They’re Tiny But They’re Powerful Little Free Libraries are an idea whose time has come

At a distance, the “library” on the corner of Dallas and Curve Streets looks like a birdhouse. This library can hold about 50 books, free for the borrowing, and is one of five in the Chattanooga area.

People from Anchorage to New Zealand have built these boxes, stewarding small libraries in their neighborhoods and registering their location with the nonprofit Little Free Libraries. LFL keeps books in circulation by asking people to leave a book when they take a book.

Trevor Slayton, the local steward of the library, says it ideally lets “people express themselves by sharing books

that meant something to them.” But it also promotes literacy by placing books in neighborhoods. (Not to mention that the boxes make some pretty sweet Pinterest photos.)

Slayton has operated two Little Free Libraries in the Northshore for a year. While he’s seen examples of a sharing economy, he’s also discovered people taking three books at a time—withdaniel jackson out leaving books themselves. “The whole idea of sharing books is still very foreign to many people,” he says.

To build the libraries, he approached Home Depot. He needed $400 dollars worth of lumber and paint. Home Depot built the libraries for free because the company will “build anything for vets and kids,” Slayton says.

Hamilton County Read 20, an initiative by the city to promote reading, built several of these kinds of libraries in the city’s recreation centers, according to Slayton. Children of parents who work odd hours are often shuttled to the centers. A library in the rec center provides books “right when these kids get off the bus.”

Corinne Hill, executive director of the Chattanooga Public Library, says, “When I was a teenager, I would read the back of a cereal box.”

For her, growing up surrounded by books was the most natural thing. A Little Free Library, she says, “becomes very personal. It becomes very unique to that block.”

dent on what people put into them. “There’s a place for the randomness,” Hill says.

Andre Harriman inherited his Little Free Library in late spring when the president of the Murray Hills Neighborhood Association moved to Florida. To seed the library for the neighborhood of 478 residents, he spent $20 at McKay Used Books, choosing mysteries, science fiction and religious books from the shelves.

“If it’s unusual, I put it in there,” he says. He once put out a few French novels, and a picture book in Spanish, and those disappeared.

He keeps a stack of books in his garage, and if a book has been sitting in the library, he’ll rotate it. He trades for new titles at McKay. He visits his neighborhood Little Free Library every couple of weeks. In the spring, he will probably give the Little Free Library a new coat of paint.

A couple of metal benches sit next to the library. When he drives by, he’s seen people sitting by the library with their children, reading.

Stunning new exhibit at the Hunter celebrates editorial photography

T

he new exhibit “New York Times Magazine Photographs,” which opened at the Hunter Museum Nov. 28 and runs through Mar. 22, engages the viewer with images of startling power and originality. Curated by New York Times Magazine photo editor Kathy Ryan and organized by Aperture Foundation’s Lesley A. Martin, this exhibition explores work published by the magazine during the last 15 years.

Over 100 photos, taken by 35 photographers, are organized into 13 sections that reveal the surprising range of creative expression possible with the camera. The finest photographers from around the world explore subjects as diverse as the humanitarian crisis in Darfur, the world of high fashion, the Olympics, the war in Iraq, and celebrity portraiture. Their photo essays invariably display the New York Times Magazine’s willingness to push beyond convention and seek a fresh viewpoint.

– Hunter Museum Chief Curator Nandini Makrandi Thanks to the creativity of the photographers, the camera’s expressive potential is readily apparent. However, if the photography of these modern masters is individual in its vision, photojournalism itself is a corporate process.

A unique feature of this exhibition is the way it documents how the photo essays seen in the magazine come into being, how photographers are chosen for assignments, and how, through careful selection and thoughtful presentation, a visual story is honed by the magazine editors.

We see not only published photos, but also the many that did not make the editorial cut. Tearsheets show how the photos that ran in the magazine actually looked in print. As Nandini Makrandi points out, “Normally those editorial decisions are hidden, but in this exhibit they are brought out for the viewer’s consideration.”

An examination of just a few of the photographs in the exhibition will serve to illustrate how the willingness of the magazine’s editors to take chances often results in images that are unforgettable.

For over 40 years, the legendary Brazilian photographer and environmentalist Sebastiao Salgado has documented the lives of people all over the world with powerful black-and-white images. In 1991, with the U.S. and its allies about to invade Kuwait, he anticipated events, calling Kathy Ryan the day the war began to ask if he could document the environmental devastation he was sure would occur. Hurrying to the Mideast, he waited on the Kuwaiti border as the New York Times frantically pressed authorities to allow him access to the oil fields.

Days later he witnessed an inferno—over 100 oil wells in flames and workers struggling heroically to stem the disaster.

