal dress and practice age old customs such as a ‘jumping dance’. The Masai continue to hunt and herd cattle on the edge of the Masai Mara National Reserve and are a very common sight.

Accommodation Bushtops features 12 tents which are amongst the biggest in East Africa. Each has a large comfortable bed, a deck with a romantic sunken bath, a wildlifewatching telescope and indoor and outdoor showers. Facilities in the camp area include a swimming pool and sundeck, library, lounge and bar, a dining room with veranda and camp fire area overlooking the watering hole which animals visit day and night. Included in the holiday are two game drives each day. Birdwatching, balloon safaris, bush walks and picnics are also available at extra cost.

’S EDITOR CHOICE Bushtops is a wonderful base from which to enjoy your safari adventure, but what I most like is the opportunity to enjoy a little romance at the end of a busy day (after all this is your honeymoon!) so retire to your private terrace hot tub as dusk begins to settle across the Kenyan landscape and relax with a crisply chilled glass of Cape Chardonnay. A perfect end to a perfect day!

Stunning Sri Lanka If you want to see animals in the daytime, but return to the comfort of a hotel in the evening, then maybe a guided tour is for you. This type of safari is a real treat for both animal lovers and sightseeing fanatics alike; it’s also great value for money … If Sri Lanka is on your wish list of places to visit, then you can’t go wrong with a seven night guided tour which allows you to see the wildlife and the beautiful scenery of the country - a brilliant introduction to a new and exciting country. A treat for animal lovers, you will get the chance to see elephants, sambhur, bear, monkeys and even the elusive leopard! The tour gives you the option of staying in a variety of three and four star hotels which give you a real feel for the country and its culture, but it’s the sights you will see, courtesy of an experienced guide, which makes this tour so special.

Perfect Memories Choosing a Sri Lankan tour means that every day will be filled with new and amazing sights. You can look forward to a visit to Nuwara Eliya, 6,000 feet above sea level, a brief stop at beautiful St Clair’s and Devon waterfalls, a picnic breakfast at the scenic Horton Plains; a guided walk to ‘World’s End’ within the Sri Lankan National Park to admire the beautiful views and wildlife, a jeep safari through the Yala National Park to see wild elephants, spotted deer, jackal, sloth bear and – if you’re lucky – the incredible leopard. There’s also a jeep safari of the Udawalawe National Park which is famous for its large herds of elephants.

Why not extend your holiday to the Maldives or Sri Lanka Beach?

Indian idyll

On the trail of the elusive Tiger! If you want to learn about the history, culture and wildlife of India, then you should consider a small escorted tour. Accompanied by a local expert and staying in a variety of unique hotels, you will be in a small group as you enjoy a number of game drives on the trail of the elusive tiger, plus the chance to spot other animals such as leopards, crocodiles, jackal, mongoose and sloth bear in India’s most beautiful National parks. As a bonus you will also get to see some breathtaking sights such as the Taj Mahal and the ‘Pink City’of Jaipur with its Royal Observatory and Maharajah’s Palace – stunning sights that you will never forget and which will make this a truly memorable trip.

It happened to me! Local Essex boy Simon Hopkins experienced an Indian Safari. Here is what he thought of his trip of a lifetime… India is an amazing country. The people are so friendly and welcoming. My favourite experience was visiting the Taj Mahal. It was like a postcard with clear blue skies and the striking white marble against it. If you do go on a game drive make sure you wrap up warm as it can be very cold first thing in the morning. I would highly recommend India for a honeymoon trip as it combines adventure, culture and great food! For details of Indian and Sri Lankan tours, Tel Kuoni on: 01306 747 008 or log onto

“Speeches” Welcome to your worst nightmare – it’s time to make your wedding speech! Picture the scene: you are stood up in front of more than 100 people and about to make a speech about the wonderful woman you have just married. Your hands sweat and you feel the heat rise in your cheeks. You can feel the tension and people begin to cough as the seconds tick into endless, silent minutes and you want to leg it. The paper in front of you with your notes on is soggy as you twist it in your fingers. What happens next is down to you. You can either stumble through a hurried few words or you can remember this feature and have your words of wisdom talked about for years to come…

FREE OFFER for Brides Etc readers

Diane is happy to help with tips for calming your pre-speech nerves. She is offering Brides Etc readers this service free via e-mail. Contact her on: If you would like to make an appointment to see her in person then please email to arrange an appointment.

