Rain doesn’t ruin county fair experience

Sprinkles and showers didn’t dampen the mood at the Contra Costa County Fair, as thousands of people stopped by the Antioch fairgrounds during the four-day event to experience a brand of fun that only this part of

the Bay Area can offer.

Rays of sunshine managed to pierce dark gray clouds that loomed over the fairgrounds last weekend, and for Antioch resident Tamara Threadgill, wet weather wasn’t about to stop her. “I come to the fair every year, so rain or shine, I have to come,� Threadgill said. “This is the best event at the fairgrounds

Her granddaughter Serena Hill, also of Antioch, didn’t want to get up close and personal to the snake, but she thought it was cool that her grandma was so brave.

Serena enjoyed the animal shows and got to ride a pony in the carnival area.

There were plenty of activities for

all year. There are rides, games, great food, shows and all these fun activities. I wouldn’t miss it.�

Threadgill’s favorite part of the fair is the animal exhibits, and this year she got an experience she’ll never forget as she posed for a photo with a boa constrictor wrapped around her shoulders and arms.

4-H cultivates fashion Ashley Lucas, 17, of Discovery Bay, right, and Madison Lewis, 12, of Oakley, inset, were recently named county winners at the Contra Costa County 4-H Fashion Revue. Ashley won for her handmade baby blue gown, and Madison was honored for her fairy design, which she sewed onto a jean jacket.

Both moved onto the recent state championship held at UC Davis, where Ashley received a medal and Madison won a blue ribbon. As a medal winner, Ashley was in the running for the top honor in her division, Senior Traditional Fashion.

Her medal will be pinned to her 4-H hat, on which 4-H members customarily display their accolades. The state competition featured 142 4-H members from 38 counties. Independence grads ready for the future

by Samie Hartley Staff Writer Commencement ceremonies inevitably focus on the graduates, but at Independence High School, graduation is as much about family, friends and teachers as it about students collecting diplomas.

Support. Encouragement. Patience.

Love. All the student speakers at the Independence event expressed deep gratitude to those who stood by them and pushed them to be their best and work hard for brighter

futures. As students received their diplomas, they greeted their teachers with big hugs and thankful handshakes, sharing smiles and some tears of pride.

As student speaker Justin Hidalgo said it takes a village to raise a child, he noted that while family and friends play a large part in students’ lives, the staff at Independence also played a part in their successes.

While not all 193 graduates got a chance to speak, their enthusiastic reaction to the calling of their names showed they agreed with the student speakers’ upbeat message. Those in the audience clapped and cheered as they clutched bouquets of balloons and flowers to share with their graduates.

For the graduates, the ceremony felt like an eternity as they anxiously played with the emerald gowns waiting to take their turn on the stage. But the wait was worth it. Each graduate from the continuation high school fought hard to earn their degrees and shared a new sense of confidence as they prepared to move into the future.

Before the graduates could leave, Community Education Assistant Director Colleen Sanchez left them with one last bit of wisdom: sometimes opportunity knocks softly, so they must learn to listen carefully. For the Class of 2011, the message has been received loud and clear.

I’ve had some nervous people ask me if I think “what’s going to happen in October� is going to tank the market. Some of them don’t know exactly what’s going to happen in October, they’ve just heard there are BIG changes coming to loans on October 1. What I assume they are worried about is that Jumbo loan limits are going to decrease in high-cost areas from $729,750 to $625,500.

This means that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac (two quasi-government agencies who are now basically wards of the Federal Government) will only back loans up to $625,500. So someone who wants to buy a home for $1,000,000 will have to come up with a down payment of $374,500 instead of $270,250, or pay a slightly higher interest rate to get a non-government-backed loan.

To this, I say, “Big deal...� Median home prices in our area are in the $250-300K range. Not a whole lot of $1,000,000 home sales going on around here anymore.

Jumbo loan limits up to $729,750 are a

recent phenomenon, anyways. They only got that high in 2008 when the entire mortgage market was melting down and the government was throwing everything including the kitchen sink at the problem. The Jumbo limit before then was $417,000 and got raised to $625,000 and then $729,750, but the $729,750 was just a temporary increase.

Loans over $417,000 only make up less than 7% of all loans nationally, and I would guess that percentage is even smaller for our area.

So while this will make loans over $625,000 slightly more expensive or harder to get come October 1, it’s possible that private lenders may step up to the plate to make these loans. And even if they don’t, I don’t think it will have much of an impact on Eastern Contra Costa County either way.

