[ FROM THE ] MUSIC DIRECTOR Welcome to the Brevard Symphony Orchestra’s 2016-17 Season. Our programming for each concert highlights music from specific countries and regions, affording us the opportunity to take a musical trip around the world. We’ll enjoy picturesque music from America, passionate music from Russia, a delightful program of intimate repertoire from France, a colorful and fiery program of music from Spain and great masterworks from Germany and Austria. Our annual POPS Concert features favorite selections from Hollywood’s Golden Age as well as recent blockbusters.

Our roster of guest artists includes audience favorites such as pianist Terrence Wilson and acclaimed violin virtuoso Elmar Oliveira along with artists making their BSO debut including cellist Cicely Parnas and international guitar sensation Pablo Villegas. Across the season, we’ll hear beloved favorites from history’s greatest composers: Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Bach, Rachmaninoff, Copland, Bizet, Ravel, Debussy and many more. And because there’s more to the BSO than Bach and Beethoven, we’re excited to share a VERY special event we’ve added to our season at the beginning of June as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the release of perhaps the greatest album ever – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles in a special collaboration with Classic Albums Live and the King Center!

Our annual Independence Day Concert is a free performance enjoyed by thousands every year. Our Family Concert at the Cultural Arts Showcase affords us the opportunity to collaborate with other outstanding arts groups in our community as part of a free all-day event that draws thousands of audience members of all ages. And my favorite event of the year, our Annual Fifth Grade Concerts, introduces the thrill of live symphonic music to every fifth grader in Brevard County!

When times are tough, the arts are salve for the ache.” ~ Randy Cohen, ARTSBlog, April 2011 I have long been a true believer in the beauty of music, particularly symphonic music. For me, a symphonic piece is a personal journey into the life and emotions of the composer. With each note, my mind’s eye paints a picture – my vision of what the composer wanted us to “see” and hear.

Our Maestro, Christopher Confessore, has again shown inspiration in the programming for our 2016-17 concert series. And, I continue to be amazed at the talent of our musicians. When they step on that stage, you are witness to their hard work and dedication.

[ FEATURED ARTIST ] PABLO VILLEGAS Pablo Villegas is hailed by critics as one of the world’s leading classical guitarists and celebrated as a natural ambassador of Spanish culture with performances in more than 40 countries since his auspicious debut with the New York Philharmonic under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos at Avery Fisher Hall.

His “beautifully rounded guitar tone” and “soulful rendition” (The New York Times) makes him one of the most sought-after soloists by today’s foremost orchestras, conductors and festivals. A champion and supporter of new repertoire for guitar, he performed the world premiere of ‘Rounds’, the first guitar piece to have been written by five-time Academy Award-winning composer John Williams.

Pablo Villegas has performed in the presence of the Dalai Lama as well as the Royal Family of Spain and has the honor of being an Ambassador to Vivanco Foundation and its museum of wine culture in Spain, considered the world’s best

by UNESCO. Among his previous season highlights are recitals at the Aspen Music Festival and Kennedy Center as well as soloist engagements with the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, the Royal Seville Symphony, Bilbao Symphony and the National Orchestra of Lyon.

Further, he has Bartender Challenge appeared at such prestigious venues as the Philharmonie in Berlin, Carnegie Hall in New York, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, Philharmonic Hall in St. Petersburg, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, the Sala Verdi in Milan, and the Vienna Musikverein. Along with fellow Spaniard Frühbeck de Burgos, he has shared the stage with renowned conductors such as Carlos Kalmar, KING CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Juanjo Mena, and Alondra de la Parra, with whom he recorded for Sony 15 BARTENDERS FROM Classical.

Known for his outreach programs, Villegas is the founder of “The Music Without Borders Legacy”, a program sponsored by Caixa Bank that seeks to bridge communities across cultural, social, and political borders for the benefit of children and youth, which has served more than 15,000 children.

Bizet wrote lots of notes over the course of his career, including some twenty-seven operas or fragments of operas, among them The Pearl Fishers (1863), The Fair Maid of Perth (1867), and Djamileh (1871). He is also known for the Symphony in C Major (1855); Petite Suite (Jeux d’enfants) (1871); Roma Symphony (1871); L’Arlésienne (1872); Patrie Overture (1873), as well as numerous songs and works for piano.

The charm and melodic fluency of this music remains endearing; however, Bizet’s immortality rests on a singular work – Carmen. Since its inauspicious premiere at the Opéra-Comique in 1875, this compelling masterpiece has come to be recognized as perhaps the world’s most beloved and popular opera. It bears witness to Bizet’s transcendent genius as one of the supreme masters of the operatic stage, equally gifted as a dramatist and composer.

