There’s lots to juggle during the wedding planning process—and if you’re anything like I was when I was planning my wedding, your growing “to-do” list might be freaking

you out a little bit right now. Fortunately, the cold (and sometimes boring) days of winter are the perfect time to cross things off your list. Without the summer sunshine calling your name, you can put on your comfy pants, watch some bad TV, and get going on some of your more time-consuming tasks, like constructing your guest list, making a seating plan, or researching airfares for your honeymoon.

This “downtime” is also the perfect opportunity to focus on mentally preparing yourself for the big day. While your wedding is inarguably one of the happiest and most exciting moments of your life, the planning process can also bring on some unwanted stress. The pressure to get every detail perfect—including your appearance—can take its toll on even the most confident to-be-wed.

After having a baby a year before my wedding, I felt compelled to drop my “baby chub” as quickly as possible in order to look my best on my wedding day.

My fixation quickly turned into a distraction, and I found myself struggling to enjoy the excitement of my upcoming celebration.

In the end, my wedding was perfect and I felt beautiful—my “baby chub” concerns melted away. The worrying turned out to be a complete waste of time!

From that day forward, your wedding bands are the outward sign of your commitment to one another, which makes choosing the right ones all the more important. For more than twenty-five years, Maria Buduo has been educating couples on everything from the four “Cs” of diamonds (color, cut, clarity, and carat) to choosing the best metals to match their lifestyles.

Over the decades, Maria and her staff at Maria’s Fine Jewelry in Worcester, Massachusetts have seen trends come and go while offering personal care to each customer.

Understanding that engagement rings and wedding bands are a significant investment, Maria helps each couple find pieces to suit both their budget and their taste. We talked with Maria, who offered practical advice for finding the perfect “I do” accessory.

q: What are some recent trends in wedding jewelry?

a:

We’re seeing all sizes of diamonds.

Some couples lately are more focused on the mounting and not just the size of the stone . . .

Many women are looking for rings with an antique look, but the plain Tiffany setting is still very popular.

For the engagement ring, some couples come in together, but sometimes it’s just the man. Some women send texts with pictures to help them pick the right one—a lot of men are worried about getting the setting wrong.

Men are doing a lot of alternative metal wedding bands, including titanium and tungsten. Some are still doing the traditional gold; not many are doing platinum. I just got a line of gorgeous alternative metals!

q:

Of a diamond’s four “Cs,” is color, cut, clarity, or carat the most important?

a:

Cut. A diamond is a prism, and if it’s heavily included—no matter how big it is— it’s not going to shine. That’s something that is not going to change. Until they come to me, they think clarity is most important.

People are selling them on color and not size.

I had a customer that thought they got a real good deal. The diamond had good color and clarity, but not a good cut. If it doesn’t have good proportions, it’s just not going to shine.

I educate [my customers] . . . I’m a mom and pop and store, right here in Worcester.

I’m in the community and I see these people . . . My customers of thirty years still come to me, and their children come to me—I had to have done something right!

q:

What are some common mistakes people make when buying their wedding bands?

on flowers and couldn’t afford a wedding band. Most of the brides getting married next year, I won’t hear from them until next summer. I try to educate and explain to them that wedding band is something that should be bought early on.

a:

Brides typically want their wedding band to 100% match their engagement ring.

Men go out and buy this expensive engagement ring, and so many rings don’t have a matching band—they don’t think to ask if there is such a thing. When there isn’t a matching band and you want the two to match, you’ll need a cad design—a custom design—which has labor costs, so were talking an extra $500 at least. From the beginning of buying the diamond, people should be thinking about that.

q:

When should couples plan to buy their wedding bands?

a:

I try to explain to them that this is the only thing from your wedding you are going to have forever. The flowers, the dress—it is all important, but when all is said and done, this is all you have. When it comes to the wedding band, I tell them to buy that first.

Ellen and Glenn May 5, 2013 – Bermuda

Their Story Ellen Fay and Glenn Corliss got “unofficially” engaged on a January night in 2012. “We were on our way to dinner and a movie, we were talking about getting married, so to make it official [Glenn] pulled over to the side of the highway and proposed,” Ellen reminisces. Glenn made things a little more “official” on May 5, 2012 (exactly one year before their wedding date) at the Chandler Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island.

“There was champagne and roses in our room upon our arrival and a hot tub outside our room overlooking a private garden . . . he did good.”

Planning The couple’s wedding date—May 5, 2013—was a bit of a numbers game, decided based on some mystical mathematics. “My birthday is June 5, Glenn’s is November 5, which makes me five months older, and to boot, he proposed five months after we met,” Ellen explains. “So that date, as silly as it sounds, was a numbers thing.”

Ellen and Glenn, who both hail from Massachusetts, opted for a destination wedding at The Reefs Hotel in Bermuda, motivated by their mutual love for the locale and Ellen’s fond memories of many a childhood vacation spent there.

“Everything from start to finish was just perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”

“I took Glenn to Bermuda for his birthday in November of 2011, we loved it so much we went back for Christmas and New Year’s,” says Ellen. “We knew Bermuda was where we had to get married.”

Believe it or not, planning their destination affair was a breeze for Ellen, since she took full advantage of the venue’s fullservice wedding planner. “It was extremely easy for me,” she says. “All I had to do was fly down in October (poor me) to meet with the photographer, DJ, florist, minister, and, most important, the chef. Glenn was so easy-going he really didn’t care about planning. His only suggestion was a rum swizzle toast in place of champagne.”

Ellen stresses the importance of working with a professional when planning a destination wedding. “Without the help of [wedding planner] Kathleen Dodwell, none of this would have happened,” she says. “She was amazing . . . we must have exchanged over 100 e-mails from start to finish, she was very patient with me . . . Anyone reading this or planning a wedding in Bermuda, trust me when I say, Kathleen should be your first and only phone call or e-mail, she will do the rest!”