Unlike traditional high school graduation ceremonies, Independence’s festivities include a group of student speakers who deliver speeches of gratitude. Katherine Walker, Amber Clements, Anthony Torres and Jacob Belarski each took a moment to offer best wishes to their fellow grads and personally thank teachers with whom they share their triumph.

For Clements, the opportunity to speak and publicly acknowledge the people who helped her get to graduation day brought tears to her eyes. She did her best to express without crying her appreciation for the love and guidance she received through her high school journey and thanked the staff for their

Each year, the Internal Revenue Service sends millions of letters and notices to taxpayers for a variety of reasons. Here are eight things to know about IRS notices – just in case one shows up in your mailbox.

1. Don’t panic. Many of these letters can be dealt with simply and painlessly.

2. There are a number of reasons why the IRS might send you a notice. Notices may request payment of taxes, notify you of changes to your account, or request additional information. The notice you receive normally covers a very specific issue about your account or tax return.

3. Each letter and notice offers specific instructions on what you are asked to do to satisfy the inquiry.

4. If you receive a correction notice, you should review the correspondence and compare it with the information on your return. Then contact your tax pro.

5. After review with your tax pro, you will decide your next step. If you agree with the correction to your account, then usually no reply is necessary unless a payment is due or the notice directs otherwise.

6. If you do not agree with the correction the IRS made, it is important that you respond as requested. Your tax pro can help you prepare a written explanation of why you disagree and include any documents and information you want the IRS to consider, along with the bottom tearoff portion of the notice. Mail the information to the IRS address shown in the upper left-hand corner of the notice. Allow at least 30 days for a response.

7. Most correspondence can be handled without calling or visiting an IRS office. The choice to respond personally in these matters is fine. Just remember, your tax pro sees many of such correspondence every year. The explanation necessary to clear up such matters may just be semantics. Always notify your tax pro of any inquiries from the IRS. 8. It’s important that you keep copies of any correspondence with your records.

Kids get free lunch The Brentwood Union School District is helping kids get through summer healthier by offering a free Summer Feeding Program.

Children between the ages of 2 and 18 are eligible. The program provides free lunch from now to July 22, and imposes no enrollment, paperwork or income qualifications.

by Joan Grimes, Esq. In every scam, the victim must be desperate. They must “believe” they are going to miss out or possibly die without the product or service. It doesn’t matter what the product or service is although sex, money and death are big sellers.

The mortgage scam was no different. It brought the promise of the American Dream of Homeownership through no money down, interest only or option arm loans.

The loan modification scam is a continuation of mortgage scam. The victim is still desperate, but now they are desperate not to lose the “American Dream.” It is now the promise of a lower fixed monthly payment and a principal reduction.

Most modifications are scams because they do not reduce principal or payment amounts. Get the borrowers to start making “trial” payments and then repeatedly ask for documentation. These are really just “Hope” modifications.

Nothing concrete, just the hope of something in the future like a Hail Mary pass with 30 seconds left in the game.

The lenders know that if the borrower keeps making “trial” payments and “updating” their paperwork, they will have one less property on their books, will have time to negotiate with their mortgage insurer, investor and in some instances investigate the borrowers to see if there has been any irregularities in the loan process. Few people get a meaningful modification. The best we have seen is the accrued interest write down by Wells Fargo Bank on the World Savings Pick-a-Payment loans. I am sure that there will be a few modifications with 40-50% write down of principal, but as an attorney who represented banks for 20 years, they are only going to do it if they made a mistake and are required to make the modification. They didn’t get rich by giving away money.

Most modification programs are scams because there is no up front approval or denial. The borrower submits documentation and begins trial payments not knowing if they will be approved or denied for many months or years.

In the meantime, every month their credit score is being

reduced because they are not paying “as agreed.” The fact is that property valuation and income/debt ratio analysis is a secret and is never disclosed. The borrower has no ability to determine why they have been denied for the modification.

What should they do?

In order to reduce their anxiety, I ask them to work through a 3 step process to see if a modification makes sense.

Step 1- What are the terms of the modification? Is the modification just putting the late payments at the end or is there an interest rate or principal reduction?

Step 2- Can you pay off the balance? A good rule of thumb is that a borrower can payoff 2-2.5 times his gross household income in 30 years and go on vacation and have a child or two. Therefore, if a family’s average gross household income is $100,000, they should not have a home loan which exceeds $250,000. If you determine that you are never going to “own” this property, is this the best use of your money?

Step 3- Is the modification payment less than I would pay in rent? Assuming, the above calculation shows that you will not pay off the balance, is the modification payment still less than rent?

