nject your wedding with a hip dose of Amoré! Step back into the glittering era of GRAND ROMANCE and the decadent style of the glamorous 40’s and 50’s when lovers, sporting tailored tuxedos and dazzling gowns, sipped cocktails and swayed to the tunes of crooners like Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.

The glamour & style of the Romance Era returns to the Canadian Rockies A new breed of destination wedding has emerged in the Canadian Rocky Mountains bringing with it the perfect marriage between ADVENTURE and LUXURY. Whether you are an avid outdoor enthusiast in search of unspoiled wilderness or an aficionado of luxe accommodation, it’s finally possible to have it all in one spectacular wedding destination! Endless woodland vistas, towering aspen forests and emerald glacier lakes provide an endless variety of UNFORGETTABLE backdrops for your nuptials. Be swept away by breath-taking views of soaring peaks and fairytale forests. Say ‘I do’ in nature’s grandest cathedral - the Canadian Rocky Mountains and once you’ve tied the knot, mingle over martinis with your guests, celebrate with champagne fireside, and dine in delectable 4-star style at one of the Fairmont’s trilogy of historic mountain resorts: The Banff Springs Hotel, the Jasper Park Lodge, and the Chateau Lake Louise, all nestled in the heart of the majestic Rocky Mountains. These icons of style come well equipped to host the dream wedding of even the most discerning connoisseur of ROMANCE having served as the destination of choice for LEGENDARY Hollywood beauties and crooners such as Marilyn Monroe and Bing Crosby since the 1920’s. Summer or winter, the Canadian Rocky Mountains offer a dizzying array of ways to enjoy the great outdoors. Summer months beckon with glistening glacier-fed rivers and long, warm, golden evenings. Take a leisurely canoe ride or a thrilling white-water rafting trip, soar high above the icefields in a helicopter or pack a gourmet picnic and explore the pristine mountain scenery at your own pace. But don’t restrict yourself to the summer months…wrap yourself in the

warmth of a luscious white stole, sip hot chocolate and celebrate your nuptials in luxurious winter wonderland style. The Rocky Mountains are the quintessential winter wedding destination. What could be more romantic than a wonderland of white in which to tie the knot? Soar down the ski slopes together, take a romantic horsedrawn carriage ride and watch the fluffy white flakes drift past, or simply snuggle up and sip hot toddies by the warmth of a blazing fire. In the immortal words of the indomitable king of cool, Dean Martin: “Now that’s Amorè!”

Facts

Choosing a Formalwear Specialist You will want to look at the reputation and quality of your options. Get referrals from friends and family. You don’t want to compromise on quality or service and look for a retailer who carries current styles. The last thing you want is a tuxedo that looks like it’s from five years ago! Ask your tuxedo retailer these questions:

• Is stock replaced on a regular basis? • How many times is a garment cleaned and what methods do they use? • Is there a full-time, on-site tailor? • Are you allowed to try on the garment? Why be measured by a Formalwear Specialist? It is essential in ensuring you get the proper fit of your tuxedo. Property fitted formalwear is a must for comfort and look. Ask for a trained, knowledgeable fitter.

112 Bridal Fantasy 2009

How do we select a style? Look through men’s magazines and catalogues and find styles that appeal to you. Share ideas on what her attendants will be wearing because you want your formalwear to compliment the overall look of the wedding. Once you’ve decided, head to your chosen location and speak to a specialist. Make sure you have a wide selection of styles, from fashion forward looks to the traditional tuxedo. How can the groom's attendants compliment the bride's? With so many choices in accessories, you can find the perfect colour that will highlight the colours chosen for the attendants. With the largest selection of vest and accessories, formalwear professionals can assist you in co-ordinating the look of the all the attendants When is the best time to book our formalwear? As early as possible, especially if you're looking to rent during May through September to ensure you get the style you desire, as this time is still the most popular time for weddings. Booking four to six months in advance is suggested. Does everyone need to be there when we book? No and it may be easier to come in alone or just with your fiancé when making your decisions. Once the styles are chosen, your consultant will enter them into the computer system. The rest of your party can then come in at a time that works best for them, but make sure they are prompt. Should shoes be rented? In order to maintain consistency and complete the formal look, we suggest you rent shoes. You don’t your groomsmen showing up in their tuxes and sneakers. Footwear should be professionally cleaned and maintained to the highest standards. Do we need a final fit? Final fittings are conducted to ensure you have received the proper fit and that you are completely satisfied with your choices. Final fits also give you the opportunity to learn valuable tips on the proper way to wear your tuxedo. On-site tailoring means alterations can be made if necessary. Final fittings are done at the time you pick up your rental. ■

ccessibility to international styles is at a premium. Although there are still fashion centres in places like New York, Paris, Milan, London, and Tokyo access to fashions created in these design hubs are available locally. Globalization is modern day anomaly. Historically fashion has had regional limitations. Early civilizations were restricted by tailoring techniques and available resources. For centuries style wasn’t even a concept. Clothing was strictly functional in purpose and presentation.

Today’s retail reality is a global marketplace. Daily there is a worldwide exchange of culture and fashions. Internationalization of commerce has encouraged labels and brands to compete and market themselves on a global scale. This means importing fabrics, understanding trends and creating products that are marketable to a global audience. German brand Strellson prides itself on being an innovative brand for a new generation of men symbolizing internationalism, self confidence, and independence. Interestingly part of Strellson marketing strategy is outfitting Swiss International Airlines with their clothes. Alternatively, and new to western Canada this spring the innovative Italian brand Tombolini has undertaken an ambitious international distribution initiative. The brand is moving away from sober traditional suit styles towards an awareness of individual tastes. They are utilizing modern light fabrics emphasizing comfort and elegance. â–

t’s always all about the bride. What about the other fifty percent of the equation; the more handsome part? It is high-time the groom starts getting a little more of the focus; after all, they’re the ones who have to work up the nerve to get down on bended knee.

Celebrity Groom

CTV Edmonton’s Joel Gotlib

ridal Fantasy caught up with newlywed Joel Gotlib, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, at CTV Edmonton and found out a little about his lucky lady, the funny stuff that happened on the big day, and what his advice is for grooms-to-be.

B

BF: How did you meet Samantha? Joel: I met Samantha in September of 2005 when I was asked by the CTV Promotions department to take part in “Dancing for The Kids”, a fundraiser that’s similar to the television show, Dancing With The Stars. I was the celebrity dancer and she was my instructor. We danced a Tango for the competition that raised funds for children battling cancer (put on by Sunrise Rotary). Of course, we didn’t break the student/teacher relationship until after the competition.