Details Staying true to the natural beauty of their locale, Ellen and Glenn decided on a beach

motif. Ellen gushes about the details of the tropical soiree: “What I loved was my place cards/favors. I had little Adirondack frames with the guest names and the name of their tables . . . the frames sat in a ‘sand box’ filled with sand from the beach. Each guest frame corresponded to a framed photo that sat on each table and displayed a picture of a notable Bermuda landmark.”

Adorning each table were vases of tropical flowers and sand- and shell-filled hurricane lamps that glowed with candlelight. Soft lighting led the way from the beach to the reception, where sheer curtains hung from the ceiling, illuminated by white Christmas lights.

Out of all of the details of the day, Ellen’s most memorable was saying, “I do” in front of her favorite people. “[I loved] being able to share the day with our family and friends.

Of course, not everyone could make it down to Bermuda, but those family and friends that could not be with us were in our hearts and minds that day,” she says. “We had amazing weather and everything from start to finish was just perfect. I wouldn’t have changed a thing . . . Everyone who attended our wedding said it was the best wedding and best vacation ever. That means the world to me.”

Advice “The best advice I would give was given to me by my husband,” says Ellen. “Every hour or so, take a step back, go into a corner of the room and just look around and take mental notes in your head of all your family and friends and what they are doing. The day comes and goes so fast and you want to remember everything. I took that advice and it was the best advice I could give. I remember everything!”

Joanna and Charles August 27, 2011 – Lenox, MA

Their Story Even though Joanna James and Charles Moschos met under somber circumstances, their story is nothing short of delightful. After a very brief meeting at a funeral, the two happened upon each other at a party a few years later. “Although I immediately was attracted to Charles and was intrigued by him, I didn’t even think he remembered meeting me,” says Joanna. “Come to find out years later, not only did he remember that was our first meeting, but he also remembered the black-and-white polka-dot dress I wore.”

Eight years after their reunion at the party, Joanna and Charles began to feel the heat from their parents, who were eager to hear wedding bells. Charles’s mother, Mary, really turned it up one night

at dinner with the couple when she turned to Joanna and asked, “So why aren’t you both married yet?” In response, Charles proposed to Joanna with an onion ring, right then and there. “Although Charles did it as a joke not expecting me to take it serious, I said ‘yes’ and Mary and I played it out like we really did get engaged,” Joanna muses. “The whole bar was looking at us like, ‘did they really just get engaged with an onion ring?’ The next day we woke up a little confused by it all but had a ball pretending. Within the month, however, when Charles and I were on a business trip in New York City, one day when we were going to Central Park . . . he pulled me aside on the grass and asked me to marry him.”

Planning Planning was a team effort between Joanna and her mother, Val. “Since my mother owns Val’s Restaurant and Function Hall I completely entrusted everything with her,” says Joanna. “I completely enjoyed planning my wedding because I got to do it with my mother and every detail was so meaningful.” Charles’s input was just as valuable, however. “He cared about the place, music, food, and ambience. He let us do our thing, but definitely wanted to feel included in the decisions.”

With dreams of a truly elegant affair dancing in their heads, Joanna and Charles chose to get married at the historic Elm Court Estate, a Vanderbilt estate located in Lenox, Massachusetts. “We chose the Elm Court Estate because we could rent the estate for the whole weekend and stay there with our family and friends, while being able to custom tailor every detail of the wedding,” says Joanna.

Details “Since we got married in a Vanderbilt estate . . . we wanted to carry a theme of the classic gilded era with French accents, yet combined with an emphasis on nature and the arts and culture of the Berkshires,” says Joanna of the wedding motif. Champagne satin linens with organza overlays and crystal candelabras adorned the tables and were accompanied by centerpieces filled with white eggshell roses, Picasso calla lilies, dark eggplant calla lilies, snow on the mountain, and dusty miller silver lace. Candles cast a warm light over the entire space.

“We really wanted to emphasize the arts throughout our wedding,” says Joanna, so she and Charles infused visual arts, music, and dance elements into their ceremony and reception. “Rather than have table numbers, we used artistic creations that inspired love, taking a picture of that example and framing it for each table. Advice

Joanna’s biggest piece of advice to couples who are in the midst of wedding planning is to keep your ultimate goal in mind. “Just go with the flow,” she says, “and don’t let any situation prevent you from staying focused on the big picture, which is this is your day with the love of your life to enjoy and revel in.” Not even hurricane Irene— which blew into town just in time for the wedding—could knock Joanna off track: “I hardly remember that part. You spend the year prior planning, so when the actual day arrives, whatever happens, just go with it and enjoy.”

F

inding the perfect dress is usually the foremost

thought in a bride’s mind once that engagement ring is securely on her finger. The hunt for a gorgeous wedding gown is viewed as an event; a single moment of looking in the mirror and finding exactly what you’ve been searching for.

and modern-day barely-there lace thongs. Bridal gurus like David Tutera and Randy Fenoli almost never mention the unmentionables on their hit television shows, so lingerie for the big day tends to be the last item on the to-do list, both in budget and importance.

Going Backless

Smooth and Support When it comes to what bra should be paired with your gown, the possibilities are virtually endless. To break it down, it is easiest to start by considering your gown’s bodice. Laurie Papi, of Ruth’s Lingerie in Cranston, Rhode Island illuminates some of the options available. Ruth’s is a specialty shop that provides a stunning array of bras for all shapes and sizes. “We carry a lot of plus-size long-line bras in addition to the classic 32-38 A-D,” says Papi. “For the strapless bras we carry up to F, and in traditional strapped bras we carry sizes M and N. People are shocked

sometimes.” The long-line bra, ranging in price from $50 to $60, is the modern corset, but don’t expect to see the same kind of results that Scarlett O’Hara achieved with her boning and laces. The function of the longline bra is to smooth the waist and support the bust. Strapless gowns, and even some dresses that feature sleeves, usually require the help of a piece like this to make sure that everything is in its proper place; your dress will fit better and you will feel more secure— no adjusting every five minutes throughout your reception.