Most loan modifications programs make no sense.

There will be no principal or long term payment reduction.

It is a temporary band-aid. If you are in a trial modification, I urge to consider whether this is in your best interest. The lenders have no problem doing what is in their best interest and you should not either.

July 4 celebration returns to Rivertown

Though it won’t feature fireworks, Antioch’s annual Fourth of July celebration returns to Rivertown after a year at the Somersville Towne Center.

Walter Ruehlig, who wears many charitable hats, announced recently that the daytime parade would return to the downtown area, but that an evening fireworks display would be too costly. He hopes this year’s celebration – which will get rolling on America’s birthday at 10 a.m. at Second and E streets – will become a foundation on which to build.

“I’ve had a ton of people call or e-mail me expressing their delight that Antioch is reviving the tradition of downtown parades after a sad year’s absence,” Ruehlig wrote in an e-mail. “Antioch is a patriotic bastion that really knows how to throw an old-fashioned parade that is vintage small-town America.

The ambience of Rivertown is just an added exclamation mark to a grand old party that in these tough times Antioch needs as morale booster.”

Ruehlig estimates that organizers will need to raise roughly $2,870 for the parade to happen, most of that money to pay Antioch police officers for protection and defray costs associated with setup and takedown. Ruehlig is hoping to tap into the city’s spirit of volunteerism to keep expenses low – and at no cost to the depleted Antioch budget.

Last year, former City Councilwoman Martha Parsons and Susan Davis, wife of Mayor Jim Davis, helped plan the city’s Fourth

of July parade at the Somersville Towne Center, attracting about 100 people. The parade was the victim of budget cuts before Parsons and Susan Davis helped revive the patriotic tradition.

“Antioch throws a really good parade,” Ruehlig said. “I’ve already had some people ask about funding ideas for next year.”

So far, several groups have come forward expressing interest in being part of the parade.

Ruehlig said several car clubs and motorcycle groups, such as those that participated in the Memorial Day Thunder Ceremony, have applied for spots. He has also been contacted by the Fil-Am Club, East County Military Families and a few local churches and martial arts groups. Roughly 70 groups participated in the downtown parade two years ago, a number organizers would like to match or exceed this year.

Ruehlig hopes the event will help renew the public’s interest in the city’s historic district. “It’s good for Rivertown,” he said. “Many (people) go down there once a year, or for some, it’s the first time they’ve been down there. If we missed another year at Rivertown, people wouldn’t even look for it next year. This will revive the interest and people’s attention.”

Amid the color and chaos of balloons and streamers, the graduates’ parents, family and friends celebrated with plenty of cheers, whistles and obligatory horns.

In a nod to the entire student body, graduates who had participated in sports, drama or multi-media classes – to name a few – were asked by Walsh to stand up and take a bow. And it wasn’t just the immediate grads who were honored. Alumni sitting in the audience were acknowledged as part of Liberty’s illustrious history.

“We’re here to celebrate the class of 2011,” said Walsh. “We’re here to

cause those who mind don’t matter, and those who matter don’t mind.”

Peppering his speech with quotes ranging from Abraham Lincoln to Justin Bieber, Valedictorian Giovanni Gajudo posed a challenge to his classmates: “It’s up to us to change the world. Will you show the world that we are the ones to make it better?”

Councilman should resign over allegations Editor: In my opinion I believe that Councilman Brockman needs to resign his seat on the City Council of Brentwood for what appears to be his alleged failure to obtain the proper conditional use permits for the property he owned up in Sunset Park as identified in another newspaper.

This city cannot tolerate its leaders circumventing the zoning rules and regulations, and have to be held accountable for their actions like every other legitimate property owner and legitimate businessmen and women.

When there are two sets of rules … you have no rules.

In my opinion there should be a prompt, independent and transparent investigation of the Planning Commission, the City Council and the appropriate city departments including those employees responsible for allowing this aberration to go on as long as it did.

If we fail to fully investigate this we give the appearance of cronyism and a return to the days of “boss hog politics.”

We are a better city than these allegations and cannot allow Mr. Brockman to embarrass the city, the property owners, the legitimate business community, and its residents any longer.

We certainly cannot allow the appearance of a conflict of interest to be condoned, especially when there are too many hardworking and legitimate property owners and businessmen and women operating in compliance with the proper permits every day.

Councilman did pay city fees Editor: As an elected official I have become somewhat accustomed to personal attacks on my character and integrity by misguided and uninformed individuals or groups;

however, this particular allegation crosses the line and cannot go unanswered.