BF: When did you know you wanted to marry her? Joel: The first time I met Sam, I was lovestruck. I knew I wanted to marry Samantha a couple years later when we met up in Lake Como, Italy in July of 2007. We had trouble finding each other, so I had to check into a hotel and log onto my hotmail account to tell her where I was. It took an entire day to finally find each other; when she jumped into my arms in the town’s main square, I knew I couldn’t live my life without her. BF: What advice do you have for grooms-to-be? Joel: Follow your gut instinct and don’t be afraid to open your heart to love. If you need some time to make sure that getting married is the right decision for you, then take the time. Be true to yourself. When you do decide to get married, know that it’s a partnership and that you are in the relationship together. What matters to your wife or fiancé is more important then what matters to you. Put your bride before yourself and know that compromising is key to a successful relationship. BF: What is the funniest thing that happened at your wedding? Joel: It must have been my buddy, Brennan Watts, giving me a big wet kiss at the head table. It lasted for about five seconds. Daryl McIntyre’s song that he wrote for me and Sam (called Dancing on Air) also provided plenty of laughs. The speech by my best men and groomsman, Rob Williams, Dave Parker and Brennan Watts was also pretty funny. They were kind enough to give me some hay after seeing my CTV News promotional spot on why I love Edmonton.

“Samantha and Joel were an absolute pleasure to work for; a perfect couple. There was such a positive vibe all day. It was one big party! They didn’t make us feel like someone they hired, they made us feel like guests.” – Bill Cowen, Bill Cowen Photography

just say that after my session with them, beer started tasting like soda water. After golfing we had an awesome dinner in the clubhouse. In the evening, a stretch limo picked us up and we toured the city for an hour. We ended up at Suede where we met up with my Sam and her stagette. I know it breaks from tradition, but I really wanted to hook up with the woman of my dreams the night of my stag. Although some of the guys weren’t crazy about the idea, I’m glad we did it that way. So is Samantha. BF: Any stag survival tips? Joel: Don’t let your buddies make you drink stuff that you don’t want to drink. Stay hydrated, pace yourself, have fun, and make sure you hook up with your fiancé at the end of the night. I also recommend having the stag a week or more before your wedding, so you have enough time to feel fantastic for your wedding day. ■

BF: Which of your groomsmen embarrassed you the most, and why? Joel: I’d have to say Brennan embarrassed me the most with the big wet kiss. (It was more than I expected). BF: What did you do for your stag? Joel: My stag was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better party. Brennan, my groomsman, organized an awesome day of golf at Blackhawk. I played 3 holes with every group, so I got to make the rounds. It got pretty crazy when I golfed with my former News Director Steve Hogle and my current News Director Glenn Kubish. Let’s

amily plays a major role in Arabic weddings. Keeping in mind that Western culture has definitely changed certain aspects of the marriage process, it is still tradition for both sides of the family to be involved in all aspects of the union starting with the couple’s initial encounter. Traditional Arabic weddings involve several days of celebrating; there are typically five separate parties, each with a specific purpose, which occur before the couple is officially wed. First, a proposal party is held at the bride’s house where the groom asks the bride’s father or the eldest man in her family for the bride’s hand in marriage. All of the male

relatives and friends on both sides of the family are in attendance. Khotba, the engagement party, is when the bride and groom exchange rings. Katb Kitab is the official marriage ceremony and is held in a Mosque. This is the most spiritual aspect of the union because the couple are wed in front of God. The last celebration to occur prior to the wedding is the Henna Night, similar to a bachelorette party, in which the

bride gathers with her female friends and relatives to dance and be adorned in henna. The fifth and final celebration is the wedding day. The couple’s female friends and relatives join the bride and groom at one of their parent’s homes where they celebrate by dancing and showering the couple with gifts. The bride and groom switch their rings from the right index finger to the left index finger in front of the Zafah, who then proclaims their marriage before the Gods and people in attendance. At this point the festivities climax and everyone gathers at a reception for dancing, singing, entertainment and food. ■

ou’re getting married. He proposed and you said ‘yes’. You’re about to merge your lives forever. From combining your laundry to coordinating your schedules, compromise and understanding will be crucial to ensure you are both happy. Beyond the day to day activities and personality differences, an increasing number of couples have another issue to overcome, blending two unique cultural backgrounds. This past April, Statistics Canada released new dating indicating in 2006 there was over a quarter of a million mixed-race couples (married and common law); one third more than in 2001, the last time a survey was done. Eighty-five percent of these marriages involved a Caucasian person and a visible minority. As travel and immigration continue to open people’s eyes to the beauty of diversity, it makes sense that love has become increasing color blind. Jordan Rosentreter and Dave Tran, better known to loved ones as the Rosentrans, share a love so strong that it has conquered any couple and cultural diversity they have faced. Dave’s Vietnamese roots remain an influential part of his life, as does Jordan’s Catholic faith. After being inseparable for two years, Dave proposed this past May. They’re planning to declare their love for each other in front of seventy-five close friends and family members at the Juniper Hotel in Banff on July 18, 2009. Shallon Cunningham, an experienced and vibrant Calgary-based photographer shot couple’s engagements photos this past fall. “Before I shot their engagement photos, I got a feel for what they wanted as their backdrop. Since they had decided to get married in the mountains in summer, they wanted their engagement photos to have a different appeal. They decided to use Alberta’s beautiful fall colors to their advantage. They have a dog (who is so cute!) and they wanted to have him in some of their shots as well. I had a fabulous time shooting Jordan and Dave; they’re very photogenic. My favourite

shots were the ones where I felt that they were being themselves; laughing, talking and smooching, and I just happened to be there to capture the moment.” Bridal Fantasy had a chance to chat with the newly-weds-to-be and learn more about their love, what they’ve got planned and how they’re planning to incorporate each other’s backgrounds into their wedding. BF: Was it love at first sight? Jordan: Absolutely - It was instant chemistry! Dave: Besides the physical attraction, we just "clicked" on all levels which made everything so comfortable. It reached a point very quickly where we loved each other's company. BF: What happened when you got engaged? Jordan: Our engagement was the most romantic thing that’s ever happened to me. I came home after work and he had set-up an elaborate scavenger hunt around our condo. It involved a dozen red roses, a mirror full of heart-shaped stickies (each one with a reason why he loves me), a movie with pictures of us as babies and of the times we shared together, Santi (our dog), and a night at the Hotel MacDonald. Dave: It was our 2 year anniversary and we were supposed to have a quiet dinner at home. But little did she know I had taken the entire day off to get ready for the proposal; I wanted to WOW her.

