Grand jury Rico’s moment releases report on R fire district

A recently released Contra Costa County Grand Jury report concluded that the East Contra Costa Fire Protection District needs to open additional stations to provide adequate protection and recommends changes to tackle the district’s funding crisis.

The district recently dropped again to three stations with the closure of Knightsen Station 94 on July 1.

In order to have the Willow Lake Lighted Boat Parade in December, the previous organizer is asking for a volunteer or volunteers to step up and be the organizer of this wonderful annual event. Last year’s organizer is unavailable this season and is looking to pass the baton to a capable set of hands. She is willing to share what has been done previous years. A new support group for the blind

A new group in Brentwood is now offering community members living with low vision or blindness a place to find comfort, resources, friends and humor during dark times.

Twelve years ago, the founder, Valerie DePaola, was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) – an eye condition that begins with night-blindness, flashes and floaters and peripheral vision loss and eventually leads to complete or partial blindness.

“Normal people have 90 percent peripheral vision in each eye, giving them a total of 180 percent vision,” DePaola explained. “I have 10 percent peripheral vision, total. It’s like looking at everything through a paper towel roll.”

As someone with a degenerative eye disease, DePaola knows all too well the struggle that can come from living with vision loss, not only physically, but also emotionally. She had been part of an online support communities when she discovered another member of one such group, Kristina Funk, lived nearby. The two discussed the possibility of creating a local get-together where people like them could gather in person, be free to say exactly how they feel and find solidarity with others who were going through similar experiences.

Now, through the help of the Lions Club of Brentwood and Impact Christian Church, she’s put together a support group for people living with low vision or blindness.

“What I have noticed is that we tend to guard our feelings and what we’re going through, because we don’t want to upset our loved ones,” DePaola said. “But we know whatever is said at the group stays at the group, and people are free to say how they feel, cry, laugh or make jokes.”

diagnosis, she took the perceived misfortune as an opportunity to enhance her education and returned to school for her master’s degree in social work. As a psychologist, she focuses on progressive loss within illnesses that constantly require the need for adaptation, such as eye diseases or Alzheimer’s.

“It’s a different coping process when you lose something progressively, as op-

posed to all at once,” said Funk. “Just when you think you’ve adapted, your illness gets a little worse and you have to adapt again.”

Funk’s training and education have prepared her to respond to crises within the group, if needed, and she helps to set the ground rules for discussion, but she participates as a peer member, not a therapist.

“It’s a great place to be,” she said.

“But it’s also a great place to make friends, get support or resources.”

As a current member of the Lions Club of Brentwood, DePaola asked the Lions prior to launching the group three months ago if it would support the endeavor, to which the association agreed. It now provides snacks and beverages for meetings. And Impact Christian Church has generously donated the use of its building for the monthly meetings free of charge.

The meetings take place every second Tuesday of the month, at 161 Sand Creek Road, in Brentwood, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Anyone living with low vision or blindness over the age of 18 is welcome to attend.

“Anybody and everybody is welcome – whether you’re newly diagnosed or completely blind,” DePaola said, also noting the group does not have a religious affiliation. “For an hour and a half, you get to just be you and you don’t have to pretend.”

Victim’s family grateful for support “ I think it made it easier on them

A GoFundMe page created for the family of Antioch resident Mohammad Jawad Ataie, who was killed during a workplace robbery on July 3, has garnered nearly double the fundraising goal of $25,000.

In response to the community outpouring and support, the grateful family announced this week that they will be taking down the page.

“Oh my God, they were speechless,” said Shakeeb Rashidi, Ataie’s nephew. “I think it made it easier on them for their loss, to see so many people from the community help them and sympathize with them. It was not only financially, but also emotionally helpful. It was huge for them to feel like they still have some income at this time.”

On the evening of July 3, a suspect entered the Antioch Valero gas station where Ataie worked and pistol whipped and shot the husband and father of three, leaving loved ones and those who knew him devastated in the wake of such violence. The suspect, 42-year-old Zepp Crouchet, was later found dead in his car from the wounds incurred during the officer-involved shooting that followed the attack and robbery.

Ataie’s wife and children were not only left reeling in the aftermath, but also faced with the loss of their primary income and the financial burden of college tuition and funeral expenses. His close-knit extended family, which emigrated from Afghanistan in the 1980s and ’90s, banded together and set up a GoFundMe page in the hope of raising $25,000. The designated amount, said Rashidi, would help to offset funeral expenses and provide financial support for a few months while the family

But only a week had passed since creating the page on the Fourth of July when the total amount of funds contributed by the community reached more than $45,000.

Rashidi said the messages contributors wrote to the family on the GoFundMe page were also much appreciated, as many noted Ataie as the kind man he knew his uncle to be – one who always had a smile on his face and worked hard.

