“You get to watch that kitten blossom from a helpless little animal to a confident, playful companion and send them off to their forever home,” said Shortridge.

“In my experience, most pets feel anxiety and stress going to a boarding facility,” said Brentwood resident Martha Viola, president of Passionate about Pets.

“There are a few places that are welcome sights to our four-legged babies, but home is always the best and most comfortable.”

While Viola is quick to point out there is no substitution for the pet’s owner, she works hard to customize her services for both. Pet owners have the option of choosing pet visits or an overnight stay. Pet visits provide potty breaks, playtime and feedings.

Viola started the pet-sitting business

because she loves animals. Working at an animal hospital as a veterinary assistant for several years gave her firsthand experience caring for them.

“My favorite part of the job was interacting with pets and learning as much as I could about the health and well-being of each,” she said.

When it came to starting her own business, Viola wanted to combine her love for animals with her compassion and respect for their owners.

“I wanted to create a business that accommodates pets and people,” said Viola. “I like to try to make a bond with animals, so they are relaxed and understand I will take as good of care of them as their owner.”

Since starting her business earlier this year, Viola has taken care of cats, dogs, cattle, horses, miniature donkeys, fish, a ferret, a snake and a Starling bird she taught to say “I love you.”

Brentwood resident Deborah Majewski had Viola take care of her dogs CJ and Nala as well as their litter of 10 puppies.

Points to consider before buying a horse

Horses are magnificent animals that can bring joy and companionship, but those interested in owning a horse must recognize such ownership is a significant responsibility, unlike more traditional pet ownership.

Whether raising a horse for pleasure or profession, it is important to know caring for horses can be labor intensive. The reward for properly taking care of a horse is a healthy and well-trained animal, but horse ownership is a significant and expensive responsibility. It is important prospective owners understand what they are getting into before they make any final decisions.

Breed The first to consider when mulling horse ownership is the breed. If you are unfamiliar with horses, it is best to research different breeds online and visit horse breeders and owners. Perhaps workers at a stable or farm nearby can guide your choice. There also are forums devoted to horses and care. Some recommended breeds for first-time owners include quarter horses, paints and Morgans.

However, all horses are individuals and may have their own unique personality traits.

Acreage and housing Horses are large animals and will need room to exercise and roam. They require a corral or pasture to stretch their legs, so a

potential horse owner will need a relatively large property to give a horse the space it needs. In addition to the corral, the horse will require a shelter from the elements. A shed or stable should be at least 10 to 12 feet in both width and length. The height of the stable should be a minimum of 8 feet. This stable will provide shelter in both the cold and heat.

When establishing a pasture, be sure the fence is tall enough that the horse cannot easily jump it. The fence should also be clearly visible, so the animal does not mistakenly try to go through it, risking entanglement or injury.

Feeding The average saddle horse weighs roughly 1,000 pounds or more. The animal can eat anywhere from 17 to 26 pounds of feed per

day. Feed is a combination of grain, hay and pasture, but salt also should be made available to the horse. If the weather prevents grazing, supplemental hay will be needed. Keep in mind hay bails can weigh up to 85 pounds.

They also will take up considerable space. This is something to be factored into the space requirement for a horse. Feed and water troughs can be purchased at livestock supply stores or repurposed from buckets and barrels.

Horses need plenty of fresh water to drink, and the water trough should be checked and cleaned regularly to maintain a sanitary environment.

Tack and saddles Depending on how you use the horse, you will need saddles, reins, bits, stirrups,

cinches, spurs, ropes and collars. Saddlebags and cushions may be needed if you will be on the horse for long periods of time. If a horse tack retailer is not nearby, many items can be ordered online and shipped to your home.

In addition, pitchforks, shovels, brushes and grooming supplies will be needed to keep the stable and horse clean and comfortable.

Manure A large animal that eats several pounds of food per day will produce a lot of waste. It’s key to have a plan in place to manage manure.

You may want to convert manure into organic fertilizer. Check to see if there is a way to dispose of manure in your area or donate it to be used for gardening or vegetable cooperatives. Some people will purchase manure to use in their private landscapes.

Establish a strategy for manure usage or disposal before buying a horse, as manure can accumulate rapidly and attract flies and other insects.

Veterinary care Research and develop a relationship with a veterinarian prior to purchasing a horse. Horses require routine vaccinations and examinations, and deworming is necessary to control internal parasites. Hooves will need to be trimmed regularly, so it behooves owners to establish a relationship with a qualified farrier.

Best practices for traveling with pets

any pet owners now take their companion animals along with them when

they visit family, travel for business or go on vacation.

