[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season. Our programming for each concert highlights music from specific countries and regions, affording us the opportunity to take a musical trip around the world. We’ll enjoy picturesque music from America, passionate music from Russia, a delightful program of intimate repertoire from France, a colorful and fiery program of music from Spain and great masterworks from Germany and Austria. Our annual POPS Concert features favorite selections from Hollywood’s Golden Age as well as recent blockbusters.

Our roster of guest artists includes audience favorites such as pianist Terrence Wilson and acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira along with artists making their BSO debut including cellist Cicely Parnas and international guitar sensation Pablo Villegas. Across the season, we’ll hear beloved favorites from history’s greatest composers: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Bizet, Ravel, Debussy and many more. And because there’s more to the BSO than Bach and Beethoven, we’re excited to share a VERY special event we’ve added to our season at the beginning of June as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of perhaps the greatest album ever – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in a special collaboration with Classic Albums Live and the King Center!

Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event that draws thousands of audience members of all ages. And my favorite event of the year, our Annual Fifth Grade Concerts, introduces the thrill of live symphonic music to every fifth grader in Brevard County!

For me, a symphonic piece is a personal journey into the life and emotions of the composer. With each note, my mind’s eye paints a picture – my vision of what the composer wanted us to “see” and hear.

Our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, has again shown inspiration in the programming for our 2016-17 concert series. And, I continue to be amazed at the talent of our musicians. When they step on that stage, you are witness to their hard work and dedication.

[ FEATURED ARTIST ] ELMAR OLIVEIRA Elmar Oliveira is an American violinist whose remarkable combination of impeccable artistry and old- world elegance sets him apart as one of our most celebrated living artists. Oliveira remains the first and only American violinist to win the Gold Medal at Moscow’s prestigious Tchaikovsky International Competition.

He was the first violinist to receive the coveted Avery Fisher Prize and won First Prize at the Naumburg International Competition.

Son of Portuguese immigrants, Oliveira was nine when he began studying the violin with his brother, John Oliveira and then attended the Hartt College of Music and the Manhattan School of Music. He holds honorary doctorates from both the Manhattan School of Music and Binghamton University. In 1997, the Prime Minister of Portugal awarded Elmar the country’s highest civilian accolade, The Order of Santiago.

Oliveira has performed regularly at the most prestigious international concert venues. He has played with orchestras including the Boston Symphony, Buffalo Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, Detroit Symphony, Helsinki Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus, London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia IV

Oliveira is passionate about expanding the role and repertoire of the violin as well as championing contemporary music and unjustly neglected works. He is a devoted teacher and promoter of young artists, and also keenly supports the art of contemporary violin and bow making. He is a Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Lynn University Conservatory of Music in Boca Raton, Florida.

Oliveira’s repertoire is hugely diverse.

Admired for his performances of the established violin literature, he is also a much sought-after interpreter of music of our time. He has premiered works by contemporary composers including Morton Gould, Aaron Jay Kernis, Ezra Laderman, Benjamin Lees, Andrzej Panufnik, Krysztof Penderecki, Charles Wuorinen and Joan Tower, who dedicated her Violin Concerto to him.

He has also performed rarely heard works by composers including Ginastera, Joachim and Rautavaara.

Stokowski Aria (Air from Orchestral Suite No 3) “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul.” ~ Johann Sebastian Bach German organist and composer Johann Sebastian Bach was unsurpassed as a master of counterpoint and other stylistic principles of the Baroque era. He gave to all his works a profundity and maturity, a depth of expression, and a grand design unequaled by his predecessors and contemporaries. The towering figure of the period, he summed up the musical knowledge and techniques that preceded him and developed them further.

To those who have ascended into the mystery of Bach’s heaven, his music is rightfully taken as absolute, beyond adequate praise, and eclipsing all that came before and went after with the beauty of its perfection, order, and balance between architecture and introversion. His music is a complex yet effortless rationalism, equally accessible to the uninitiated and to the more sophisticated listener. Whether a fugue, a passacaglia, or any other tricky form, this master’s music hits the ears of the lay listener and the trained listener with the same result: joy and wonder! Bach’s music is at once science and poetry, a universal epiphany that touches and transforms us all.

In the Orchestral Suite No. 3, Bach wrote for an ensemble consisting of the usual strings and continuo (bass and harpsichord) and two oboes, and included three trumpets and timpani, suggesting that he probably intended it for some festive or ceremonial occasion. Although no one is certain when or where the Suite was composed, it may date from the composer’s Leipzig years (1723-50).