“I’m in disbelief, heartbroken and angry right now,” Mark Patison wrote on the page. “I will always remem-

ber and consider Mohammad as a friend. I’m going to truly miss our 20-minute conversations and that smile on his face every time I would walk into the gas station and say, ‘What’s up, boss?’ to him at least three to four times a week for the past four to five years. In the past two years, when I would go (into the gas station), he would always ask me, ‘How’s your momma doing?’ He was a very caring and loving man. We would always talk about our families, what was going on in both of our lives and how I was doing … This is so tragic to me. My heart goes out to his family, his friends and the people who were simply touched with the kindness and love his heart was full of for others.”

Rashidi said Ataie’s wife and children are doing the best they can at this time, while everyone works to figure out how to move forward and handle college for the two older children, who will return to their courses in August.

“We’re very grateful to our community here that everyone came together to help the family, financially and emotionally,” Rashidi said. “Everyone is so understanding; we’re grateful to be in this country.”

SHOULD WE CLEAN UP FOR THE APPRAISER?

Agency: Oakley Police Department Joshua Del Prado had two interests when he was growing up in Antioch – football and police work.

His interest in law enforcement was stoked by watching the television show “CHiPs” when he was young. As he got a little older, he played football for four years at Antioch High School and earned a scholarship to UC Berkeley. After two and a half years at Berkeley, he transferred to Idaho State and played football there while completing his degree in physical education.

When it became clear his path would not take him into professional football, Del Prado considered law enforcement.

In 2002, he returned to the East Bay and went to work for the Antioch Police Department. He then moved to the El Cerrito Police Department, and it was there Del Prado’s career underwent a major change when he was partnered with a police dog.

“It’s an amazing experience to work with the dog,” Del Prado said. “The bond is like no other in the profession. We’re more like a pack in the eyes of the dog, and he looks at you as the pack leader.

We’re with each other all the time.”

Del Prado’s current partner is Koda, a 5-year-old German shepherd. The pair worked together in El Cerrito and Koda joined Del Prado in Oakley when he was hired as the department’s first K-9 officer in January.

family when they are off duty, and he partakes in family activities.

“I have a large family,” Del Prado said. “I’ve got a lot of children. (We’re) typically doing family stuff, and Koda is part of that family. We’ll go on family walks. We’ll go down to the local parks. A lot of our time is outdoors.”

That large family includes seven children, ranging from a newborn to a 22 year old. His two oldest children have followed their father’s example of public service, and they are both serving in the military.

Del Prado speaks highly of his experiences with the City of Oakley and the police department.

“This city is a fantastic city,” he said.

“The administration here is fantastic. We have incredible support. This is a very unique department. This is definitely a good place to be.”

My answer to this question has changed over the years, I used to tell my clients, “Oh, don’t bother. The appraiser is just going to look at your square footage and your upgrades.” However, I give different advice now.

I just don’t like to take any chances, and usually, we only have one shot at the appraisal. Even though the appraiser is supposed to put most of the value on the location, square footage and upgrades, they can still consider the upkeep and maintenance of the property when calculating value. In addition, appraisers are still human. If they walk into a home with last night’s dinner plates on the table, dirty laundry on the floor and just a general mess throughout the rest of the home, it’s going to give them a certain impression about the home.

So now, I tell clients to prepare for an appraisal similar to how you would prepare for a potential showing. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but picked up and mostly clean would be great. Clean dishes

off the counter and wipe them down, pick up clothes and toys, stack up loose books and papers, open blinds to let light in and run a vacuum if you have time. Make sure the yard looks decent, too.

This environment will leave the appraiser with a nice feeling about the home, and in case your value winds up on the borderline, the extra effort you took to make it show well might just pay off to keep your deal together. While the hard ‘facts’ will mostly determine your appraised value, there is a little wiggle room in regards to condition and maintenance that is mostly a subjective assessment by the appraiser. It’s to your benefit to give them the most favorable impression of your home’s condition.

Are you over 55 and thinking of downsizing?

Prop 60 can help save you money

Many seniors come to my office and talk about wanting to downsize. Their children have moved out, and they are left with a big house they no longer want to spend the time or money caring for. However, downsizing can be hard for several reasons.

First, it can be really hard to leave your family home. With so many wonderful memories and bedrooms full of stuff, it can be emotionally draining to say goodbye and overwhelming to start sorting through boxes of old belongings.

Second, many couples fear that by buying a new and smaller place, their property taxes will possibly double or triple. I see couples every day who purchased their home 30 or more years ago and are still paying only a couple thousand a year in property taxes. Couples realize that if they buy a new, smaller place, their property taxes could increase drastically, which can be daunting while budgeting on a fixed income. But this is what I want to talk about today. Under Prop 60, if either you or your spouse is over the age of 55, you can keep your property-tax payment even when you move! But like all government propositions, there are certain criteria you must satisfy to qualify under Prop 60.

