Rash of holiday fires strain local resources by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer

A series of fires over the Fourth of July weekend left Costa Fire Protection District (ECCFPD) crews severely strained and residents from Oakley to Discovery Bay without coverage for periods of time. Two separate fires burned 13 acres of grass and light brush along Vasco Road, approximately one half mile north of the county line, on Saturday morning, July 3, closing traffic in both directions for

hours. Responding companies included Calfire and Alameda County. According to ECCFPD Battalion Chief Brian Helmick, the cause of the fire remains under investigation, and no injuries were reported. That evening, a suspected fireworks-induced fire caused approximately $100,000 worth of damage to Town and Country Roofing Inc., on Elkins Way, in Brentwood. The blaze began with a four-acre vegetation fire on both sides of Marsh Creek see Fires page 22A

Local children frolic at the Ravenswood Splash Pad, in Discovery Bay, to cool off on a hot summer afternoon. The splash pad has been reopened thanks to a wet winter and the state’s recently relaxed water restrictions.

This summer, Discovery Bay residents looking to cool off need look no further than their own hometown. With a large pool and indoor activities at the community center, a full line up of outdoor movies and a splash pad that has reopened thanks to the wet winter, there is always someplace to beat the heat and have fun. Town staff members Monica Rollins and Mac Kaiser spent the spring months putting together a fun recreational schedule to keep kids and adults alike entertained. “The pool is open and heated to 82 degrees,” Rollins said. “It feels great, and we’ve had a lot of families coming to enjoy the pool. Also, at the community center, there is a group that plays cards on Wednesdays. They can sit inside the air conditioning, escape the hot sun and laugh. They play a game called Hand and Foot, and they sound like they have a lot of fun.” Cards aren’t the only things being played see Heat page 22A