BF: How do you plan to incorporate each of your cultural backgrounds into the wedding? Jordan: We are having a Buddhist Blessing at the Temple in Edmonton a few days before the wedding. Along with Dave’s mother and sister, I will be wearing a traditional Ao Dai (Buddhist wedding dress), which has been ordered from Vietnam. Dave’s parents will also be performing the Vietnamese tea ceremony to both sides of the family. For me to be included in this type of ceremony is such an honour. For our actual wedding a few days later, we are having a Justice of the Peace marry us on an out-door terrace in Banff. In order to honour both cultures and religions, we are having Catholic and Buddhist readings at the ceremony. The idea of incorporating our different cultures was something we both agreed on early in the planning process and it has helped shape how our entire day will unfold. BF: Have you had any issues that you’ve had to deal with, which have stemmed from cultural difference? How have you dealt with them? Jordan: I wouldn’t say that we’ve had any major issues. Both our Buddhist and Catholic backgrounds have been a part of our lives to this point and will continue to be a part of our life together. The key is really to understand what is important to the other person and to try to meet in the middle. Opening yourself to a new idea, a new culture, a new religion is such an interesting and enlightening opportunity. I am so lucky that I have met someone who feels the same way. Dave: We are both very grateful to have parents who believe in our happiness and choices that we make. Although there are some differences in our cultural beliefs, it has never become a major issue. I think the reason for that is because both cultures have similar values and morals. ■ 2009 Bridal Fantasy 129

Dance the Night Away

Looking for an affordable way to add ambiance and charm to your special evening? Why not hang paper lanterns? Color combinations, like lime green and light pink help to create a fun and whimsical atmosphere. For a more elegant, breathtaking feel, hang only white lanterns in various sizes. Available in a wide array of colors, sizes and patterns; light weight, battery operated and easy to install, lanterns will add a glorious glow to your reception. Visit www.blowflowerdesigns.com for more information. Do’s & Don’ts When Hanging Paper Lanterns Don’t skimp. A few lonely lanterns strewn around the room looks cheap and lacks the ‘Wow’ factor. Lanterns are best displayed in groupings (and most decorators will tell you odd numbered groups are best). Do consider renting instead of purchasing if budget is a concern. If your venue is too large and you do not have the budget to acquire lanterns to fill the room, consider zone lighting. Hang a grouping of lanterns above the dance floor or above the head table. Don’t hang with string. The number one mistake most people make is hanging their lanterns with ugly string, twine or wire. Do consider hanging your lanterns with beautiful ribbon or clear beading cord, otherwise known by its manlier name, fishing line.

Don’t hang all your lanterns at the same height. Hanging your lanterns at the same height can look a little boring and lacks depth. Instead, try to hang them at different heights; you will achieve greater visual impact particularly when using one color. Don’t hang too high. Your lanterns should feel like a warm cloud of bubbles above you. You will lose the ambiance by hanging your lanterns too high. Juliana Williams Blow Flower Designs www.blowflowerdesigns.com

the

Venue Verdict

The reception is going to take the largest portion of your wedding budget. You want to make sure it goes off without any hitches. Check out our quick tips to help keep your reception planning going smoothly. •

get the total number of guests (approximately) you plan on inviting before settling on a venue to ensure there is ample space for everyone. Remember to take waiters, tables, chairs, the band/DJ and the dance floor into account if your wedding date is on the same day as a conference or other local event, that can really affect hotels and traffic. Check it out! try to request an extra hour from your vendors for a cocktail hour. Most vendors want to secure you and your reservation and are more willing to deal at the beginning of negotiations versus later on when you’ve already signed a contract last minute planning can sometimes work in your favour. Since most people book their wedding sites a minimum of six months in advance, calling for any open dates two months can save you up to 25% on your reception site. And remember, any day other than Saturday can cost up to 30% less once you’ve picked your date, start looking for hotels with a variety of prices. Most hotels allow you to book a block of rooms with a reduced rate. You can then release rooms you aren’t going to need about a month prior to your wedding, saving more money! make sure there is lots of time for set-up. Find out what time people can come into the venue, especially if you are bringing in decorators from outside. If possible, get in the day before, or at least get the entire wedding day. ■ 2009 Bridal Fantasy 139

Liquor & the Rules Saving money on drinks may be more complicated than you think. If you choose to let the venue take care of this aspect, you may eliminate some headache. It may be a better idea to try and save money in other areas, as the liabilities involved with alcohol consumption may not be worth the narrow savings of taking this task on. If you choose to provide your own alcohol, or host your own bar for your wedding, keep the following in mind: •

You must provide proof of insurance liability, which is usually added as a one day rider to your home insurance policy.

You must have a liquor license. You can typically purchase this where you buy the liquor. Make sure to talk to the store manager and have him or her include the purchase of a liquor license with your alcohol order.

As of January 1st, 2010, all staff involved in the serving of liquor must be ProServe Certified. You will no longer be allowed to choose a friend or relative to be the bartender unless he has the ProServe training and can provide his laminated card as proof. For more information please visit www.ProServe.aglc.ca.

The venue will charge you a bartending fee as well as a corkage fee for each individual attending.

Picking up the alcohol and then taking back any that is left over will add another item to your ‘to do’ list.

Green Venue y doing a little bit extra homework, you can find green solutions to your wedding that might not have occurred to you otherwise. Consider hosting your ceremony and reception in one location. You can reduce the amount of emissions produced and reduce your overall facility rental cost by only needing one location.

B

If it is not possible to host both the ceremony and reception in one location, consider arranging for a shuttle service to transport your guests, again reducing the amount of emissions produced. Look at having a daytime wedding, which can drastically cut down on the amount of electricity that is used. Daytime weddings are becoming increasingly popular; particularly outdoor afternoon weddings. Consider a sophisticated morning champagne breakfast or chic afternoon picnic wedding. When selecting a location be sure to ask the venue personnel questions such as:

142 Bridal Fantasy 2009

Do they recycle bottles, paper and plastic?

If they cater events, what do they do with the leftover food? Can it be taken to a homeless shelter or other organization helping those in need?

Do they use chemical pesticides on their lawns and gardens?

Ask what initiatives they have taken to reduce their carbon footprint on the environment. Do they use energy efficient light bulbs? Do they use recycled paper products? Are the facilities cleaned with chemical cleaners or eco-friendly biodegradable products?

Hosting your wedding in a State/Provincial park or natural reserve is a great environmentally friendly choice; not to mention makes an amazing backdrop for your wedding. Research facilities that promote environmental preservation: Places such as bird or wildlife sanctuaries will often have centers that can be rented for special events. Usually rental proceeds will go towards further preservation and public education. ■

Eco-Friendly

Here are some great tips for having an eco-friendly event:

• Use recycled paper for your wedding invitations (and save on paper by setting up a website for your save-the-date notices)

• Use shells, pretty rocks, and naturally made candles to create gorgeous table centerpieces or to line your aisle

• If you're having a gown made, choose a natural fiber, like cotton

• Take any food leftover from the reception to a local soup kitchen or shelter

• Grooms can wear a natural linen suit

• Get to and from your wedding on environment-friendly, non-fuel burning bikes (and if your guests must travel farther than walking distance from ceremony to reception site, arrange for carpools

• Make sure your wedding-day cosmetics are made by cruelty-free companies, such as The Body Shop, and Clinique • Grow your own wedding flowers -- try potted asters, impatiens, mums, dahlias, daisies, tulips, hyacinths, and miniature roses, which are all replantable

Style and Theme When a couple envisions their dream wedding, it is really their wedding style or theme that they are creating. You need to consider the season you are getting married in, the size of your guest list and your personal taste and interests. Formal or casual is your first consideration. A fairy tale or formal wedding has a traditional church ceremony followed by a lavishly decorated reception, complete with music, wedding cake, several courses to your meal, and most certainly dancing the night away.

