Finding friends with Sons in Retirement AMY SCHRADER

I’ve paid my dues to the working world, and now it’s time to enjoy life and have some fun.

orman Jackson had never heard of a retired men’s club when he left the work-

force 17 years ago, after a career as a sales representative for Lanier Copiers.

“I’d never heard of it and didn’t know they existed,” said Jackson, an 81-year-old Brentwood resident, who belongs to the Brentwood Sons in Retirement (SIR).

SIR is a social group for retired and semiretired men that hosts monthly luncheons with guest speakers and plans social activities, such as bowling leagues, beer tastings, wine tastings, golf outings, pickleball games, couples events, holiday events and more.

“A friend of a friend mentioned it to me, and I thought it sounded like a good idea,” he said.

Since Jackson joined, he has enjoyed the companionship and planned activities with other retired and semiretired men in the area.

“I’ve paid my dues to the working world, and now it’s time to enjoy life and have some fun,” said Jackson.

Sons in Retirement, a social group for retired and semiretired men, plans monthly activities for its members, including an annual Mother’s Day luncheon, which was at Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill in Brentwood this year and featured an Elvis impersonator.

California, regardless of their age, with a mission to improve the lives of their members through fun activities, events and friendships formed within the group. There are no secret handshakes, and the group is not affiliated with any political cause or religious group.

“We’re just a bunch of guys who like to have a good time,” said Jackson.

Besides the Brentwood branch, there is also a SIR Discovery Bay branch, which also hosts a monthly luncheon and several fun activities for its members.

According to Tom Kirtley, the group’s membership director, Discovery Bay SIR’s youngest member is 60 years old and the oldest member is 93.

“The camaraderie amongst the group

is amazing,” said Kirtley. “We are an eclectic group of guys who enjoy getting together, talking and doing different activities. It’s a really great place to get to know people.”

Both the Brentwood and Discovery Bay SIR groups are welcoming new members.

Getting fit with local champions PEGGIE SCHUITEMAKER

hhh, summertime! Bathing suits, swimming, shorts and sleeveless shirts. It

wasn’t until the mailman delivered a letter from Kaiser Permanente with news about Silver & Fit, an exercise and healthy aging program, that this 67-year-old woman wondered how many bathing-suit summers were in her future.

Not ready to give up on all those wonderful outdoor activities, I signed up for the no-cost, fitness-facility program, which meant I could go to the fitness club or exercise center of my choice. That is when I put on my big girl britches – or in this case, my brand new workout outfit – and met my first of the three champion local business men who have already changed my life.

Travon Covington, fitness manager at In-Shape in Brentwood, met me with a warm handshake and friendly smile.

I expected to be members of the “Bay Watch” cast, I was genuinely surprised to see regular people of all ages and sizes in various stages of their fitness program.

With a big sigh of relief, I joined Travon for a quick tour of the facility.

After a series of simple exercises and evaluation of my capabilities, we discussed a program with a personal trainer to get

me on track. His words were, “We will take good care of you, I promise.”

I dropped my workout towel in the bin by the front door and practically skipped to my car. I did it, and it was painless.

My next visit was to Alan Iannaccone, a local chiropractor, whose name is as familiar as Main Street in Brentwood.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, men diagnosed with melanoma between the ages of 15 and 39 were 55 percent more likely to die from the disease than females diagnosed with melanoma from the same age group.

Likewise, the incidence of melanoma in men ages 80 and older is three times higher than women of the same age.

While you can’t turn back the clock and apply sunscreen, you can find a doctor to help you keep your skin healthy.

Dr. Robert E. Beer, of Balfour Dermatology in Brentwood, is East County’s expert at diagnosing and treating several skin conditions, including skin cancer.

“Skin cancer is more prevalent in men, because traditionally, men have more jobs outdoors than women; typically have shorter hair, exposing more skin to the sun; play sports with more sun exposure; have more perspiration; and are less likely than women to apply protective products and SPF,” said Beer.

For those who are unsure of their current skin health, Balfour Dermatology is a full-service dermatology practice that offers a variety of skin-care services and specializes in the detection and treatment of skin cancer. The key to treating skin cancer is early detection and prevention.

Beer also recommends skin checks, either annually or more frequently if you have a previous skin-cancer history, or anytime a mole, birthmark or freckle changes in shape, size or color, or something new develops. Taking care of your skin will not only help improve your own health, but set an example for others in your family to follow.

“Our children learn by example and what they see us doing,” said Beer. “It is our responsibility to show them with our prevention how they can care for their skin and prevent sun damage, which can lead to very serious consequences. If you’re not doing it for yourself, do it for them.”