Be prepared!

The secret of a great speech is confidence, timing and humour. As a groom you shouldn’t be under pressure to be side-splittingly funny (leave that to your Best Man), but you must be polite and must remember to thank everyone (a list from the Mrs. would be a good tip – you don’t want to be hauled over the coals for forgetting anyone). Then again, you don’t want to bore everyone, so while it’s ok for your best man to have your audience cracking up, if your family or your in-laws are straight-laced, a story about pranks involving late night trips to the potting shed with your new wife will not go down well. So learn about your audience first. Decide whether your approach should be friendly, formal, or slightly saucy. Plan your speech, perfect it and then practice, practice, practice!

Follow the format

Speeches should always follow a format, remember back in school when your English teacher told you that stories should always have a beginning, middle and end? It’s the same with a groom’s speech. The following format works, so if in doubt, stick to it.

3 Talk about you and the bride

Start out with a good joke. If the father of the Bride or the Best Man spoke before you, maybe make fun of his speech a bit but don’t be too rude. Thank both sets of parents for the lovely reception and thank your guests for coming.

Share a funny story that shows the bond you share. Maybe mention how you met and highlight her good qualities.

Inspirational sayings

Include something inspirational but not too tacky. You could say something along the lines of: ‘I couldn’t imagine a better woman to share my life with.’

Toast the future

A Groom’s speech is incomplete without a wedding toast, so, make a toast to ‘A happy future’

Compliment the bride

Tell her how beautiful she looks and how lucky you are to have found her.

Keep it short and sweet

To deliver a great speech, practice over and over again, but don’t go on too long. As soon as you see someone yawning, stop! Remember to have fun, but at the same time to be polite and considerate of everyone’s feelings.

Going formal

For traditional weddings, the usual wedding attire for men is a morning or lounge suit – not the best choice in the summer unless you want to risk wilting in the heat and fainting at your bride’s feet! You can still look formal by choosing a lightweight suit, perhaps in a summer colour such as stone, white or ivory (we like these selections from John Lewis below), or a more traditional navy, black or grey suit with a smart wing collar shirt but without a stifling waistcoat, tie or cravat.

Editors Pick

I love this limited edition, A*Men Pure Havane from Thierry Mugler. With its husky, masculine scent it will have you smelling perfect on your wedding day. Visit to find your local stockist.

Embracing the casual look

For a really casual or beach wedding, you could opt for a casual shirt and trousers. Certainly a cheap option but not one your bride may appreciate. For those trendsetters amongst you, cropped linen trousers with matching jacket, smart T-shirt all in dazzling white and bare feet would look great in the Caribbean but not so wonderful back at home. You could still rock the white linen look in the UK, but team this with good, matching shoes and shirt with perhaps a pastel tie and buttonhole to add a bit of colour.

Finishing Touches

Complete your style with these smart yet casual shoes from Levi’s. Classic One £100

Our Experts Say...

For summer weddings we recommend the classic three piece morning suit in a light weight mohair mix or a up to the minute lounge suit in a similar fabric with or without a waist coat would be a good choice. This option is perfect for a hot summer’s day. Stick to classic colours such as black, navy, or silver grey. For that continental wedding maybe beige linen, with a coloured shirt (worn open collar) or classic Prince Edward style, two or three piece in stone or pure white. Popular colours for accessories will be simple ivory patterns, pale pinks and blues. As long as you follow the rule of subtle shades such as mint, biscuit and aqua when accessorising this summer you will be on the right track. Coles, Formal Suit Hire for Men 01992 572426
