Boat parade cruises into holidays by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

Water enthusiasts displayed their partiality to pageantry last weekend during one of the town’s biggest holiday events – the Discovery Bay Lighted Boat Parade. The annual waterside party drew a variety of entries from members of the Discovery Bay Yacht Club as well as non-members. The result, according to organizer Pat Anderson, was another spectacular, sparkling event. “We got lucky and had perfect weather, with no fog, this year. So it was a great evening. The boat parade is a tradition with most yacht clubs in the area, and we have been doing this for years. But what’s special about Discovery Bay’s is that many of the residents plan their holiday celebrations around our see Parade page 22A

It was years in the making and took mountains of work, but when Kevin Graves learned that the first of the Gold Star license plates were finally ready to roll, he had just one thing to say – Hooyah. “It’s a fantastic accomplishment, a tremendous team effort and it feels great to have finally gotten it done,” said Graves, a Discovery Bay resident whose son Joey was killed in Iraq in 2007. “It just feels really great.” The idea for the California plates was developed by Graves and Modesto resident Mike Anderson –who also lost a son in Iraq – as a way to honor other Gold Star families

And last week, California was added to the list, as the first of the 7,500 license plates was presented to Graves and Anderson at a ceremony in Sacramento. In attendance were Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Secretary of California Department of Veterans Affairs Roger Brautigan, Director of the California Department of Motor Vehicles George Valverde, former State Sen. Dave Cogdill and numerous local Gold Star families. “The importance of this is not just for our children, but see Plates page 22A
