Fostering Independence and Self-Confidence for Son Oliver
Seeing an Impact as a Teacher, Sister, and Mother
Gaining Essential Skills for College Readiness and Success
Welcome Letter: Head of School
Dear Briarwood and Tuttle Families, Alumni, and Friends,
The 2023–2024 school year reflected our community’s strength, heart, and generosity. From classrooms filled with discovery to campus events full of connection, we witnessed our mission come to life daily. As always, our purpose remained clear: to teach students the way they learn best and to create a place where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.
Throughout the year, your support created a meaningful impact. You gave generously to the Annual Giving Fund, helping us provide professional development, updated classroom materials, expanded programs, and the flexibility to meet emerging student needs. Your gifts directly shaped student experiences and strengthened our ability to deliver personalized, high-quality instruction.
We also welcomed families, alumni, and friends to campus in new and joyful ways. Our first-ever on-campus gala, the Denim and Diamonds Gala, was a highlight of the year. The evening brought our community together in a fun and familiar setting to celebrate our shared purpose and raise essential funds for both schools.
The event’s success reflected the commitment and dedication of our volunteers, donors, and attendees.
Alongside these celebrations, we continued to invest in our students.
Faculty trained in multisensory math instruction and implemented the Wilson Reading System to strengthen literacy across grade levels. We reimagined classroom spaces, created a new sensory room at Tuttle, and welcomed new families into our community who immediately felt the impact of our individualized approach.
This annual report honors the people who make this possible. Every donor listed in the following pages helped build confidence, community, and opportunity for our students. Your generosity reflects a shared belief in our mission and in the potential of every learner who walks through our doors. We look forward to sharing more stories about your impact in this summer’s Mustang Review.
Thank you for your support, your trust, and your continued commitment to Briarwood and Tuttle. Together, we create a place where transformation happens every day.

An Everlasting Impact
By Jared Scott Tesler
Since their founding in 1967, The Briarwood and Tuttle Schools, two schools serving different student populations on the same campus, have been united and guided by one mission: to teach children the way they learn best, ultimately empowering them to reach their full potential, academically, socially, and emotionally.
The schools—and their mission—were directly inspired by founders Dave Streit and Yvonne Tuttle Streit’s own personal mission to find the right school for
their young daughter with unique learning needs. Today, Briarwood and Tuttle continue to provide child-focused diagnostic and prescriptive instruction and holistic support for students with languagebased learning differences and intellectual and developmental disabilities. From individualized instruction, to a supportive, nurturing environment, to a sense of belonging, whatever their reason for choosing Briarwood and Tuttle, one thing is for certain: Students and families remain positively impacted by the schools throughout their journey on campus and long after they leave.
Shelly Dompier Mulanax, ’87: A Lifelong Passion Ignited at Briarwood
Shelly Dompier Mulanax, ’87, arrived at Briarwood in seventh grade. Due to health issues related to asthma, she spent many days sick at home and in the hospital but still managed to keep up with her schoolwork (“If I had attended public school,” she shares, “I likely wouldn’t have been able to pass”). At Briarwood, Mulanax quickly developed tight-knit, longlasting friendships with Kim O’Neal, ’87, Sheryl Strong, ’87, and Jennifer Vastola, ’87, who returned to Briarwood in 2017 as a Lower School T.O.P.S. teacher. She credits her drama teacher and mentor, Barbara Lassiter, with igniting her passion for theatre.
Indelibly inspired by Briarwood’s theatre program, Mulanax’s motto is to “reach for the stars.” “Briarwood instilled in me the belief that I could accomplish anything and be whoever I wanted to be,” says Mulanax, who would go on to earn her college
degree in fine arts and theatre arts. “Despite facing health challenges, I learned that nothing could hold me back.” These days, the busy mother of three (Allie, Abbie, and Cameron) fulfills her passion for the performing arts and her love of working with children as a board member of Theatre Under The Stars and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where she serves on the Grand Entry, Mutton Bustin’, Paint Horse, Special Children’s, Tours, and Trailblazer committees.
This spring, Mulanax, who is also a board member of the Kelsey Research Foundation and R.E. “Bob” and Vivian L. Smith Foundation, will receive the Shirley Stein Outstanding Champion of the Arts and Education Award at Theatre Under The Stars’ 2025 Leading Ladies Luncheon. And in November, she and husband Jerome—the couple met just two years after she graduated from Briarwood— will celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary.