For a low-backed gown, don’t feel like you have to go wild and free. “For brides whose gowns have a low back, we carry the Va Bien Carnival line,” says Papi. “And for dresses that are totally backless, we have the Strapless Angel, a stick-on bra.” Stick-on bras are totally reusable and super practical for girls with smaller busts. If you think that option isn’t for you, newly married Erin Olson from Johnston, Rhode Island, shared her secret to the perfect fit of her gown. “Luckily I didn’t need undergarments, the dress fit well without an additional slip or bra,” says Olson. “I had cups sewn directly into the dress.” She paired this solution with rhinestone bride panties from Victoria’s Secret for a pretty and practical day-of ensemble.

Shaping Up Another alternative is combining a bandeau bra with a body shaper, something that might work particularly well for a sheath dress. Several brands, such as Spanx and Body Wraps, are available at Ruth’s and other retailers.

This particular kind of shapewear comes in many styles, from high-waisted shorts to full legs, and some brands even offer a more traditional skirt slip, allowing you to be able to pick and choose what will work best for your body and your dress. One drawback to

these options, though, is that they are limited in design and color. “Brides ask if we have anything pretty for sale, but mostly we have solid, high-quality undergarments in practical colors like white and nude,” Papi says.

For pretty, another New England bride, Katie Lee Young, skipped right from the wedding day to the wedding night. “I picked out two outfits from Victoria’s Secret. The first was very fun and sexy, but the second set I purchased was comfortable and practical for lounging on the honeymoon,” Young says.

The final undergarment that might make an appearance beneath your layers of silk and satin is a petticoat. Not every bride will have to deal with a specialty item like this, but they shouldn’t be immediately ruled out either. The purpose of a petticoat, which usually consists of a lining, smooth top piece, and several pieces of crinoline, is to give the skirt of a gown the shape that the style demands. Bridal retailers like David’s Bridal and Alfred Angelo are the go-to stores for these dramatic pieces of shapewear, and consultants are always available to advise what style will best suit your dress, whether it be a mermaid or a ball gown. Once more, don’t expect your petticoat to give your dress the same look as Scarlett O’Hara’s five-foot circle of bell-like perfection. The only way to accomplish that feat is with a hoop skirt.

No matter what dress you have, what fabric it is made from, or where your wedding will take place, the undergarments you choose are just one more crucial step to looking your best when you say, “I do.”

Don’t push them down the to-do list or cut them out of the budget; you will need them for your fittings. Set aside the time and money required for keeping this step stress free, and if you want to set your bra on fire afterwards, I won’t tell.

What you should know about wearing an heirloom dress.

s far back as I can remember, I knew I would wear my grandmother’s dress,” recalls Jennifer Szlosek Chow. Her countless hours poring over old photos of her grandmother and mother wearing the dress led to a teenage fascination with classic movies and a love of vintage clothing. So when it came time for her to choose a dress for her May 2010 wedding, Jennifer’s decision to wear her grandmother’s 1941 floor-length, satin, V-necked, lace-trimmed gown just “felt right.”

Wearing an heirloom gown is a romantic gesture; a nod to your past and a lovely way to honor your traditions. But, “unless the gown is in very good condition and is a perfect fit—which is rare— color restoration and alterations will probably cost as much as a new gown,” says Sally Lorensen Conant, Ph.D., President of Orange Res-

toration Labs. The sum total for cleaning and alteration ($350 and $250, respectively) of Jennifer’s gown were below average. “Costs can vary greatly,” Conant continues, “depending upon the age of the gown, condition of the fabric, and alterations.”

No matter what state your dress is in, “Bridal shops can suggest cleaning specialists and seamstresses,” Conant adds. A Web search will invariably lead to the Association of Wedding Gown Specialists, where you can read reviews and request references. These certified professionals provide free written estimates, do fabric testing, and determine whether your garment can withstand restoration. In most cases, stains and discolorations can be removed and pressed; seams and gussets inserted; and holes, delicate lace, and intricate beadwork skillfully repaired.

hensive antique wedding gown exhibit for the Cohasset Historical Society. “We had extraordinary success bringing these treasures back to life! The memories and emotional factor that accompanies these dresses are remarkable.”

“I’ve done about ten gowns this past two years by three generations,” says Elton Crepso, Dependable Cleaners’ current Bridal and Restoration Specialist. “Often, the bride’s name is sewn or marked inside the hem after every wedding.” Crepso’s team members attend monthly training classes in order to stay current. “We restore about eighty gowns a year, with June through September being the busiest period,” he reports. “Brides coming in to any one of our sixteen locations should allow at least two months, with rush orders increasing total costs.”

Cheryl Pace’s heirloom train boasts a Royal lineage, and her daughter Aubrie continued the tradition by wearing it in her October 2013 wedding. “Our family is honored that Aubrie [is] the fifth generation to wear our fifteen-foot court train made of satin and hand embroidered with silk and pearls,” she shares. This 100-year-old train was first worn to Court in Vienna in 1913 by Pace’s great-grandmother, then by her grandmother in 1921, followed by her mother in 1943, her sister in 1967, and by Pace herself in 1979. Modern Trousseau of Connecticut helped design a modern lace and satin dress that incorporated the historic court train for Aubrie’s Rhode Island wedding. Pace was thrilled, as “Everyone who has seen and held this train in has been in awe of its beauty, condition, and age.”

If wearing an heirloom gown isn’t possible, then Conant suggests honoring a family member by wearing her veil. Similarly, a piece of estate jewelry, vintage gloves, or embroidered trim can beautifully accent your wedding ensemble; creating new memories that will stand the test of time.

Oheka Castle, Huntington, New York From the moment Angelica Arce and Matthew Siniscalchi drove up the majestic allée of trees to Oheka Castle, they were wowed.

“What first got us was that the entrance was just so grand,” says Angelica, who grew up in Connecticut. “We fell in love with the place and liked how they treated us from the moment we met with them.”

