Lifestyle Awards
Big Break Regional Shoreline and nearby Big Break Marina adored by locals
Oakley residents have ranked the Big Break Regional Shoreline, situated on a beautiful spot on the shore of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta with walking and bird-watching paths, as the best place to show a visitor and best view in town in the Best of Oakley contest.
This East Bay Regional Park has accessible walking trails and an information-packed visitor center featuring several programs and events for visitors.
“Our location is incredible. We have a lot of biodiversity here within a pretty small space, so you can walk around the park and see birds, otters, muskrats, fish and all types of wildlife,” explained Supervising Naturalist Wyatt Moore. “The park is also incredibly accessible; we don’t charge parking or entrance fees. All of our trails are relatively flat, and most are paved. We really welcome everyone here.”
Moore has worked at the park for nearly a year and is incredibly passionate about the wide range of amenities which Big Break offers the public. While the park is open to the public for walking, birdwatching, biking and fishing, the
visitor center also conducts several events and programs throughout the year, including youth learning programs every weekend, themed campfires on the second weekend of every month and larger celebrations on holidays like Halloween and the Summer Solstice.
“I think what makes Big Break such a great place to visit is the community in general,” said Moore. “The visitor center is like a community center for Oakley, Brentwood, and beyond because the people here are really special and kind and really care about this area.”
The park is open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the visitor center is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information about their programs and events, visit their website: www.ebparks.org/parks/big-break or call 510-544-3050.
Close behind the Big Break Regional Shoreline in the Best Places to Show a Visitor contest is nearby Big Break Marina, located at 100 Big Break Road.
The Marina boasts prolific wildlife and excellent views of the Sacramento-San
Joaquin River Delta as well as calm waters perfect for water activities.
“We are located a little ways off of the main channel, so our waters are excellent for fishing, kayaking and paddle boarding,” said Edward Paoli, the marina’s property and maintenance manager. “We also have shipwrecks which people can view from the water.”
The Marina also serves as a boat storage and launching area and is great for sailing and windsurfing. Kayaks and paddle boards can be rented for nominal fees.
The marina is presently working to improve their amenities, with plans to open a restaurant in the area as well as develop fishing programs for local youth groups and high schools.
“My favorite thing about the marina is that it is a quiet, family-oriented place to be,” said Paoli. “Everyone knows everybody and is polite to everybody. There are wonderful faces and wonderful places.”
For more information about hours of operation, boat storage and equipment rentals, call the Marina at 925-679-0900.

Oakley businesses honored for giving back to the community
In addition to providing garbage and recycling services to Oakley residents and businesses, Mt. Diablo Resource Recovery makes an effort to be involved in the local community.
Chief Administrative Officer Kish Rajan said the company supports organizations like Rotary Club of Oakley and Friends of Oakley, and appears at city events.
“We really try to find a myriad of ways to get involved,” Rajan said. “We are always open to interacting with the community at events, special events, and well-established community-based initiatives. We are always looking for ways to participate, whether in community endeavors or with service support. For example, through the capacity and infrastructure, we can lend to community events.”
Mt. Diablo Resource recovery has a staff who sets up tables, talks to the public and looks for ways to give back. The company also welcomes the public to visit its facilities – mostly located in Pittsburg – to see their recently renovated recycling plant or make use of the public recycling operation.
Rajan and his staff have been focusing on the changes coming with the passage of
Senate Bill 1383, a statewide organic waste recycling and surplus food recovery plan. Mt. Diablo customers use their green waste bins only for yard clippings. Beginning in the next year, customers will be able to use their green bins to collect regular food waste, keeping methane gas-causing waste out of landfills.
“The organic material in landfills ultimately becomes a big producer of methane gas. And to combat greenhouse gas emissions, we will be building facilities to process that organic food waste,” said Rajan. “We look forward to communicating with the community openly about the best way to do that.”
Oakley Self Storage’s facility offers several types of units to accommodate customers’ needs, including drive-up storage and climate-controlled units for hot summer months.
The company also takes pride in giving back to the local community.
“Currently, we support several non-profit organizations, including Girl Scouts, Pillars of Hope, Oakley Rotary Club, East County Little League, Friends of Oakley, Oakley Police Department and Relay for Life,” said Oakley Self Storage
Director Ryan Lorenzini. “We help these organizations by providing free storage, sponsorships and also by participating in their local charity events.”
Lorenzini said Girl Scouts sell their cookies on the property each spring. Every year, employees attend and participate in the Relay for Life, which helps communities fight cancer. During the holiday season, Oakley Self Storage supports Friends of Oakley by hosting a food and toy drive to gather supplies for local families. The organization also supports Pillars of Hope to fight human trafficking, champions local kids at East County Little League, and is supports the Oakley Rotary Club and the Oakley Police Department.
“Oakley Self Storage takes pride in our community, and is dedicated to helping the individuals within it,” Lorenzini said. “We are devoted to the community in which we serve by enthusiastically giving back in a variety of ways … We truly believe in making a difference in the everyday lives and well-being of those around us, and thanks to the continual support of our incredible customers, we’re able to do just that.”