The role of Carmen in the history of opera is pivotal, for it forms the bridge between the tradition of opéra comique and the verismo style that characterizes late 19th-century Italian opera. The style

is distinguished by realistic and penetratingly honest – sometimes even crass or violent – depictions of everyday life, especially the depraved and vile lives of the so-called “degenerates” and “outlaws” of society. Bullfighters and prostitutes were in; royals and countesses were out. Carmen is the acknowledged forerunner of verismo opera and paved the way for more intense and passionate operas such as Cavalleria Rusticana (Mascagni), I Pagliacci (Leoncavallo), and Andrea Chénier (Giordano). Giordano considered Carmen as the starting point and finest manifestation of that style. The poet Théodore de Banville offered effusive praise, thanking Bizet for presenting a drama with “real-life” men and women instead of the usual Opéra-Comique “puppets.” Art was now allowed to imitate and reflect life, not the other way around.

Applause, however, was only tepidly heard when Carmen opened on March 9, 1875 at the Opéra-Comique; boos, hisses, and catcalls were seemingly more frequent during the premiere and in many of the subsequent performances. The hypersensitive Bizet thought the worst, describing his opera as “a definite and hopeless flop.” He continued, “I sense defeat… This time I am really sunk.” In exasperation, he protested, “All these bourgeois have not understood a wretched word of the work I have written for them.” The composer fell into an acute depression and exacerbated by a recurrent throat ailment, wound up sick in bed. Normally resilient, Bizet’s health continued to decline until two successive heart attacks took his life at the age of only thirty-six. His death occurred exactly three months after the first performance of Carmen. It is sad that the composer never had the chance to witness the eventual success of his opera as one of the greatest achievements of the opera stage.

Why did audiences and critics initially react so negatively to Carmen? Although complaints were given concerning the music, that it was tuneless, colorless, and unimaginative – all absurd accusations – the real problem came from the brutal realism and overt sexuality of the story itself. Inspired by Prosper Mérimée’s short novel Carmen, the opera’s plot was unlike anything the Opéra Comique had ever witnessed.

Set in Seville around the year 1830, the opera deals with the love and jealousy of Don José, who is lured away from his duty as a soldier and commitment to his childhood sweetheart Micaëla by the gypsy factory worker Carmen. Later, he allows her to escape from custody and intoxicated with passion is enticed to join the smugglers with whom Carmen socializes, but is overtaken with unbridled jealousy. The tension comes to a boiling point when Carmen decides to direct her advances towards the more glamorous bullfighter Escamillo. In the final act, as the crowds congregate around the bullring in Seville, Don José tracks down Carmen and stabs her to death.

Confronted with a story centered on “sex and violence,” the audiences of the Opéra Comique were shocked, dismayed, and scandalized. They were more accustomed to the “Disney” fare of the day, i.e., G-rated “family” entertainment along the lines of Auber, SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Donizetti, and Offenbach. Quite simply, they were completely unprepared for the sordid nature and graphic sensuality of Carmen. The critical reception was similarly negative, even at times downright nasty. One critic complained that the gestures of the original Carmen were “an incarnation of vice, and there is something licentious even in the tones of her voice.” Another added, “It would be difficult to go much farther without provoking the intervention of police.”

It didn’t take long, though, for Carmen to seduce audiences through its irresistible melodies, the exoticism of its Spanish setting, and the gripping story of “love gone bad.”

Even as audience members stormed out, one attendee—Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky—called it “the perfect opera,” and boldly predicted that within ten years the work would become the world’s most popular opera.

Joaquín Rodrigo (1901-1999) Concierto de Aranjuez Spanning nearly the whole of the twentieth century, Rodrigo’s life began on November 22, 1901 in Sagunta (on the eastern coast of Spain), ending nearly a hundred years later in 1999, when he passed in Madrid. From the age of three, he lost his sight from an attack of diphtheria; however, blindness did not prevent him from following his profound musical gifts, which were present from early childhood. Rodrigo’s parents found a place for him in a school for blind children in Valencia, and at the age of eight he embarked on lessons in piano, violin, harmony and composition. All of his scores were written on a Braille music typewriter and subsequently dictated to a copyist.