1. To qualify, you must sell your original home when you or your spouse is over 55.

2. After the sale of your home, you must purchase a new residence within two years.

3. Your old home must be in the same country as your new home.

4. The sale of your original home must qualify for reassessment as a result of the transfer or sale (i.e. you can’t transfer your home to your

children under Prop 13, so your children take your property-tax basis) 5. Your new home must be equal to or lesser in market value than your old home.

6. You can only take advantage of Prop 60 ONCE! Ok, now that we know the rules, let’s work with an example to help demonstrate the power of Prop 60. Let’s say you purchased your family home 30 years ago in Contra Costa County for $200,000, and your property taxes are currently $3,000 per year. You decide to sell your home and you sell it for $1 million. Under Prop 60, if either you or your spouse is over 55, you can purchase another home for $1,000,000 or less in Contra Costa County and keep your property tax payments at $3,000 per year!

In California, we passed Prop 60 to encourage people to downsize, as they get older.

Make sure you understand the rules before selling so you can take advantage of Prop 60.

way to fitness. I love it, and Grandpa is happy I found something that I actually like to do for physical fitness.

With my Medicare supplemental insurance, I can even use the pool at a few fitness centers around town during the winter for free.

Most places that offer water aerobics have a very minimal charge. It’s usually about $5 a session, and if you look online, you can see the closest pool and classes. If you have your own pool or access to one, but no classes, you can view videos online with complete instructions on several routines.

Aqua jogging is the perfect aerobic, low-impact exercise that gets the heart pumping and blood flowing throughout the body. The water creates a gentle resistance without wreaking havoc on knee joints.

Some people like to wear water shoes to prevent slipping and put a soft buffer between their feet and the cement pool bottom. After the initial warm up, we do a variety of exercises that include the use of a noodle and water weights. You’d be surprised how much resistance you feel when pushing those lightweight pieces of foam under water. I am seeing some nice results in just three classes.

Flutter kicking is another great lowimpact cardio exercise in the water, and with a noodle behind the back, chances of sinking are nil. Leg lifts, standing water pushups, lunges and arm curls are all much easier and certainly more entertaining in the pool than on land.

I hate to exercise.

I admit it. There is nothing at all appealing to me about all that jumping around and sweating in clothes that are so clingy they show every bulge, ripple and crease as you move. Kudos to the people who get up every Senior morning and go to orner the gym, only to torture themselves on equipment apparently designed by the Marquis de Sade.

Walking on a treadmill in the privacy of my own home is a little better, but it’s Marla downright boring! At Luckhardt my age, I needed to find an activity that is easy on my back and knees, effective in helping to stay in shape, accessible and most of all fun.

After a conversation with my doctor, her suggestion of exercising in water made a lot of sense. The low impact buoyancy on my joints was a perfect solution. So the following week on vacation I started walking laps in the giant hotel pool and decided I would continue doing it when I returned home. Quite by accident, I stumbled onto a water aerobics class about to begin at Summerset.

They said the first class was free, and I replied, “I’m in!”

A group of women and men was gathered in the pool and about to dance to music led by a very enthusiastic instructor.

Nobody cared what I looked like in my tasteful one-piece swimsuit, and when it got to the part where we kicked and splashed, I felt like a kid again. We laughed and enjoyed the water as we frolicked our

nyone who has ever readied a student for school is well aware the preparation

can be stressful.

The cost of school supplies, backpacks, new clothes and other necessities can be overwhelming. To help lessen the burden for parents in need, a few local groups with big hearts reach out, year after year, to help students start the new school year off on the right foot.

“When families in need are already struggling, the added stress of ensuring their child has what is needed can absolutely cause additional stress,” said Karen Ludwig, co-president of the Mothers of Brentwood.

This year, the Mothers of Brentwood’s efforts to help those in need began on April 30, during its 12th-annual Mother’s Day Brunch at Club Los Meganos, at Trilogy at the Vineyards, where the women not only celebrated the holiday, but also raised money to support the group’s community outreach programs. The group raised over $6,000 this year to support the back-to-school backpack drive, Thanksgiving meals and adopt-a-family holiday program.

“Being moms, we are all busy, but when 70 plus ladies can take the time to come and support other families in the community, it is truly amazing,” said Molly Cotton, community outreach

for the Mothers of Brentwood. “Being able to be part of an organization that supports one another, as well as gives back locally to the community, is a wonderful feeling.”

The group filled 144 backpacks with binders, notebooks, folders, rulers, glue sticks, erasers, pencils, pencil sharpeners, scissors, markers, colored pencils, crayons and pencil pouches. The backpacks will be dropped off at the Brentwood Union School District, which will divide them amongst local schools.

Parents in need can call their home school to request one or the district office for more information.

“The Mothers of Brentwood has provided so many backpacks filled with school supplies each and every year,” said Dana Eaton, Brentwood Union School District superintendent. “They are amazing.”

Another local group making sure kids are ready for the upcoming school year is the Rotary Club of Brentwood.

Each year, the club partners with the Village Community Resource Center (VCRC) in Brentwood to assist underserved students with backpacks and school clothes.