Salgado’s black-and-white photos are elemental in their grim power, perfectly expressing the desperate struggle of exhausted men taming the damaged wells.

In 1997, for a very different project, “Assignment: Times Square,” the magazine assembled a roster of 16 photographers, each of whom could bring a very different eye and sensibility to the story. At that time, the Times Square neighborhood was on the edge of a complete transformation from its seedy past, and the editors wanted to capture a sense of the

storied place. The resulting photo shoot produced an astonishing variety of images: city streets, buildings, portraits, and genre scenes. Swedish photographer Lars Tunbjork’s photo of the buildings at the corner of 8th Avenue and 42nd Street is timeless.

“Forty-Second Street at the time was a strange place,” writes Tunbjork, “with all the abandoned cinemas and porno palaces—like a big empty theater set. I took this picture on a sunny Sunday. I love sunny Sundays in New York; the air is clean, and the light is so crisp and hard. I thought of the paintings of Piet Mondrian when I saw these buildings and the strong colors.”

In addition to giving considerable creative control to its photographers, the New York Times Magazine also likes to do “cross-over” assignments, asking photographers known for their deft handling of one subject to photograph something different. An

example is shown in the assignment given to Roger Ballen. Known for his dramatic and disturbing surreal images, Kathy Ryan chose him as a photographer for a fashion shoot. Ballen worked with actress Selma Blair to produce “The Selma Blair Witch Project: Fall’s Dark Silhouette has a Way of Creeping Up on You.” The photograph “Resemblance,” at once creepy and funny, has Blair, dressed in designer clothing, inhabiting an image both enigmatic and psychologically charged. Not surprisingly, Ballen has noted, “I won an award for that fashion shoot but no one has asked me to do another one.”

In yet another example of the magazine’s creative thinking, assignments sometimes go to artists who are not photographers. Artist Chuck Close’s photos appear in “Assignment: Times Square” and Jeff Koons, a sculptor, worked with actress Gretchen Mol to recreate Bettie Page images from the

1940s and ’50s, in which sexual fetish imagery is presented in vivid color and filtered through Koons’s tonguein-cheek humor. “When you’re looking at a Jeff Koons photograph,” says Makrandi, “you’re not necessarily looking for him to be a technically excellent photographer. The interest is in how he translates the vision he is known for into the medium of photography. Is his puckish sensibility and his sense of humor present in his images?”

Paolo Pelegrin’s work would hardly be called puckish. The exhibition contains three of the photo essays Pelegrin has done for the magazine over the last 15 years. We see his photography move from film to digital, but always his work has what Kathy Ryan has called “a poetic sensibility.”

Palestinian territory. His 2004 photos in “How Did Darfur Happen?” explored a humanitarian crisis. “The Exodus” from 2009, documents the flight of Libyans across the border into Tunisia and displays his ability to deal with large events in terms that are both immediate and empathetic.

— New York Times Magazine Photo Editor Kathy Ryan The brilliant young photographer Ryan McGinley had previously worked with subjects such as skateboarders, musicians and graffiti artists. His assignment to photograph Olympians was a challenge to transcend the banal. His talent, combined with the resources provided by Kathy Ryan, created images of lasting beauty. The magazine contracted with the design team of Rodarte to provide special outfits

for the athletes. McGinley came up with unique camera angles and compositions. Thousands of photographs were taken, and a visual story evolved that goes far beyond appearances to reveal the very essence of what these uniquely trained people are. In his incredible photo of freestyle skier Emily Cook, McGinley captures a moment in the performance of a sport that routinely sends skiers soaring into the sky, and Cook is shot against the sky, soaring into the sky, becoming the sky. She defies physical laws, hovering as an ethereal being above the common world below. It is a visual manifestation of how she feels at that very moment.

This exhibition is a powerful viewing experience, rewarding the visitor with world-class photographs, many in large format, but also with a rare glimpse into the process of photojournalism. It is not to be missed.

Humorist Garrison Keillor puts it this way: “Thank you, God, for this good life, and forgive us if we do not love it enough.” Perhaps a gratitude meditation of your own can help prepare you for whatever challenges your holidays may offer. Get to a quiet place, breathe...and remind yourself that no matter what, you’ll be OK. Take care of yourself while you take care of others. In past Shrink Rap columns you’ve read about the problems that occur when you lose yourself in the busy-ness of the season, or when you put everyone else’s needs first without honoring your own needs and wants, or when you simply can’t say “No.” Diminishing your own importance, ignoring healthy boundaries, a lack of good self-care—these are the best ways I know of to plant seeds of resentment. If you get your holiday cookies through suffering or guilt or playing the martyr, it’s time to look at that. Because the holidays are when all these buttons are absolutely going to get pushed. So you might as well

start your process of paying attention now. Believe me, everyone will be happier.

