that freedom is not free. “Many have lost their lives to protect our freedom and today we honor all those who have given their all to protect this freedom we take for granted.” Guest Speaker Navy Veteran Corpsman, Petty Officer Victor Urena who served in Iraq, was named 2005 Navy Veteran of the Year. The two-time Purple Heart and Silver Star recipient said he was 18 years old when he joined the navy. He defined patriotism as working together and that is what we do in the armed forces. He urged those present to support our veterans and the men and woman in the armed forces. “It’s a privilege to be a veteran,” he said. “I didn’t fight on the front lines. My job was to provide medical support”. He said he was indebted to the marines who saved his life.

Urena served five years in the navy and described the armed forces as being very diverse. He said veterans have one thing in common. “We are veterans!” He said when he was named Sailor of the Year he felt it represented all the men and women in service. NORWALK Over 500 participated in a moving 90 minute tribute to American veterans in a ceremony that took place in front of a display of local Norwalk servicemen and women and from scenes of the attack on New York City on 9/11.
