On June 22, two new resident deputies will begin patrolling the streets of Discovery Bay – the first such addition to the town’s police services in decades. Lt. Mike Burton of Delta Station made the announcement at the regular CSD meeting on June 3. Along with the arrival of deputies Mark Spaulding and Bryan Michaud, the town will also welcome the return of Crime Specialist Anthony Fontenot. A new patrol car marked with the Discovery Bay town logo is also in the works. “These guys (deputies) are excited and looking forward to getting out here,” said Burton. “These are officers that requested to come out to Discovery Bay. On a cloudy Friday morning, Kathleen and Andie Cook are busy carrying their pintsized watering cans – half full of water and spilling as they go – back and forth to their newly planted plot of tomatoes and assorted seedlings. For the Discovery Bay sisters, 6 and 2, the joy is in the doing, but as nearby gardeners smile at the girls’ efforts, it becomes increasingly clear that the youngsters are sowing more

than produce on the grounds of St. Anne Catholic Church in Byron. They are also growing a sense of community. “I love bringing the girls here,” said mom K.C. Cook. “It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also nice for them to learn that tomatoes don’t grow in the produce aisle of the grocery store.” Which is exactly the point – or at least part of it.