A simple or more casual wedding could be a backyard wedding or a sunset cruise on a lake. A casual wedding theme may lack in extravagance but it more than makes up for it in its light-hearted atmosphere and intimacy. Overall, your wedding style and theme should be a reflection of your tastes, your interests and what you imagine this day to be. This day should be one that is close to your heart of what you have dreamt about since you were young. ■

Ask Gay

About Your Day QUESTION: I know that it is customary to invite the officiant but I was wondering what the etiquette is today. My fiancé and I have met the minister but we don’t have any previous ties to him or the church we are marrying in and by the time of the wedding we will have had two quick meetings with him. Is it required to send an invitation to him and his wife? ANSWER: While normally you would invite your officiant to the wedding, if you have no personal relationship with them it is not required. Look at your budget – etiquette would say yes but it is not necessary. QUESTION: Is it normal to be nervous, well more having second thought before you get

144 Bridal Fantasy 2009

married? I love my fiancé and want to marry him but the more planning we do the more nervous I get. ANSWER: Nerves are completely normal! Part of your nervousness comes from the stress of planning such an important day. Make sure to take time out of planning or anything wedding-related to re-connect with your fiancé – have a movie date or take a weekend getaway. It will give you both a chance to relax and de-stress. QUESTION: I’m planning on hiring two or three hairstylists to come into my home and do all of our hair (10 bridesmaids and me) on the day of the wedding. I thought I would be responsible for this cost as it’s not absolutely

necessary to have your hair done by a professional – but was wondering that if the girls usually cover the cost of their own hair for the wedding? ANSWER: Traditionally your bridesmaids are responsible for the costs associated with their portion of the wedding day. The dress and hair is normally each girl’s responsibility. It is a nice gesture to help them cover the costs if it is going to be quite high (having someone come into your home is usually more than a salon) but you are not responsible for the total amount. If you have questions about your wedding day, send them to Gay at askgay@bridalfantasy.com.

A Rave Reception ooking to stretch the limits and have a wedding like no other? Don’t be afraid! Try something new that will completely define to everyone who you are as a couple. There are a ton of ideas out there; from a complex Hawaiian luau to a simple element like snowflakes that inspires the whole theme.

L

Locating the right place to have your fantastic affair is one of the greatest challenges. Different venues will set different tones for your reception. Locate a distinctive venue and transform the space you choose by setting up screens to create different environments. You can use lighting to change the mood from one area to the next. Finding a common chord that plays through all of the elements of your wedding will help you put on a reception that will be truly unforgettable. Have a photo booth set up at your reception site that your friends and family can use to take their own pictures and group shots. The results are like a home video without any sound. It doesn’t matter what you do, whether you pose properly or stick your tongue out, these pictures will show the true colours of your wedding. Compile them into a visual wedding-day guest book, and these

photos will be treasured by the bride and groom for years. The vibe of any and all weddings is dictated by the dĂŠcor. If you are looking for romance, cover your space with dozens of red roses and gold accents. For a more casual elegance, use candles set afloat in pools and flowers in fish bowls. White-on-white is never out of style. While there are a lot of people looking for ultra-hip and modern colours, there are those who want very traditional. Talk to your florist and decorator: mix shades of white in the bouquets and have a white wedding cake with ivory sugar blossoms. Some final touches on this look: waiters dressed in white tuxes and of course, a white limo. You can also develop a visually stunning scene with monochromatic colour. Try using different shapes and sizes of tables and use different designs or textures for fabrics on set

tables. Your colour palette will remain the same throughout, but each table will have its own personality. Lighting is key. You can use candlelight or strung twinkle lights, but ask if your venue has another form of lighting and see if you can use it! Be careful, it can border on cheesy if you overdo it but putting your new monogram on the white walls during your first dance can add a beautiful and unexpected element to the occasion. Expresso bars a great accessory to dessert. Lattes and cappuccinos served on dainty china can be very sexy drinks. This works really well with a dessert buffet. Bring in a lot of different sweets and talk to your caterer about fun and creative ways to decorate the tables and present the mini-desserts. You can even get friends and family in on this – ask your best friend to make those fantastic brownies, or your aunt to make her famous pecan squares.

Covering

Your Day or most couples, having incredible photos to remember their wedding by is paramount. Photos allow us to feel past emotions, remember that which has been forgotten, discover that which was missed and freeze a memory in time forever. Wedding photography allows one to capture a minute detail in a unique way and to experience every moment more fully. Bridal Fantasy got the low down from an abundance of fantastic photographers on why they love wedding photography.

F

“It’s a great excuse to devour free food! Joking aside, Rina and I are passionate about wedding photography because we love telling stories. When else in your lifetime can you witness such an outpour of emotions? From the bride’s embrace with her parents and the groom’s tears at the altar, to the lovers’ first dance as soul-mates. Every wedding story is truly special. We thrive on capturing the couple’s unique personalities and chemistry.” Anthony and Rina, Infused Studios Creative Photography

“Every weekend I get to be a part of something truly special. I get to experience love and capture it in all its glory. Every wedding is different and brings its own unique challenges. There is so much magic that happens around me on a wedding day. I try my best to capture it all with style and flare. My job is to make the bride and groom look stunning on their most important day of their lives.” Johnny Tran, JT Images 146 Bridal Fantasy 2009

“I love wedding photography because it’s like having a front row seat to the most important event in a couple’s journey. It’s fun, it’s unpredictable, it’s beautiful and I’ve been invited to capture it all.” Amanda Dunlop, Amaze Photography by Amanda

“We love that we get the opportunity to capture the true emotions of the day and the privilege to create a story book of each very special wedding” Kim & Lynn, Studio 9 Photographics

2009 Bridal Fantasy 147

“Next to the birth of a child, this is the single most important day of someone’s life. To be a part of that, to be the one entrusted to document it is a privilege. That and it’s usually a really great party!” Bill Cowen, Bill Cowen Photography

“The glamour! Starting with an always stunning bride, to the lush bouquets... from the intricate cake details, to the lovely rose petals in the aisle... from the bling of the rings, to the confident stance of each groom... from the gorgeous chair covers to the touching first dance. It's a privilege to render every aspect in the form of photographs.” Stephanie Cragg, Stephanie Cragg Weddings 148 Bridal Fantasy 2009

"On the wedding day we are privy to glimpses of intimacy between a bride and groom. It is up to us to catch these fleeting moments… what can be better than capturing life as it happens?" Curtis & Eva Comeau, Instant Memories