I am taken aback that an article in the May 29 edition of another newspaper would be so full of misinformation.

Accusations that I, whether a Brentwood City Council member or not, did not pay my required permit fees are blatantly false.

During the construction of my buildings I personally, as the owner and developer of the property, paid more than $290,000 in permit fees. My tenants’ lease contracts required all tenants to pay their own permit fees for their tenant improvements and permits, including any conditional use permit (C.U.P.), which is a standard practice in the industry.

As the owner of the property, I was required to sign all applications for a C.U.P. for any tenant’s application. I did sign the applications for my tenants and, at their requests, I helped walk them through what at times can be a very difficult and arduous process, as I have also done for others and would do for anyone who asked.

All permit fees were in fact paid by the tenants as stated in the article. So I ask: what fees did I or my tenants not pay?

My family has made many sacrifices to allow me to serve my community, which I take very seriously. Plus, we took some risks and invested in our community, but the economic downturn has cost us. Despite the fact that I sometimes fight losing battles, whether economic or personal, I have had to start over and am glad to say that I have not given up.

I had mentioned that, when riding my Harley Davidson, a left-turn signal at Balfour and Main Street would not trip the light, often causing me to wait through more than one cycle until another vehicle would come up behind me. The other concern was a sinkhole in that same area that was dangerous to motorcycle riders.

Within 24 hours I received an e-mail and a phone call responding to my concerns from your Public Works Department. I’m sorry I don’t remember the name of the lady who called; however, she was extremely helpful and courteous.

The situation with the signal was corrected that same day. By the following the day, there were caution signs up near the sinkhole warning others of the danger.

Within another week, the sinkhole was repaired. I was completely impressed by the efficiency of your Public Works Department.

Having relocated to Brentwood only two years ago from another East Bay city with the same population, I am so impressed by the difference in the service received between the two cities. Kudos to our new hometown!

ANTIOCH June 4, 12:45 a.m. Officers of the Antioch Police Department responded to the report of subjects gambling near a bar at 2500 Sycamore Drive. Upon arrival, officers found several subjects kneeling on the ground, money and dice in front of them. As the officers approached, most of the subjects fled. One subject, 42-year-old San Francisco resident Aaron Harris, walked toward the officers, who observed that Harris was wearing body armor under his sweatshirt. Harris acknowledged that he was wearing the body armor, and officers identified a gun in the front pocket of his sweatshirt. Officers attempted to give direction to Harris so that they could take him into custody. Instead, he disregarded the commands and began to resist arrest. After a struggle, Harris was taken into custody and the loaded gun was recovered. During the apprehension, an unidentified subject fired two rounds in the parking lot of the bar. Additional officers responded and gained control of the situation.

Harris was booked into the Martinez Detention Facility for numerous firearm violations, felony possession of body armor and resisting arrest. Harris has a lengthy criminal history, which includes a 1989 conviction for possession of crack cocaine for sale in San Mateo County and a 1994 Contra Costa County conviction for assault with a firearm, first-degree burglary and possession of a firearm by a felon. He was sentenced to state prison in both cases. Those with information regarding this incident should call Detective Mortimer at 925-779-6941.

Although the wet weather led to a dip in attendance at this year’s event, Contra Costa County Fair Manager Lori Marshall is confident that fairgoers enjoyed themselves.

“It was a great event, and everyone who came out had a good time, so I want to thank everyone who braved the weath-

er,” said Marshall.

“Even though it was rainy, it was business as usual. We didn’t have to cancel any of our shows or events. We’re glad people came out and enjoyed themselves, making new memories with their family and friends. We look forward to next year’s fair.”

Successful Heritage season ends in loss

In the seventh inning of Heritage High’s 23rd softball game of the year – the semifinals of the North Coast Section playoffs – the Patriots felt that one of their best seasons ever wasn’t quite ready to end.

Trailing defending NCS champion James Logan by a run, Heritage sparked a comeback. In what looked to be the final inning of their game – and the Patriots’ season – senior leftfielder Melissa O’Hara singled home Kayla Barber to tie the game.

Heritage battled with the host Colts in extra innings, but lost 3-2 after Logan scored in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single from Jazmine Reed. “We had our opportunities, we had our chances, but I thought we played well,” Patriots head coach Ron Rivers said. “I truly feel like we could’ve won that. I’m pretty sure the girls feel the same way. It was a tough game – a hard game.”

