Delta group files lawsuit The Save the California Delta Alliance (STCDA) has filed a lawsuit against the state’s Department of Water Resources (DWR), claiming the agency has failed to provide a legally adequate and comprehensive environmental impact report (EIR) as it pertains to the controversial twin tunnels project. According to Michael Brodsky, attorney for the STCDA, the lawsuit goes beyond the standard claims usually made by project opponents in lawsuits under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). CEQA requires government agencies to disclose the environmental impacts of their projects and to adopt all feasible measures to lessen or eliminate said impacts. In the complaint, the STCDA alleges that the landmark 2009 Delta Reform Act requires DWR to reduce reliance on the Delta as a source of exported water and replace exported Delta water with new local and regional supplies. “Obviously, building gigantic twin tunnels that can suck up almost half the flow of the Sacramento River does nothing to reduce reliance on the Delta,” said Brodsky.

Volunteer boaters in East County are needed to help make Veterans Day on the Delta a big splash. Veterans Day on the Delta, Saturday, Sept. 9, is an annual event sponsored by Some Gave All – The Joey Graves Foundation, in which offshore racers take veterans for excursion rides throughout the Delta. Boat owners are encouraged to register as volunteers to give those who served the chance for fun on our local waterways. Kevin Graves, who found-

Kevin Graves, Some Gave All founder ed Some Gave All after his own son died in service, is spearheading the event and said the boat owners volunteer as an opportunity to give back. “It’s not cheap to run those boats for the day,” said Graves. “The boats burn a lot of fuel, but the owners want
to give back, because they feel they’ve been fortunate in life – largely because we have people in the military protecting their freedom.” Jerry Lampkin, a boater from last year’s event, said that was precisely why he volunteered.
“We had 30 boats and over a 100 vets that got to fish,” wrote Lampkin in a Facebook post. “I never served, but it was my honor to serve those that had.” The event started five years ago, after one boater had the chance to take a veteran on the water, giving him a thrill he hadn’t felt since jumping from an airplane during service. The idea to offer that kind of adrenaline rush to veterans bloomed. Some Gave All, a nonprofit charitable organization with a mission to honor the see Veterans page 34
