In Lisa McBride’s fifth-grade class at Discovery Bay Elementary School, students are learning that kindness rocks. Kindness Rocks, the international movement fostering compassion through the simple act of painting inspirational quotes on rocks, has found its most recent advocates in Discovery Bay. McBride recently introduced the idea of the kindness project to her students while the class was reading the book “Wonder,” by R.J. Palacio. The book focuses on being sym-

New downtown businesses on the horizon Homecoming by Kyle Szymanski Staff Writer

Manny Vierra, owner of local construction and development companies, has plans to shake up downtown Brentwood. Vierra hopes to build a 6,000-square-foot building for future tenant use near Brentwood Cleaners and McCauley Plaza on First Street, followed by the construction of a two-story restaurant with rooftop dining at 200 Oak St., across from Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill, on land that once housed a gas station. The longtime businessman also recently announced that Beyond the Terrace, formerly in The Streets of Brentwood, will likely open within the next month on Oak Street, on the property he owns at the former location of

Manny Vierra Little Miss Everything. “Downtown Brentwood is growing up,” said Vierra. “It’s getting very popular and attracting a lot of foot traffic.” Vierra plans to build the 6,000-square-foot First Street building as a shell to house an unknown tenant in the space. It could be split into two units, he said. That project is slated to go before the Brentwood Planning Commission in November. If approved, the plan will then go to the Brentwood City Council for final

approval. Once that project wraps, Vierra said he plans to turn his attention to designing the restaurant across from Cap’s Oak Street Bar & Grill, which would involve demolishing the former gas station building. Vierra said it’s too early to speculate what type of restaurant could occupy that space, but he indicated that a brewhouse, similar to those that occupy downtown Livermore could be a nice fit. “It’s too soon to tell right

now,” he said of the Oak Street restaurant. “We want to see how First Street goes before we jump into that building.” Meanwhile, Deborah Spinola, owner of Beyond the Terrace, is gearing up for an Oct. 4 ribboncutting ceremony at her downtown shop. The store will offer an array of services, including staging, floral design and classes, along with sales of various products, such as designer evening and prom wear, gift items and home décor accessories. “It’s similar (to the old store), but we have upped it a little bit,” said Spinola, who has decorated The Streets of Brentwood for Christmas for many years.
