here’s hoping that everyone enjoyed their Summer holidays and are all set for some autumn activities at the brentwood centre.

This bumper edition of BitesizeBLT Magazine offers you an amazing choice of autumn and winter events. In the International Hall, we have The Wedding Event and The Not So Royal Variety Performance for Great Ormond Street in September; Sally Morgan and John Barrowman in October; the BLT Fireworks extravaganza and the Christmas Fair in November and fi nally Jools Holland in December. That’s not all either! Make sure you check pages 14 to 16 for our full listings.

We also have some great new sporting activities including Water Zumba, Free Friend Friday, Fencing for adults, Gym Rox Tots to name just a few. We are also holding some fantastic fun events with our Halloween themed day, Spooky Splashtime and October Kids holiday activities.

We would like to ask for everyone’s support again this year with our Macmillan Coffee Morning on Friday 30th September between 8am and 12 noon.

Our staff will be doing car washes from early in the morning for donations and I’m sure the reception staff will be displaying their baking skills tto serve alongside the tea and coffee in main reception.

Spring It On Trampoline and Activity Centre Since 1999 RecoilTwisters Trampoline Club have been working towards building a regional facility for trampolining in Brentwood and a home for our Club.

We identified a Community Hall in Brentwood that will be perfect for our project and work has begun on the refurbishment.

Keys Hall was originally built as an army gymnasium, which was used for PT training during WWII. A Brentwood man named Ted Blake was a Sergeant Major Instructor at the

hall, who went on to became the early pioneer of trampolining in Britain. Ted Blake was to become influential in building the popularity of the sport in the UK. He became Managing Director of Nissen UK (manufacturers

of trampolines in the Brentwood area for many years) and a chief architect in the way competitive trampolining operates today. Adopting this Hall for physical activity, and trampolining in particular, is in keeping with the history of the building, the core of which dates back to the 19th century. The main hall housing the trampolines will be called ‘The Ted Blake Hall’ in his memory. Terence (Ted) Blake, (1921 – 1998).

Mayors Chosen Charity

The refurbished facility will have a main hall of housing 9 permanently erected trampolines all of which will be sunken to floor level, providing a safer and more accessible training arena.

There will be viewing areas and ancillary rooms including a classroom for coach / judge education, a large reception area, office space and storage room. Plans are on our notice board in the Brentwood Centre reception.

RecoilTwisters are proud to announce that we have been chosen as one of the Mayor’s Cllr Joan Holme’s nominated charity’s. This is a great honour as not only will this raise the profile of our project but we will also receive funds from the Mayor at the end of her term.

Disability Suite

The new Trampoline Facility will be completed mid-September, but we are continuing to make applications for further funding. So if you are an individual or organisation that would like to support this unique project, please contact tricia@springiton.co.uk or tel. 01277 525991 for more information.

Adjacent to the main trampoline hall will be the Disability Suite. This area will have its own entrance, into a large welcoming reception area with specialist changing and toilet facilities, a Multi-Sensory room, a Sensory Integration room and a fully accessible gym. There will also be direct access into the main trampoline hall from this area.

Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates.

The focus of Pilates is on strengthening your central core and abdominal muscles to control the movements.

When we talk about core strength, we are talking about your back, abdominal and pelvic muscles, by working these muscles through a series of controlled exercises they then become stretched and lengthened with increased flexibility, allowing the body to become stronger and firm, without adding bulk.

It also teaches you to focus on your mind as you exercise the body, gradually improving your coordination, body awareness and overall posture alignment.

Many chiropractors, osteopaths and medical practitioners refer their clients, who do suffer from back and neck injuries, to Pilates. It can help to improve the strength in their bodies and try to prevent further injury.

Christmas Tips In this addition of the BLT bitesize magazine we will be giving you ideas and advice on how to achieve the body you crave as well as a healthier lifestyle. I’ll also be answering any questions you have on nutrition or exercise issues. With the Christmas fast approaching its time to get in shape for those Christmas Parties and start feeling fitter, so we thought by giving you ideas of different ways to start losing any excess pounds you may wish to shed. eXercISe: To really notice a difference you need to start being active and that means exercising a minimum of three times a week.

This could be a trip to the gym, playing a sport or even a brisk walk. Get out of the comfort zone! Whichever activity you choose try and get your heart rate up, you’ll know you’re working when you feel slightly out of breath and start to sweat. Keep your exercise varied. Simply walking to the station instead of driving is a good start but realistically you wont achieve the weight loss you are after just by doing this.

Soon this walk will become too easy so look for ways to continually increase your activity.

eXercISe OF the Quarter: lunge with a twist 1. Start with your feet together.Take a step forward so your legs are 1 metre apart.

2. Lower your back knee so it is a foot above the floor and both legs are at right angles. Hold this position.

3. Now extend your arms out in front of you and twist your upper body towards your front leg, 90 degrees.

4. Hold, then twist back to the front, step back and return to a standing position.

5. Repeat 12 times on the same leg before changing legs.

6. Repeat the entire exercise three times to reap the benefits but prepare to feel it in the morning! nutrItIOn adVIce: Try and develop a structure to your diet. Eat regularly but in moderation. Little and often is the key, without skipping meals. Drink plenty of water, two litres a day preferably. This will give you more energy and keep you hydrated as dehydration can often be confused with hunger. Base your meal size on the activities that follow. For example, if between this meal and the next you will be sitting at your desk or watching TV, your calorie intake should be low as there will be little opportunity to burn off what you have eaten. If, on the other hand, you are going to be working strenuously then increase the size of your meal accordingly.