On July 22, the group will take 25 children on a Kohl’s shopping spree with funds provided by the Rotary. Kohl’s provides a special discount on the clothing and allows the group to come into see School page 15

“This is one of our favorite activities we do each year,” said Fran Bowman, Rotary Club of Brentwood president. “It is so fulfilling to see the kids’ faces when they pick out a pair of shoes, a shirt or something they love. They grin from ear to ear.”

According to Brentwood Rotarian Dirk Zeigler, at the end of the shopping spree, each student is given a backpack filled with school supplies.

“School needs to be a priority,” said Zeigler. “Students should not have to be worred about supplies when they attend.

We need to set these kids up to succeed from the start.”

Local organizations are not the only resource for help. The Liberty Union High School District (LUHSD) also provides a limited number of backpacks filled with school supplies to high schools, which are distributed to students in need.

The LUHSD also provides Tri Delta bus passes to low-income students in need of assistance with transportation. Students can contact their home school guidance counselor, principal or assistant principal to request a backpack or bus pass.

“Our job is to educate students,” said Dr. Tony Shah, LUHSD assistant superintendent of student services.

“We’re going to help students overcome any barriers they may have to learning and will do what we need to do to help students with any financial or emotional hardship.”

With the upcoming school year just around the corner, the LUHSD and other local organizations are hoping that families and students in need will reach out for available help, so every student is prepared for success when the school year begins.

“Do not hesitate to contact the school and ask what items are absolutely necessary, and also do not hesitate to ask for assistance,” said Hetrick. “Working together, we do make a difference, and we will make every effort to support all students and families.”

Acne is a Disease Covered by Insurance

by Dr. Robert E. Beer, MD Acne at any age can be unsettling, but to teens under intense peer pressure to fit in and look good, teenage acne can be devastating.

Recent advances in dermatological science give new hope for acne treatments - even the most severe cases. Fortunately, the dermatological profession considers acne a medical condition whose treatment is covered by all major insurers.

Most teens get acne, but why some more severe than others? A number of factors come into play: the shape and size of the pore, genetics or family history, amount of washing or overwashing, stress, diet, hair type and hormonal activity. What schools are doing about childhood obesity The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that childhood obesity rates have more than doubled in children and quadrupled in adolescents in the last 30 years.

This is happening in spite of indications that childhood obesity could reduce life expectancy by five years or more. Many children are not participating in free-time physical activity and,

according to Blank Children’s Hospital, only 25 percent of children in the U.S. eat a healthy diet.

The schools are taking on the challenge to make a change by discussing obesity in health

and physical education classes, modifying school lunch offerings, extending lunch hours, and teaching children how to prepare healthy foods.

Childhood obesity may be an epidemic, but schools are in the position to curb it in young students.

Library hours extended

T

he doors of the Antioch Library are now open an additional seven hours a week.

The expansion bumps the total hours open to 35, thanks to an increase in funding from the City of Antioch. The changes include the addition of Monday open hours. Currently, only one other library in East County is open on Mondays.

“Libraries are not a luxury; they are a necessity,” said Supervisor Federal Glover. “The knowledge they contain and dispense is critical for our residents’

growth and the vitality of our communities. I applaud the City of Antioch for supplementing the basic library functions provided by the county.”

This change will allow for additional programming in the library, including more story times, after-school activities and an additional day of free lunches during the summer – the Lunch in the Library program. Project Second Chance, the adult literacy program, will also gain additional open hours, and library staff will be able to do more outreach in the schools and with local organizations.

The Brentwood Library is in need of volunteers willing to tutor children in math, English, history and science from August through May 2018.

Volunteers will tutor students from kindergarten to 12th grade after school and must be strong in academics, willing to work with kids and dependable. Shifts are on Tuesdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. Volunteers 18 and over will need to be fingerprinted.

Road work underway Contra Costa County Public Works Department is performing work on Marsh Creek Road from Deer Valley Road to the Clayton city limits, which started July 10 and will continue through July 20.

The work will occur Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m., to shape slopes and shoulders along the road edge where mudslides occurred during the winter storms. The work may be rescheduled

based on weather conditions. Electronic message boards will alert drivers of the scheduled work.

There will be traffic control through the work area, and drivers can expect delays of 10 to 15 minutes.

Gov. Jerry Brown recently signed AB 341 by Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D-Discovery Bay), which gives local school districts the authority to use funds at their discretion for student participation in field trips or excursions to other states, the District of Columbia or a foreign country.

“School districts have been explicitly prohibited from using funds to help students participate in field trips or educational excursions out of state,” Frazier said. “AB 341 changes this, allowing schools to use district funds to enhance educational opportunities by increasing access to student resources and improving

the outcomes that students experience.”

