Hello, Oakley!
The Press is thrilled to announce the publication of our 18th issue of the annual Best of Oakley Winners Guide.
If you’ve never picked one up before, this magazine features Oakley’s best restaurants, businesses, professional services, parks and more as voted by our readers. Our hardworking staff tabulated readers’ opinion surveys to find out what residents consider the best of the best, and the results are listed here for your reference.
Whether you’re on the hunt for a new restaurant, recreational area or professional service, it’s all listed here in The Best of Oakley, which is available everywhere in town.
Patronize local businesses with the eyecatching “Best of Oakley 2024” sticker on their store windows, doors and vehicles and let them know you saw them in The Best of Oakley 2025.
The Best of Oakley Readers’ Choice awards give residents a chance to spotlight their favorite businesses, restaurants and recreation destinations. Every year, our readers answer several questions about their favorite places in Oakley, and 2025 was no different. As a thank-you, we’ve put the ballots in a random drawing to win a $50 gift certificate to the Black Bear Diner.
Winners are featured below. This year, we have one more question: What do you love most about the businesses in Oakley?
“ Oakley businesses have a personal feel. ”
– Leo Mangante.
“ I love the sense of community with all of the Oakley businesses. ”
– Molly Mendez
“ Every business I’ve been a customer of has treated me with so much love and respect! Such positive environments and interactions all the time. ”
– Nevaeh Long

Oakley’s Big Break Regional Shoreline has long been a popular spot with locals and visitors alike, and 2025 proved no exception. The protected estuary won gold in four categories: Best Park, Best Place to Show a Visitor, Best Place to Walk a Dog and Best View in Town
Supervising Naturalist Wyatt Moore said the staff at Big Break works hard to maintain both the park and visitor center.
“Our whole job here is to provide a safe place for people to visit the park and connect to the outdoors,” Moore said. “Whether that’s through walking or fishing or kayaking, we just want people to feel comfortable coming here, learning, growing and connecting to the park.”
Big Break is part of the East Bay Regional Parks District (EBRPD) and hosted 50,000 visitors last year. At one time,
the land was part of an asparagus farm, and visitors can still see asparagus plants sprouting all over the park amongst native flora.
Big Break lies in the zone where salty seawater meets snowmelt runoff from the Sierra Nevada, creating a unique habitat supporting over 70 species of birds and mammals.
The Big Break visitor center hosts free activities for all ages and houses hands-on educational tools illustrating how local plants and animals use the park. While some species use it as a stopping point during their migrations, others live there year-round, including river otters, beavers and turtles.
On a clear day, the Sierra Nevada are visible across the Central Valley to the east, and marine traffic can be seen traveling the San Joaquin River to the north.
Moore noted that leashed dogs are allowed in the park on paved paths, the observation pier and some trails. Dogs are not allowed on the levy top trail, which passes through critical habitat areas. The park’s Big Break Trail extends 2.5 miles to the Marsh Creek Trail and is a popular option for many walkers, both with and without dogs.
Big Break Regional Shoreline is at 69 Big Break Road in Oakley.
The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. and the visitor center is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. For more information about their programs and events, visit their website: www.ebparks.org/parks/bigbreak or call (510) 544-3050.

Oakley residents expressed their appreciation for two local companies that put their hearts in giving back into the community.
GOLD Perfect Star Heating, Air Conditioning and Electrical. Owner Chris Donzelli said East County makes up a large portion of his business, and he’s happy to give back to the community.
“We do a lot of different community outreach,” Donzelli said. “But the main project we do each year is we work with Lennox, one of our distributors, and we give a free system to a local hometown hereo or someone in need of an HVAC system.”
As part of the project, Perfect Star’s team goes to the home of the beneficiary and installs the new system for free. He
said the company also donates $10 from every tune-up service to a local nonprofit, collaborates with local rotary clubs, and participates in local events. Perfect Star hosted a booth at Freedom High School’s first trade fair, held in February of this year.
“We also do outreach with veterans’ programs, the Food Bank of Contra Costa County, and Joy Bound for pets,” Donzelli said. “Our team really supports our business intiitave, which is to give back to the communities we live in. Our kids are growing up here and we want to make sure our money goes back into the places our kids are.”

