Solitude is a place where the main intention is to frame up different views by using each of the tube, and those pointing to the sky are for people to have a framed view as well and observe what they do not usually aware of. This project is placed at SMU Connexion. The exact location is at the walkway in between two SMU buildings. This space is also used for transitioning from Fort Canning to SMU Connexion and from School of Accountancy to SMU Connexion.
This is my slice of the city. It is a journey with approximately 1.4 kilometre long from point A (Singapore Shopping Centre) to point B (Raffles City). My task is to walk through the whole journey which is following the indicated line and document the unique elements that I have found on the slice. There are few obstacles during the journey and I had to find another way to pass through them and get back on the slice as close as possible. The slice cuts through some of the landmarks such as Fort Canning Park and Singapore Management University.
Through the collection of the datas that I have captured during the walk, I laid them out and organized according to each of the location. Some places will have more datas depends on the environment situations. The first slice profile is the simplest form and showcasing the unique elements that I have documented. The second slice profile is similar but with the different heights of terrain as there are hills, slopes and flat roads. Besides, the verbs for each locations are the key elements and some can be found to be the same yet different views. For the last slice profile, I have developed it and turned my perspective into elevation, there are the main structures that I have captured and with the different heights of the ground level. It is to showcase the overall experience of my slice and differentiate the spaces used in the public.
At this stage, I have gathered the datas and analysed the different keywords that are best described the scenarios. Each of the keywords represents the refinement of the walk itself. Thereafter, I further analysed and refined them into stonger keywords to summarise. The first and second versions of keywords are gathered without using device and I have concluded with the keyword ‘Belief’. Third version is gathered using the device that I have made to execute and I have concluded with the keyword ‘Framing’.
Frustrated Bored
After obtaining the keywords, I did some research and analysis on people’s emotions and the sheltered spaces. By looking at the different colours indication, it helps to identify certain emotions of people at different places. Sheltered space is important to my project as it helps in the user experience despite is natural or man-made.
Optimistic Happy
The blue lens allows me to capture what I will feel when everything turns into blue in the city. The reason of choosing blue is because of ‘humanity’ and ‘factuality’. To me, blue does not mean sadness, it means truth, honesty and optimism. Hence, I want the device turns the city into blue. Another reason of choosing blue is because it brings calm to people, it is also resembling the sky and the ocean, especially the sky which is 360 degrees surrounding us in the earth. I believe that when people cool down and look at the sky or ocean, they will reflect themselves and reveal the true feelings.
This device helps me to alter my view of the city. Framing the view in this way adds importance to what I see. The frame causes me to look at it and think about the scene in a particular way. It freezes the scene to a particular moment in time and the static image formed tells the whole story. Framing a view controls what is seen. The control can be aesthetic, allusive or ambiguous.
These are the datas collected with the assistance of my device. I have collected both framed and original views to compare and understand the spaces.
That shows the similar human interaction
That can be connected to each other
From the datas collected, I have consolidated all of them and started analysing them into two different analyses. The first one is according to the similar activity that shows the similar human interaction and the similar environment that can be connected to each other. By imagining to switch the places accordingly, same activity will still be carried out but in different locations. Moreover, for the similar environment on the slice, those linked with the lines can actually be connected together to form another new space.
The starting point is more bustling which has higher volume and good allusion.
This space is part of the Fort Canning which is more tranquil with lower volume and bad allusion.
This space is part of the ending of Fort Canning. Due to the structure of the National Museum, it adds the allusion through the lens and it has a slightly higher volume.
The ending point is a bustling space as well which has high volume with good allusion.
This small space is the road in between two buildings so it is more bustling with higher volume. Although it is surrounded by buildings, but it has bad allusion.
For the second data analysis, the blue circle symbolises good allusion while red circle symbolises bad allusion. Allusion in this case is meant by the clues of the connection for each of the space. Besides, the thicker wavy line symbolises higher volume of traffics while thinner wavy line symbolises lower volume of traffics. Traffic in this case is meant by the vehicle and also the human flow.
My slice is the city of
My chosen site is at SMU Connexion. The exact location is at the walkway in between two SMU buildings. This space is also used for transitioning from Fort Canning to SMU Connexion and from School of Accountancy to SMU Connexion.

Tunnel Vision (focal point)
Social Zone (texture)
Dark Zone (value)
There are five different zones in this space. Each of them has their own unique point. Besides, all these zones form the overall space of ‘SOLITUDE’.