Go hug a tree. You can take this as literally as you’d like. What I mean by this is, take a break. Observe your own pace, and when you start to race too fast—talk too fast, eat too fast, think too fast, drive too fast—slow down.

You know the feeling I’m talking about. So use it as a red flag to remind you to take a breath. Push the pause button. And maybe spend the afternoon over a long lunch with a good friend. Or call an elderly relative and really listen to them, with nothing else on your mind. Sit on the back porch with a cup of tea or a glass of mulled wine and breathe in the energy of the universe. Get out of yourself, and think of a creative act of kindness to do for a stranger.

Play with the dogs. Go for a walk. Hug a tree.

I hope these suggestions help make your holidays the best ever. My gift to you is a wish for great joy, good health, and a forgiving spirit.

n August of this year I wrote a piece on the band Bad Scout. It was an expository feature detailing the inception of the band, their sound and influences, significant gigs and who in the band was most likely to sit up late at night, naked, eating cheese. There were also some brief allusions to an upcoming album.

Having already covered the minutiae of the band, there is no need to rehash it here. Instead. we’re going to dive headfirst in to the aforementioned album, now complete and nearly ready for human consumption.

One of the boldest and marc t. most influential writers of a generation once described Bad Scout as “languid and laidback,” going so far as to place them in the Lebowski universe. The acuity of that handsome young writer cannot be underestimated: Bad Scout IS about as languid and laidback as you can get, and they have proven it eight times over in this beautiful piece of work.

The opening track is “Trust Rust,”

a sweetly minimalist piece comprised mostly of piano, hi-hat and snare, with plenty of open space to be explored by picked guitar chords and a mournful pedal steel. I will add that I first heard this tune on a cold, wet autumn aftermichael noon and for optimal enjoyment I recommend you do the same.

“Girl on the River” makes for a bright, joyful second track, reminiscent (as several tracks are) of The Band or the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

A happy and affectionate anthem, it straddles the line between rock and country, so let’s call it rock, but “down home, back on the farm” rock. One could almost believe that the band

rehearsed in a barn. Perhaps if they shot a music video, it could be set in a barn. There needs to be a barn somewhere, is what I’m saying.

“Mama’s Cancer” is a tragic tune, heartbreaking, and yet it manages to avoid being predictably maudlin. The fellows tackle a delicate and painful subject deftly, with lyrics that are honest and full of common sense. This is going to be the song that speaks deeply to a lot of people, I think.

If there is one tune on the album that does venture further in to the realm of country than the rest, it would have to be “Sweet Repose.” Still, it isn’t really country music. In truth, we bat around the term “country/western” as though the two words are synonymous, but this dreamy little lullaby of a tune is far more western than country.

Next up on the playlist is “Ardmore,” a song full of bright, crunchy guitar that needs to be heard on a tinny radio in an old pickup truck flying down the road (on the way to the barn). “Dyersburg, TN” takes it back down a notch, and for an album I keep trying to describe as “not country,” this tune sure has some country mojo at its heart, replete with plaintive fiddles and more pedal steel. The album swiftly shifts gears again with “Take

Me Down,” another toe-tapping guitar tune.

The final tune is “Fired.” If it isn’t a tribute to T. Van Zandt, it certainly should be. Yes, I reference Van Zandt frequently in this column but hey, he’s just one of the greatest and most respected singer/songwriters of the 20th century so that’s going to happen, and these fellows have captured (whether they meant to or not) something of the spirit of the great Texas poet.

Beginning to end the album is well written, well produced and cohesive, covering a fair amount of territory, and when all is said and done, it’s just gorgeous. I still maintain that Bad Scout isn’t a country band, but rather a rock band with country in its soul.

The songs are all honest little slices of “working man” life with a decidedly Southern flavor. It is rare indeed to hear a debut album with such maturity and depth.

This will be a worthy addition to the collection of any serious music lover. The band is currently engaged in a Kickstarter program to get completion funds for the album (the tracks are recorded and mixed but the final master is yet to be done) and I’ve already kicked in my $10. I highly recommend you do the same. It will be money well spent. Also, barns.

ercussionist Nick Hennies’ latest album Work manages to be intriguing and enthralling in an unusual manner—its studied, persistent and soft vibraphone chords seek to pull the listener in closer using gentle persuasion, rather than force or flash. Once the bed has been prepared and the listener’s trust has been earned, then Hennies unleashes some surprises, prodding the proceedings into more chaotic territory.