Junior pitcher Lisa Rodrigues went all nine innings, giving up two earned runs, striking out eight and going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Sophomore catcher Malia Rivers went 2-for-3 and drew two walks.

Heritage finished with a 15-8 record and will be able to do something that no Bay Valley Athletic League team other than Freedom has

done in 10 years – hang a softball championship banner from its rafters. The two schools will share the BVAL title.

The Patriots beat the Falcons once in the regular season, on April 12, and again in the second round of the NCS playoffs on May 27.

“It just shows that the program is growing and Heritage softball is becoming a force to be reckoned with,” Rivers said. “They responded well and played their butts off.”

Rivers noted that after the Patriots lost back-to-back May games with Freedom and serious BVAL contender Antioch, he issued his players a challenge, one they answered with vigor. Heritage beat its next three opponents – Liberty, Deer Valley and Pittsburg – by a combined 23-4, giving the Patriots a nice boost of momentum heading into the playoffs.

The winning continued in a comeback 4-3 victory in the first round of the postseason over Berkeley, and again in a 6-0 win over Freedom. But facing the defending NCS champion Colts on their home diamond was too much to overcome. Logan fell to Amador Valley in the section title game.

“I’m just happy the team took that challenge after we lost two games,” Rivers said.

Locals impress at state Ready to play

by Justin Lafferty Staff Writer The Bay Valley Athletic League was well-represented at the recent California Interscholastic Federation track and field meet in Clovis, as two athletes and two relay teams made it to the finals.

The best finish by a local team was the Deer Valley girls 400-meter relay team, comprising junior Audrena Harlan and seniors Erica Wilson, Joy Gee and Darnella Jenkins. The Wolverines placed sixth in that race, completing the run in 48.02 seconds.

“I always look at it as trying to remain competitive; that’s the key,” Wolverines head coach Bernard Stephens said. “I was pleased to be able to make it to that state level, and to be with the best nine in California is no small feat.”

The other Deer Valley baton-passing squad – of senior Raven Fox, Wilson, Gee and Jenkins – placed eighth in the 1600meter relay, clocking in at 3:53.75.

Wilson was disqualified in the 300meter hurdles after an official determined that she had not cleared a hurdle with her trail leg. Stephens felt the call was made in error, but was proud of Wilson for running well. “She ran the race of her lifetime,” said Stephens of Wilson, who is regarded as one

Oakley’s Fink a growing Motocross force

After a successful motocross season last year, Oakley’s Adam Fink, 21, finished only two spots away from qualifying for a National Outdoor Race.

But then came a speed bump.

As Fink, a 2007 Freedom High graduate, started to train for this season, a broken kneecap from few years ago that never fully healed began to hurt him. This year, it began to hurt again just short of the series’ first race of the season, on May 21. Fink was forced to undergo surgery on the knee and not resume racing until July.

“I went to the doctor and he told me that I had to have surgery on it,” said Fink. “I wanted to get back for the July 2 race at Thunder Valley in Lakewood, Colorado. But the July 16 race at Red Bud in Buchanan, Michigan seems more likely.”

In 2010, Fink earned enough points in the Lucas Oil Motocross Champions American Motorcyclist Association Pro Racing series to earn his AMA license in the 250 class.

The series, which visits cities all across the United States, draws racers from around the world. As many as 100 hopefuls race to qualify for 40 spots in each event, and 30 to 35 seeded riders are guaranteed spots. This is especially difficult for Fink, as he gets only two 15-minute attempts to qualify, and limited practice time on the track.

If Fink returns on July 16, he’ll have missed six races – half of the season – which has prompted him to attempt qualifying for every race. That trip will take him from coast to coast, matching him against top names like Justin Barcia, Eli Tomac, Dean Wilson and Broc Tickle.

While the broken kneecap has kept Fink off of his bike, he has fought his way through various injuries throughout his career. “One year, before I got my pro card, I finished in the top 20 with a broken ankle,” Fink

Fink is a privateer, which puts him at a tremendous financial disadvantage when racing, as many of his competitors belong to factory teams. Still, Fink isn’t without local backers.

Antioch posted other solid finishes at the preliminary level. Suleman, one of the most decorated BVAL runners, placed 14th in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. The Panthers’ 1600-meter relay team finished 15th out of 28.

Oakwood Water Polo Club splashes down

by Michael Dixon Correspondent Bay Valley Athletic League teams in sports such as football and baseball have been known to struggle when they clash with teams from other parts of Contra Costa County and the Bay Area. A prime example has been water polo, where BVAL teams have rarely advanced from the first two rounds of the NCS playoffs.

