THE PANDEMIC MEMORIAL: PERSPECTIVES FROM THE YOUTH

PEARLS OF WISDOM BY AR. RAFIQ AZAM

AN INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION The inception of the theme‘The Pandemic Memorial: of remembrance and reflections’ emerged as a response to this global phenomenon that has transformed the face of the earth.

The boundaries of Nation States blurred- with the collective challenges faced, the common adversities undergone, and the trauma felt. Yet, we unitedly yearn for a better tomorrow, the yearning that appears as a glint of hope at the end of this seemingly indefinite tunnel.

How could we emerge wiser, more resilient, deriving from the synergy of this shared experience? Could we in some way preserve the lessons learnt, the realizations formed; treasure memories of lives lost and commemorate the new identities we donned during the Pandemic?

The Memorial Brief specified an installation or a designed built/unbuilt space that would be located in an urban centre.

Participants could choose a strategic site in any urban centre with valid reasoning for the selection. It could be an abstract expression like an urban installation that encapsulates powerful memories or, sculpture in urban context.

The competition was open to students of Architecture, Design and all connected disciplines and we were overwhelmed to receive 70+ entries from India and a few from abroad. The Mega Design Jury on Day 3 of the conference was the culmination of this heartening process with 6 Finalists presenting their design entries in a nail-biting session.

Design of the built environment must allow for natural withering . Look at the human body, the hair, the fingers, the fingernails. They recede and almost disappear, as though speaking with the wind. We all must disappear and merge with the nature one day. Architecture must allow for that.

THE ONLINE MEDIUM OF THE CONFERENCE PAVES WAY FOR GREEN EVENTS Events have been paramount to our culture, like never before. They are open to a large and diverse range of audiences; deploy large amounts of resources like energy, water and waste in a shorter time span thus leaving a big impact.

Adapting to the new normal, the pandemic outbreak in 2020, left us facing our screens on Zoom attending events virtually. With the green building movement and cities adopting green and resilient strategies to combat climate

change, the virtual conference hosted by SMEFs Brick school of Architecture, Pune left a green impact by saving 46tons of CO2 emissions. The average Annual Carbon Footprint of an Indian Citizen (based on 20042005 National GHG Inventory data) is estimated to be 1.6 tons of CO2e/year which means the online platform not only helped the institution save annual emissions of 29 Indian citizens but also helped them

align with their conference goals. Adopting greener and sustainable practices for green events will not only assist in dealing with climate change but will also pave way for a greener circular economy. In-person events will always have their own charm but now they can be augmented with an online version that provides a broader reach, experience and a 99% lower carbon footprint.

ENERGY OF THE CONFERENCE The International Conference Seminar on ‘Blurred Boundaries: In search of an Identity’ was very well arranged by Brick School, and the selection of the topics and Speakers was absolutely relevant to the subject.

This first-ever international conference by Brick gained immense recognition in the academic circle, and helped us to add to the existing knowledge and data for global students in the architecture and design fields.

The Conference was an attempt to seek answers to pressing issues stemming from regional identities within a larger global consciousness. This platform facilitated a much needed discourse on Identity and harmonious approaches for a resilient future.