The ten-minute “Settle,” the first of only two tracks, has a meditative mood, with Hennies playing simple metronomic vibraphone tones on the understated multi-track recording. Eventually, occasional flutters of notes adorn the track, and its minimalist approach—which allows it to comfortably sit alongside works by the likes of Steve Reich or Charlemagne Palestine—can clear the listener’s head in preparation.

Gold-Bears Dalliance (Slumberland) ning of the 40-minute track “Expenditures,” with barely audible vibraphone notes, initially acting like some distant, lost satellite, beeping loyally as designed. After building and fading, gradually, Hennies is joined by the rest of his ensemble, including two contrabasses, a violin, a clarinet, a trombone and Chris Cogburn on percussion and sine waves; however, it’s not always clear what is being heard, since the clean tones of the vibraphone could be mistaken for pure sine waves.

Around the 15-minute mark, a flicker of clarinet appears, being the first sound that has a human quality to it. Soft, wispy violin strings enter the track, before long, deep contrabass notes finally fill the bass-range void. The sustained notes give way to more aggressive contrabass bowing, even reaching a grinding intensity, matched by the freer violin notes.

The vibraphone hits move away from one-note monotony toward

forming longer patterns, and low drums enter the picture before the whole piece disperses. It’s perhaps like the rebellious cousin of Terry Riley’s In C, and it offers ample rewards for those who are patient, at first providing a space for a clear mind before filling it up with a provocative jumble.

T

he second album from the Atlanta power-pop band Gold-Bears, Dalliance, is like an elastic band stretched between the past and the present, dynamically snapping back together with kinetic energy and putting that force to good use.

You see, front man Jeremy Underwood can’t quite escape the past—the opening song on Dalliance is “Yeah, Tonight,” previously heard in a largely different version (which used another set of lyrics and a sparse, atmospheric mood before a cathartic conclusion) as the final track on the excellent debut Gold-Bears album Are You

Falling in Love? “Yeah, Tonight” was also a tight 80-second burst of goodness from Underwood’s previous band Plastic Mastery back in 2002.

The new version is no slouch, too, being an insistent rush of strummy momentum and lyrical outpouring, featuring girl/boy vocals with Emma Cooper (of Standard Fare) and a variety pack of drum patterns to keep listeners on their toes.

While the first Gold-Bears album has Underwood getting through a bad marriage, Dalliance channels his post-divorce anger, pushing forward with an infinite supply of fuel like kindred spirits such as Superchunk, The Thermals and The Wedding Present (whose epic build/release track “Dalliance” is the most probable source of the album title).

The album is another new start for Underwood, using a completely different lineup than the one on the debut album; welcome guests include vocalist Pam Berry (of the legendary, noise-pop band Black Tambourine) on “From Tallahassee to Gainesville,” with a fuzzedout bliss (or blissed-out fuzz) and small details (sleigh bells, a temporary “Be My Baby” beat) to remind the listener that this is indeed a pop song.

But, what sets Dalliance apart from your typical indie-pop-rock album is its lack of complacency.

Take “Death With Drums,” which doesn’t end where a typical pop song should end and keeps going with more and more hooks, ramping up the intensity, and like the rest of the album, it drags the past behind it but doesn’t let that slow it down, charging ahead with one of the most glorious half-hour blasts of sparkling indie-pop of the year.

A Wiki Grows in Chattanooga Open Chattanooga wants contributors to a crowdsourced hub

You can do it at home. You can do it on your lunch break. You can spend as much or as little time as you want. When I first started with LocalWiki, I got kind of addicted to it. I would look up and it had been three hours since I started editing and I’d added 10 pages.”

Rich Bailey is a professional writer, editor and (sometimes) PR consultant. He led a project to create Chattanooga’s first civic web site in 1995 before even owning a modem. Now he covers Chattanooga technology for The Pulse and blogs about it at CircleChattanooga.com. He splits his time between Chattanooga and Brooklyn.

If you’ve ever used Wikipedia, the web-based, usercreated encyclopedia, you know something about Chattanooga’s LocalWiki, but there are some important differences.

Both are created and edited by whoever wants to conRICH tribute, not a centralized manager. And both use the same open source software that allows user participation and tracks all changes.

Wikipedia aspires to be a compendium of (literally) all human knowledge, and maintains a bit of distance from its topics. Entries are intended to be objective, every fact should be supported by a published reference, and personal testimony (even by experts) and information sourced to a personal interview (like a reporter would do) are strictly forbidden.

Chattanooga’s LocalWiki, by contrast, is less restrictive and more responsive to whatever users see as useful. Material that runs the gamut from more formal information—like sections on Chattanooga neighborhood, startup community resources and entertainment—to informal items like a rundown of the best happy hours in Chattanooga.

