But she expected it would have an “R” rating that would restrict the audience to people 18 and over.

“When the rating came out as 18A, that meant any age could come as long as they were accompanied by someone who was 18 or older,” said Proby. “And I can do nothing about it. I have to let them in. I refuse to go there.

“The only way we could not sell a ticket to a minor was to not show the movie to begin with.”

Some critics have taken issue with Proby’s showing American Sniper, a Clint East-

wood-directed movie about the Iraq War, implying she was tolerating violence but not sex.

“We have run sexually risqué movies. But I think most people criticizing American Sniper haven’t seen the movie. It’s not glorifying war.

I find it’s quite the opposite,” she said.

Proby adds that, in any case, children did not come to see the 18A-rated Eastwood film, as she suspected they wouldn’t.

“I wouldn’t want a kid to see Fifty Shades of Grey and I wouldn’t want a kid to see American Sniper either. And they don’t, generally. They don’t want to see that.”

Proby said she’s been running Oscar-nominated films like American Sniper and The Theory of Everything in the run-up to the awards show to be broadcast Feb. 22.

A Sunshine Coast movie theatre operator has brushed aside accusations of censorship and says she won’t run the movie Fifty Shades of Grey only because it’s not suitable for children to see.

Deb Proby, who runs Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt, became the subject of national news stories after she posted on Facebook that she would not be showing the movie, based on the 100-million-selling novel by the same name.

The explicitly erotic fictional story is about a sexual relationship between a female in her early 20s and wealthy businessman Christian Grey, and is peppered with scenes of bondage, dominance and sado-masochism.

Proby said the response to her decision came as a big surprise.

The earth did move on Valentine’s Day for thousands of Sunshine Coast residents when a 3.4-magnitude earthquake shook the Sechelt Peninsula just after 8:12 pm.

Editorial Opinion Fifty Shades of sanctimony For simply choosing not to show the movie Fifty Shades of Grey, Raven’s Cry theatre operator Deb Proby has been taken to task in ways that demonstrate the foibles and shallowness of major news media.

“B.C. Theatre bans Fifty Shades of Grey,” CTV intoned in an online news headline. Global online news put a title on the story using “ban” as well, as did CBC. The CBC’s Vancouver morning radio show also interviewed Proby to have her respond to allegations of “censorship.”

Proby knew she risked being portrayed as a small-town prude when she opted not to bring the movie into her Sechelt film venue.

And in predictably implying she was just that, those news media were glibly playing to a stereotype simply to get online clicks with a misleading headline. “Misleading,” because the text of all those stories actually explained Proby’s principled reasons for not showing the movie, contradicting the headlines’ finger-wagging implications.

Proby saw the film in preview, a privilege accorded to movie house operators, and although she didn’t think it was very good (most critics agree), she planned to show it anyway. She’s no prude, and she has a business to run, and she knew it could be big box office because of the huge success of the trilogy of books by same name.

She also assumed that because of its explicit sexual content, much of it in the mode of sadism and bondage, the movie would have an R rating, meaning only adults could see it. When it inexplicably came out rated 18A, Proby changed her mind, because kids could then see it if accompanied by an adult.

Is that small-minded, prudish, or “banning” by an arbitrary censor? Or is it grounded, sensible, and acting like a wise parent?

None of the news media has taken on the real villain of the piece: Consumer Protection BC, responsible for rating movies publicly shown in the province. What were they thinking?

And consider all the other movies not shown at Raven’s Cry. Hundreds of feature movies are released every year in North America. Proby gets to show perhaps 45. Do we then characterize the films she chooses not to show as being “banned?”

News media that indulge in hypocritical shaming like we’ve seen here should be turning fifty shades of red with embarrassment. Rik Jespersen What do you think? Has the Raven’s Cry Theatre made the right decision in choosing not to show Fifty Shades of Grey in order to prevent those under 18 from seeing it? Letters to the Editor – Opinions BC Ferries “absurd”

(re “Ferry stranded my son”, the Local, Feb. 12) Well said, Ms Mansbridge and MLA Nicholas Simons !

The absurd and irresponsible action by BC Ferries that young Fynn Mansbridge experienced is not unique.

How many citizens and tourists have experienced the frustration of arriving as foot passengers a minute or two past the arbitrary 10 minute cutoff time and having been refused passage on the ferry?

The usual excuse given to the customer by the ticket clerk is “We have no control over the cutoff. It is done by computer at the loading bay.” The policy needs to be changed.

When my family, including a small child, had misunderstood the most recent of many changes to the ferry schedule, and arrived two minutes past the cut off time, we were met with the same treatment. The result was that instead of arriving home in Roberts Creek at a reasonable time for the child to go to bed, we had to wait in Horseshoe Bay for two more hours, on foot and arrived home at nearly eleven pm.

This callous refusal to make a reasonable effort to assist the paying customer illustrates how disconnected our Ferry System is from its responsibility to the public.

The buses should be timed to connect to all of the ferries, not just the Bowen Island one. Where is the common sense in these arbitrary policies?