The idea for AB 341 came locally from the Fairfield-Suisun School District, which is in the 11th Assembly District. In the spring of 2016, Armijo High School and Grange Middle School VEX robotics teams qualified to participate in the world competition in Kentucky. The students on these teams needed financial assistance to attend the competition. AB 341 will eliminate the need for a waiver, allowing school districts to use

their own discretion on whether to use district funds for travel that enhances student educational experiences.

“This common-sense legislation grants local school districts the authority to use funds to help students whose families may not have the financial means to pay for these types of opportunities,” Frazier said. “I thank Fairfield-Suisun School District for bringing the need for this legislation to my attention and for the district’s strong support of AB 341 during the legislative process.”

Bearl D. Casey

June 13, 1927 – June 29, 2017 Bearl Casey passed away on Friday, June 29, in his home, surrounded by his loving family.

A family graveside service and burial was held Thursday.

Bearl was born in Haskell, Texas, to John and Carrie Casey, and came to California at the age of 9, where he attended Brentwood Elementary and Liberty High schools. He married Billie Dedman in 1948, and they enjoyed 69 years of marriage, raising two children – Mary (Jerry Black) and John (Jody).

For Bearl and Billie, their family always came first and they were blessed with five grandchildren, Aaron, Alyssa, Brian, Loren and Megan; and five great-grandchildren, Aidric, Andrew, Roland, Colin and Chloe. Their sixth great-grandchild is due to arrive in October and will be named Bearl Casey in his honor.

Bearl had a passion for cars ever since he got his driver’s license at age 14, when he became the driver for his family upon the death of his father. From working at his father’s gas station, he grew up around cars and worked for more than 45 years in the automotive field. He was always respected and trusted by the many people who brought their cars to him. He could fix anything that went wrong with a car engine and was fondly called ‘Mr. Goodwrench’ by the many friends with whom he and Billie traveled in their motor home.

He could always be counted on to help not only his friends, but also anyone else who needed assistance on the road.

In addition to his love of cars, Bearl loved boating and built his own ski boat in the garage of the home he and Billie bought in 1956. This love of boating led to many years of camping and water skiing at Don

Pedro Lake and on the rivers of the Delta.

He was the patient, never-tiring driver, who pulled water-skiers from sunup to sundown, always finding happiness in someone else enjoying themselves on the water.

Bearl and Billie found a love for travel in their motor home. They traveled countless miles throughout 49 states and into Canada and Mexico, enjoying time with friends and family, many times arranging to connect with distant family members on their travels.

Winter months were spent in San Felipe and then Yuma, where good times were shared, life was celebrated and cocktail hour always started at 4 p.m.

Bearl lived life to the fullest every day and created many memories with all who knew him. He was a humble and quiet man, who worked hard all of his life, was never without a project to work on and who made everyone around him feel loved and appreciated. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

A celebration of Bearl’s life will be held Saturday, July 15, at 1 p.m., at the clubhouse of Summerset IV. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a favorite charity.

Not quite a relaxing vacation I can count on one hand how many good vacations our family has had.

Maybe I have unrealistic expectations. Maybe the ominous vacation gods have just decided to be stingy toward our family. Whatever the reason, our most rent Hangin’ in trip to Santa Barbara is going down as one here of the worst.

We try to plan good vacations. We stay at well-known hotels, many of which Maury has stayed at for business, but he is a simple Vicki man and will often McKenna comment that all he requires is a clean bed. Sadly, on this trip, he didn’t even get a bed, but I am getting ahead of myself.

We are a shrinking family of four, now that our three older kids are out on their own. We do not spend a lot of time together in close quarters and enjoy our own bedrooms and bathrooms. We like our personal space. In addition, some of us have a touch of germaphobia, especially Ryan, so if there is a sick person in the house, he stays as far away from them as possible and washes his hands a lot.

We were loading up the car when Maury mentioned he didn’t feel well, like

he might be coming down with a cold.

He coughed a couple of times, and it didn’t sound good. The fact that we were now going to be trapped in a car together for six hours with Maury quickly becoming ill was not a great scenario for Ryan, which is probably why he offered me the front seat.

The trip was long and boring. Ryan and Haley never said a word. They were plugged into their phones, and we barely knew they were in the car. Meanwhile, Maury was dealing with a sore throat and a deep cough, so he wasn’t talking much.

He doesn’t have a CD player or satellite radio in his car, so our musical choices were static and more static as we drove through terrain that looked like Mars.

I thought to myself, “This is what hell must be like.”

The kids finally spoke. They were hungry. We were in Pismo Beach when we spotted a place called McClintock’s Steak House. Maury’s father had taken him there once as a child. He told us the waiters can fill a water glass from 4 feet above the table!

We could tell he wanted to visit this restaurant that held warm memories of his dad. Haley, our resident vegetarian was concerned there would be nothing on the menu for her, since it was a steakhouse. Let me add that Haley’s motivation for becoming vegetarian is based solely on her strong opposition

to the cruelty of animals, in particular, hunting.