The nature and depth of the content is up to its

users. Open Chattanooga manages LocalWiki, mostly facilitating creative sessions and enforcing basic community standards—no abusive language, no derogatory remarks about individuals or organizations—but LocalWiki is entirely user created.

BAILEY “ R e a l l y, anything can be on it,” says Jenny Park, one of Open Chattanooga’s leaders. “The way I think of it is, what is something I know from my time in Chattanooga that I want other people to know, whether they live here or they’re looking at living here or they’re new to town—information that’s useful and interesting and records some sort of special pieces of Chattanooga.”

Open Chattanooga grew out of a data-driven effort to help respond to the tornadoes of 2010. (For more on Open Chattanooga, see “Let the Sun Shine on City Data,” in The Pulse, March 27, 2014). Its current configuration is funded by a grant from the national Knight Foundation, with matching funds from the Benwood Foundation, to further the collaboration between city government, the Public Library and Open Chattanooga, working on what Park calls “this multi-pronged effort to start thinking bet-

ter about how we access and utilize public data.”

If working with data sounds like something only a geek could love, consider how Marcus Ellsworth, Open Chattanooga’s new community organizer, describes the organization: “Rather than doing gatekeeping, it’s about gate opening. Open Chattanooga is about opening data and technology and resources to everyone. Rather than being about saying things like ‘you can’t do that’ or ‘you shouldn’t do that,’ it’s more of ‘OK, if that’s the way you want to solve a problem, how can we make that happen? If we can’t do it now, how do we build solutions so we can reach the point that we can address the things you’re concerned about?’”

No technical background is needed to create or edit wiki pages. Anyone can open an account, and anyone with an account can contribute to the site from any Internet-connected computer.

“I think it’s really cool that we have a place for anybody regardless of their technical ability and regardless of their income to

record and document their understanding of the city they live in,” says Park.

“You can do it at home.

Open Chattanooga holds monthly work sessions to introduce people to the LocalWiki and other projects.

Park recalls a conversation at the most recent monthly Open Chattanooga meeting: “A guy said, ‘I’m not a tech person, but I know a lot about Chattanooga history, and I would love to tell stories.’ Not just listing the facts, actual stories of people that he interacted with who told him things they remembered from being in Chattanooga. So we talked about creating a story section like NPR does with Story Corps.”

The next Open Chattanooga meetings are: • Dec. 10—Local Wiki Happy Hour, 5-7 p.m. at The Flying Squirrel where people can socialize and work on pages, with an adult beverage if they choose.

• Dec. 17—Open Chattanooga monthly work session at 5:30-8 p.m. on the Public Library’s Fourth Floor— sorry, no booze. Work on the Wiki or a project to adapt an open source software platform to work with Chattanooga’s open government data.

You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out, Kid Ralphie and crew are back at the Theatre Centre “A Christmas Story: The Musical!” is back by popular demand at the Chattanooga Theatre Centre this holiday season. This musical retelling of the classic Christmas film includes all of the best moments from the original story, from the leg lamp to the bunny suit to the Santa slide.

Though this musical is based on the well-loved movie “A Christmas Story,” the movie itself drew inspiration from the stories of Jean Shepherd. Those who have seen the film may remember Shepherd as the narrating voice of Ralph Parker.

Others may know him as a radio personality who started out in the ’50s. Shepherd’s radio work often included stories from his youth, and the character of Ralphie is semi-autobiographical.

With music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book by Joseph Robinette, this musical is sure to delight the whole family. The production is directed by Scott Dunlap and features a talented ensemble cast of children and adults.

Every December, while many cities are hanging their stockings by the chimney with care, roasting chestnuts by that open fire (hopefully with a newly inspected extinguisher nearby), and singing carols in the snow, Chattanooga’s Southside is gearing up for its most exciting holiday event of the year—the annual Mainx24 celebration. Chattanooga’s biggest and only 24-hour block party returns for the eighth year on Saturday, Dec. 6, along and around Main Street.

Founded by CreateHere in 2006, Mainx24 seeks to showcase what a 24hour city Chattanooga could be and to bring Southside neighbors together with a celebration of the area’s residents, stores and businesses. Each year, individuals, neighbors and local businesses work tirelessly to put on events small and large, from music and art events to storytelling, athletic events, contests and loads of delicious treats all along the way. What started eight years ago as a small community festival with around 20 events on the schedule has now grown into a huge extravaganza of more than 100 events, with offerings attracting families and friends from all over the city.

All the tried-and-true favorites are back this year, kicking off with the Pancake Breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at the Main Street Fire Hall, featuring pancakes, Greyfriar’s coffee, live music and horseand-carriage rides. Afterward, the family favorite EPB Southside Parade, Mutt Strut and Stroller Strut will roll along, offering loads of excitement and fun for young and old alike.