“A hopeless romantic at heart, I have always taken great pleasure at capturing the emotions displayed between two souls in love. The subtle touch of her hand, the look in his eyes, the gentle whispers of sweet nothings in her ear. I don't merely see it through my lens but I feel it too, an energy so palpable, so strong that I find myself buoyed up and swept away in the emotion of the day before I must remind myself that I am merely a witness to their love.” Andrew Bradley, Andrew Peter Bradley Photography

“Witnessing the adoration in the groom’s eyes as he sees his bride for the first time, capturing the newly-weds first kiss and preserving precious moments on a couple’s special day are just a few reasons why I love photographing weddings.” Kelly Kreger, Studio Four Twelve Photography 2009 Bridal Fantasy 149

"Wedding photography is the heart of photography. To capture wedding images that leave an impression, the photographer must be able to connect to people. For me, it's not just the photography I am passionate about, but rather what it brings to my life. It allows me to make a connection with humanity; it's what motivates me to continue working without tire. I love wedding photography not because of the beautiful gowns or flowers, but because of the significance of the day, the impression I am left with by sharing in this day and mostly because of what I give them; an interpretation of their love with photography that required an invested heart." Vitalia Daza, Daza Photography

“We love wedding photography because it’s one of the most important and happy days in a couples life, and we’re right there, front row and center, to capture every moment.” Izabela Wozniak, Bella Photography 150 Bridal Fantasy 2009

“I love wedding photography because weddings are exciting. People are at their best, they look good, they feel good and generally they are on a high note. The day for me becomes a fine balance between being an entertainer and a creator. I love the fact that creativity and spontaneity have to mesh well in order to create that unforgettable wedding experience. Paul Walker, McMaster Photographers

“Weddings. Who wouldn't love them? Everyone is in a joyous mood, people are looking their best, and there are endless displays of pure emotion that I can preserve in print. I like to solve problems, and I like to be the calm in stressful times. When it comes to weddings, not everything runs smoothly, so when bridesmaids are nowhere to be found, or the cooler at the hall breaks down and the food is spoiled, I enjoy stepping up and providing good advice, direction, and service above and beyond the images that I capture. Jeff Hilbrecht, Trident Photography

Choosing a Wedding Photographer hoosing a wedding photographer is almost as difficult as selecting your wedding dress. You can spend anywhere from a thousand to ten thousand dollars, photography styles are unique to each photographer and there are literally hundreds of photographers to choose from. This article will give you some basic tips to help you try to find that perfect photographer.

C

in the quality of portfolios and levels of experience. You will also begin to feel more comfortable with your knowledge level and the choices will become easier. Strongly consider experience I cannot stress this enough. Many of the wedding photographs you will see were taken at the optimum moment under the best conditions. But what happens if it rains or your formal location has other bridal parties waiting in front of you. How will your photographer respond? A good wedding photographer must be able to capture moments while reacting quickly to unforeseen problems. These skills are often honed by experience. “Wedding photography is not being just a photographer, many people know about the technical side, but if you don’t have the people skills or can’t read body language it can affect your final photo,” says Lynn from Studio 9 Photographics. Hire someone within your budget Your wedding day is once in a lifetime, and it is very important that you hire a professional photographer to capture the memories, but not at the expense of going into heavy debt. Choose a photographer within your predetermined budget. This will ensure you are comfortable with your choice, both on the day and after your wedding. Just remember you get what you pay for.

Meet for a consultation This is an absolute must. Most well established professional photographers will have their own office or studio and will ask for you to come in and see their work. If a photographer has their own office chances are they are a full time pro and are well qualified to shoot your wedding. If the photographer wants to meet you at a coffee shop I would be leery. Offering to meet at a coffee shop or your house is typical for weekenders and amateurs. That being said there are some professionals who elect to meet at coffee shops. I just suggest you need to be a little more diligent with your questions if this is the case. Ask to see samples from several weddings Regardless of your consultation location it’s very important to ask to see samples from several weddings. I would suggest 25 or more. (The typical professional photographer shoots 14-16 weddings a year, so this should not be an issue). “A bride would never choose a hair stylist who has only styled 25 people in

their life. So why would you consider a photographer who has shot less than 25 weddings?” says Trevor from Instant Memories Photography. Make sure you meet at least three photographers As you begin to meet more photographers inevitably you will begin to see the difference

Get an engagement photo shoot I suggest an engagement photo shoot for one main reason: you will have a chance to see if the three of you have chemistry and work well together. It’s rare but some photographers offer this service for free as a chance to prove themselves to you before you book, while most others charge you a fee and deduct it off their price if you decide to book. I would strongly suggest you consider for photographers who offer engagement photos for free and at least take them up on their offer. You have nothing to lose. At times the process of choosing a wedding photographer can seem time consuming and lengthy. But remember you’re planning a once in a lifetime celebration so time put in now pays off two fold on your wedding day. Just make sure you have fun in the process. I hope some of these tips help ease the pressures of choosing a wedding photographer who will capture the memories that will last a lifetime. ■ Curtis Comeau www.curtiscomeau.com 2009 Bridal Fantasy 153

One of the hottest colours of the season? Gold. This f a b u l o u s metallic can be used as the base for your paper Stationery by: Pink Polka Design choice, engraving for a more elegant feel or as lining for your envelopes. Another great option that is replacing the brown of last season is grey. It’s super cool and can be used in a very modern way when you pair it with a beautiful blue or pretty pink. It is a softer look but very chic. A more contemporary look for colours is to go with something bold and bright. Combining a vivid fuchsia with black makes a great statement. Get a vintage look by using swirl or damask patterns. Use a monogram with stylish elements, or intertwine your initials for an updated look. Keep monograms limited though, avoid placing them on every available flat surface. To add some more glamour use high-end fabrics like velvet or silk. Ribbons are a great addition too, either double-faced satin or organza. Using a silhouette is fast becoming a classic look for invites. These types of designs give your invites a whimsical touch but still look refined. Postcard save-the-dates and reply cards are quickly becoming the favourite for couples today. They are easy to mail and help save on paper costs by eliminating the extra envelope. Make sure your response cards are pre-stamped and addressed – it makes easier to people to respond to you. Creating Your First Home Together etting engaged is an exciting time as you and your partner make the commitment to journey through life together. And although wedding and honeymoon plans are important, eventually everything begins to settle and you start to think about your new home as a couple. After the wedding, many couples decide that the time is right for them to buy a house. Below is a seven step process that will ensure you and your partner are as happy with your new home as you are with each other.

monitor the market, and connect you with mortgage brokers. The agent will also work on your behalf to negotiate the best price and terms.

Step 1 Deciding what type of home to buy. Choosing a type or style of home has a lot to do with lifestyle, it involves location, the amount of space required, and the amount of time you want to put into maintenance or renovations. Before you begin to look for a home, spend an evening making a list of desired features for your new home. Ensure that you each make a separate list.