We entered the restaurant. It was a huge, rustic, cabin-like place, with a nice view of the ocean and the head of a dead animal adorning every wall. An enormous stuffed buffalo stared at us from the center of the room.

“Great,” Haley said under her breath.

She had onion rings for dinner. On the upside, the waiter did fill our water glasses from 4 feet above the table, which was pretty cool.

When we arrived at our hotel, the valet promptly dropped my pillow into the dirty gutter. We followed him to our room, which was small, but clean. There were two queen beds, and there was supposed to be a roll-away as well.

Ryan declared he would be occupying a queen bed. Alone.

I called room service for the rollaway bed, but was told their fire code wouldn’t allow it. Nobody wanted to sleep with Maury, who had obviously contracted some sort of deadly virus, so Haley and I decided to share the other queen bed.

Maury was banished to a 4-foot upholstered bench. Maury is 6’3.

Our bathroom did not have a door.

Instead, there was a sliding piece of glass that offered no lock, no privacy and no soundproofing. There was no

fan. In short, every disgusting noise that normally occurs in a bathroom was audible to all.

The first night was terrible. The room felt even smaller as we heard Maury getting sicker by the hour, causing him to snore and cough throughout the night. He could barely move on the narrow bench. I’m pretty sure he was thinking, “This is what hell must be like.”

We all were.

The next morning, I reached for the shower handle, and it came off in my hand.

I had to call the janitor to come up and fix it. Maury was down in the lobby buying cough drops. By that evening, we were Googling urgent-care facilities for him.

Our son’s graduation was the next day.

Ryan refused to spend any time at all in the contaminated room. He spent most of his time playing corn hole in the courtyard of the hotel and FaceTiming his girlfriend out on the balcony until 2 a.m.

After an early morning visit to the doctor, Maury was armed with three different medications, and he made it through the graduation, the only high point of our ill-fated trip. Our last night was the best night, only because we all knew we were going home the next day.

At last, we were home! As we turned up our street, my house was a sight for sore eyes and a sore throat … which of course, I got.

Antioch basketball player to play for Great Britain squad

Eric Donaldson, the 6-foot-3 forward who just completed his sophomore season at Antioch High School, earned a tremendous honor this summer.

He was selected to play basketball for Great Britain’s under-16 (U16) team at the European Championships.

The FIBA European Championships will take place in Bulgaria from Aug. 10 to 19.

“It’s an honor to play for my country and represent it,” Donaldson said. “Not only am I representing my country, but Antioch and my hometown of Coventry.

To be selected for the first ever U16 Great Britain team is a blessing, and I’m very thankful to play on such a big stage.”

Competing for the United Kingdom, where he was born, is in Donald-

son’s blood. As a player and a coach, his father represented England 28 times in international competitions.

Donaldson also noted that playing in Europe will give him a strong look at a different kind of basketball than what he’s played in the U.S. “This experience will help me as a player, because the game play and game style is different,” Donaldson added.

“Basketball in Europe is a lot more physical, and I feel the referees give you more freedom to just play the game. It is also a great level to compete at, and I’ll be playing against some of the best players in Europe. Lastly, getting familiar with a shorter shot clock will also help me as I one day want to play in college and at a professional level.”

Someone else who’s excited for Donaldson is Drew Riva, his coach at Antioch.

“Eric has brought a great work ethic to Antioch High School boys’ basketball,” Riva said. “His attitude and the way he approaches school and sports is a great example of how his family have done an outstanding job in raising Eric.

Antioch High is lucky to get to be a part of his journey.”

Playing in an international tournament also figures to be beneficial for Donaldson off of the court. That fact is not lost on Donaldson, who’s well aware of how fortunate he is to have this experience at such a young age.

“It will help me because it’s all new experiences,” he said. “Seeing different parts of the world and interacting with different cultures will be beneficial. Also, meeting other guys my age who love the sport is a nice bonus. It’s always good to make new connections. Not many people have that opportunity at age 16.”

Former Heritage A stellar achievement High pitcher earns first MLB victory Former Heritage High School pitcher, Paul Blackburn, secured his first major league win in his second start for the Oakland A’s last week.

Blackburn, who made his major league debut on July 1, was stellar on the mound for the second consecutive time, surrendering only one run on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings in the A’s 7-4 win over the Seattle Mariners at Seattle’s Safeco Field on July 6.

“I was a little more nervous for this start,” Blackburn said on NBC Sports California. “Coming in, I was just trying to keep that attack mindset the whole time.

Bruce (Maxwell) and I had a great plan, and we followed it and executed well.”

The 2012 Heritage graduate was drafted by the Chicago Cubs out of high school, before being traded to the Seattle Mariners in 2016 and to the A’s later that year. He had played for seven teams in various levels of the minor leagues before breaking into the big leagues.

“Honestly I don’t think it even hit me (the first start),” he said. “Going out there still kind of felt like a dream and everything. This one, I was a lot more nervous; a lot more antsy.”