Wheel Championship, benefiting the Children’s Advocacy Center of Hamilton County. Many of this year’s events are free and many over the years have benefited local nonprofit organizations, making the event not only fun, but offering support to many of the organizations that help this city thrive.

Organizer Fernando Martinez, along with co-chairs Amanda Carmichael, Monica and Adam Kinsey, Cat Collier Martinez, Katie Smith and Ken Hays have added emphasis to family and children’s activities this year, including a Main Street Mural project, storytelling time with Mrs. Claus and the Kid’s Main Event, coordinated by Chattanooga Presents, that includes a concert, balloon animals, juggling, bubble machines and more. In addition to all this, many of these family-friendly events include hot cocoa and other treats. “So many more fun and creative activities are in store for families and kids of all ages throughout the day, so everyone in the community is encouraged to come out and join,” said Martinez.

Many new businesses to the Southside, such as The Local Juicery and Grocery Bar, will be hosting events, as well as Main Street staples like Blue Orleans, which will be holding a number of events throughout the day, including Beignets and Coffee, and Mardi Gras on Main St. featuring beer specials and a DJ spinning well into the night. Local restaurants like Clyde’s on Main, Terminal Brewhouse and Taquiera Jalisco will offer

food and drink specials throughout the day and night, and Alleia, The Flying Squirrel and Zarzours, typically offering dinner-only service, will open early for lunch as well.

As always, there is plenty of great music to be found, and Carmichael says, “It’s turned into a mini-music festival with plenty of opportunity to hear lots of music throughout the day and long into the night.” From DJs spinning at events like the Double Dragon Dance Party at the Crash Pad or the Silent Disco at Mean Mug Coffeehouse, to live music at events like the Chili Championship, Clyde’s on Main and Track 29, there will be more than enough music to satisfy the tastes of all who attend.

“It is the most unique and eccentric event in the city,” Carmichael says.

“It’s just really cool to be able to explore the Southside and all it has to offer. Stretching Out the Hunger Starves Ideas “Mockingjay Part 1” is well-acted but thin

t’s important to consider audience when viewing a film. “The Hunger Games” franchise is based on a highly popular series of young adult novels and the films closely follow the source material in the development of its themes. Anyone who has seen the previous two films are aware of disturbing and violent political machinations of the society of Panem.

The film feels incomplete because it is. It should have been one movie with a definite conclusion rather than two.”

Child sacrifice, violent dismantling of uprisings, and genocidal actions are heavily on display in each installation of the franchise—the Empire and Darth Vader have nothing on the evils that seem to corrupt the Capitol. In other reviews, the political subtext of “The Hunger Games” has been called sharp and poignant. But let’s remember that the series is meant for preteens and teens between the ages of 12-16.

Many of these ideas are explicit and overt, barely qualifying as subtext. There is no depth in their examination. Nor should there be: “The Hunger Games” is an introduction to very real, very demonstrable forces at work in the world for young people learning about these topics. Panem is almost a fictional version of North Korea.

At the same time, the on-the-nose oppression in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” is rare. Modern injustice is much more subtle, and far more sinister.

As with all sequels, the film picks up an undetermined amount of time after the end of the previous one. one gray-haired politician for another.

She is now in the company of President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), who is working closely with former Gamemaster Plutarch Heavensbee (the late, sorely missed Philip Seymour Hoffman) to turn Capitol-style propaganda against the enemy. Coin lacks the charm of Snow, but matches his resolve and controls her own people with an iron fist of jumpsuits and temperance.

Clearly, the film is indicating that individuals are simply tools used for a cause and true freedom is in short supply on either side of the war. Much of the film is exposition and explanation—the little action found in it is at the midpoint and the rest is filled with various looks of horror and disbelief from Katniss herself. Despite her skill with a bow, Katniss is not much of a soldier and her open defiance at the Capitol seems futile when locked underground and separated from Peeta, who remains a captive of President Snow.

The film is well acted, as it is stacked with an exceptional amount of talent. However, the decision to split the final book into two parts smacks of cynical capitalism and continues a frustrating trend of Hollywood to draw out stories that should have ended long before they do.

The film feels incomplete because it is. It should have been one movie

with a definite conclusion rather than two. The themes are developed effectively, but they are very much found on the surface. Many films, even popular adult films, seem thin when held up to the light. “Fight Club” is no more nuanced at a second glance than “The Hunger Games.” This may just be a challenge of adaptation. Important ideas will always be lost in translation from page to screen.