GOLD Oakley voters chose their local Rotary club as the Best Nonprofit for 2025. The Rotary Club of Oakley was established in 2019 and has seen growth in its membership and impact since then.
“Rotary’s motto, ‘Service Above Self,’ isn’t just a phrase,” said Rotary president Rob Greaff in an email. “It reflects the spirit and purpose behind every project we take on. That shared mission is what drew me to Rotary and continues to inspire my involvement.”
Greaff said the club is active, and takes on a variety of projects from Girls Empowerment for all of Oakley’s eighthgrade girls, Christmas baskets during the holidays, passing out dictionaries for all local third graders, a barbecue lunch for Freedom High School staff, roadside clean-ups and a fundraising partnership with the Friends of the Oakley Library.
Greaff said the club’s projects were possible because of support of Rotary members and local businesses that give back to the community. Through club
dues, sponsorships and fundraisers, the club generates approximately $90,000 annually, and serves over 1,600 local residents.
The Oakley Rotary Club meets weekly on Thursday at 7:30 a.m. at Black Bear Diner, 3201 Main St. in Oakley. For more information, visit www rotaryclubofoakley com
SILVER Oakley residents voted Friends of the Oakley Library as their second-favorite non-profit in the city this year.
Founded in 1972, the Friends of the Oakley Library has made its mission to support the Oakley Library by enhancing collections, programs, and facilities, to enrich the lives of Oakley’s diverse community. The 501(c)3 nonprofit organization is supported entirely by volunteers.
In the past year, the Friends of the Oakley Library has been instrumental in helping secure funding for a brand
new library for the city. Since 1913, the Oakley Library has been housed in several different locations, until 1999, when the library was temporarily moved to Freedom High School. Currently, the Oakley Library shares a 6,000 square-foot space with the Freedom High School Library. Thanks in part to the efforts of the Friends of the Oakley Library, the project has raised more than $10 million to help fund the new joint library and community center to be located in Oakley’s Civic Center Plaza. The library is projected to be roughly 11,000 square feet.
In addition to fundraising for a new library, the Friends of the Oakley Library have helped to acquire library materials, such as books and games, for patrons to enjoy and have assisted in funding several library programs, such as book giveaways, author meet-and-greets and educational cultural events.