Blackburn is slated to make his next start for the A’s on July 15 at home against the Cleveland Indians.

The case for urethane If you’ve been watching the pro events for the past couple of years, a few elite players have made the use of solid urethane bowling Keglers balls popular.

Urethane picked up a slight amount of dressing (oil) from the lane and helped ‘burn’ a track into the pattern.

Urethane was popular for a couple of years, until the advent of the reactive resin cover stock, which changed the game of bowling in a dynamic way.

Urethane went the way of the wind, as the hook potential of the reactive coverstocks and exotic cores was off the charts.

Modern lane-dressing machines are simply giant-scale jet printers that disperse any one of hundreds of stock and exotic patterns of oil onto the lane.

These patterns are the basis and nemesis of today’s tournament player. They ushered in the advent of the personal arsenal of equipment to manage lane conditions, and their breakdown during extended format play.

It’s not unusual to see players come to a tournament with six to nine balls drilled with different reaction profiles and varying surface characteristics to attack these patterns.

Two years ago, a young man from Sweden by the name of Jesper Svensen made his debut on the PBA Tour as a left-handed, two-handed player, and to top that off, he used urethane.

His approach to the game was to take the pattern out of play by using a low friction coverstock and shooting a straight-up-the-boards line to the

pocket. He didn’t care where the oil was or wasn’t. He just threw it straight and was dominating the exotic patterns.

In the beginning, the blogs and conversation practically accused Svensen of cheating. In actuality, it was just good strategy, and in time, other players would come onboard, like Jason Belmonte, who was a dominant, righthanded, two-handed player on the tour.

So how does all this relate to you and your game on the typical house shot and league play? In short, it doesn’t.

If you bowl week to week on the same house pattern for a three-game set, there’s no circumstance to use urethane.

The first criteria for using urethane is that you must be a high-rev player, and by that, I mean above 400 minimum. Anything below that and something else in your bag will address your condition.

Urethane is a special tool for a special condition that seldom occurs,

much like the golfer who has the skill to recognize the need for a five or six wood or a high- or low-angle wedge.

For the average player – and even the intermediate to par player – a milder coverstock with a weaker layout is the best answer and solution to a dry or difficult condition, especially if your rev rate is not on the high side. Even those players are rare.

I’m a 220 average player. I had one drilled, used it for one game and gave it away to a junior who wanted to try it. I think he gave it away, too.

Urethane is an answer for the elite PBA Tour players and Regional PBA players to deal with exotic and extreme conditions, not for the vast majority of weekly players.

As always, seek out a certified U.S. Bowling Congress coach or qualified pro shop operator for advice on selecting proper equipment for your game.

A separate camp on July 29, from 8:45 a.m. to noon, will be available for ninth- through 12th-graders and will focus on pass, set and attack game components for setters, middles and outside and opposite hitters.

When going to the dentist, most customers wouldn’t think their money would go back to charity.

However, for the past few months at Miller and Simarro Dental Care in Antioch, both clientele and employees worked together to raise over $3,500 for children in need. Partnering with the nationwide Smiles for Life campaign for the first time, Miller and Simarro Dental Care staff wanted to help children with severe disabilities and illnesses through promoting donations at the office.

Running since 1998, the Smiles for Life Foundation partners with participating dentists around the country to benefit children in the U.S. and on a global scale.

The dental office worked with their clientele during the months of March through June to raise money via cash donations and with a low-cost, teeth-whitening special that gave 100 percent of the proceeds to the charity.

“I was really pleasantly surprised to see people reaching into their wallets and putting cash into the donation jar we had set up at the front of the office,” said Sue Shanks, office manager at Miller and Simarro Dental Care. “They all loved to get involved with it.”

The Miller and Simarro Dental Care staff recently held a drive to raise funds for the Smiles for Life Foundation, which benefits children in need.

Care employees also enjoyed being a part of Smiles for Life and helping out in the area.

“We wanted to be more involved with the community, and Smiles for Life was a good opportunity to help our local charities,” said Shanks.

Half of the money raised at Miller and Simarro Dental Care was given to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, and the remaining money was given back to the Smiles for Life Foundation. This campaign benefitted the children who received the donations, and it was also an enjoyable experience for the staff and customers.

“Being a part of this campaign has

been great, and we’ve had a lot of fun doing it,” said Shanks. “Our patients also loved being a part of this, because they knew that 100 percent of their donation was going toward something great.”

Due to the success of this campaign, Miller and Simarro Dental Care plans to participate in the Smiles for Life campaign again next year. After raising thousands of dollars in the first year, the group hopes to double its earnings for the next year to give back even more to the community.

TAX FREE VACATION OR SECOND HOME RENTAL Tax rules on rental income from second homes can be complicated, particularly if you rent the home out for several months of the year, but also use the home yourself.

However, there is one provision that is not complicated. Homeowners who rent out their property for 14 or fewer days a year can pocket the rental income, tax-free.