In addition to the opening majestic Ouverture – the beginning described by Goethe as “so pompous and dignified” – the Suite No. 3 ensues with three brilliant and vibrant French dances, including a gavotte, bourrée, and concluding gigue. The second movement is not a dance but rather a strategically placed simple and tenderly beautiful “air,” French for “song” and connected to “aria.” It is commonly known as “Air for the G String,” made famous by a transcription of that name for violin and piano by the German violinist August Wilhelmj. The Air for the G String is as well known and beloved the world over as almost any other great Bach melody. This exquisite and hauntingly beautiful gem will probably float through your brain (and soul) all the way home! This evening’s performance features the lush and highly romanticized setting for string orchestra by the magnificent Leopold Stokowski.

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 61 Allegro ma non troppo Larghetto Rondo The crossing of paths of Beethoven and a young virtuoso violinist named Franz Clement led to the creation of what is considered by many to be the bench-mark and cornerstone concerto of the violin repertory. The inspiration began in 1794, when the composer attended a concert given by the Austrian prodigy. From the age of nine, Clement performed throughout Europe as a Wunderkind. Beethoven caught the young phenom at the age of fourteen and was so moved to write: “Dear Clement! Go forth along the path, which you hitherto have traveled so beautifully, so magnificently. Nature and art vie with each other in making you a great artist. Follow both and, never fear, you will reach the great – the greatest – goal possible to an artist here on earth. All wishes for your happiness, dear youth; and return soon, that I may again hear your dear, magnificent playing. Entirely your friend, L. v. Beethoven.”

Franz Clement did indeed ‘return soon’, as conductor and concertmaster of the Theateran-der-Wien in Vienna in 1802. He worked closely with Beethoven in the production of Fidelio and as the conductor of the premiere of the Symphony No. 3, Eroica. The Violin SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Concerto in D Major was written for Clement, who gave the work its first performance at the Theater in late December 1806. The writing for violin in the concerto is heavenly and sublime and can be directly traced to the uniquely beautiful sound Clement produced.

A respected musical periodical of the day characterized his performances as having “an indescribable delicacy, neatness, and elegance, an extremely delightful tenderness and purity; these are the qualities that indisputably place Clement among the most perfect violinists.” His reputed perfect intonation and dazzlingly dexterous bowing must have been irresistible to Beethoven. There can be no doubt that the character of the Violin Concerto is owed to Clement, whose artistic personality is manifest throughout the work, including a clownish side (in the Rondo), as is evidenced by Beethoven’s punning plea for clemency when he wrote on the score, “Concerto par Clemenza pour Clement.”

The Violin Concerto was written during one of the most productive periods of Beethoven’s life: the impressive context includes the Fourth and Fifth Symphonies, the Fourth Piano Concerto, the Coriolan Overture, the three Op. 59 Quartets, and numerous other works from around the months of its composition in 1806. Beethoven was so involved with other projects that he wasn’t able to finish the work until just days before the premiere.

As a result, the soloist Franz Clement was forced to virtually sight-read the solo part; reviews indicate that he did so with little apparent difficulty. But with no real rehearsal time, the performance received mixed reviews: The critics were more enamored at the time with flamboyant virtuosity and not so much with music of such introspection and leisure. In the ensuing three or four decades, the Violin Concerto received some good performances in the hands of Pierre Baillot, Jacob Dont, and Henri Vieuxtemps; but it never really caught on in a big way. Until – the violinist, Joseph Joachim, scored a triumph with it in London in 1844 in a concert conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Joachim carried it around in his repertoire throughout his career and became identified with it. In large part, it was through Joachim’s persistent championing that the work became established as an indispensable classic.

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is now recognized as the first outstanding violin concerto of symphonic proportions. What distinguishes it from previous works in the genre is the integration of the solo part within the orchestral fabric, the coming together of the violin and orchestra into something far exceeding the conventional 18th-century solo vs. tutti confrontation. Here, the violin becomes the very essence of the concerto and is given the room it needs to sing. Some of the concerto’s most haunting moments are in the quietest passages where Beethoven speaks not with the bluster of the thunderer, but rather with the gentle voice of the Romantic poet. Although the Concerto ends with a festive and triumphant rondo, the first two movements – the Allegro ma non troppo and Larghetto – devote long stretches to a soaring lyricism and a sublime expansiveness.