• Tip 4: Watch the Market. If you are interested in current market updates visit www.thecalgaryrealestateblog.com.

G

Step 2 Talk through the differences. Once your lists are complete compare notes so that you can achieve your ideal home. It is important that you discuss the different expectations so that you have a common understanding and image of a home you will both be satisfied with. Step 3 Can you afford it? Before you start to look for your new home make an appointment with a mortgage broker or banker to review your collaborative financial situation. Based on

this evaluation they will indicate the maximum mortgage you will be approved. Ensure that you factor in your other monthly expenses and your overall financial plan so that you don’t overspend on your new home. • Tip 1: Hold Off. Before you buy, hold off on getting a car loan or making any furniture purchases, as any big expenditures on credit will reduce your buying power and hurt your credit score. • Tip 2: A down payment alternative. Saving for a down payment can be tricky when you are trying to plan and pay for a wedding. A new idea is to skip the usual wedding presents in favour of a down payment registry. Step 4 Ready! Once you have completed your due diligence, call a real estate professional that is a Buyers Specialist to represent you in your home purchase. This agent will work on your behalf to find properties, arrange showings,

• Tip 3: A Buyers Specialist is Free. There is no cost to use a Real Estate Professional, as the seller is responsible for the fee.

Step 6 Ugh… packing and moving can be stressful and time consuming. Before you move, make sure that you sort through your own items to eliminate duplicates; have your partner do the same. This will reduce the hassle of moving unnecessary items and will make moving day a more enjoyable process. Step 7 Kick up your feet and relax; The wedding is over and you have moved into your new home. Take time to enjoy your new spouse. ■

Perfect Pearls Say ‘I do’ to Sparkling White Teeth re you considering having your teeth whitened for the big day? If so, you’re not alone. Refreshing your smile has become a must for many brides and grooms. With so many teeth whitening options, it’s hard to know which route is the best for you. Bridal Fantasy sought the advice of an expert, Dr. Wade Foster, part owner and dentist at Pinnacle Dental (www.pinnacledental.ca).

A

BF: What types of treatment is available to obtain a sparkling white smile? Pinnacle Dental: The most commonly used dental method is vital tooth whitening. This can be achieved through a take home whitening kit or an in office treatment (Zoom 2) whitening. However individuals who have severe intrinsic staining of the teeth or who have heavily restored teeth may benefit more from veneers and crowns to achieve the white smile they have been dreaming of. BF: Is there a tooth whitening treatment that is optimal? Pinnacle Dental: Not all tooth whitening agents are the same. At the same time not all tooth stains are the same. Whitening can be used as a treatment for teeth that are discolored due to intrinsic and extrinsic staining. Examples of intrinsic staining are endodontic staining and tetracycline induced discoloration. Extrinsic staining examples include fluorosis, demineralization, staining due to aging, smoking, and ingested food and beverages. How well a whitening agent works depends on how long it is in contact with the tooth surface, how concentrated the whitening agent is and how strong the stain is. Tooth whitening toothpaste can clean surface stain but can not clean stains within the enamel. Whitening toothpastes include chemicals and abrasives that can pose a risk to the structure of the tooth if you use them too frequently. Whitening tooth pastes are effective in maintaining the current color of your teeth or after they are whitened. Whitening agents most effective to remove stain are in the form of hydrogen or carbamide peroxide. These agents are found in over the counter (OTC) whitening strips, take home dental whitening kits or in office treatments. The concentration of the whitening agent in the OTC strips is less than that from the dentist

and therefore may not be effective as what the dentist can offer. BF: How far in advance of the wedding date should one have their teeth whitened? Pinnacle Dental: It is always best to seek a dentist as soon as possible if you are interested in looking to improve your smile. Your teeth will need to be cleaned and have a complete exam prior to doing any whitening procedure. Should your mouth be in a healthy state a whitening procedure can be performed in a matter of a few weeks with a take home kit or a matter of hours with an in office treatment. However, if your teeth have any cavities or gum disease this needs to be treated prior to having any cosmetic procedure. People who have tetracycline staining should allow 3-6 months to whiten their teeth. BF: Are there any precautions one should take prior to having a whitening procedure done? Pinnacle Dental: If you have front teeth that have existing caps or crowns which look the same shade as your existing teeth, steps will need to be taken prior to undergoing a tooth whitening procedure. Pregnant women and women breast feeding should not undergo whitening. You also do not want to whiten if you have untreated cavities or gum disease. Make sure to let your dentist know if you have sensitive teeth or gums. BF: What are common side effects, if any, that can be expected from whitening? Pinnacle Dental: The most common adverse reactions to tooth whitening is tooth hypersensitivity and soft tissue irritation. Tooth hypersensitivity is individually based, this sensitivity is transient with no long term

effects. Dentists have gels and pastes that can be used prior to and after whitening to reduce this reaction as well. A person who is more prone to sensitivity would be best suited to a take home kit so they can manage how long and how many times an application is made. Soft tissue irritation is usually due to higher concentration whitening agents coming into contact with the gum tissue. This can be kept to a minimum with the fabrication of custom trays made at a dental office for take home whitening kits. Whitening strips bought at the store are one size fits all so it can be expected that they will cover the gum tissue. The more customized the kit, the less irritation a person will experience. A dentist can place a protective cover on the gums to keep soft tissue irritation to a minimum, if an in office whitening procedure such as Zoom 2, is performed. BF: Is tooth whitening typically covered by employee benefit plans? Pinnacle Dental: Because tooth whitening is a cosmetic procedure it is not typically covered by employee benefit plans. BF: Is there any other information one should know in regards to having their teeth whitened? Pinnacle Dental: Tooth whitening can have a profound effect on an individual. A person may not be as self conscious of their smile. You will be able to smile worry free, which will have a positive effect on the people around you. Let your dentist advise you on what method is best suited for you. ■ 2009 Bridal Fantasy 165

You Are what

Dress shopping, ordering invitations and meetings with caterers; you’re taking care of so many wedding arrangements, make sure that you are also taking good care of yourself! Whether you have three weeks to go or your wedding is months away, here are some very simple, yet crucial, wedding nutrition tips to ensure you look and feel your best on your wedding day.

No crash dieting – Depriving your body of much needed nutrients and energy will leave you tired, grumpy, and anxious due to low blood sugar. Long periods of little or no food intake will decrease your metabolism because your body will attempt to preserve energy. Instead have three small meals and two small snacks throughout the day to keep your energy levels constant. Choose foods high in protein and fibre, such as lean meats, vegetables, fruit and low fat dairy products for satiety and long term energy.