Discomfort Zone (asymmetrical)
Observatory (curiosity)
Here are the rendered images showing the exterior view of the proposed space. It is lifted off the ground by concrete stairs and the side elevated platform. The containers will be arranged in all directions like a starburst, with arms pushing out in all directions.
It has 7 entrances/exits throughout the space, this is to enhance the human flow during peak hours.
The main intention of this whole space is to frame up certain views by using each of the tube, and those pointing to the sky are for people to have a framed view as well and observe what they do not usually aware of.
A structure is not just about the fantastic facade design, but the interior is equally important. Here are the rendered images showing the interior space and how are the people going to interact with the given space.
The interiors will have different tones of blue walls and concrete floors with square windows in the container offering views of the SMU Connexion surroundings.
These spaces are called “Tunnel Vision”, one is designed with half tunnel and the other is a full length of tunnel inside the space. Tunnel has a rounded shape and resembles the camera lens, this is why I use tunnel to frame up views and allow people to imagine they are inside a huge camera and be more focused on what they capture.
These spaces are called “Social Zone”, the walls have a darker tone of blue with wall grass. The floors are covered with artificial grass patch, this allows people to sit on it and have a different texture in the space. Due to the comfort of this space, it will attract more people to step in and enjoy the design feature inside.
These spaces are called “Dark Zone”, despite there are dim lights in the spaces, due to the overall light source provided, they are dimmer than other spaces. The intention of the dim light to no light at all is to allow people experience the spaces with barely light provided. It might look dangerous or scary in this two spaces, because there is only one light source in each of them.
These spaces are called “Discomfort Zone”, I design and place those frame structures in the space to make it not easy to walk through. With the different angles of frame structures, they will make the view becomes asymmetrical as both sides are different. Also, it may cause people to feel uncomfortable to look at from on end.
The space on the next page is called “Observatory”, it is the centre area of the whole space and acts as a critical zone. At this area, people get the chance to look at all of the tubes that are pointing to the sky. There are six in total in different directions. And because of the design position for every pointed out’s tubes, that will make people be more aware of the upper part and curiosity formed in this space. The design concept of each upper tube is resembling the lower part of tubes, the only difference is people could not access the upper part physically.
This project is mainly to use an existing space with my creative and innovative design to promote Cisco System and allow more people to understand about this company in Singapore. The location of this project is at the Japanese Food Street in Jurong Point Shopping Centre which are located at basement 1. The overall design presents this street well and gives the space has a good image.
The journey of this project is started from two verbs - ‘Eat’ and ‘Drink”. The words are simple but full of imagination beyond the meanings. As the designer of this project, I need to think of other possibilities to bring out the meanings. Eating can be focusing on the process of chewing the food or shadows inside the mouth derived from the motion of chewing. Moreover, with a deeper understanding, eating can be observed as the food is disappering gradually. Likewise, drinking is a process of liquid passing through oesophagus and going into our stomach. Drinking can be expressed as hydrating and refreshing as well. Thinking in another perspective, drinking is to satiate a dry feeling in the throat or mouth. Therefore, spaces with high humidity can express as reducing thirst.
After finalised the two verbs - “EAT” & “DRINK”, next is going to analyse and understand fully the elements that appear in these two verbs. Then, I filmed a 120 seconds short video about “EAT” & “DRINK”. The shadows formed by different glasses were interesting and they were actually forming a very 3D look in the video.
Using light and shadow in a concealed object like container or box can bring out the feeling of a mouth. I played with movement of the box under a bright space to resemble a mouth was moving and showcasing the biting’s motion.
Other than that, I have tried to take a close-up view of water droplet. As we are always looking at water as normal liquid, but we do not really observe the details of the surface of the water droplet. Hence, I tried different approaches and captured the crystal look of the surface.
After the first video has launched, it came to my attention that some of the scenes inside the 120 seconds video were still quite literal and the next task was to film a 30 seconds video. Based on the same verbs and filmed the best ideas in just 30 seconds. In this 30 seconds video, I have the scenes of inside an enclosed space seeing outside and bouncing at the same time. Also, dropping red date, rice and salt as the eating emotion. Moreover, dropping the ice cubes and water being sucked up by vacuum tube as the drinking emotion. Last but not least, closing with three different kinds of lighting as the shadow part and wrapped up the video.
After the process of filming, I have entered another stage where required to choose ten best scene of pictures from the 30 seconds video. I have spent about 3 hours to figure out and have a rough idea for my pictures layout.