Lovingly restored to its Gilded Age splendor by owner Gary Melius, who often mingles with his guests, Oheka Castle would easily fit into the Loire Valley with its statue-studded Versailles-style gardens, complete with fountains and an intimate gazebo. Set on a hill overlooking the Long Island Sound, Oheka was originally built in 1919 by financier and bon vivant Otto Hermann Kahn, whose frequent party guests included heads of state and performing artists such as Charlie Chaplin and Arturo Toscanini.

“We never allow more than one wedding in a day, so it’s like inviting your guests to your wedding in your very own castle,” says Kelly Melius, director of wedding and event sales. “Couples often spend hours posing for photos in and around the castle. We also encourage couples to place framed photos of themselves and their families around the castle so guests really feel that they are attending a wedding in a private home.

Angelica and Matthew took full advantage of the setting. “One of the most special moments was when I entered the garden in a horse-drawn carriage,” Angelica says. “Everyone was looking at the castle waiting for me to come out the doors and then as they heard the horses, they turned and had the surprise of seeing me arrive in the carriage.”

Couples who want to plan a weekend for their guests have plenty of activities to choose from. The hotel is surrounded by a championship golf course and the North Shore of Long Island is dotted with quaint towns, wineries, and historic mansions that are open to the public. One of the most interesting attractions is the Vanderbilt Museum, which offers mansion tours and a variety of fun events such as open-air concerts, dance classes, and private events and tours.

Castle Hotel & Spa, Tarrytown, New York A very different Gilded Age castle beckons in Tarrytown, New York.

Perched on a cliff with spectacular views of the Hudson River, Castle Hotel & Spa appears on the horizon like a medieval Norman castle.

It was commissioned by journalist and businessman, General Howard Carroll, who sent his architect to Europe for inspiration. In its day, the castle hosted everyone from J. P. Morgan to overseas dignitaries. Designated a historic landmark, the castle reopened as a 31room luxury hotel in 1996 and has just added a new luxury spa, the Asian-influenced THANN Sanctuary Spa.

For most couples, the sense of history holds the biggest allure. Guy and Britt Benn were drawn to the property’s European feel. “I’m English and our guests came from the U.K. and across the U.S.,” says Guy. “The venue—a beautiful old stone castle with exceptional gardens and views of the Hudson—created a sense of occasion for our guests. Plus, New York is a hub and an easy place to get to.”

While the garden is the most popular spot for ceremonies, couples also are drawn to the Great Hall, with its 40-foot vaulted ceilings and original Gothic stained-glass windows. “A lot of couples like that it resembles a church,” notes Gilbert Baeriswil, general manager. In addition to the romance of the castle setting, Katie and Erik Johnson also appreciated the location. They had guests driving from Vermont, Massachusetts, and many parts of Connecticut, as well as flying in from Minnesota. “It’s very conveniently located and people could stay right there,” says Katie.

Both couples say their guests raved about the food. “We also liked that each part of the wedding could take place in a different space with no need for transportation,” notes

Katie. “Carrie [the onsite planner] took care of everything and it was surprisingly stress-free.”

With its outdoor pool, whirlpool, spa and fitness center, one-mile nature trail, life-size chess set, and bocce court, the castle makes a great setting for weekend-long weddings.

Couples can also arrange outings to nearby attractions such as Kykuit, the Rockefeller Estate, and Washington Irving’s Sunnyside, or even into Manhattan.

Singer Castle, Hammond, New York In the 1000 Islands/Seaway region of New York, the chance to “own” a private island for a night makes for unique weddings at Singer Castle, set on Dark Island. The turnof-the-century “hunting lodge,” accessible only by boat, was built in the style of a medieval Scottish castle, complete with dungeons, knights’ armor, underground tunnels, and secret passageways to allow millionaire owner Frederick Bourne to spy on his guests.

Today, wedding ceremonies and receptions can be held in the castle and the grounds, which include a lovely rose garden and expansive lawns overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway. While not a hotel, the castle does have a posh Royal Suite (accommodating up to six) that comes

For Amy Pavia and David Zawacki of Providence, Rhode Island, Singer Castle was the perfect spot for a private affair. “We wanted to elope so the wedding could be about us,” says Amy. “We thought about getting married at a Polish castle, since David is Polish. The paperwork turned out to be too much, but we still wanted a castle.”

David was familiar with Boldt Castle from his childhood vacations in the 1000 Islands, but when the couple learned about Singer Castle, they knew it was the place for them. “It’s not as touristy and we could stay overnight, so it turned out to be a wedding and minihoneymoon,” Amy says. “Looking at our photo album, you’d think we had a full-on wedding and the price was surprisingly reasonable.

The grounds and flowers were so nice that we didn’t need to bring anything except my bouquet and David’s boutonnière.”

One of their favorite moments was walking around the grounds and sipping their morning coffee by the water. “We really felt like royalty. Who else could have a whole island?”

Make a List, Check it Twice Expert tips for constructing your guest list.

ou’ve got the ring, you’ve set a date, and now it’s time to work on one of your first wedding planning tasks: deciding on your guest list. For most couples, an unlimited number of guests just isn’t an option, and deciding who does (or doesn’t) get an invite can be a daunting task. Here are some top tips from New England experts to help guide you through the process.

Counting Costs The first thing to keep in mind, says Jackie Watson, a Vermont-based wedding planner and owner of VT Enchanted Events, is that the number of guests is usually the singlebiggest determinant of how much a wedding will cost. For couples on a standard wedding budget, she recommends planning on around $35-$60 per person for a plated meal, which means that every additional invitation comes with a substantial price tag.

So, if you’re on a budget, the best thing you can do to hold down costs is limit the number of invitations you send.

The number of guests is usually the single-biggest determinant of how much a wedding will cost.

For that reason, Karen Hyde, a Boston event planner and owner of Great Beginnings Events, encourages couples to focus on inviting people who are likely to be part of their lives for the long term. Just because someone has been a significant figure at a previous stage in your life doesn’t necessarily mean he or she should be included, especially if you don’t anticipate that individual

being there for the long haul. Avoid guests who will “be there for the day and then disappear from your life,” Hyde recommends.