I found myself wondering at the brutality in the film and the value of teaching that the only response to injustice is a violent uprising. We don’t know what other measures have been tried in Panem, of course. However, I might encourage parents to discuss with their children the danger of such action or even take their children to see “Selma” later this year to show them another, more effective way to effect meaningful change.

Using “The Hunger Games” as a stepping stone for understanding seems more valuable to me than using it as entertainment. The teacher in me finds value in adapting a popular book into a more accessible medium—literary technique can and should be taught through film. By that measure, “The Hunger Games” series is satisfying.

But the critic in me doesn’t need to watch the films more than once and probably would catch the final installment on TV.

The time of year that can bring a whole lot of smiles, happiness, togetherness and warmth…or a whole lot of stress, short tempers and overspending.

One of the main sources of stress that I see at this time of year is the pressure to get a lot done and to take care of a lot of other people, from the needs of elderly family members to attending the kids’ school plays and concerts, often at the expense of down time, self-care time, peaceful time sitting by the hearth. Doesn’t a warm cup of holiday cheer sound good right about now?

To Do: It’s all up to you—or at least more so than you think. This year, set some limits that make you feel good. Take some breaths. Take the dog for a walk. Take a long hot bath. When it’s scared, it escapes at a rate approaching two inches per hour.

If you get flustered in the coming week, Capricorn, I suggest you flee at a speed no faster than the limpet’s. I’m making a little joke here.

The truth is, if you do get into a situation that provokes anxiety, I don’t think you should leave the scene at all. Why? There are two possibilities. First, you may be under the influence of mistaken ideas or habitual responses that are causing you to be nervous about something there’s no need to be nervous about. Or second, if you are indeed in an authentic bind, you really do need to deal with it, not run away.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Science-fiction novelist Philip K. Dick has been one of my favorite authors since I discovered his work years ago. I love how he reconfigured my mind with his metaphysical riffs about politics and his prophetic questions about what’s real and what’s not. Recently I discovered he once lived in a house that’s a few blocks from where I now live. While he was there, he wrote two of his best books. I went to the place and found it was unoccupied.

That night I slept in a sleeping bag on the back porch, hoping to soak up inspiration. It worked!

Afterwards, I had amazing creative breakthroughs for days. I recommend a comparable ritual for you, Aquarius. Go in quest of greatness that you want to rub off on you.

The vast majority of them, however, are reruns of impressions that have passed through our minds many times before. But I am pleased to report that in the coming weeks, you Aries folks are primed to be far less repetitive than normal. You have the potential to churn out a profusion of original ideas, fresh perceptions, novel fantasies, and pertinent questions. Take full advantage of this opportunity. Brainstorm like a genius.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): I enjoy getting spam emails with outrageous declarations that are at odds with common sense. “Eating salads makes you sick” is one of my favorites, along with “Water is worse for you than vodka” and “Smoking is healthier than exercising.” Why do I love reading these laughable claims? Well, they remind me that every day I am barraged by nonsense and delusion from the news media, the Internet, politicians, celebrities, and a host of fanatics.

“Smoking is healthier than exercising” is just a more extreme and obvious lie than many others that are better disguised. The moral of the story for you in the coming week: Be alert for exaggerations that clue you in to what’s going on discreetly below the surface. Watch carefully for glitches in the Matrix.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Every one of us, including me, has blind spots about the arts of intimacy and collaboration. Every one of us suffers from unconscious habits that interfere with our ability to get and give the love we want. What are your bind spots and unconscious habits, Gemini. Ha! Trick question! They wouldn’t be blind spots and unconscious habits if you already knew about them. That’s the bad news. The good news is that in the next six weeks you can catch glimpses of these blocks, and make a good start toward reducing their power to distort your relationships.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Now and then, it is in fact possible to fix malfunctioning machines by giving them a few swift kicks or authoritative whacks. This strategy is called “percussive maintenance.”

In the coming days, you might be inclined to use it a lot. That’s probably OK. I suspect it’ll work even better than it usually does.

There will be problems, though, if you adopt a similar approach as you try to correct glitches that are more psychological, interpersonal, and spiritual in nature. For those, I recommend sensitivity and finesse.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In 1662, Dutch painter Rembrandt finished “The Oath of Claudius Civilis”. It was 18 feet by 18 feet, the largest painting he ever made.