In 1927, he followed in the steps of his fellow Spaniards Albéniz, Granados, Falla and Turina, and moved to Paris, where he became a pupil of Paul Dukas at the Schola Cantorum. Thanks to a grant from Spain to study musicology at the Sorbonne and the Paris Conservatoire, Rodrigo extended his stay, and yet again when he was prevented from returning home with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War in 1936. At the War’s conclusion in 1939, after a dozen years abroad he finally returned home and settled in VIII

Madrid. The very next year, on November 9, 1940, the premiere of a new work for guitar and orchestra changed the composer’s life and career forever. The work was named the Concierto de Aranjez (1938-39), after the idyllic and verdant town near Madrid that served as the site of the palatial summer home built in the mid-18th century for the Spanish court and ensuing generations of Spanish kings. It was written at the urging of guitarist Regino Sainz de la Maza, who introduced it in Barcelona. The premiere was wildly successful and the Concierto soon gained such popularity that it brought Rodrigo universal international acclaim. Within the decade, in 1947, he was made Manuel de Falla professor of music at the University of Madrid, and would go on to receive several international honors, including the French Légion d’honneur (Legion of Honor). Over the course of a productive career, Rodrigo was to write several more works for solo instruments and orchestra, including for guitar(s): Fantasia para un Gentilhombre (1954); Concierto Madrigal (1966); Concierto Andaluz (1967); and Concierto para una Fiesta (1982). Also, for harp, Concierto Serenata (1954); flute, Concierto Pastorale (1978); and cello, Concierto como un Divertimento (1981).

The Concierto de Aranjuez nevertheless remains as Rodrigo’s supreme masterpiece. The full range of the guitar’s possibilities (in the hands of a brilliant guitarist) are fully realized in the work, including articulation, tonal quality, color, poignancy, and virtuosity. It never fails to dazzle and move deeply, the former in the outer movements and the later in the central Adagio, which is the epicenter and heart of the piece. The ebullient opening Allegro con spirito is filled with vibrant Spanish rhythms, including the fandango, as well as stylizations from flamenco. The finale – Allegro gentile – is likewise imbued with Spanish folk-like rhythms and melodies, set against elegant and Baroque-tinged counterpoint.

As satisfying as are all the movements of the Concierto, the haunting Adagio leaves an indelible and unforgettable impression on every listener. It is as if this music comes from the composer’s soul and is given to ours through some of the most beautiful and poignant writing ever created for the guitar. There is a deep sense of nostalgia throughout, expressed memorably by the soulful English horn in a mournful melody inspired by the saeta, a song performed during Holy Week as part of the processions by religious confraternities that move slowly through the streets of cities and towns in southern Spain.

This melody is tossed between English horn, guitar, and orchestra, increasing in intensity until a passionate climax is reached, then followed by a denouement into stillness.

It is worth noting that there may be more beyond the saeta to explaining the emotional intensity of the Adagio. According to the account of one of Rodrigo’s friends, it arose from the profound grief the composer felt at the death of his infant son. Still another perspective comes from his wife, who stresses the Concierto’s nostalgic tone: “It was an evocation of the happy days of our honeymoon, when we walked in the park at Aranjuez—and at the same time, it was a love song.”

Rodrigo offered this astute reflection on his Concierto de Aranjuez: “Some perceive Goya’s shadow in the notes of its music, full of melancholy emotion…” He continues: “In its melody lingers the perfume of magnolias, the song of birds and the whisper of fountains SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH US @BREVARDSYMPHONY ON

Although his outward demeanor was rather cool, taciturn, ascetic and reserved, there was a fire within that manifested itself in the most passionate and sensuous music to have come out of Spain. Born in the seaport town of Cádiz, throughout his career Falla committed to producing music of an authentic Spanish soul, inspired by his country’s great polyphonic and folk traditions. Falla is best known for his colorful and lushly scored theatrical works, most notably the Iberian flavored ballet scores: El amor brujo (Love the Magician; 1915), from which the Ritual Fire Dance is often drawn for pops programs; and the fetching El Sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat; 1919).

Along with Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados, Manuel de Falla is one of Spain’s most important composers of the post-modern era; some would say he counts as perhaps the country’s greatest composer. Certainly, there is none more authentic in terms of nationalistic fervor and dedication to Spanish folk idioms. Falla’s masterpiece and most popular work is the score he wrote for the two-act ballet, The Three-Cornered Hat. It traces back to the smaller-scaled pantomime, The Magistrate and the Miller’s Wife, first staged in Madrid in 1917. Published in 1874 as El sombrero de tres picos (The ThreeCornered Hat), the plot is based on a story by the Spanish poet Pedro de Alarcòn.