Parental Guidance As you’re making your list, bear in mind that each set of parents will most likely have some names that they’d like to see included. The subject of how many guests parents should be allowed to invite is “touchy,” says Watson, but it’s important to leave some room for parents to invite people important to them, particularly if one or both families is contributing financially. “If parents are helping you, then obviously you need to be cognizant,” she says.

On the other hand, if parents want to pad the guest list with business associates or acquaintances you’ve never met, it’s time for a heart-to-heart. Approach the conversation gingerly, but be realistic with each family. “It’s not a business event,” says Hyde. “It’s a very important family event. Discuss that openly with your parents.”

The B-list Of course, some of those you invite won’t show up. For Watson’s brides, the figure of no-shows typically falls around 20% of the guest list. You can take advantage of this fact to make out an “A” list and a “B” list of names. The A list gets the first round of invitations, but as RSVPs begin to come in and you get an idea of how many guests won’t be able to come, you can send out a second round to your B list.

There are some caveats, however, if you plan a B list: for starters, cautions Hyde, never, ever let guests know which list they’re on. Additionally, be aware that there are occasions when guests decline the invitation initially but then call a week beforehand to announce that they can come after all. “Whomever you invite, you have to be prepared that they will show up,” Hyde warns.

Guests of the Guests One of the biggest dilemmas couples face when creating a guest list is the question of whether guests should be allowed to bring along dates or significant others. Allowing every invitee to continued on page 44

bring a “plus one” is prohibitive for most couples, but there are some circumstances that call for allowing a guest to bring a date.

According to Hyde, there are two factors to consider: (1) How close you are to the guest, and (2) how long the guest has been in a relationship. “It’s common courtesy and common sense that you’re going to allow your sister, who’s a member of your bridal party, to bring her boyfriend who she’s been seeing for a year,” she explains. But if a co-worker asks to bring someone that she just met two

weeks ago? That’s a different story. Simply explain, diplomatically, that budget constraints (or your desire for an intimate wedding) mean that you’re only able to invite those closest to you and your fiancé.

Kiddie Conscious A final guest-list quandary is whether or not to include kids—a decision that can significantly affect both the cost and the tone of your wedding. Hyde estimates that about 50% of the weddings she coordinates these

days are adults-only events, which are not only cheaper, but can be more enjoyable for all involved. “Children can be disruptive,” says Hyde, “and that makes it uncomfortable for not only the reception guests, it also makes it uncomfortable for the parents and the child.”

On the other hand, some guests will likely resist leaving their kids at home, and including the whole family is important to some couples. If you do choose to include kids, be prepared to modify the event to make it kid-friendly. For example, avoid serving something like lobster at the reception, says Hyde, since most young kids haven’t developed that kind of a refined taste. Also, remember to budget for a babysitter and for coloring books, crayons, games, and other methods for keeping kids entertained during the festivities.

Above all, whether there are kids or no kids, whether the guest list is small or large, stand by the ultimate principle of invitations: surround yourself with those who love you and support your union—those who will cheer you on as you say “I do” and throughout the happily ever after to follow.

f all the vendors you work with to make your wedding day an extraordinary, seamless affair, your photographer may just be the most critical. While other vendors still shine on the big day, from the caterer’s culinary creations pleasing guests’ palates, to the entertainment keeping the dance floor full, to the floral designer’s centerpieces setting the mood, the photography will be the only lasting, tangible piece from the day.

Finding the right photographer to match both your budget and vision can be daunting, but having an idea of your personal style as a couple—and what you’re looking to have as the final product—will help guide your search. “Make sure you have researched photography costs and have a good idea of what they cost in your area for the quality of photography that you want,” says Erica Leighton, owner of Closer North Photography based in Maine. “Once you know your budget, it makes looking for a photographer easier and gives you a good base of knowledge beforehand. Think of what you want most after the wedding is over. How do you want to remember your wedding and what will remain after the fact?”

Massachusetts wedding photographer Kristin Griffin agrees, adding that even with the best of intentions, do-it-yourself couples often fall short of producing an album. “I think if you don’t offer some-

thing like a printed album, a canvas or something, those images sit on the disk,” she explains. Griffin says that with technology changing so rapidly, even a disk or thumb drive could eventually become obsolete, so setting goals in advance and working closely with your photographer will get you to the finish line.

“We’ve created several finished leather albums for couples who’ve later realized it’s the wedding album that would become a family heirloom, and the very first thing they would grab to save should they ever experience a fire in the house!” adds Massachusetts photographer Chris Wakeen of Wakeen Photography, who shoots alongside wife Vickie. “All trends seem to have their day in the limelight, but then ultimately fade away. Wedding albums have endured and they’ll continue to be a big seller for us.” continued on page 52

Katie Barnes, owner of New Hampshire-based Dreamlove Wedding Photography and Wildflower Wedding Photography, says that while more of her clients prefer DVDs to traditional albums, albums still have their place. “We also let people know if they have images on a thumb drive versus in an album on a table, that album is going to get more picked up and looked through more,” says Barnes.

But, with the popularity of newer digital products like tablets, there are other options. No matter what your preference, Barnes advises couples to make sure that their photographer is using up-to-date technology. “We’ve gone from DVDs to thumb drives, for example,” she says, since more and more laptops are being made without a disk drive. “Make sure your photographer is keeping up with technology.”

When it comes to creating an album that’s fresh and modern but stands the test of time, Griffin says that it’s okay to consider new trends, but don’t let them compromise your personal style. “I think the key thing is to use trendy retouching, posing, framing, etc. sprinkled throughout a well-documented approach with classical shots that never go out of style,” she advises. “If a bride mentions ‘Style Me Pretty’ to me, I know she’s going to want a few overexposed

photographs with sun flare—I just wouldn’t want the entire album to look that way, because it may not be trendy in a few years. You want your album to be timeless and classic, full of expression and joy. Good photography never goes out of style.” Griffin often asks brides to create a few Pinterest boards for her; one with inspirational photos they love, and a second with images that make them cringe.