Many hotels have pet-friendly rooms on lower floors near walking areas. Even many restaurants – where pet hair and food may seem like an unlikely combination – are open to allowing travelers dine with their pets. Animals may be allowed to sit in patio dining areas, and some restaurants even allow pets indoors.

Those who choose to travel with pets can heed some precautionary tips and plan ahead. ♦♦ The American Kennel Club recommends a veterinary visit prior to taking pets on extended trips. Make sure all vaccinations are current and ask for a copy of health certificates and records. ♦♦ Invest in a carrier or crate large enough for your pet. The crate should be large enough for the pet to stand, turn around and lie down. A crate or carrier can keep pets secure in the car and may be recommended in pet-friendly hotels. ♦♦ Airlines may allow small pets to ride in the cabin in a carrier under your seat.

Larger pets will have to ride in the cargo hold. Try to book a direct flight, so that the pet will only have to board and disembark the plane once. Notify airline personnel when you are traveling with a pet. Provide food and water for a long flight. ♦♦ Confirm the rules at hotels concerning pet stays. Recognize that you may have to pay fees when bringing pets into a hotel.

Bring along your pet’s food and water, as unfamiliar foods or water from unfamiliar dishes may cause stomach problems. Try to keep your pet quiet and be considerate of others who may not be animal lovers. ♦♦ Keep identification on your pet, including your mobile phone number, should the pet get lost. ♦♦ International travel may require a different set of procedures depending on where you are traveling. Some countries do not allow pets to visit, while others may require pets to be quarantined for a predetermined period of time before they’re allowed to travel within the country. You also may be able to apply for a pet passport to make international travel go smoothly.

Traveling with pets can be enjoyable, and more and more pet owners are bringing their companion animals along for the ride.

Tips for socializing your pet

W

elcoming a new pet into a household involves introducing the animal

to your lifestyle and helping it grow accustomed to your schedule.

This process also involves acquainting the pet with the people who visit your home on a regular basis. One of the most important skills pets can learn is to be disciplined around strangers. Prospective visitors to your home will not necessarily share your enthusiasm for animals, so wellbehaved pets can make such visits much more enjoyable for everyone.

Pets who are not socialized may be more anxious, timid or prone to lashing out with aggressive behavior. Socialization of both cats and dogs – or any pet that is allowed to roam freely in your home – is recommended. Here are some guidelines for success.

Cats

Socialized cats are more likely to be trusting, affectionate, well-behaved and calm. According to Catster, an online resource for cat owners, the socialization process will be influenced by the cat’s disposition and when the animal was received.

Begin by handling the cat in short sessions of around 10 to 15 minutes per day. The more you handle the cat, the more at ease the animal will become around people. The cat will slowly realize it can feel comfortable and secure in the company of humans.

Once the cat is acclimated to general petting, begin to touch other areas of its body, including its ears, feet and mouth.

Give a treat when he or she behaves well.

When you feel secure that the cat is receptive to your touch, begin to have other people stroke or hold the cat.

of the cage, so the cat can watch. Keep treats nearby, so if your pet engages socially, you can reward it for positive behavior.

Dogs

Many people view dogs as more social animals than cats, but that’s not always the case. Puppies that do not receive adequate opportunities for early socialization with humans or other animals may be fearful of strangers and other animals and prefer to hide instead of coming out and greeting new people and other animals.

According to canine behavioral expert Cesar Millan, the best window of time to socialize a dog is before it reaches 12 weeks of age. Afterward, the dog is less likely to accept anything new or unfamiliar.

Dog walking is one of the best ways to socialize new puppies but only after the dog has received its required immunizations.

During walks, the dog will be introduced to plenty of new sounds and people who will be excited to come up and say hello. This activity also works with older dogs. However, if your older dog exhibits aggressive behavior, try a muzzle to staunch barking and nipping and a secure lead to help others feel comfortable.

Puppies need to have socialization reinforced into adulthood. In her book, “The Other End of the Leash,” applied animal behaviorist Dr. Patricia McConnell mentions dogs may go through a period in adolescence when they become more cautious and perhaps aggressive toward people and animals who are unfamiliar to them. Continued exposure to new experiences can help, as can recognizing and addressing any situations that make your dog weary.

The Humane Society of the U.S. says dogs should learn to act politely and quietly when encountering other dogs. Many adult dogs do not enjoy socializing with multiple dogs at once, and dogs should not be forced to meet every new dog they come across during walks. Social time with other dogs can come by way of walks and gentle introductions to another dog with loose leashes, but only if both pets feel comfortable.