Known as the ‘Master’s exemption,’ it is used by homeowners near the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, who rent out their homes during the Master’s Tournament (for as much as $20,000!). It is also used by homeowners who rent out their homes for movie productions or those whose residences are located near Super Bowl sites or national political conventions.

If you live close to a vacation destination, such as the beach or mountains, you may be able to make some extra cash by renting

out your home (principal residence) when you go on vacation – as long as it’s two weeks or less. And, although you can’t take depreciation or deduct for maintenance, you can deduct mortgage interest, property taxes and casualty losses on Schedule A (1040), Itemized Deductions.

In general, income from rental of a vacation home for 15 days or longer must be reported on your tax return on Schedule E, Supplemental Income and Loss. Your rental income may also be subject to the net investment income tax. You should also keep in mind that the definition of a ‘vacation home’ is not limited to a house.

County homeless population shifting Contra Costa’s annual survey to document people experiencing homelessness showed a 7 percent drop overall in 2017 compared to last year, but there was a substantial rise in Central County, according to a report released by Contra Costa Health Services’ Division of Health, Housing and Homeless Services (H3).

Growing up on Long Island, I was surrounded by water. We lived close to the beach, and in the summer it took all of Mom’s patience and strength to get me out of the water at the end of the day. If it was not a beach day due to rain, I was an emotional basket case. I could swim for countless hours, only coming out for food and the call of nature.

One killed in Byron Highway collision A head-on collision on Byron Highway at North Bruns Road on July 11 resulted in one fatality, according to the Contra Costa California Highway Patrol (CHP).

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. and backed up traffic in both directions on Byron Highway for approximately two hours.

The initial investigation with a witness suggests a blue Honda Civic was traveling westbound on Byron Highway and a gold Mazda minivan was traveling eastbound. Both vehicles were traveling at approximately 50 mph. As the two vehicles approached each other, for unknown

reasons the male driver of the blue Honda Civic veered across the solid double yellow lines and into the opposite lane of traffic, directly in front of the Mazda minivan. The two vehicles collided headon. The driver of the Honda died, while the male driver of the Mazda minivan suffered moderate injuries and was airlifted to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

The investigation remains ongoing and it is unclear at this time whether alcohol or drugs were involved. Anyone with information is urged to contact Officer Gallego at the Contra Costa CHP, 925646-4980.

Committee extends deadline The Contra Costa County Aviation Advisory Committee (AAC) is extending the application deadline for an open, atlarge position.

The term begins upon appointment by the board of supervisors and expires on February 29, 2020. Contra Costa residents are eligible to fill this position to represent all county stakeholders in matters related to Buchanan Field and Byron Airports.

trict’s property-tax allocation – 7 percent of the 1 percent ad valorem property tax – is the lowest of all county fire agencies, the study found. Those funds account for about 95 percent of the district’s revenue. “(The district) receives a low proportionate share of the property taxes, because tax allocations were locked in when Proposition 13 was approved in 1978,” the report concluded. “Its predecessor fire districts had less financial need because they used volunteer firefighters and served fewer people.”

To make matters worse, residents shot down the district’s attempts to pass a revenue-generating parcel tax in 2012, a benefit assessment in 2015 and an effort by the cities of Brentwood and Oakley to get utility-users taxes approved in 2016.

Assemblymember Jim Frazier recently introduced two assembly bills – AB898 and 899 – earlier this year, calling for the annual reallocation of $10.5 million from the East Bay Regional Park District to the fire district. AB 899 is a safeguard bill, which would allow for a public election should AB 898 not pass.

“We can no longer accept a situation that puts lives and properties at risk and raises homeowners’ insurance rates,” he said.

The report also made numerous suggestions for both the district board and jurisdictions it serves to address the funding crisis.

It advised the district board to seek funding through ballot measures, undertake market research to better understand how to sway voters to approve ballot measures, create a district-wide task

force to research funding opportunities and make recommendations to the fire board and negotiate with local agencies to voluntarily transfer a portion of their property tax to the fire district.

The report called for the Brentwood and Oakley city councils and Contra Costa Board of Supervisors to consider adopting policies to collect impact fees from all developers of residential and commercial properties to fund capital improvements needed to open future stations and consider adopting a policy to enter agreements with all developers to establish Community Facility Districts (CFD) to provide operating revenue for the district.

There are only two CFDs within the ECCFPD coverage area that provide funds to the district, which are slated to total $280,000 in fiscal year 2017-2018, according to district budget documents.

Oakley City Councilmember Kevin Romick questioned whether the funding recommendations would adequately address the funding crisis.

“If we were to reach the goal of nine stations throughout the district, that would be around $18 million a year,” he said. “Assuming we assess a CFD in Oakley to all future development that’s similar to the current one in place at Summer Lakes – around $26 – and assuming we maintain the current rate of building an average of 150 new homes a year, the revenue collected would be about $40,000 a year. That still leaves us with a huge funding gap.”