“It’ll help me get a sense of their style, and I think it helps them feel confident in their choice.” Griffin also advises couples to page through their parents’ albums to pick out classic styles they adore.

One trend Erica Leighton says can be very beneficial in terms of timing is the “reveal” or “first look” images. “[It’s] when the couple sees each other before the ceremony,” she explains. “I call it the ‘calm before the storm,’ when the couple can take a moment before the day starts going fast. It’s great for photography as well to get things captured before the ceremony so guests don’t have to wait as long after the ceremony.”

Another popular trend, says Leighton, are photo booths. Not only are they fun for guests, but the bride and groom can create a guest book out of the imagery from the booth by mounting the images directly into a book and having guests write fun notes and well wishes. Guests keep a matching photo strip with the wedding date imprinted, making for a great keepsake or favor.

Some photographers offer this amenity as an added option; other photo booths are independently owned and operated. Photo booths can be traditional boardwalk-style booths, but some photographers set up a draped “booth” with all kinds of whimsical props such as headbands, hats, masks, whimsical sunglasses, and feathered boas.

In this social media age of live Tweeting and posting images to Instagram, Facebook, and more, it’s no wonder that trends like same-day slideshows are so well received at weddings. This sneak peek of images, from getting ready through “I do” can be broadcast on TV screens as guests arrive for cocktails and begin settling in for din-

ner, and it’s an opportunity to reflect on the day and see the whole wedding through the photographer’s lens.

Lastly, guests who capture the perfect moment on their smartphones can play photographer for the day via new photo sharing apps. With MyWedding, for example, guests download the free app (instructions and details can be e-mailed in advance or displayed in a framed “how-to” sheet at the reception), take photos throughout the day, then instantly share their snapshots, creating a timeline of the day from all different angles. It’s important to remember, though, that smartphones are not a replacement for a professional photographer. An experienced, well-trained, and creative photographer is a truly worthwhile investment.

Bride & Groom™: How has the wedding business changed over the years?

David Tutera: The wedding business has changed a lot because brides—and, surprisingly, grooms—are much more involved in the planning of their wedding and much more hands-on than they were just ten years ago. When I meet with a client for the first time, many times they come with a much more specific vision of how they would like their wedding to look. In the past, I would get to know my clients first and work to interpret their personalities into a wedding style . . . It’s also different to have so many opinionated grooms. It’s not just about the bride anymore!

“I truly believe there is someone out there for everyone.”

B&G: What are some of the top wedding trends you’re seeing today?

DT: Some of the top trends in bridal today include using strikingly bold patterns in bright colors in place of traditional linens; dressing up a more simple dress with punchy accessories such as a statement necklace, stunning veil, or embellished clutch; focusing equally on the men’s fashion by incorporating personality through custom designed and sewn suits; hosting non-traditional receptions with appetizer- and dessert-only menus; donating to a favorite charity/charities in place of favors, or even instead of a gift for the couple; creating unique and detailed hairstyles highlighted by a birdcage veil or headpiece in place of a more traditional veil; swapping the traditional

wedding cake for desserts that represent the couple such as a gelato bar, cupcake tower, or French macaron tree; and heading to destination weddings in rustic locations, rather than beachy spots.

B&G: What’s on the menu for receptions?

DT: Receptions, more now than ever, have become the perfect place for couples to truly represent themselves and their personalities.

Many couples are opting for non-traditional receptions, where every rule is broken . . . A traditional sit-down dinner is no longer expected at every event, and many receptions are taking place earlier in the day or even late at night. Brides and grooms are also finding this the perfect opportunity to inject some of their favorite things and even bits of their culture or family. continued on page 60

B&G: Can you share a tip or two as to how our New England couples can add celebrity elements to their weddings in the examples you so gorgeously bring to life on your website?

DT: Bling—Try using an abundance of the same flower in your décor to create a lush and luxe look. You can save some room in your budget by purchasing florals in bulk, and they create sleek and elegant arrangements when grouped in big, structural shapes.

Royal—Don’t be afraid to use bold colors to create a unique and special look. Ivory and gold are great traditional wedding colors, but mixing rich purples, vibrant oranges, and opulent metallics create a look that neither you nor your guests will forget!

Golden Opulence —Use crystal candelabras and glowing candles to make a huge statement with your centerpieces. Covered in flowers, and even extra strands of dripping crystals, these will quickly fill your reception and add a warm, romantic, sparkling glow.

Grapevine—Find inspiration for your décor in your surroundings and your venue. Instead of trying to hide structural elements in your space, highlight them! This will make your décor feel more seamless and purposeful, and is a great source of inspiration if you’re stuck for ideas.

Colors of India—If you’re planning an outdoor wedding, search for unique tent options rather than your typical white. Even though your tents are serving an important purpose, they should still be visually interesting and should add to the overall décor.

Colorful or printed tents and tents in interesting shapes are perfect for this!

Old Hollywood —Mixing black and white is an easy way to get a clean and elegant look for your décor. Mix and match different patterns and textures in the same hue to easily add interest without overdoing it.

Sketches of the design, or even a demo set up in my office always gives my clients a good idea of what their wedding will look like, but it’s never a complete vision until everything is in place in the venue. DT: I like to think of specific wedding styles, rather than themes . . . Many of the brides on my show, David Tutera: Unveiled, come to me with a wedding theme, and it’s usually pretty cheesy. My goal is to take their idea and translate it into something more sophisticated and elegant, while still representing elements of their original idea. The décor of your wedding doesn’t have to be obvious; it should make your guests feel the style or theme that you’re going for without being hit over the head with it.

B&G: How can couples integrate their individuality into their celebration?

