Bryon Gutow takes on new role at CSD by Dawnmarie Fehr Correspondent
Bryon Gutow’s face is a familiar sight on real estate signs around town, and now it can also be seen at the town’s Community Services District (CSD) board meetings. A Discovery Bay resident since 2004, Gutow was elected to the board in November and looks forward to bringing a fresh outlook to Discovery Bay’s leadership. “As a real estate agent who not only lives in Discovery Bay but who also makes a living here, I have a different perspective on what’s going on out here,” Gutow said. “I want to make sure we take care of the town and raise property values. Everyone on the board is very intelligent and doing a great job, and I can’t wait to contribute to that.” Gutow was originally drawn to Discovery Bay by the quality of life he encountered on weekend visits. When he found himself transitioning out of the high-tech industry, he decided to take the plunge and move to the Delta permanently. He hasn’t looked back since.
“The standard of living brought me out here,” he said. “I decided to (go into real estate), and it’s been going great. Discovery Bay is a great place to live and a great place to sell properties.” As an active member of the Discovery Bay Lions Club, Gutow is already familiar with many faces and needs in the town. He led the partnership between the Lions Club and the community center to organize the Summer Jam Concert Series for the past two summers. These events have been successful in raising $15,000 for the community center, which has gone toward improvements the whole town can enjoy. Gutow took over former director Chris Steele’s seat. Steele, who had been on the board since 2010, chose not to run for re-election this year in order to spend more time with his family and growing business. He feels confident that he is leaving his seat in good hands. “Bryon is very knowledgeable on the challenges that the district faces,” Steele said. “He will be a great advocate for the water and wastewater departments as well as for the

After issuing an advisory warning East County boaters about a spike in boat thefts, Lt. David Cook of the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff Marine Services Unit told The Press this week that five arrests have been made in the case. “Our investigation is ongoing,” said Cook. “We are working closely with our investigators and other agencies and five total arrests have been made so far. We’re not identifying any of the suspects involved right now because of the fact that the investigation is ongoing and we still have some outstanding arrest warrants. that are easily removed and transported. The boats are then abandoned, grounded or dumped. In some cases, they are set on fire. What happens to the parts after they are stolen is not yet clear. “I don’t have any evidence that they’re being transported out of the area, but that’s not a bad guess, either,” said Cook. Cook hopes to see boat owners take a more proactive role protecting their property and offered a number of security precautions. “If you’re a boat owner it helps if you can secure your boat to a fixed object, use trailer-hitch locks, use motion-detecting cameras and motion-detecting lights,” see Delta page 22A