The BC Ferry system is a service to the tax payers of the province. They are not there merely to keep the employees and the highly paid bureaucrats in business. The service is not optional - it is the only and mandatory extension of the transportation system to both the residents of the Sunshine Coast and the guests who bring revenue to our province.

Keep on them, Mr Simons!

It’s a safety issue

(Sent to BC Ferries, and copied to the Local) Hello. I want to let you know how unconscionable it was for your staff members to leave a child in peril late at night in a different town, all alone. TWICE. You will always defend your policy, and you will always claim to have safety as the first priority. Fine. But as the publiclyfunded service provider, you have a social responsibility to ensure that a child, or senior, or other more vulnerable foot passenger is not left alone when the last ferry of the day -- their only way home -- is sitting right there.

I can only imagine how afraid and frustrated the boy and his family must have been. Your staff knew that the child was on his own.

Your staff knew that refusing him a ticket on to the ferry -his only way home -- would mean that he was alone, late at night, with nowhere to go.

That is criminal, in my mind.

This is a MAJOR safety issue, that you failed to address. In fact, this is a MAJOR safety issue that you CAUSED. Your company must take responsibility for leaving a child in peril. He was not half an hour late, or even ten minutes late. No one would have been held up. And even if they were, if you did a poll of all the passengers on board, and asked, “If given the choice to (a) leave a child alone in peril on the wrong side of the water with no way to get home, or (b) have the last ferry get you home a few minutes late, which option would you choose?” I bet you’d find a whole lot of compassionate concerned people who would want to ensure above all else that the child got safely home. I bet they’d choose option b.

So, it’s time to have a huddle, revisit your policies, and make a plan to ensure that this NEVER happens again.

It will be on you if something happens to a vulnerable per-

son who you left alone late at night, with no way to get home. Because you are the way home, and we rely upon your compassion and common sense customer service in these cases to ensure that the safety of a vulnerable person -- a minor -- is upheld.

Safety is, after all, your first priority.

“Proceed with caution”

(Addressed to the Sechelt mayor and council, and copied to the Local) It appears to the Tuwanek Ratepayers Association (TRA) that ongoing issues submitted by our association to the District of Sechelt have not been fully discussed or understood by some council and staff prior to the making of definitive decisions. The TRA believes our issues have the potential to impact additional areas in Sechelt.

At our most recent TRA meeting our membership discussed council’s decision on February 4, 2015 to waive a Public Hearing and adopt the amendment to the Zoning Bylaw for the Rural Residential 1 (RR1) Zone, Amendment Bylaw 25-265.

Two of our members, both very well respected long term property owners, thought there were similarities in a recent BC Supreme Court decision by Justice McEwan, on January 27, 2015 which favoured a petition from a resident association against the City of Vancouver.

The TRA membership now believes there are also similarities in this court decision. We believe this decision illustrates why council should proceed with caution until all information is clearly and thoroughly discussed in public

The fossil fuel threat

Burning fossil fuels is warming the planet. Rising

temperatures create extreme weather events putting lives and infrastructure at risk. Recent climate studies project up to four feet increased sea levels over the next 50 years, perhaps more.

Winter high tides combined with storm surges already overflow the highway in Davis Bay and push water onto the Boulevard in Sechelt. Imagine what an additional four feet will do. Lower level buildings in Davis Bay will be lost. The highway will need to be relocated. Sechelt, the Land Between Two Waters may become The Land Underwater. Low bank waterfront is imperiled. The enormous costs of reconstruction and mitigation will be borne by citizens, not from the profits of the fossil fuel industry.

Building pipelines and port facilities to send diluted tar sands bitumen, supply LNG plants and tankers and thermal coal overseas is pure folly. The expensive infrastructure requires 40 to 60 years to recoup costs creating an economic imperative to ramp up gas fracking, poisoning people, land and water and increase strip mining of the tar sands, a permanent scar visible from space for thousands of years. Weeds franchise to proceed with opening

The manager of the planned medical marijuana dispensary in Sechelt says he will go ahead with opening a store on Wharf Ave. and that the owner will challenge the RCMP in court if police attempt to shut them down.

Weeds manager Robin Kehler and owner Donald Briere went to the District of Sechelt Feb. 12 hoping to get a business licence but were told their application was not approved.

“We went to our meeting Thursday afternoon only to be handed a rejection letter without a meeting. There was absolutely no discussion about this,” Kehler said.

Mayor Bruce Milne said later the request for a licence was denied, “because of the illegal nature of the proposed business.”

Milne said he was following the lead of the local RCMP, which made it clear last week that what the Weeds store had planned to do contravenes the Criminal Code.

“Enforcement action will be taken if a dispensary opens in Sechelt,” added Mohr.

But Kehler said it’s Brier’s intention to go ahead anyway.

“Don has made it perfectly clear: we’ll see you in court if you bust the store. No question about it,” Kehler said in a Feb. 13 interview with The Local.

Kehler would not say if or when the Weeds franchise at 5536 Wharf would start dispensing marijuana and said that although they’d prefer the store had a business licence, they will run it as a society for the time being.