As Sir Donald Tovey noted, “Beethoven’s Violin Concerto is gigantic, one of the most spacious concertos ever written, but so quiet that when it was a novelty most people complained quite as much of its insignificance as of its length. All its most famous strokes of genius are not only mysteriously quiet, but mysterious in radiantly happy surroundings.

The whole gigantic scheme is serene.”

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98 Allegro non troppo Andante moderato Allegro giocoso Allegro energico e passionato Although the German composer Johannes Brahms wrote music imbued with intense passion, expressivity, and the fervor associated with late nineteenth century Romanticism, he often felt like a man who lived in an era after his own time. Not only did Brahms have a penchant for the forms and styles of the Classical and Baroque traditions, he actually felt rooted in them. When you think “Brahms,” what often comes to mind is music that goes so far as to epitomize the Romantic spirit. But never does Brahms drift afar from the discipline and structure of a Bach, Mozart, or Beethoven.

Although Brahms never asked for it, he became anointed heir to Beethoven as the champion of “absolute music.” Brahms’ goal was to follow the concepts of the classicist while at the same time moving forward with music rich in lyricism and the personal expressiveness of his time. However, he strongly rejected ultra emotional and overtly programmatic paths and to some extent was daunted by the shadow of Beethoven.

That it took him until his mid-forties to complete his First Symphony, a work that had a long gestation, demonstrates that he accepted Beethoven’s mantle with tremendous seriousness. In his words, “You don’t know what it’s like to be dogged by his footsteps.”

Brahms First Symphony turned out to be a sensational creation and he went on to write three more symphonic masterpieces, establishing him as the greatest symphonist not only SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

of his time, but possibly the greatest of all since Beethoven. Characterized by deep lyrical beauty, impeccable craftsmanship, emotional gravity, and remarkable staying power, who has written more convincing and moving symphonies since Beethoven?

Although each of Brahms symphonies has its champions, the consensus of critical and pubic opinion seems to be that the Fourth stands as the composer’s symphonic Olympus. Composed over the course of two summers at the small Alpine resort village of Murzzuschlag, the first two movements were completed during the summer of 1884 and the remainder the following year. It was not unusual for Brahms to express doubts about his works and to make disparaging comments about them. His initial take of what was to be his final symphony followed that pattern. He put his publisher on notice not to expect much, warning, “I’ve only put together another set of polkas and waltzes.” But true to form, such a comment presaged something extraordinary of the horizon. Having passed the half century mark and at the summit of his compositional powers – and no doubt with humor and irony as a backdrop for his words – the Symphony No. 4 is the most exalted and monumental of his works. As the eminent German musical scholar August Kretzschmar wrote, the Fourth is music that leads “into realms where joy and sorrow are hushed, and humanity bows before that which is eternal.”

Certainly there is a seriousness and gravity to the work not present in the first three symphonies. Some have even pulled out the word “tragic” to define the Fourth. The critic Friedrich Herzfeld actually termed it a work of “monumental tragedy.” During its creation it has been noted that one of Brahms’s passions was reading newly written German translations of Greek drama, including the tragedies of Sophocles. Others point to the pathetic death of his dear friend and champion, Robert Schumann, who suffered a long period of mental illness during his final days. And the subsequent unrequited love that Brahms experienced for Schumann’s widow, Clara – for whatever reasons – had to have profoundly saddened a man whose love never waned. In fact, Brahms’s very death occurred as a result of an ailment aggravated when he caught cold after a strenuous two-day journey to attend Clara’s funeral.

All that having been said, if there is a sense of the “tragic” to the Brahms Fourth, it is nothing like the “all stops pulled” pain of the Tchaikovsky “Pathetique,” to cite one example. And as profound as the work is Brahms is never over the top and remains committed to his insistence being a Classicist intent on holding the line. True, here is classical technique stretched emotionally and pulled into deeply passionate realms. But, by no means does Brahms turn his back on his roots and established musical aesthetic.

“Autumnal” and “melancholic” seem to be appropriate adjectives for the overall emotional thrust of the Symphony No. 4. After all is said and done, it seems as though in the Fourth Brahms grappled with his innermost emotions and arrived at a carefully thought-out and mature acceptance of his own mortality.

