to Park and rec projects underway Guide green living by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer
The calendar says spring is just around the corner, but if you ask Discovery Bay Parks and Landscape Manager Fairin Perez, the season has already sprung. “We’re cleaning things up and making them look pretty,” said Perez. “We’ve got a lot going on.” And while there’s plenty of pruning, trimming and planting in the works, there are just as many recreation-related projects underway – a task that also falls under Perez’s professional purview. “Fairin is definitely up to her elbows in projects all over town,” said General Manager Rick Howard. “Partly because the growth to the town has come so quickly that we are trying to accommodate the needs of the community, and also because we are still figuring out the best way to handle the recreation-management end of things. Students, parents and local officials gathered at La Paloma High School Saturday to take part in Innocence of a Child, a workshop focused on sexual exploitation awareness and prevention for girls 1118. The event was sponsored by the Contra Costa Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. “The Innocence of a Child workshop addresses one of the greatest issues facing our community,” said Darrylyn Swift, president of the Contra Costa Alumnae Chapter. “It was important for us to bring the youth, teens, caregivers and
community leaders together to open up lines of communication and talk about the prevalence of sexual exploitation in our community, and identify risk factors and warning signs. The workshop also provided the youth and teens an opportunity to be self-reflective and focus not only on victimization and their vulnerability, but on their strength. “It is also important for us as a chapter to send a clear message that our children are our most precious resources and we are committed to pro-