“As a society, we can still operate,” said Kehler. “That’s what we were trying to get across to the District: we are a society first and foremost, a [provincially] registered, incorporated society for the last two years.

“It is our intention to start recruiting new members pretty darn quickly... to get our membership to grow before we even start opening our doors.”

Briere’s company operates several Weeds franchises in Vancouver, which are among the more than 60 dispensaries under various ownerships in the city.

At around 8 pm on February 14, emergency personnel on the Sunshine Coast were called to a single vehicle collision on the Sunshine Coast Highway north of Madeira Park. In addition to RCMP and the Fire Department, 2 ambulances and an air ambulance also responded.

driver was transported to hospital and released shortly afterwards.

Also in the van was a 23 year old female, who had been riding in the back without a seatbelt, because there were only 2 seats in the vehicle. When the van hit the rock wall, the female was ejected through the windshield. She was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with serious injuries and underwent a lengthy surgery, but has since regained consciousness.

“This is a reminder of the devastating results of both impaired driving and not wearing a seatbelt,” said Cst Harrison Mohr with Sunshine Coast RCMP. “Seat belts save lives, that’s the bottom line.

We wish the young woman a full recovery, and hope others think twice before going anywhere without their seatbelt on.”

The driver of the van had an odour of liquor on his breath and admitted to consuming liquor during the evening. After failing a roadside screening device, the driver was detained for an impaired driving investigation, and taken to the Sechelt detachment for further breath testing. He was released from custody that night.

The RCMP’s Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) are assisting members of the Sunshine Coast RCMP and RCMP Traffic Services with the investigation. Police may recommend charges of impaired driving at a later date.

In my last column I discussed the structure and process for making Council decisions. I outlined our new committee structure and how deliberations would lead to Council decisions. This month I will review how various issues fit into that structure and how we will decide what gets done over our term.

The community always sets the broad agenda for Council. Once identified, community issues are considered and aligned with the specific strategic plan established by Council and refined within the budget process.

Council is currently setting its strategic plan and the 2015 budget. In early February, we had our first strategic planning workshop, under the guidance of John Talbot, who is well known as a skilled facilitator. He knows our community well from his work on the ‘We Envision’ Plan and as a resident of the Sunshine Coast.

The session was structured to identify strategic goals and discuss how Council can work cohesively to provide the best possible community leadership. To allow for honest ‘give and take’ among your seven elected community representatives, the workshop was closed to

the public.

All of Council agreed that our most important goal must be effective governance. This is an essential element in every decision made and every piece of work we do. Providing municipal services and the protection of the public’s interests and assets are the District’s core responsibilities. By focusing on these basics, we are committed to gaining and retaining our community’s trust in the way the District operates.

Economic and community development was also identified as a primary strategic plan goal. The details of what that means and how it can be accomplished within the resources of a municipal government will require much additional work.

Another issue that ranked high was social well-being, which includes strengthening Sechelt’s sense of identity and social connectedness.

Initiatives to strengthen the resilience of our community, such as more vibrant downtown core or the creation of places for community gathering and celebration were identified. Council’s goal would be to support a stronger, more confident Sechelt that is well known, respected and recognized for who we are.

John Talbot will also coordinate the next steps in the strategic planning process, including a closed workshop in early March involving Council and the

District’s management team. This session will discuss how the District’s efforts can be coordinated to help accomplish Council’s strategic directions. Once a strategic plan document is developed, it will come forward for public review and consideration at a Regular Council meeting.

The second filter for determining what gets done is the budget process. The budget reveals what Council really considers a priority issue or key value for our community. It is no accident that policing, sewers and roads are the largest expenditures for local governments. Conversely, if there is little or no budget for an issue or a project, no one can claim that issue has a high priority. Actions (and funding) speak louder than words.

The 2015 budget was developed under the guidance of the previous Council. Our Council readily accepted the general framework of the existing budget, with no tax increases and overall projections for spending. However, as the community called for change in the recent election, the planned expenditures required scrutiny. There have been lengthy discussions as our Council determines the spending that will best meet the needs of our community within the framework of our emerging strategic plan.

I will write about the process of budget review in my next column in March.

Peacefully, at the age of ninety-one, Gordon passed away with his beloved wife Frances at his side. He is survived by his loving family, daughters Anne (David), Susan (Robert), sons Ian (Colleen) and Allan. He will be dearly missed by his sister Elizabeth (Bette), brother in-law Thorne, grandchildren Jennifer, Jessica, Jason, Adam and Arlen, plus five great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Gordon was born in Edmonton and moved with his family to Vancouver in his early teens. After graduating from Kitsilano High School he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served Canada in India and Burma during World War ll. Shortly after his return home Gordon joined the Canada Border Services Agency (Canada Customs and Excise at the time) where he worked for 44 years, retiring in 1987.

The family would like to thank neighbours Jan and Bill, Dave and Pat for their years of friendship and kindness. We would also like to thank the staff at Vancouver Coastal and Help on the Way for their exceptional loving care that allowed Gordon to remain in his home as he wanted.
