A new Mission Statement… The Purpose of the Greater Scottsville Chamber of Commerce is to Promote, to Encourage, to Protect and to Educate the business community of Scottsville and its greater surrounding area.

These are not just new words, but a fresh foundation guiding us to serve our membership and to help enhance our community. By expanding our coverage to include a twenty mile radius we will be better able to service our core – Scottsville.

Historical park depictEverybody likes ing the transportation history of Scottsville from the era of the Native American Monacan canoes to modern transportation systems. Scottsville’s ‘Harry Potter Halloween’ is an annual town-wide festival created by fans, for fans of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. Downtown Scottsville businesses and organizations transform into familiar establishments of both Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. The event also has a galore of vendors, games, activities and much more during this day of wizarding fun! This year’s event is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, October 28th,2017. Scottsville Celebrating “Bee City” Status in June

by Ron Smith, Correspondent for Scottsville Monthly Bee City U.S.A. is a program that began some 5 years ago in Ashville, North Carolina. Its goal is to promote “ongoing dialogue in urban areas to raise awareness of the role pollinators play in sustaining three quarters of the world’s plant species and what each of us can do to provide them (the pollinators) with healthy habitat.”

In 2012, with the unanimous support of Ashville’s City Council, that city became the first “Bee City” in the United States. The movement began to spread across the country.

There is an application process and many criteria must be net, including approval of the local governing body. If the application is approved, the locality is awarded Bee City status, a designation that carries with it both honor and responsibility.

In April of 2016, local beekeeper Heather Sturtzer began looking into what it would take to make Scottsville a “Bee City”. With Town Council elections on the horizon, she decided to wait until the new administration had taken their elected positions to make a presentation.

After attending a work session of the Council and presenting her proposal, she came away with a feeling of confidence that the Town of Scottsville would back her in this endeavor. She had already begun the necessary paperwork and paid for the application fee wither own funds. At the August meeting of

the Council, the motion was made by Council member Shannon Bostic, who oversees the town’s Farmers Market, to make Scottsville a Bee City. The motion passed unanimously!

Scottsville effectively became number 28 on the list of Bee Cities across the U.S., and the first Bee City in Virginia!

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has expressed interest in the Federal Pollinator Protection Plan and supported a similar plan for Virginia. The Bee City program provides a chance for local involvement in pollinator protection.

Scottsville Center for Arts and Nature since being a Bee City requires, among other things, providing educational programs for the public.

S.C.A.N. owns a parcel of land on Hardware Rd. in Scottsville, and this location provided a perfect setting for establishing bee colonies. Heather was able to secure equipment and bees; two colonies now live on the S.C.A.N. acreage. She has also given over 30 educational lectures on the subject, and is available to help those interested in tending a colony of their

own to get started.

One of the requirements of being a Bee City is to sponsor one event a year related to beekeeping and the importance of all pollinators. National Pollinator Week occurs the third week of June. On June 17th, 2017, Scottsville will sponsor a celebration by having a day of education, fun and bee related activities. There will be lectures, exhibits, games and opportunities to visit the S.C.A.N. hives and have questions answered by people, like Heather, who know what they are doing.

Of course, there will also be honey!

Scottsville Library Renovation Completed

by Ruth Klippstein, Correspondent for Scottsville Monthly The Scottsville branch of the Jefferson Madison Regional Library reopened September 6 after a three week renovation of its 1981 structure. Albemarle County oversaw renovations to the building that were managed by Piney River Construction. The county brought the front doors and bathrooms in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. To enable an upgrade of the wiring, they

removed and replaced the carpet; they reconfigured the office space; and two new water fountains, at heights suitable for adults and children are now in place.

Minimal library services were offered at the library’s temporary location in the old Dollar General building on Valley Street.

Now everything is in high gear; come check it out!

Scottsville Lake & Van Clief Nature Area Open & Developing Hiking & Fishing Available to the Public The Van Clief Nature Area (VCNA) is a 63-acre area of natural beauty, located in the geographic center of Scottsville. Its trails, woodlands, and 5 ½ acre Scottsville Lake provide both habitat for wildlife while offering visitors and townspeople a space to enjoy the wonders of the outdoors.