Structurally, the first movement Allegro begins almost as if in midstream. An elevated and sweeping theme grows out of a two-note motif and spans over a streaming X

accompaniment in majestic fashion. The melody is extended and passed back and forth within the orchestra. Gradually, the intensity increases and climaxes with a second theme, a fanfare like figure called forth by the winds. The cellos and horns come into play with a soaring line all the while that elements of the opening fanfare persist. A variety of melodic phrases bring the exposition to a close; the development follows and is concerned mainly with the opening theme; and then a brief but powerful coda brings the movement to an end. Clara Schumann summarized the mood of the movement this way: “It is as though one lay in springtime among the blossoming flowers, and joy and sorrow filled one’s soul in turn.”

The ensuing Andante sustains the mood of the opening movement by moving us back and forth from music that is idyllic and impassioned. A bold horn signal ushers in the movement and grows into a gentle main theme brought out by the clarinets. Contrasting luminous thematic material is then brought into the picture by the cellos and the rest of the movement inventively works out – sometimes serenely and sometimes in agitation – the previously stated thematic material.

Sparkling with incisive rhythms, the Allegro offers us the contrast of exuberant energy that adds much needed wit and humor. Projecting the character of a scherzo, the movement amuses us with melody inversions, more cheerful themes, and lighter textures. After all, we need to be ready for the magnificent power of the Allegro energico e passionato that is to follow.

The final movement is a masterwork of architecture and scoring and is considered by many to be the most profound symphonic utterance Brahms achieved. It begins with grandeur and stateliness stemming from a statement based on the Passacaglia drawn from what at the time was believed to be Bach’s Cantata No. 150, Nacht dir, Herr, verlanget mich. This melody is treated over the course of this orchestral-tour-de-force to over thirty variations. This final movement was considered quite unorthodox in its time for use of what was then seen as an archaic classical form. And to use it in a symphony? But when you remember Brahms’s respect for the musical giants who preceded him, variations on a passacaglia makes perfect sense. We are also convinced when we take in the mastery with which the composer treats each variation, each unique in instrumentation, character, tone, and rhythm, and each growing organically from what came before.

Although moments of “tragedy” do make their way through the Brahms’s Fourth, the composer elevates the work into a symphonic swan song of affirmation. Perhaps the biographer, Peter Latham, got it best when he wrote: “Before the end we have risen altogether out of sight of the shady valleys of the Andante and the cheerful merriment of the scherzo, and wind roars unmercifully over the stony slabs of the mountain-side (of the finale). It is an awesome heart-searching experience, a mighty assertion of the spirit of man.”

Single Tickets: Are currently on sale through the King Center Box Office. They may be purchased in person, by telephone (321) 242-2219 or online at BrevardSymphony.com. Single tickets may also be available at the King Center Box Office two hours prior to the concert.

Teachers and Active Military: Teachers and active military receive a 50% discount on all subscription and single tickets for series concerts (Areas 2 & 3 only). Teachers are defined as any person instructing, full time, in a learning institution (elementary, secondary or college). A military or educational ID is required.

College Students: Full time students enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution can stay “tuned in” on Facebook and Twitter for special same concert day announcements for $10 Same-Day Rush Tickets. Student I.D. is required and a small handling fee will apply. Tickets must be purchased at the box office window of the King Center. Seating will be best available. Limit two (2) per person with valid I.D. Concert Club: Students in grades 4 through 12 are eligible to join for FREE. Benefits include: Email Newsletters; Invitation to attend a BSO Open Rehearsals and option to buy subscription concert tickets for member and a guest for $6.00 each in area three or can purchase two season tickets in areas two or three for only $5 per concert per person. Excludes June 1, 2017 performance. Call the BSO office for details.

Group Sales: Groups of 20 or more members are invited to attend single series concerts at a special rate. Call the BSO Business Office for further details.

Ticket Refunds and Exchanges: Sorry, no cash refunds or exchanges on single tickets. Exchanges only available to current BSO subscribers.

Unused Tickets: Last minute conflicts sometimes occur, but your tickets should not go to waste. They make a perfect gift to a fellow music-lover. Another alternative is to return your tickets, seven (7) business days prior, to the BSO. If resold, your purchase price will be considered a tax-deductible contribution for which you will receive a receipt following the performance. Resale of tickets will be more likely the further in advance they are returned.

Lost Tickets: If you misplace your tickets, call the BSO Office and a location pass for your seat will be issued and can be picked up at the King Center Box Office the night of the performance.

Special Seating: The Brevard Symphony Orchestra encourages attendance by physically disabled patrons. For special seating information, please call the BSO Business Office.