The Oakwood Water Polo Club begins its season June 13 in hopes of changing that trend. Club water polo has existed in East County for only two years, a fact that Oakwood’s Co-founder, President, and Technical Director Nick Araujo believes greatly contributes to this area’s lack of success in the sport.

“What was lacking was a structure in the water polo community, or lifestyle,” said Araujo. “Those kids have had programs since fourth or fifth grade and have been together for a number of years when they get to high school.”

The name Oakwood is a combination of Oakley and Brentwood, but the program is open to all kids in East County. The competitive program will start with kids in fourth grade and up, and offer a splashball league to the younger age levels.

The program uses Deer Valley High School’s pool, hopes to branch out to Heritage and Freedom, and looks to get help from the more successful programs throughout the Bay Area. One of those programs is Lamorinda, whose director, Boyd

Lachance, works as a program consultant for Oakwood. Lachance is also the associate head coach of the men’s water polo team at UC Berkeley.

“The East Bay is strong in aquatics,” said Lachance, who has been involved in water polo since 1979. “Oakley, Brentwood and Antioch are kind of on the fringe. It would be great to add (Oakwood) to these communities. There’s a need for it. There will be a benefit in both the short and long term.”

Oakwood’s long-term goal is to recruit elementary and middle-school players into the program so that by the time they reach high school, they’ll have achieved a level of teamwork equal to their opponents. Additionally, Oakwood has instructors who have

contacts with college coaches throughout the country.

One of the older kids who could benefit from Oakwood is Ty Elder, who recently finished his junior year at Heritage. Elder has played water polo since falling in love with the sport as a freshman. He has participated in some of the Bay Area’s club programs and is participating in the Oakwood program as an instructor and student.

Coming off what he admits was one of his worst PBA Tour seasons, the PBA’s all-time leader in Lumber Liquidators Tour titles, Walter Ray Williams Jr., has his game back on track as he prepares to compete in the PBA Senior Northern California Classic June 19-22 at Harvest Park Bowl in Brentwood.

Williams, who won his second Senior Tour title in the recent PBA Senior Mark Roth Allentown Open, will be one of approximately 120 of the world’s top Senior Tour players (age 50 and over) who will compete in the Senior Northern California Classic, the sixth stop of the 2011 Senior Tour season.

Drew Gagnon, class of 2008, was drafted on Tuesday in the third round (100th pick) of the Major League Baseball draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

earned run average this season while striking out a team-high 84 batters.

A while later, 2006 alumnus Mike McCarthy was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 14th round of the draft – the 442nd pick. McCarthy, a redshirt senior pitcher for the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners, accrued a scant 1.62 ERA and held batters to a .212 average this season.

Gagnon is one of the highest baseball draft picks to come out of the Bay Valley Athletic League since the Cincinnati Reds selected Chris Gruler from Liberty third overall in 2002.

If he signs, Gagnon will join his older brother, Ty, a 2007 Liberty grad, as a professional ballplayer. Ty was drafted in 2009 by the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round.

“I’ve been waiting basically my whole life for this and it finally happened,” Gagnon said. “It’s an honor. You can’t really ask for anything more.”

Though Gagnon has one more year of NCAA eligibility, he’ll likely sign his professional contract, noting that the scholarship is available as a backup plan.

In his senior season at Liberty, Gagnon put up a 1.58 ERA, batted .371 and drove in 17 runs.

McCarthy, also a righthanded pitcher, leaves Cal State Bakersfield as one of the school’s most decorated players. He set the school record for most strikeouts in a game – 13 on April 13 against Fresno State. Mc-

Remembering makes Relay special

by Ruth Roberts Staff Writer Just days before the big event, the driveway of Gursky Ranch is lined with the trademark purple ribbons and signs signifying the upcoming Relay For Life event.

In the back room of her popular country store, Relay co-chair Lynn Gursky is wearing a Relay T-shirt and taking last-minute phone registrations as the final details of the 24hour Brentwood fundraiser take shape.

“We’re getting there,” laughed Gursky.

“The last few days are always a little crazy, but it’ll come together. It always does.”

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s primary fundraiser, held each year in towns and communities the world over. The 24-hour event is divided into three themes: Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back.

“We start with the celebration portion of the event – the celebration of cancer survivors who are having another birthday,” said Gursky. “And then we go on to Fight Back, and that’s really why we’re all there: to learn how to live a healthier lifestyle. And finally at dusk we Remember. those who are still battling cancer. It’s a very moving ceremony.”