Alexandra “Alex” Inman: Faculty and Staff Who Are There for Daughter Emma
For Alexandra “Alex” Inman, the best part of The Tuttle School is the confidence of knowing that her daughter, Emma, is in good hands. “Emma’s teacher, Mrs. Matthews, always approaches challenges with a positive attitude and navigates through difficulties with a smile,” Inman says. “[Director] Beverly Brinkmeyer is incredibly caring and very encouraging about our day-today challenges. And the school nurse handles everything with kindness, grace, patience, and understanding and is well-informed about the medical needs of our community.”
Thanks to some flexible adjustments to accommodate her unique needs, and a little guidance from her physical therapist, The Tuttle School has made a major difference in Emma’s growth and development. “Tuttle’s cohesive team of faculty and staff can adjust and shift gears while still providing challenges to Emma. They ensure that she’s both supported and pushed academically within a nurturing environment,” Inman says. “Emma’s face lights up when we pull into school. She’s genuinely excited to go in, and I’m very grateful for that experience.”
Before arriving at Briarwood in fourth grade, Kate Mills’ son, Oliver, diagnosed with a language-based learning difference and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), struggled to complete his homework assignments. “A good friend referred me to a center that found a wonderful person to help him with homework, impulsivity, and attention issues,” Mills recalls. “The center suggested that Briarwood was the answer.” Once he enrolled there, Oliver began receiving homework help during after-school hours—which, Mills says, has greatly improved the family’s home life as well as Oliver’s stress level and overall mood.
Kate Mills: Fostering Independence and Self-Confidence for Son Oliver
Briarwood’s small class sizes have supported Oliver’s individual needs and made him feel comfortable contributing to class discussions. While Oliver has become excited about reading (one of his teachers recently chose a book for the class focused on his number-one interest— insects), his mother is thrilled with the positive turn his education has taken. “He now loves math and excels at it. When I observe him doing homework, it’s comparable to what students do in other college-preparatory schools,” Mills says. “He’s learned to excel on his own. It’s done wonders for his self-confidence.”
Chandra Hall-Dixon: Seeing an Impact as a
Teacher, Sister, and Mother
Tuttle art teacher Chandra HallDixon has witnessed the impact of a Briarwood and Tuttle education not only as a faculty member but also as the sibling of an alumnus and the parent of a current student. “When I decided to teach, there was no other place to teach but Tuttle—mainly because of the impact it had on my brother,” Hall-Dixon recalls. “That impact alone has been extremely beneficial for him, because it gave him the tools to be a successful adult, including a wonderful work ethic (he loves his job and never wants to take a day off), accountability, and responsibility.”
The recipient of a first-place Creative Education Institute Creative Writing Award in fourth grade and named Eighth Grade Student of the Year at the 2023 Middle School Academic Awards Ceremony, Hall-Dixon’s daughter, Channing, is currently a sophomore at Briarwood. “Once she became a student, I saw the impact from the Briarwood side—which was just as impressive as the Tuttle side,” Hall-Dixon says. “It was an
immediate turnaround. She became more confident, happy, a completely different kid. Briarwood has given her a stage to shine, a spotlight to show who she is, and the freedom and resources to feel like she can learn just like everyone else.” Once afraid to come out of her shell, the shy little girl who arrived at Briarwood in first grade is now beaming with confidence and feeling comfortable and supported in her abilities both in and out of school.
Evan Kelly, ’12: Gaining Essential Skills for College Readiness and Success
In 2017, Evan Kelly, ’12, returned to Briarwood to speak to Upper School students, parents, teachers, and counselors, sharing the value and impact of a Briarwood education and the details of his individual college journey. Among Kelly’s favorite faculty members were art teacher Mitzi Prince and science teacher Darrell Causey Jr., whose trebuchet project was a standout. Briarwood prepared him well for higher education, he says: “The writing class I took taught me how to map out how to write a paper, with bullet
points that end up as sentences and subtopics that become paragraphs. I took that with me and just kept with it in college.”
“I think that the everlasting type of skill that Briarwood provided Evan with is self- advocacy. He carries that with him even today in his academic and personal interactions. I would say the ability to self-advocate is something that Briarwood really stressed for Evan and he really lives up to that.”
MICHELLE
FRIEDMAN, Evan’s Mom
Kelly would go on to earn not only a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Trinity University but also a doctoral degree in planetary science from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa’s School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology. A former laboratory technician at multinational oil and gas corporation ExxonMobil, he is currently developing instruments for future planetary exploration as a NASA Postdoctoral Program Fellow at the Goddard Space Flight Center.