From hosting tree-planting events for Earth Day to supporting local graduates with scholarships, Rotary Club of Oakley truly exemplifies their “service above self” motto, which is why they’ve once again won gold in this year’s "Best Non-Profit" Best of Oakley category.

This year’s silver winner is none other than Adventure Therapy Foundation. Founded in 2018, ATF is the heart project of Lauren Huffmaster, who is a survivor of stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. The organization’s mission is to support families affected by cancer.
“Cancer, for me, is not a valley darkened by the shadow of mountain-top experiences. Cancer is the calling of my life,” Huffmaster said. “It is through my brokenness that I hope to demonstrate love. I founded Adventure Therapy so that I may have an outlet to serve others impacted by cancer. I know the pain cancer causes. My own experience motivates me to seek out solutions that may minimize the burden of cancer from the lives of others.”
Since the organization’s beginning, it has expanded to serve individuals and families living with the emotional side effects of cancer. Through cancer coaching and retreats, families are
encouraged to confront those emotional side effects of cancer and engage in meaningful experiences together, according to the ATF website.
Most recently, Huffmaster has launched a platform called RISE. The platform offers teaching modules that cancer survivors and their families can utilize as a resource to work through the emotional trauma of their diagnosis and be able to move forward with living their best life. According to the RISE website, this virtual platform provides individuals impacted by cancer the opportunity to walk through guided discussion topics, from the privacy of their homes, at a pace that fits their lifestyle. The virtual nature of the platform allows patients across economic, ethnic, geographic, or cancer types to engage equally.

Best of The Rest
Not all of our Best of Oakley honorees are displayed in a window or showcased on an office wall, but they are winners just the same. We call them the Best of The Rest: a special group that perfectly complements the winners and highlights what is best about Oakley and the residents that call it home.
THE BEST PARK:
The Nunn-Wilson Family Park
The Nunn-Wilson Family Park, which opened in 2008, was once again named the city’s best park by Oakley residents, and for good reason. Located at 100 Oxford Dr., the park features a wealth of amenities, including a playground, an adult fitness area and a water feature as well as grass, picnic tables, a barbecue area and a basketball court.
THE BEST NEW BUILDING:
The Contra Costa Logistics Center
The 2.2 million-square foot Contra Costa Logistics Center, situated on a 143-acre site at 6000 Bridgehead Road, stood out to voters as the best new building in town. Known as the only state-of-the-art logistics center in East or Central Contra Costa County, the sprawling property features onsite BNSF rail service and its own highway on-ramp at SR-160 and Wilbur Ave. The center is expected to eventually support a variety of light industrial and logistics companies and create 2,000 jobs, with arguably its highest-profile tenant, Amazon, already in place.
THE BEST NEWS OF 2022:
The End of the Mask Mandate and Kids Returning to School
The related events of masks coming off and the resumption of the joy of in-person schooling were chosen as the best news of the year by residents. The mask mandate officially ended in March, although face coverings were still permitted for use by those who wanted to wear them. Regardless of whether students chose to continue wearing masks, in-person learning resumed, which many educational leaders lauded as the best possible outcome for students’ academic and social wellbeing.
THE BEST HISTORIC BUILDING:
The Good Finds Building
The Good Finds Building, on the corner of Main and Third streets, did more than attract customers this year; it drew the votes of Oakley readers for the best historic building in town. Good Finds, a furniture store, is currently located inside the building at 3647 Main St., and the building’s history and rustic look are often the first thing which customers notice about the store.