For Gursky – a longtime Relay supporter – the remembrance portion of Relay has become especially poignant. In 2009 she lost her husband Roy to cancer, and subsequent Relays are now even more important to her family.

“The first few Relays were a little difficult because of the family tie,” said Gursky.

“But cancer does that; it changes lives and I have so many friends still in the fight … the community and local businesses have been so generous in their support. There really is a

Relay family and there are people I have met and become close friends with that I never would have met without this event.”

And each year the two families come together for a weekend of solidarity, support and hope. For Gursky, it’s the latter that keeps her inspired. “Hope is the gift that everyone who participates will receive,” she said. “In our personal situation, I know that my husband had hope, and I believe it’s part of the reason he kept going until he absolutely couldn’t anymore. He really believed he would beat it.”

High School this weekend to celebrate, remember and fight back for those whose lives have been touched in some way by cancer.

It’s Gursky’s wish that everyone who takes part will benefit as she has from the camaraderie and support.

“For me,” said Gursky, “participating in this event gives me a sense that I’m doing something so that other families won’t have to go through the loss and suffering that have affected so many in our community and my family personally. It really is a wonderful event.”

Relay will end, but fight continues

by Samie Hartley Staff Writer When the sun resurfaces above the horizon, Relay For Life is nearly complete. Teams have been circling the track for nearly 24 hours, pledging their support to find cancer’s cure. It is in those early hours after dawn that participants must decide how to keep Relay a part of their lives until the next Relay comes along. How will you continue to fight back against cancer?

Unlike the Celebrate and Remember portions of the Relay For Life cycle, the final stage, Fight Back, is a personal choice.

There is no one way to fight back against cancer. Some fight as it infects their bodies, while those who are still healthy look for a way to support their friends battling cancer and show their ongoing support of the efforts made by the American Cancer Society to find a cure.

For Dr. Nicola Ally, a radiation oncologist at the Epic Center in Antioch, Relay is an opportunity to remind the community about the resources available to cancer patients and caregivers so that they needn’t fight alone.

“Cancer is not a death sentence like it was 30 years ago,” said Ally. “Today, patients have more access to information and treatment centers. They don’t have to go across the country for care.

“There are new treatments to improve chances for survival. We know so much more, and having access to all that information gives cancer patients confidence that they can fight back.”

According to Ally, Epic Center’s care providers treat the whole patient and not just the disease. For those afflicted with cancer, the center offers nutrition guidance as well as pain control and refers patients and caregivers to community support groups. It’s one thing to treat the disease, but doctors help patients live as normal a life as possible – not allowing patients be defined by their disease.

“It’s one thing to look at a chest Xray that’s great and cancer free, but we want to make sure that the patient feels great as well,” Ally said. “Our main goal is to bring extraordinary care to our patients through caring and excellent physicians, top-notch nursing staff and a wonderful office staff to support patients

and their needs. We believe that providing comprehensive cancer care under one roof brings more efficient, advanced and holistic care to patients because our team communicates so effectively on more than one level.”

But one of the most important elements of fighting back, said Ally, is talking back. Cancer patients need to keep an open dialogue with friends and family and urge them to get tested and screened for cancers, especially those that might be genetically at risk. Talking back also allows patients and survivors to advocate the importance of living healthy lives. It’s not only cancer patients who should focus on fighting back. Cancer-free individuals should take the fight against cancer just as seriously. While new information about

cancer treatment is available, information about cancer prevention is also plentiful.

For one, people need to make an appointment with their doctor for regular checkups and physicals. At certain ages, people are required to partake in preventative cancer measures such as colonoscopies, mammograms for women, and prostate exams for men. It’s also vital they discuss with their doctor a nutrition and exercise plan.

Ally strongly recommends kicking the cigarette habit, which she said has been linked to lung, mouth and throat cancer as well as cancer of the pancreas, bladder and kidneys. Limiting alcohol consumption can also reduce cancer risks. see Fight page 6B

Less than a month from the opening ceremonies, the Antioch/Pittsburg Relay For Life has already raised more than $35,000 for cancer research, but just like last year, a sizeable amount could come in as the event draws closer.

The 24-hour walkathon benefiting the American Cancer Society starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 on the Los Medanos College football practice field in Pittsburg.

As of Tuesday, 67 teams comprising 385 dedicated participants have signed up, about on par with last year’s event.

“It’s going well,” event co-chair Amanda Roa said. “Things are a lot smoother this year.”

This is the second year Roa has coordinated the event with Monica Olson.