Watch portion sizes – Weight loss is all about energy in and energy out. It is possible to gain weight eating “healthy foods” if you eat more calories than you are expending in your day. Meat servings at meals should be the size of a deck of cards, starch portions should be no bigger than a serving the size of your fist, and aim to eat 1-2 cups of veggies or fruit with meals. Limit sauces, dressings and added oils. Stay hydrated – Aim to drink 6-8 cups of fluid each day. Research shows that hunger and thirst mechanisms in the body are similar, so if you are even slightly dehydrated your body may signal you to head for the refrigerator instead of the water cooler. Dehydration will cause dry flaky skin, low energy, headaches and fatigue. If plain water is boring, add orange, lemon, lime or cucumber slices, or an individual Crystal Light packet to add some flavor.

Steer clear of sodium – Adding salt to food will cause water retention making you look and feel puffy. Choose fresh meat, veggies, fruit, low fat dairy and whole grains that are closest to their natural state. Nature doesn’t add salt! Packaged, processed foods are high in sodium to preserve them. Read labels carefully, total sodium intake should be 2000 mg or less each day. Don’t skimp on fat – Choose healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds and most importantly, omega 3’s found in fatty fishes such as salmon. Fat is irreplaceable for glowing skin and shiny hair and nails. A no fat diet will leave you looking lusterless and dull. If you don’t like fish, purchase an omega 3 supplement made from fish sources. Choose almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and green olives for snacks. ■ Gillian Proctor, Registered Dietitian Fuel Nutrition Consulting www.fuelnutritioncalgary.com

Fit to be Wed nce that ring is on your finger and the date is set, the countdown to the most important day of your life is on. As the day draws nearer, the desire to look your best for the wedding becomes more and more pressing. Bridal Fantasy spoke to fitness guru, Clinton Wasylishen, founder of Survivor Boot Camp (www.survivorbootcamp.com), and got some great advice to help anyone, achieve their best body.

O

BF: In order to achieve optimal results, how many months prior to their wedding should one start working out and why? Survivor Boot Camp: This is a complicated question to answer, but the sooner that anyone can start, the better. Many brides are focused on losing weight for their big day, but the goal should be to be healthy first and foremost. The goal shouldn't be to lose ten pounds to look good in that dress, but to maintain a strong, lean and healthy body indefinitely. Weddings are endurance events, so the training should start sooner rather than later. BF: In your opinion, what's the best recipe for weight-loss and toning success? Survivor Boot Camp: Weight loss and toning are very closely related. The key is that everything is connected; working out alone will not bring you the success that you desire. A solid workout routine mixed with good eating and healthy living will produce the best results. Nutrition is critical to your success, and it can

not be overlooked. Eliminate liquid calories (pop, juice or high calorie coffee drinks) replace with between two and three litres of water daily. Try to consume clean calories that are low in saturated fat and high in fibre. Use weight bearing resistance exercises to boost your metabolism to burn calories throughout the day. One of the largest misconceptions my clients have is strength training will produce large muscle mass - not the case. In order to tone and improve their metabolism, resistance training is critical. Cardio, strength, flexibility and good nutrition all play a key role in helping someone reach their goal. BF: Do you have any suggestions for how to get and stay motivated to work out? Survivor Boot Camp: Keep your goal front and center. Keep a photo of a physique you aspire to in front of you at all times. Listen to motivational CD's in your car. Think positively. We can talk ourselves out of anything. Keep your workout gear in your car at all times so there are no excuses when you try to make

them (we all do). Reward yourself for milestones reached. Subscribe to a fitness magazine, buy a workout video, or get a new nutrition book. Rewards should work with you, not against you, in attaining your goal. For instance, a hot fudge sundae provides nothing but glut and guilt. BF: Are there specific areas a bride should focus on when working out? Survivor Boot Camp: A bride should feel like the belle of the ball for that entire day. No one can outshine the bride if the shine comes from within. If the bride has been working out for three months with this day in mind, odds are she is feeling on top of the world. We should all spend more time on the exercises we don't like because they are usually the ones we need. Depending on the dress, arms, chest, back and abs are very important. If removing the garter is going to give people an eyeful then legs and calves come into play. The most important message here is that "spot reduction" is a myth - so the bride needs to focus on the entire package. BF: Are there specific areas a groom should focus on when working out? Survivor Boot Camp: Grooms enjoy the luxury of remaining fully dressed throughout the day and so the pressure for them can be perceived as less. Grooms need to focus on their entire physique as well but specifically I would suggest abs, glutes and arms because these are where the bride's focus may be. Endurance training is also important. â–

Music

Matters Your wedding gown is perfect, the colours are beautiful but it’s the music at your reception that really makes your wedding memorable. Music is a key factor throughout the entire day. It should be a reflection of your personalities. The music matters so make it count. Here are some of the major music mistakes and how to keep them from happening at your wedding. Don’t forget about the time at your ceremony before the ceremony actually starts. Your guests will be waiting – getting seated, visiting with family and friends they haven’t seen – don’t keep them in silence. Soft music playing beforehand is a great way to keep the mood light without awkward silence. Keep it consistent with the other songs you have chosen for your ceremony but don’t feel you have to go strictly classical. DO NOT skip the sound check! Carefully assess your settings when you coordinate with readers and performers. Check with the location manager because they will have the experience with the space and its limitations. You don’t want to lose any music in the space. The first dance that never ends is the worst first dance. Pay careful attention to the length of the song you have chosen. Time the song and practice dancing to it. Work with your DJ if it is too long, they can cut it down to a reasonable length. While your friends and family love to party, and there is usually a fair amount of alcohol flowing at a wedding, this doesn’t mean your reception should turn into a college party. If the music is too loud, the older guests in the crowd can get frustrated and it prevents normal conversation. Talk to the DJ – let them know what is acceptable for what part of the night. While you and your finace may be huge fans of Nirvana (you own everything they ever DID!) it’s not appropriate to have four hours of it. Including your favourite band or genre is good – but in moderation. You want everyone to enjoy the night! ■

Pimp My Wedding Ride TRANSPORTATION CONSIDERATIONS rrive at the altar in style. Having a limousine service for transportation on your wedding day will give you the freedom to be anywhere, anytime. Consider the following before booking your ride:

A

What type of limo do you need? Limousines are a way for all members of your wedding party or family to travel together. Limo companies offer a wide range of vehicle choices, including sedans, stretch limos, stretch SUVs, Escalades, and even buses. Before you book, consider how many people you want to travel with and what style you like best. What are the costs? In terms of payment, limo companies may operate slightly differently. Most companies will require a booking for a minimum number of hours, most do not include tax or gratuity in their prices, and some require large deposits. Before you book, find out whether a deposit is required, how much it is, and if it’s refundable. You should also ask if the price is based on specific pick-up and drop-off locations or if you can go anywhere during the time you book. Keep in mind that shopping for price alone could leave you frustrated or disappointed on your wedding day.

