At parks in Discovery Bay, it’s a relatively common sight to see residents throwing balls for their dogs or playing with their furry friends while they’re off leash. However, the scene is not so idyllic from the viewpoint of town staff, especially when children and other pets are put at risk. “People are getting bitten in our parks,” said Brian Miller, the town’s parks and landscape manager. “We’ve had at least two dog-bite incidents in Slifer Park in the last year, including one injury to a member of the town staff, which required intervention from the sheriff’s officer and county animal control. Sheriff’s in Discovery Bay have a new tool for fighting speeding violations, thanks to a donation from the Discovery Bay West P6 advisory committee. Deputies have recently begun using handheld, light-detection and ranging (LIDAR) radar guns and dashboard-mounted units in response to ongoing resident complaints to the town’s community services district (CSD). “I believe the radar and LI-

DAR units are very effective in reducing speeders,” said patrol commander Lt. Hobbs. “The deputies are already using them and issuing citations (to help supplement the highway patrol). The word is spreading around the community by posts on Facebook and the Nextdoor website.” Two handheld LIDAR units were purchased at the cost of $1,500 each, and two vehiclemounted radar units were purchased at the cost of $2,400 each.