DT: There are so many ways for couples to represent themselves at their wedding! Entertainment and food are always the easiest ways to achieve this, and I especially love mixing cultural entertainment and food with a more traditional wedding. I also think that guests love it when couples serve their favorite foods or desserts, instead of your typical wedding fare. Some of my other favorite ways to incorporate individuality are through bridal accessories, surprises hidden within the décor, and unique printed materials!

B&G: Do you believe in happily ever after?

DT: I sure do! Love is one of the basic human needs, and though it takes a lot of work on each person’s part to keep a relationship strong year after year, it’s worth it in the end. I truly believe there is someone out there for everyone who will make them feel happy, supported, and fulfilled until the end of their days.

Ceremonies of seventy or less guests can be held in the museum’s intimate Chapter House, an authentic, twelfth-century meeting house that was moved from France to the United States in the 1920s. With its stunning, dome-like architecture, warm uplighting, and gorgeous stained-glass windows, the Chapter House simply exudes romance.

Larger ceremonies of up to 120 guests are held in the museum’s Renaissance Court. “The highlight of the Worcester Art Museum is most certainly the unique setting of the Renaissance Court,” says Potter, “Your event will be a true masterpiece!”

This regal space is centered by a beautiful Roman floor mosaic and is surrounded by soaring arches on nearly all sides. Look up and you’ll see the famous Wall at WAM, a larger-than-life rotating mural project. The Renaissance Court’s grand staircase provides the perfect opportunity for a beautiful entrance, and is a wonderful backdrop for portraits.

ith endless images of thin, toned, and tanned celebrities splashed all over newsstands and the internet, it’s no wonder that women feel such intense pressure to achieve sometimes unrealistic beauty ideals. This pressure is often intensified for brides. After all, what woman doesn’t want to look amazing on her wedding day?

Unfortunately, the pressure to look like a cover girl can sometimes lead to unnecessary stress and emotional pain during what is supposed to be one of the happiest times of your life, and many women resort to unhealthy methods when trying to achieve their bridal beauty goals.

While there’s nothing wrong with wanting to look your absolute best when you walk down the aisle, there’s also nothing wrong with being happy with yourself exactly the way you are. Here are some tips to help you navigate negative feelings and stay sane when dealing with wedding-related body image issues.

Stay Grounded Remember how you felt when you first met your fiancé? Remember how happy you were the moment you got engaged? When you start to feel like you aren’t good enough as you are, try to channel those feelings from way back when. Chances are, your fiancé is just as into you now as he was then—probably even more so. Remember why you fell in love in the first place; that it was your glowing confidence, unwavering kindness, or weird sense of humor that that drew you together, not your dress size.

You might also have feelings of self-consciousness about being in the spotlight in front of a sea of family and friends. But again, remember that they love you for who you are—a sister, a friend, a niece, a grandchild, an aunt, a coworker. You can bet that when they see you walking down the aisle with a big smile on your face, they are going to think you look absolutely stunning.

Get Real It’s very easy to get worked into a tizzy when you’re swimming through a sea of bridal catalogs and websites featuring impossibly well-proportioned women. Many brides feel like they need to look like a model in order to fit into that perfect dress, but in reality, the average American woman looks nothing like the fashion model wearing her dream dress.

Most gown designers offer a wide range of sizes, so it’s more than likely that you’ll be able to find THE dress in your size. Remember this when you head into bridal boutiques to try on dresses, and don’t sabotage yourself by ordering a too-small dress in hopes that you’ll fit into it by your wedding date—you could be setting yourself up for a lot of disappointment and unnecessary stress. If the boutique doesn’t carry the dress in your size, ask the salesperson to help you find a similar style, or research other stores that carry your designer of choice. And don’t forget that most dresses are customizable to each woman’s size and shape. A good tailor can bring in a toolarge bust or adjust your seams so that your dress hugs you in all the right places.

If you do decide to adopt a diet and exercise plan leading up to your wedding day, it’s very important that you set realistic goals for yourself and avoid anything too extreme.

Trying to fit hours-long workouts into an already hectic schedule could result in undue stress, and a poor diet could just compound the problem. Whether your goal is to slim down or bulk up, it’s always a good idea to consult with a health professional or athletic trainer and work with him or her to come up with a plan that works with your life. Be sure to talk about and examine the reasons behind your fitness goals as well. Are you doing this because you want to? Or are you doing it because you feel like you have to? If you’re feeling pressured, it may be time to take a step back and reevaluate things.

Focus on Feeling Good Rather than focusing on looking good, try to focus on feeling good. Do things that make you happy; take your dog for a long walk, throw a Frisbee around with your fiancé, ride your bike to a coffee shop with a friend. The fresh air and companionship could be just the thing to lift you out of a negativity funk and relieve any wedding-related stress. (bonus!)

Mindfulness is another great way of relieving stress and warding off negative feelings.

Try a gentile yoga or tai chi class at your local fitness center, or you might even want to try meditation. There even smartphone apps available that aid in meditation and relaxation. Arm yourself with a variety of stressrelief tactics and you’ll have an easier time surmounting negative thoughts.

A man’s ring should be an expression of his personality.

Play Up Your Assets Rather than trying to change what you’ve got, why not work it? Flaunt your strong calves with a cute tea-length dress and a great pair of heels. Take advantage of your A cups by donning a super-low backed gown—sans bra.

Show off your curves with an old Hollywoodinspired sheath gown. Make the most of your uniqueness and have fun with yourself!

Be Kind to Yourself Perhaps the most important thing you can do when dealing with body image issues— whether you are getting married or not—is to be kind to yourself. Rather than focusing on all of the things you dislike about your body, focus on the things you love about it. Take a look in the mirror: What do you see? Rather than thinking that your body isn’t up to “industry standards,” think about all the amazing things your body can do, like ride a bike, skip down the sidewalk, do somersaults, and—most importantly—hug your fiancé.

In the end, just love yourself and you’ll be more beautiful than any couture model on your wedding day.

hen Alexis and Dan Doherty got married in September 2012,

they didn’t want to simply have a wedding in Boston. They wanted to have a Boston wedding. “Boston’s just kind of our thing. We both went to undergrad there. We lived in the Fenway area together,” Alexis says.