The City of Oakley won two categories: Best Government Spending – GOLD for "Day of Service' – and SILVER for Parks
The City of Oakley held its first “Day of Service” in April and residents loved it. The event was proposed by Councilmember Anissa Williams, who was mayor at the time, and aimed to bring Oakley residents, businesses and staff together in community service.
Assistant City Manager Danielle Navarro said the day kicked off at the Oakley Recreation Center with a breakfast cooked and served by the city manager’s leadership team, then volunteers headed to one of five project sites: Neroly Road Beautification, Recreation Center Beautification, Koda Dog Park Tree Planning, Delaney Park Tree Planting or Marsh Creek Clean Up. Approximately 200 volunteers joined local business to make Oakley a “cleaner and greener community.”
Voters also expressed their appreciation for Oakley’s parks, specifically Nunn-Wilson and Crockett parks, which took SILVER and BRONZE, respectively.
Public Works Maintenance Manager Jess Dela Cruz said the city works hard to design parks to be family-friendly and
appeal to a broad range of residents.
Nunn-Wilson opened in 2008 and features an adult fitness area, basketball court, barbecues, a grass area, picnic tables, a playground and a water feature. Dela Cruz said the water feature is popular with Oakley’s younger demographic. Crockett Park opened in 1994 and has an all-abilities play structure, basketball court, barbecues, benches, a grass area, picnic tables, restrooms and a tennis court.
In the search for Best Historic Building is a GOLD between the Old General Store - The Bistro SILVER goes to the East Contra Costa Historical Society.
For Best Historic Building, the Old General Store - The Bistro for gold, with the East Contra Costa Historical Society’s (ECCHS) museum, in the Byer Nail house taking silver.
General Store - The Bistro:
Oakley’s Bistro Punahele Tonnelier returned this year as a favorite old building with residents. The Bistro was restored and is home to a café serving American fare with French and Hawaiian influences.
The restoration began when owners Sydney and Stephane Tonnelier were granted a $75,000 loan through Oakley’s
downtown revitalization project to fix up the building and open a restaurant.
The little brick building at 3530 Main St. has seen many owners in its 113 years. As part of the downtown revitalization, the structure was literally cut in half to make room for the widened street, and a new section was added to the rear. During the restoration, the building’s original back windows were installed on the wall separating the kitchen and dining areas. The rest of the renovations were less invasive, and guests can enjoy the historic atmosphere in modern comfort.
East Contra Costa Historical Society:
Built in 1878 by Johnson Fancher, the Byer Nail house sits just south of the intersection of Byron Highway and Sunset Road and acts as the ECCHS’s museum. It originally served as a boarding house for land speculators and travelers. But when the railroad was built five miles west of what is today Sellers Avenue, accessibility became an issue and the house was sold to John Richard Byer in 1883. Byer and his wife, Leticia, raised their family there. In 1984, the house, along with 1.3 acres of land, was donated to the historical society and it has served as the museum of local history where the public can see an example of what life was like in the past.

GOLD Oakley residents voted the Oakley Mercantile Building at 3350 Main St. as their favorite new building of the past year.
According to City Manager Josh McMurray, the building is just over 10,000 square feet and was completed in mid-2024, with tenants opening shortly after.
The project first broke ground in 2020 with city officials identifying it at the time as a spot intended to attract restaurants, coffee shops and retailers.
“This is an exciting project for downtown Oakley,” said then-Mayor Kevin Romick at the start of the project’s construction. “It builds on what we already have and kind of fulfills our vision of our downtown-specific plan that we
helped create with the citizens of Oakley a couple of years ago.”
Since its completion last year, the building has welcomed five businesses that provide Okaley residents with even more recreational options than before. These tenants are:
• Stepz Dance Fitness Studio
• RAWmix Juice Bar
• Tortas Ahogadas El Tio
• Beer Aisle
• Chrome Coffee
SILVER Residents also voted for the opening of the new senior center, Studio 55, located at the Community Center at 1250 O’Hara Ave as best new building.
The new center opened in May of this year as a place for those 55 and older to enjoy a number of activities which had
previously been held at the old senior center on Second Street.
“During the 2024 community-wide effort to identify funding for a new larger Oakley Library with a community center, the City Council, staff and community stakeholders also focused on how to better serve Oakley’s aging population in advance of the planned demolition of the current Oakley Senior Center, which is leased by and run by a nonprofit club, the Oakley Senior Citizens,” said Danielle Navarro, assistant city manager of Oakley describing how the idea came about. “Based on the community center project funding allocated by the city and raised by the Friends of the Oakley Library over the past year, we don’t anticipate having a space dedicated entirely to
one community or group; it will be flex space.”
Navarro said the city recognizes the needs of residents aged 55 and older.
“Between the main recreation building, the dedicated Studio 55 space, city parks and trails, the city is not only able to offer existing classes, we are also expanding classes and daily activities.”
Navarro said the name for the space came from three sources: “the space Studio 55 occupies was already called a studio, the programming is for community members aged 55 and up and the famed Studio 54 theater and nightclub in New York.”
To find out more about new activities for seniors and other information, visit www oakleyca gov/studio55 or call 209-400-1673.
