A homecoming for Harvey by Tony Kukulich Staff Writer
For Harvey Yurkovich, his new role as superintendent of the Knightsen Elementary School District is a homecoming. “I was raised on Knightsen Avenue, right up the street,” said Yurkovich. “I went to Knightsen School for first through eighth grade ... It’s going to be nice to get back home – back to my roots – and re-establish those connections.” The Knightsen Elementary School Board of Trustees unanimously approved Yurkovich’s appointment to a dual role in the district on April 25. In addition to being the superintendent of the district’s two schools – Knightsen Elementary and Old River Elementary – he will also serve as principal of Knightsen Elementary. Yurkovich is the

We are excited to have Harvey as our new superintendent/principal and look forward to working with him to inspire our students, lead our staff and serve the residents of the Knightsen Elementary School District.” Integrating technology with education will be a primary objective for Yurkovich as he settles into his new role. “I want to look at the infrastructure. I want to look at where we are as far as getting technology in student hands,” he said. “I also want to look at the balance between the two schools, because Knightsen, for a long time, has been a oneschool district. The commission officially denied the design in April mainly over concerns that increased traffic would have a negative effect on surrounding neighborhoods. The appeal will be considered by the Brentwood City Council during a future meeting. “We were surprised and

we are. We went through everything the commission has asked us for.” Project plans called for Goodwill to build a 25,000-square-foot building that incorporates a retail store, a donation processing

The proposed store is for retail use, which is permitted in the area, but the commission is concerned about traffic flow to and from the location. “I don’t see it working harmoniously in the neighborhood,” said Planning Commission Chairperson John Fink, who likened the project to trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
