Each spring, Antioch High School honors as co-valedictorian those students who have attained a perfect 4.0 GPA. This year the Class of 2009 boasts seven top academics, all with their own plans and goals for the future. Michael Devengenzo, editor of the school newspaper and yearbook, will be attending UC Davis in the fall and plans to major in biochemistry. Chantz Imholz will be studying animal sciences at Cal State Fresno with an eye toward medical school. The Antioch High soccer player has received a full-ride scholarship through the prestigious Smittcamp Family Honors College at Fresno. Narimane Nekkab is Berkeley bound, where she plans to major in chemistry. The Antioch High track and cross-country star is looking forward to a career in the medical and pharmaceutical field. Narimane’s co-valedictorian and friend Teresa Vu will be attending another prestigious university in the fall – Stanford. “We both planned it that way,” laughed Teresa. “We both wanted to go to top universities, see Seven page 21A

AUSD names acting superintendent Board also receives report saying porn case response was ‘appropriate’ by Dave Roberts Staff Writer
The Antioch Unified School District Board has promoted Donald Gill as acting superintendent, working alongside Superintendent Deborah Sims, who recently announced her resignation and will be leaving on Aug. 31. “Dr. Gill will be coordinating with Dr. Sims, and will be involved in all major decisions and public pronouncements and will carry out Dr. Sims’ duties in any absence from the office,” said board President Walter Ruehlig via e-mail,
adding that Gill will help provide a “smooth and seamless” transition as Sims phases out. Meanwhile, the board will be searching for a new superintendent. If one is not hired by Aug. 31, an interim superintendent will be appointed, according to Ruehlig. No decision has been made on whether the interim superintendent, if needed, would be Gill. Gill, who joined AUSD as director of curriculum and instruction in July 2008, has worked for California schools for 30 years, including as an elementary teacher, high school science teacher, principal and assis-

tant superintendent. Gill’s promotion puts the AUSD in the unusual position of in effect having two superintendents for the next 11 weeks. When asked how that will work and what Sims will be doing, Ruehlig said, “She’s still effectively superintendent until Aug. 31, but all major public pronouncements and decisions will be coordinated through the acting superintendent. I presume she will be spending a fair amount of time out of office due to the transition.” In other action at the June 4 see Superintendent page 21A