What are the rules? Limousines can make the biggest day of your life a lot more fun! You can cruise around town with your closest friends, enjoy a glass of champagne, and listen to your own personal wedding mix while driving. Before you book find out if food and beverages are permitted, if there are passenger limits, if you can you open the sunroof, and if you’ll be allowed to play CDs or DVDs. Do your research! Each limo company will have different styles of vehicles. Search online to find a list of potential companies, view their websites, and look at their vehicle pictures. Before you book, you might even want to go see the actual limo you will be riding in. You wouldn’t want a 1988 limousine showing up that smells like last night’s party. Hiring a limo for your wedding should be special and exciting. Follow the above guidelines and you’ll have a stylish and stress free ride on your wedding day. ■

Planning Perfection Why Wedding Planners Are In Demand Wedding planners are truly the answer to stress-free wedding day bliss. Bridal Fantasy spoke with several experienced wedding planners about what their profession has to offer. What is the most unique thing you’ve ever done for a wedding as a planner? “In every wedding we plan, we add special surprise touches for the couple. This could be flying in exquisite golden tiger figurines to use as cake toppers, creating hand crafted chandeliers for a stunning effect, stringing handmade lantern garlands above the dance floor, or providing custom-made snowflake cookies for favours. We really like to go above and beyond expectations by adding these surprises that are much appreciated. The smiles on the faces of the bride and groom are worth it every time!” Karen Leitch & Jennifer Kinal, Fresh Look Event Management www.freshlookevents.com What are the benefits of hiring a wedding planner? “A wedding planner becomes your confidant in the wedding planning process; someone who never gets tired of hearing about your wedding, is always excited about all the details, takes your vision and gives it life, and eases your stress by managing your wedding detail by detail so that you don’t get overwhelmed. A wedding planner will be able to give you fresh ideas that you may not think of, at the same time giving you creative options that work within your budget. Planners have plenty of connections with and knowledge about your local wedding industry. They can help you find the perfect match for everything from your photography to your décor needs. A wedding planner knows how to manage the planning details and meet deadlines and overcome the family/cultural/religious concerns that may arise.” Jolyn Saramaga, Nuance Occasions www.nuanceoccasions.com 176 Bridal Fantasy 2009

What type of bride could use a wedding planner? “Every bride can use a wedding planner! We are not there just to book your vendors and coordinate your day. We help you design, develop, and create your theme, thereby creating the atmosphere that you and your guests will remember forever. We go to appointments with you, ask questions of vendors that you may not know to ask and spend tireless hours researching the perfect details that will make your day originally yours. We become your partner and friend in the planning process. What bride couldn't use another set of eyes and ears during the planning of one of the most amazing days in her life?” Jennifer Tavaroli, Atmosphere Wedding Planning and Design www.atmosphereweddings.ca

Are wedding planners expensive? “The common thought on wedding planners is that they are very expensive and are only for brides who have very large budgets. Every bride can benefit from a wedding planner; every bride should be able to afford a wedding planner. Packages and stand-alone services, like day-of assistance, can be adjusted to fit any budget. A good wedding planner will be able to work with you to come up with services that fit both your needs and your budget.” Jasmine Esau, Reflections Wedding Designs www.reflectionsweddingdesigns.com

Aisling

Slattery

on Weddings, Love & What Makes Her Relationship Work eddings bells have been ringing for Citytv’s Breakfast Television News Anchor, Aisling Slattery, since fall. Lucas Tomei, the love of Aisling’s life, proposed to her in magnificent Montreal on the twenty-fourth of October on a whirlwind romantic six day get-away, which included Montreal and the quaint Québec City.

W

hen asked to tell us a little bit about her fiancé, Aisling did not need much prompting. “Lucas is the most caring, compassionate, sensitive, patient and considerate man I’ve ever met. He’s the full package! He’s an avid runner, musically inclined guitarist and an amazing cook. He’s super tall, 6’ 5”, which is great for this 5’ 10 1/2” gal.”

Shooting Aisling for the cover of Bridal Fantasy Magazine was fantastic. She was a natural, most likely due to her on-air experience. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she’s even prettier in person. After the shoot, Bridal Fantasy got the scoop on Aisling’s wedding plans, her man and what makes her relationship work.

Hair: Red Bloom Salon Dress: S2 Bride Jewelry: Bridal Fantasy

BF: To date, what wedding arrangements have you made?

BF: When you have an argument, how do your resolve it?

Aisling: Our photographer, Andras Schram, is booked. We’re using Spoonful of Sugar Invitations for our invites, and I’ve had an initial consult with a florist. The dress is bought! We’ve chosen the bridal party, selected the church, met with the priest. We are even booked for pre-marriage counselling. We’ve also contacted a couple musical bands. Our engagement party is coming up in January! We’ve contacted a cake lady and that’s about it. We’re still debating on colours, bridesmaid dresses and the groom and groomsmen outfits.

Aisling: Lucas is incredibly patient with me. If we have an argument, his logical thinking and coping skills kick in automatically. He's amazing at rationalizing a situation and getting things cooled down. If I have a problem, he will never leave it until it's resolved. We really do try to talk to each other about everything, and I feel really comfortable coming to him about anything that's on my mind.

BF: What are you most excited about when it comes to the wedding? Aisling: Being surrounded by our closest friends and family who love and support Lucas and me, and of course having a really great party! BF: When you met your fiancé, was it love at first sight? Aisling: NO!!!!! Lucas and I first met years before, back when we both played U of C Dino Club Volleyball. We never really found each other interesting or attractive for that matter. My best friend Jessica had run track and field with Lucas for years, and Lucas and I had been to mutual events together but never once bothered talking to one another or even glancing in each other's direction. It wasn't until years later, when I had moved back to Calgary to continue my career and Lucas had finished up law school and back starting his career in Calgary, that we were interested in each other. When we actually started dating, Jessica's Mum dug up old pictures of Lucas and I standing side by side at Jessica's birthday party, and still neither of us have any recollection of the other at the time. Timing is weird. BF: What makes your relationship work? Aisling: Incredible amounts of patience, support and encouragement. We both know when the others spirits need to be lifted. It's not uncommon for Lucas to work twelve to fourteen hour days, especially at this point in his career. So during those times I help him out; bring him dinner at work, help him keep his life in order so he can focus on what he needs in the moment. When the tables are turned, Lucas is right there, cooking me dinner, picking up groceries, etc. It's very balanced.

goes a long way. At this point in our lives, we are both building our careers, and we are both passionate career people. It's really easy to balance when both partners want the same thing professionally and personally and are willing to support the other in the goal. ■

BF: How do you ensure balance when it comes to your career and relationship? Aisling: In our situation it can be really hard. My Breakfast Television news anchor schedule means I'm up at 3:30 am every day. And for Lucas, working until 2 in the morning can happen several times a week. There are days we won’t even see each other. We're really trying to be effective communicators, and are in contact as much as possible. We also set out expectations for one another. Lucas will let me know his schedule for the week, and I the same, which gives us the opportunity to plan for when we'll see each other next. It means we always have something to look forward to.
