TRANSFORMATION |

A Green House Contemplation

Transformation is based on the interior green houses of the PC Caritas Belguim campus. These greenhouse created a sense of enclosure within a run down classical structure on a large medical campus.

Transformation represents the movement from traditional to modern. I imagined what would happen if the elements of the greenhouse were deconstructed to create a private space, as the materials are removed from the original form they are transformed and utilized as something for the inhabitant to use. The greenhouse transforms into a functional space for the inhabitant rather than the cold glass box that it began as. The elements begin to overlap with the masonry structure as the form moves with the inhabitants, creating a physical barrier of privacy and allowing the visitor a moment of clarity, of silence, and peace. A place for them to transform.

This Auto-Ethnography is based on my Day-to-Day experience during the pandemic. The majority of which happened in my studio apartment and the mode of traslation was the scents I experiecned on a Day-toDay basis. Each scent correlates to a color, and each color sets a tone for that space. The different items that create scents very from candles

and diffusers to my cooking the bath & body products I use. Each of these scents alters the space in an ethereal way rahter than a physical. In my home the scent englufs the small space, envoking emotion and comfort, these scents translate themselves onto each surface. The scents transform the space and the experience within.

BUILDING SYSTEMS & COLLECTIVITY |

UNM Fine Arts Library

Building Systems Through Collectivity is a study of inportant collective spaces and the reaction to those spaces during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

This project focuses on the Fine Arts Library at the University of New Mexico located at top of the School of Architecture & Planning. This space is significant to the enitre campus and is very popular amongst the entire student body.

Like most collective spaces the Library was closed at the start of the pandemic and has yet to be reopened.

DISTRIBUTION The first step of my design was to remove the entire roof to create an open air space and allow for overall ventilation. Next I enclosed two locations for book storage and distribution seen in green.

POD SANITATION The next step was to design individual hermetically sealed study pods which were strategicaly placed to dissolve the feeling of complete isolation.

Each pod is equiped with a self cleaning funtion which the release of nitric oxide or a similar anit-bacterial gaswould cleanse the individual pods in between uses. The pod would not be available again until the gas wasVented completely from the space.

MATERIAL DISINFECTION Once a visitor is finished with a material, they return the item to one of these disinfecting drawers, the drawers act as ovens ciruclating hot air around the materials in order to clean but not harm them.

This type of technology is often utilized following infestations.

COLLECTIVE LIVING+ The Apocalypse Collective Living+ The Apocalypse is based on a syllabus I authored and is meant to highlight the need for self suffieciency rather than the Doom and Gloom often associated with “The Apocalypse”.

The community provides necessary services to the area as well as encouraging locals to learn the practices themselves.

The project is contained within half of a city block in Downtown Albuquerque, New Mexico along Historic Route 66.

This location provides access to bus and rail lines as well as two major interstates. These are important factors in the transportation of matrials needed in the community.

The courtyard form allows the community to be locked down at any moment and provide a buffer between the bustle of downtown.

The community serves as a place to live and learn and work to ensure a strong future as well as to educate others on the importance of self sufficiency.

DAY-TO-DAY OPERATIONS The most important part of the community is the program.

The building contains all necessities of day to day life including; A Butcher, Canner, Brewery, Tannery, Water Purification, Animal Husbandry, rooftop farm as well as market for the community members to give back to the locals. There is also a fully equiped underground portion which contains hydroponic garden entertainment and bunker spaces.

LIFE SKILLS & SELF-SUFFICIENCY In the modern its uncommon to come across many people who can fully provide for themselves. A program like this allows for the ecouragement and life skills needed to survive. Not just for the apocalypse but for any major emergency or societal downfall. The community provides a place for lives to change and society to grow.

MODERN BATH AND TATTOO The purpose of this project was to contain both a tattoo parlor and a bath house. The concept behind the design was to use the exterior façade as a sort of tattoo upon the interiors of the baths. This use of ornament gave the word tattoo a double meaning. The patterns represent an abstract pixilation of water. Pixelization was a strategy used to organize the building and its overall modular layout. This modular use allowed for different programs to blend and interact while still providing a safe and sterile environment when needed.

The stacked forms allowed light to activate the shadows which were then cast not only onto the building interiors but the existing structures surrounding the site.

AUGMENTED SPACES In this CRAF+T based studio we each chose and developed an architectural element through various periods of development. My research centralized around fabric cast concrete and the both organic and structural applications of the method. After A series of pours and molds, I chose to 3D print a set of modules I designed utilizing an organic formwork of the strogest structural shapes, the triangle and the x, along with a set of straight pieces. These shapes allowed for an organic network of augmented structural “branches” to be utilized in many structural and design applications. Using these units I constructed multiple iterations of “wall panel” systems. In reality the modules would be fabric cast, concrete piping.

The application in which the units could be used in agricultural, plant bearing scenarios. For the final step of the project I chose to implement the system on an existing structure, allowing the panel system to weave in and out of the floors, integrate itself, the modules were used in an exterior/ interior application rahter than a structural systme within the walls and carry the water being collected in the cistern on the roof in order to sustain the greenery being circulated through out the building. This application created a lush vertical park like environment within an existing urban setting.

An Excursion into Nuclear History | Research Library & Mobile Lab Repository

TRINITY is a monument to those who worked on the Manhattan Project. Not only those in charge, or those who built the bomb, but to those who maintained their facilities, cleaned their homes and watched their children. The assistants, the maintence crews and the civilians in both Los Alamos and Alamagordo, each within their own limited frame of knowledge we’re essential to the development of the Atomic Bomb. Each directed view is representative of the perspective of those who contributed. TRINITY is a modern research excursion for scientists and civilians alike. Its structure consists of glass panels to protect the charred soil and a series of viewpoints located along the burned edge of the blast radius. The site is over 1,000 feet wide and encroaches upon approximately 800,000 sqaure feet of the white sands missile range.

Research Library and Mobile Lab Repository

The Trinity Research Center and Mobile Lab Repository celebrates and allows for international study of nuclear technology and its after effects. The center contains a research library and storage facility oribiting the original trinity blast crater. The crater signifies the point of impact on both the earth and history in which the human population became both facinated and terrified of atomic reactions. This purpose of the center is to remediate through the education and understanding of nuclear tech. Through this knowledge only will the world ever truely know the capabilites of these technologies. In a world with too many wars, how can this research help to rectify previous problems and create new opportunities for understanding.

A Walk through Time and Culture

Connecting cultures, the river’s historical morphology shapes three paths to create an autonomous threshold. Autonomy of countries, of ethnicities, of origin. En esto espacio son el corezon de dos caras y lados, aqui son de la misma material.

Camino cultura represents and tracks two countries histories, the people it impacted, and blurs the tension the border causes between families, politics, and heritages through an intertwined set of encounters and meeting points. Parks, pocket gardens, vendedoras, reunion points, and places of visual escape and connectivity that is not interrupted by bordered separation are all programmatically incorporated into the intertwined set of bridges that unites the U.S and Mexico. A project proposed by the ABARA coalition to utilize the historic infrastructure remaining on the site of Onates Crossing on the U.S. Mexico Border between El Paso, TX, and Juarez, MEX. Our group chose to leave all structures intact, while adapting them to modern uses including Apartments, Office Space, Gallery and Outdoor meeting space for the Client.