“We wanted people to say, ‘Wow this is a classic Boston wedding.’”

Although rustic, country weddings are still all the rage, some couples are trading antique barns for cityscapes on their big days. According to Alexis, “little touches of Boston” were scattered everywhere when she and Dan got married. Not only were their ceremony and reception at two classic Boston locales— Trinity Church and the Fairmont Copley Plaza—but even small details reminded guests of the couple’s affection for The Hub.

Boston-themed cookies featuring the Red Sox logo, CITGO sign, the public transit “T” symbol, and the Public Garden’s swan boats served as favors. Welcome bags for out-of-town guests featured maps of the city and Cape Cod potato chips. An old-fashioned trolley even transported participants from the wedding rehearsal to the rehearsal dinner in the North End. “We wanted people to get the Boston feel of being in the city,” Alexis says.

“That comes up all the time,” says Linnea Tangorra, owner of Boston-based Tangorra Wedding Planning. She says she often works with couples who are eager to incorporate classic Boston themes into their wedding days. “People around here love showing off the city,” she says. And they’re able to show off the city in a number of creative ways. For instance, says Tangorra, instead of having a photo booth at their reception, some couples opt to hire John Forcucci, a well-know Boston caricature artist, to create caricature portraits of guests. Other couples might put up a green screen, allowing guests to pose for pictures with iconic Boston images, like Fenway Park’s Green Monster or Wally, the Red Sox’s mascot.

Couples can also channel Boston in their transportation choices. “Old Town Trolley is a wonderful company, and we use them to transport the bridal party,” Tangorra says, adding that sometimes, the trolleys can take guests on a little tour of city in between the ceremony and reception.

For couples getting married in Providence, Rhode Island, choosing an iconic location can help make the city part of the festivities. Andria Medeiros, owner and wedding planner for Providence-based Infinite Events continued on page 80

points to Providence landmarks such as the Roger Williams Casino, Roger Williams Botanical Center, Waterplace Park, Squantum Association, and the campuses of Brown University or Providence College. She adds that photojournalistic snaps of the bride and groom standing next to hard-looking city buildings make arresting images for a wedding album. “Those are some of my favorite pictures,” she says. Geneve Hoffman, owner and primary photographer of the York, Maine-based Geneve Hoffman Photography, agrees, saying that couples might even consider asking their photographer to take cityscape photos that don’t include the bride or groom, something she’s done for a couple before. “I ended up taking a bunch of stills of the city itself and working it into their album,” Hoffman says. “You really can capture that essence of the city. It’s really special. And it’s a great story to put into your album.”

Embracing local culture, vendors, and heritage is how Emily St.Peirre, owner and lead planner of All the Fuss Events in Concord, New Hampshire, incorporates cities into a couple’s wedding day. One couple St.Peirre worked with really wanted to include the waterfront city of Portsmouth in their wedding day, so she had local vendors supply homemade chocolates for guests’ welcome bags, used locally grown flowers in the ceremony, and held their reception at a downtown restaurant. “It was a really great sense of what Portsmouth is; that warm downtown kind of feel,” St.Peirre says. The couple also asked guests to sign the mat around a photo of Portsmouth. “It was a cool memory that they got married in the city,” St.Peirre says.

Whether you get married in a small city like Portsmouth or a bustling metropolis like Boston or Providence, making the cityscape an integral part of the festivities is sure to add an extra layer of meaning to your memories—and your guests’ memories, too. “That’s what people remember,” Medeiros says. “The details.”

Chef Darin’s Bride’s Biscuits Since food is such a defining element in Savannah’s culture, we’d be remiss if we didn’t give you a real taste of the south! Chef Darin Sehnert of 700 Kitchen Cooking School at Mansion on Forsyth Park shared his recipe for his famed Brides Biscuits.

Sort of a biscuit-yeast roll hybrid, Bride’s Biscuits, also known as “Angel Biscuits” are made from a dough that contains all forms of leavening: Baking soda, baking powder, and yeast. If one of the leavening agents doesn’t work, there is another that will do the job, so they are considered truly “no fail.”

Yield: 16 biscuits Ingredients: ¼ c. warm water 1 pkg. active dry yeast (or 2¼ tsp. rapid-rise/instant yeast*) 1 tbsp. granulated sugar ½ c. melted butter 1 c. buttermilk 3 c. all-purpose flour 1½ tsp. Kosher salt 1½ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. baking soda 2 tbsp. melted butter (for brushing after baking) 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

2. In a small bowl combine the water, yeast, and a pinch of the sugar. Stir and let stand until bubbly, about 5 minutes.

3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and remaining sugar. Mix well and make a well in the center.

4. In a medium bowl, combine the melted butter and buttermilk.

Pour the milk and butter mixture into the center of the dry ingredients and add the dissolved yeast. Stir to mix, adding enough flour to make a soft dough. Let rest for about 10 minutes.

5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured countertop and knead until it develops a smooth, elastic feel.

6. Using a rolling pin, roll the dough into a rectangle, approxi- mately 12” long by 6” wide. Tri-fold the dough as you would a business letter by bringing the right side in and overlapping the center third of the dough. Fold the left side over the right.

Pinch all open edges together to seal the seams. Roll out and fold once more in the same manner. After pinching the seams, gently pat into an 8 x 8” square.

7. Using a knife or bench scraper, cut the dough into quarters and then cut each quarter into 4 pieces. Spray a 9 x 9” pan with cooking spray and place biscuits into pan. Cover dough with a piece of parchment or wax paper that’s been lightly oiled or sprayed with cooking spray to keep it from sticking.

Set aside for 1-2 hours, or until the biscuits have doubled in bulk.

8. Remove the paper from the top of the biscuits and bake 10-15 minutes, or

until light golden brown on top.

Remove from oven

and brush with melted butter. *If using rapid-rise or “instant” yeast, omit the water and combine all dry ingredients together, including the yeast.