This is my second attempt and took me one day to figure out. The combination of pictures form a “maze” according to similar elements.
This is my third attempt and last layout. I replaced a few images and started to play this mind matching game again. I sat there for few hours and puzzling according to my perception.
When comes to this part, I was required to trace out the details from the previous layout matching. Trace out whatever I saw is the difficult and confusing part as I saw many things and I will need to think a way to connect them and avoid from stopping in the middle of tracing. This process took me approximately one week to finish.
Bottom picture is printed out in a A0 format after I have used Photoshop to edit the lineweight.
After the photoshop version of the tracing part is out, the lines are clearly showed on the A0 size paper. Thinking about that piece of drawing is a plan view, now I will come out with another piece which shows the section view. Those dotted lines represent the details at the back. Also, the volume of the sections are based on the plan view as well, thus there are some parts with high volume or low volume.
This model was built according to the plan and section views. From the pictures, I have used white cardboard, corrugated board and satay stick. Then, I used UHU glue to stick them together. The pictures are only showing the first 30% of the entire model.
This is my final model which is completely done. It has a height of about 850mm and 1000mm of length. The overall look of my model is simlar to a robot mechanism. There are eight materials in total to make this model. Grey cardboard, white cardboard. corrugated board, thin acrylic sheet, transparent acrylic sheet, satay stick, aluminium foil and metal coil.
I was required to modify from the 2D base lines to a completely new concept of design. These are the mini mock-ups based on the modified design. Eventually I had chosen the third mock-up and proceeded to blue foam stage.
This is the blue foam module. I made it according to what I have come out previously in the 3D mock-up. I have modified certain part like the horizontal piece between the curve and the opposite standing parts.
This is my second attempt which is inspired by the model in my first attempt. The concept behind this module is actually to have four simple pillars. The idea of shorter pillar came from the mini mock-up which is inspired by my 3D concept. The curvy edge has been modified to the right angled form which is connected to the top of the module. This newly formed module is called “MODULE A” and it is a POSITIVE SPACE.
Making another module is to form a negative space that can fit and combine with the module A. This module is slightly bigger than module A. The purpose of making module B is to make sure that the new module is able to join with the module A and fill up all those empty space within module A.
I have tried different ways to fit them together. I have four possibilities in total to merge them into one module. Some can be low and long, some can be tall and thin, etc. All of the combination modules are called “MODULE A + B”.
After I have my Module A & B, now I am going to apply those fitting methods to come out with five possibilities of the modules in various possible designs such as Structures, Objects, Chairs, Table, Doghouse, Cat Tree, Hamster habitat, Bookshelf, etc. My first possibility is a Divider, it is about 3m in height and 4m in length. It can be used for residential or commercial purposes. It is mainly made of timber, hence it can be very heavy.
Cisco System is a multinational corporation whose mission and vision statements reflect the leadership potential in creating a more interactive and integrated world for all. Cisco System is the company that I have chosen to be my client.
I will be helping this company to promote them in Singapore by using the modules which I have created previously among the 5 possibilities.
As my client is a world leading company, I would like to promote this company in an interesting place. Therefore, I have chosen the Japanese Food Street in Jurong Point Shopping Centre which are located at basement 1. This space is comfortable and attractive. The overall design presents this space well and gives the space has a good image. The lighting is making difference compared to other spaces in the mall. This space is clean and provides photo opportunities for people been here.
This is the specific space where I have chosen for the place to promote Cisco Systems. This space is within 750 - 900sqft. It is a long street resembling the food street in Japan, with both sides of shops and food stalls. Along this street, there are only two Japanese shops and others are all food stalls.
This is the idea and concept I have for the space. The dividers are came from my first possibility of creating an object. I planned to use them throughout the space so when people enter the space, they will walk through and enjoy it space by space without knowing that they have actually walked pass a Japanese Street. The purpose of the dividers are not only to separate the space, but they are also used to display the products of Cisco Systems.
The brown modules which are on the ceiling and ground are made of timber. Moreover, the grey modules are made of timber.
The ceiling design is basically using lots of the dividers and lay them out in a diagonal position for the entire ceiling of the food street. Also, all the dividers has different lengths and they are actually referring to the logo of Cisco System. They will be very compact and dense in a way that they cover the ceiling even the ceiling lights.
This is the escalator area where is right beside the Japanese Food Street. It is a escalator coming down from Level 1. Hence, I have included this space for my proposed idea. I want to bring out the atmosphere which people get attracting and wondering what is going on in the Japanese Food Street. This flow is intentionally there to show people who are passing by and make them to have the interaction with those modules.