For a short time, it hung on a wall in Amsterdam’s Town Hall. But local burgomasters soon decided it was offensive, and returned it to the artist to be reworked. Rembrandt ultimately chopped off three-fourths of the original. What’s left is now hanging in a Stockholm museum, and the rest has been lost. Art critic Svetlana Alpers wishes the entire painting still existed, but nevertheless raves about the remaining portion, calling it “a magnificent fragment.” I urge you to think like Alpers. It’s time to celebrate your own magnificent fragments.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): You now have a special talent for connecting things that have never been connected. You also have a magic touch at uniting things that should be united but can’t manage to do so under their own power. In fact, I’m inclined to believe that in the next three weeks you will be unusually lucky and adept at forging links, brokering truces, building bridges, and getting opposites to attract. I won’t be surprised if you’re able to compare apples and oranges in ways that make good sense and calm everyone down.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In 1989, Amy Tan birthed her first novel, “The Joy Luck Club”. Her next, “The Kitchen God’s Wife”, came out in 1991. Both were bestsellers. Within a few years, the student study guide publisher CliffsNotes did with them what it has done with many masterpieces of world literature: produced condensed summaries for use by students too lazy to read all of the originals. “In spite of my initial shock,” Tan said, “I admit that I am perversely honored to be in CliffsNotes.” It was a sign of success to get the same treatment as superstar authors like Shakespeare and James Joyce. The CliffsNotes approach is currently an operative metaphor in your life, Scorpio.

Try to find it in your heart to be honored, even if it’s perversely so.

He sat in the center of the back seat, his front legs locked, yet still nimble enough to deal with the Gforces as I occasionally slowed or turned more quickly than inertia allows a 60-pound quadruped sitting on cushioned ALEX vinyl to deal with.

“Easy, Justice,” I said as we turned left through a green light.

“What was that?” my partner said over the phone.

(We were on speaker, relax.)

“What are you talking about?”

“Not what,” I replied.

“Who. Justice the Dog, of course.”

“You have a dog? What, in your car?”

Why was he making it sound so weird? “Well, duh,” I said. “He couldn’t stay on the interstate.” And for once, this was pleasantly true. Traffic was swerving and locking up their brakes up ahead of me near the three-mile marker of I-75 and I went towards the cause, only to discover a medium-sized brown lump huddled up against the inside

wall, occasionally trying to dart back across the interstate to get to the other side. He was shivering with fear.

I used the traffic already stopped behind me (because fast-lane traffic on an Interstate is the last place on Earth I TEACH want to be unless the other alternatives involve spiders), shut my front door and opened the rear. After a quick series of “G’boy, g’boy!’s” and kissy-sounds, he got the picture and bolted into the back of my car. I shut the door quickly and raised my arms in a “V” for victory as those stopped in view of me could see what was being done and began to honk and clap.

“We’re going to have such Adventures!” I said to my new friend. He squinted his brown eyes and began to rapidly thump his tale, and I immediately smelled urine. (Dog urine, for a change.) “Great,” I muttered. Catching myself, I quickly spun it on a positive note: “It’s perfectly natural!

now myself!” It’s all about self-esteem, you see. It wasn’t long afterwards that my partner called and I threw him on speakerphone.

“Are you going to McKamey then?” he asked.

“Why the hell would I do that?” I replied. “This is a CRACK dog, I’m sure of it.

RIGHT, BOY?!” I said excitedly as I looked into my rearview mirror. He squinted again, and I heard a fart.

“OK, so he’s a little excitable,” I said, wincing at the other distinct dog smell usually reserved for late-night games of “poo foot” among co-workers who have unknowingly stepped on a dogmine, “but he is mine. And we are going to have adventures together.” My partner audibly sighed.

“And you’re calling him ‘Justice’?” he asked.

“Of course. All great sidekicks get a name.”

At this, we concluded the conversation and a call came in from dispatch. “We’re on, boy!” I said, but with much less enthusiasm this time in fear for both my upholstery and olfactory glands.

I worked Brainerd so, naturally, I received “the other kind of call” there (as opposed to wrecks): a shoplifter.

Maybe they had “the weed” or crack on them? Justice would be so excited! (And he was. He now just squinted automatically when we made eye contact in the mirror, and without pee or poo sounds.)

I arrived and found two customers waiting, already in irons thanks to the astute lossprevention staff at Dillard’s Hamilton Place, and I prayed they lacked identification or had been previously banned so I could transport them since this world was still too prejudiced to allow my dog to accompany me inside…and lo and behold? My wish came true. We were going downtown—but not before I ran my dog around them.

I got them all the way to the car and was beginning to wonder how I was actually going to get the dog into the front seat when I noticed something in the back seat.

Apparently, that wasn’t just a fart earlier. (Now it was my turn to audibly sigh.)

“What’s that smell?” Customer #1 asked.

I looked him in the eye and replied, “That smell? That’s the smell…of Justice.”

(I stopped at McKamey on the way back from the jail. He was a crappy partner after all, it seemed.)