Upon the recommendation of Stravinsky, who characterized his fellow composer as “even smaller than myself, and as modest and withdrawn as an oyster… and the shyest man I have ever met” – the great impresario Sergei Diaghilev eagerly sought out the Spaniard and so happened on the performance in Madrid. Impressed and filled with enthusiasm for The Magistrate, Diaghilev immediately offered the composer a commission to expand X

the score into a fully staged ballet. It all came to fruition following the First World War, when the Ballet Russe (Russian Ballet) gave a spectacular premiere in London at the Alhambra Theater on July 22, 1919, conducted by Ernest Ansermet. Diaghilev brought in some “heavy hitters” for the production; with choreography by the troupe’s lead dancer, Léonide Massine, and designs, sets, and costumes by Pablo Piccaso. Praising Falla’s score, Massine wrote that it “seemed to us very exciting, and its blend of violence and passion was similar to much of the music of local folk-dances. Both Diaghilev and I felt that the story and music offered us the potentials of a full-length ballet.” Indeed, The Three-Cornered Hat was an international hit and one of the most successful ballets in the history of Diaghilev’s Ballet Russe; moreover, it was a significant milestone in establishing Falla’s international reputation.

At the heart of The Three-Cornered Hat’s immense appeal is Falla’s ability to convincingly capture the sounds and rhythms of his beloved country. The ballet begins with arresting choral “olés” and the distinctive Spanish sounds of strongly accented castanets and percussion. A flourish of trumpets captures our attention and is reminiscent of the fanfare that is played as a torero (bullfighter) enters a bullring. Later, we’ll hear gypsy and flamenco elements and various rhythmically vibrant, traditional dance forms from Falla’s native Andalusia, in particular, the fandango in “Dance of the Miller”; seguidillas in “Dance of the Neighbors”; farruca (flamenco dance) in ”Dance of the Miller”; and the jota of the finale. Musicologist Gilbert Chase wrote in the textbook, The Music of Spain, that Falla’s music is “an unceasing quest for the musical soul of Spain.”

Based on the 1874 story by Alarcòn, the plot of The Three-Cornered Hat is part comedic and silly, and part social commentary. Humor has its place in the ballet, but it also enjoys taking the ruling/upper class down a few pegs, and celebrates the equality of all classes and the primacy of the individual. The butt of the jokes is, of course, the provincial magistrate whose symbol is a three-cornered hat. The stumbling, bumbling, and lecherous Corregidor tries, in vain, to seduce the pretty wife of the local miller. It doesn’t seem to matter to him that the wife is committed and loyal to her husband, and will simply not be tempted to stray. In fact, she conspires with her husband to embarrass and humiliate the magistrate through tricks and traps. Even though he throws her husband in jail, the wife simply laughs and teases him with a bunch of grapes, laughing and running off when he falls into the millstream. Mayhem and mistaken-identities ensue until eventually the miller and wife become happily and safely reunited. The villagers exact a peasant form of justice by tossing a straw effigy of the magistrate wrapped in a blanket up into the air. In celebration of the happy ending, the villagers engage in a joyous jota, which brings the ballet to a dizzying and spirited finish.

Single Tickets: Are currently on sale through the King Center Box Office. They may be purchased in person, by telephone (321) 242-2219 or online at BrevardSymphony.com. Single tickets may also be available at the King Center Box Office two hours prior to the concert.

Teachers and Active Military: Teachers and active military receive a 50% discount on all subscription and single tickets for series concerts (Areas 2 & 3 only). Teachers are defined as any person instructing, full time, in a learning institution (elementary, secondary or college). A military or educational ID is required.

College Students: Full time students enrolled in a two-year or four-year institution can stay “tuned in” on Facebook and Twitter for special same concert day announcements for $10 Same-Day Rush Tickets. Student I.D. is required and a small handling fee will apply. Tickets must be purchased at the box office window of the King Center. Seating will be best available. Limit two (2) per person with valid I.D. Concert Club: Students in grades 4 through 12 are eligible to join for FREE. Benefits include: Email Newsletters; Invitation to attend a BSO Open Rehearsals and option to buy subscription concert tickets for member and a guest for $6.00 each in area three or can purchase two season tickets in areas two or three for only $5 per concert per person. Excludes June 1, 2017 performance. Call the BSO office for details.

Group Sales: Groups of 20 or more members are invited to attend single series concerts at a special rate. Call the BSO Business Office for further details.

Ticket Refunds and Exchanges: Sorry, no cash refunds or exchanges on single tickets. Exchanges only available to current BSO subscribers.

Unused Tickets: Last minute conflicts sometimes occur, but your tickets should not go to waste. They make a perfect gift to a fellow music-lover. Another alternative is to return your tickets, seven (7) business days prior, to the BSO. If resold, your purchase price will be considered a tax-deductible contribution for which you will receive a receipt following the performance. Resale of tickets will be more likely the further in advance they are returned.

Lost Tickets: If you misplace your tickets, call the BSO Office and a location pass for your seat will be issued and can be picked up at the King Center Box Office the night of the performance.

Special Seating: The Brevard Symphony Orchestra encourages attendance by physically disabled patrons. For special seating information, please call the BSO Business Office.