This project is to help out the inmates to reintegrate back into the society. In order to do so, individuals, organisations and employers do not just offer second chances when they accept ex-offender. In fact, their actions inspire others as well. We aim to build a community where ex-offenders are empowered to look beyond their past and towards the future. The journey is for them to make but we ensure that it would not be a lonely one. The location of this project is at the Bras Basah Complex - Central Atrium.
The journey of this project is started from the four aspects. Work and living spaces of inmates, in-care programme for inmates, reintegration of ex-offenders and community support for ex-offenders. For each of the aspects, it links to the words that I have come out with. Above shows the possible images that illustrate the meanings of each word.
This is the Bras Basah Complex which is the site of this project. Among the spaces, I have chosen the central atrium as my project location. It has the length of 23490mm and width of 14040mm. It has a total of 6 floors including the basement (carpark). The central atrium is in the shape of rectangle and is very spacious. There is no other building elements occupying the space of the central atrium except the U-shaped staircase connecting the first floor to the fifth floor. This space is more crowded as compared to other place in the complex as it is located at the centre, hence people will usually use it to access other places.
This is the first design of my idea. It is being built by stacking up block by block. There will be 3 storeys in total. The only entrance to enter the space is at level 1. At the level 2, there is a ‘Prison’ area to allow people to view and experience. To add, the only way to access all the levels is by taking the elevator in the building.
This is the second design of my idea. The different floor represents each aspect.
1st floor : Work and living spaces of inmates.
2nd floor : In-care programme for inmates.
3rd floor : Reintegration for ex-offenders.
4th floor : Community support for ex-offenders.
This is my third idea which is totally different from the previous one. It is a two stories structure. The first storey will ledge onto the second floor of the central atrium while the second storey will be connected to the third floor of the central atrium. There are two entrance at level 1 and the only exit will be at level 2. Also, there are two areas are extruded out at level 1 which are the “prison”.
This is the first study model which came from the modified version of ideation 1. Now it is being stacked till 4 storeys. Every storey represents an aspect as well as the changed of the emotions. The reason of choosing idea 2 as my final idea to further work on it as it is more appealing to me. However, idea 3 is too refined and boxy. As peers’ responses, they think it is too simple with boxy style. I also think that it is not innovative enough to attract people entering this space. Hence, this idea is more creative and innovative to work on.
The first view is the isometric view of the façade, there are four same size of containers being stacked irregularly to show the hierarchy.
The second view is the interior of the container. It is a confined space in a horizontal manner.
The third view is showing the plan view of the model. The little square hole is where the elevator located. It can go from the first storey all the way up to the open-air space at the fifth storey.
Throughout the whole process, I keep the idea of ‘container’ and try different styles and layouts. Every idea has included the four aspects of the project.
This space is the first container of the building and it is located at the second floor of the Bras Basah building. This space showcases the first stage which is the ‘Work and living spaces of inmates’. From the entrance, people will see the wall-mounted sticks on the middle piece of wall. This is to bring out the fearfulness to the environment. Further inside, there are three different sizes of wall-mounted sticks are arranged in the gradual manner, again is to create the same feeling as the first part. Besides, people will have to go through the opening and make an u turn to access another opening. The second opening leads to a one-flight stairs which is connecting to the second floor.
This space is the second container of the building and it is located at the third floor of the Bras Basah building. This space showcases the second stage which is the ‘In-care programme for inmates’. Coming up from the first floor via the one-flight stairs, people will reach an outdoor space where they can have a view of downstairs and the surrounding. After that, they will have to walk on a bridge to access the second container.
Along the first path, there is an opening almost near to the middle of the drywall, people can either walk through or make an u turn at the end of the container. At the second path, there are two pieces of drywall are obstructing and making the path narrower as to show the difficulty of getting use of the society.
This is the third container of the building and it is located at the fourth floor od the Bras Basah building. The first part of this container showcases the third stage which is the ‘Reintegration of ex-offenders’. Coming up from the second floor via the two-flights stairs, people will reach a another outdoor space which is slightly larger than the previous one. Once entered the from the first opening of this container, there is a ‘C’ shape path and in between there are two openings leading to the same space. The part is showing the reintegration of the ex-offenders, even though they enter from the different openings, yet they will still reach out to the same space. The fourth stage is located in the third container which is together with the third stage. The second space where it is a larger area is where the fourth stage happens which is the ‘Community support for ex-offenders’.