According to Roa, last year’s online donations were less than anticipated. But coordinators were pleasantly surprised when donations on the day of the Relay nearly equaled what was already in the bank, bringing the 2010 total to more than $105,000.

“We thought we were really behind on fundraising,” Roa said. “The day of Relay was a surprise.”

Now that Roa and Olson have a year under their belts, they plan to move some things around to utilize LMC as an efficient Relay center.

Awareness knocks cancer’s socks off “We can send a man to the moon but we can’t cure cancer.” I’ve been hearing this since we took that one small step for a man and giant leap for mankind.

Well, I think mankind needs more than a leap. It needs a big hard push.

We have the SENIOR greatest technology ORNER and resources in the world; we harness brilliant minds to figure out the intricacies of creating space telescopes; we can build anything from a nuclear power plant to the most lavish MARLA amusement parks LUCKHARDT – but we can’t stop a bunch of nasty little cells that wreak havoc on bodies and souls.

We’ve all been touched by cancer in one way or another: a friend, a loved one, a family member, ourselves. This is not some rare illness we can ignore in the hope that someone else will handle it. We all need to get it done … and now.

I applaud the many who participate in the Relay For Life event and support all the fundraising events related to cancer. The hard work and strong hearts of the volunteers and participants raise a lot of money for research and related necessities such as medicine, aftercare and grief counseling, to name a few. We need to keep supporting them in the hopes that with this money and a whole lot of luck someone will wake up one day with

One way you can fight cancer is to knock its socks off early. Arrange for an annual physical and make sure your doctor is aware of any history of cancer in your family. Schedule a dermatologist to examine every inch of your body for skin cancer. I have heard many people say “it’s only a little skin tag” – and find out too late that it became melanoma, which can be as deadly as any other cancer.

Ladies need to get mammograms and cervical checkups. Men need to get prostate exams and full physicals. Both men and women should regularly examine themselves for breast cancer. Yes, men can get breast cancer too! Any changes in your skin, such as the appearance of a strange lump, should be looked at immediately.

We all know our own bodies and can usually tell when something isn’t right.

If you believe your doctor is too blasé about your concerns, get a second opinion. The second co-pay is an acceptable price for peace of mind. It’s commendable to care and watch out for loved ones, but our tendency is to put off our own health problems. Since cancer is a strong and quick enemy, time is an important factor. Early detection can be lifesaving.

Now Enrolling CT scans can catch Kids Summer Camp cancer in early stage 240-2990 Lung cancer kills more people each year than any other form of cancer. A recent medical study found, however, that one screening procedure for those at greatest risk of lung cancer can help catch the disease in its early stages.

The initial results of the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Cancer Screening Trial showed that the mortality rate for those at greatest risk for lung cancer can be reduced by 20 percent with the help of regular screening using low-dose CT scans – a diagnostic procedure that produces detailed three-dimensional images.

The ongoing study examined the effectiveness of both chest X-rays and CT scans used for screening in current and former heavy smokers ages 55 to 74. Screening using chest X-rays was not proven to reduce mortality rates in the individuals being studied, yet it was shown that CT scans had the ability to detect tumors at earlier stages.

The results are consistent with previous findings by Dr. Claudia Henschke of The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Her findings have shown that annual screening with CT scans can help detect lung cancer in its early and more treatable stages – data corroborated by the NCI study.

“The NCI findings confirm what our researchers have believed for quite some time: those at the most risk for lung cancer should talk to their physicians about a low-dose CT lung screening,” said Dr. Raja Flores, chief of Thoracic Surgery at The Mount Sinai Medical Center. Flores noted that early detection makes lung cancer screening a good option for those at high risk.

So who should contact their doctors about CT scan screening? The Mount Si-

Dr. Raja Flores nai Medical Center recommends that current and former smokers older than 40 with a smoking history of at least a pack a day for 10 years or more ask their doctor whether screening would be a good option for them.

To be administered a CT scan, the patient lies still on a table connected to the doughnut-shaped CT scanner and the table simply slides through the doughnut in 20 seconds. No injections or medications are needed.

While those at greatest risk of lung cancer should get screened, those who aren’t at high risk should take the following precautions to avoid developing lung cancer: • Don’t smoke. If you do, quit. According to the American Cancer Society, smoking accounts for 87 percent of lung cancer deaths.

• Avoid places where people are smoking, as exposure to secondhand smoke can also lead to lung cancer.

• Test your home for radon gases and asbestos. Get these substances removed if they are in the home.

• Do not work in a place with exposed asbestos.
