In my tenure, I have maintained and expanded relationships with architectural and M/E/P firms with which we work, while seeking new clients and markets to broaden our reach. In 2008, I undertook efforts to enter Federal markets, overseeing processes to become registered to do business with the Federal government and actively seek Corp of Engineers work. I take pride in the relationships I have built with our clients, other consultants, and municipal officials, which affords us the opportunity to be the ‘go-to’ consultant for certain local architectural firms, as well as respected bike and pedestrian consultant in the local market.

My secondary role is assisting the firm principal with marketing and business development activities for the company. These activities include oversight of proposal preparation, strategizing of project pursuits, representation at trade shows and community events, participation on community boards, overseeing the firm’s visual identity and online presence, and client relations. On an annual basis, I help plan holiday client outreach and a client appreciation event timed to coincide with the opening day of the NCAA basketball tournament- the Montana Breakfast.

Baughman Company

Wichita, Kansas August 2001- September 2007 For over six years, I assisted in day-to-day oversight of all levels of design for clients in retail, residential, multi-family, education and medical markets across the state of Kansas. I worked on behalf of both local and national clients, overseeing design of their site projects, including retailers such as Kohl’s, Dillons Food Stores, Kwik Shop, Walgreens, and Sportsman’s Warehouse. On a daily basis, I collaborated with civil engineers in the office, as well as architects and M/E/P professionals outside of the firm, to ensure successful completion of projects. My role included oversight of design efforts by two junior staff members, as well as marketing efforts of the firm. In my time at Baughman, I also developed the firm’s new visual identity and new collateral materials.

Denver, Colorado June 1998- August 2001 As a member of the Denver Urban Design Group, our focus was on transportation projects not only in the Denver metro area, but also other regions in which the company had offices.

Below: This hand sketch was prepared as part of my work on the Transportation Expansion (T-REX) Project in Denver. The purpose of the sketch was to illustrate to visual impact of a new light rail bridge over Belleview Avenue at I-25 in the Denver Tech Center.

However, for the better part of 3 years, my day-to-day job was as a team member on the $1.7 billion Transportation Expansion (T-REX) Project in Denver, a 20-mile expansion of I-25 and I-225, including a paralleling light rail line and 13 new rail stations. As part of the urban design team, co-located with representatives from the Colorado Department of Transportation and Regional Transportation District, I helped develop the urban design program for the T-REX project, including: retaining wall, noise wall, and bridge aesthetics; interchange landscapes; park-n-ride design at 13 locations; preparation of a corridor bike & pedestrian plan; and involvement with public outreach efforts.

Project Experience RETAIL PROJECTS Wichita, Kansas

During my career, I’ve worked on dozens of retail centers, big and small. Projects have included new sites for Walgreen’s, Kwik Shop, Dillons Food Stores, and Kohl’s, as well as prospective metro area sites for retailers such as Target, Lowe’s and Costco. In addition, I have worked with developers and land owners to prepare retail center concepts for sites from 2 to 100 acres in the metro area.

The site below was a parcel a local development group was exploring for a new retail center at Wichita’s busiest intersection. The land was part of Hawker Beechcraft’s East Wichita Plant and was no longer part of the company’s plans. I prepared different layout options based on retailer targets. The site was ultimately developed at the city’s first Costco.

Project Experience RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

Land development and land planning has been a central function of my duties in the last 15 years. I have prepared neighborhood plans for almost a dozen new neighborhoods in the Wichita metro area, including single-family and multifamily products. This work included conceptual land plans, development of entry features and open space plans, preparation of neighborhood pool plans and sales graphics for on-site agents.

The plan below is one of several concepts prepared for a local developer who wished to build patio homes on a 25-acre site they owned. Options were based on not only lot size, but also placement of homeowner amenities on the property.

Enhanced Planting in Parking Reserves - Reduce turf areas by using ground covers and other flowering/ ornamental shrubs that will add seasonal interest.

- This concept would enhance the ‘intimacy’ in each node...creating central landscaped spaces with buffered parking

Project Experience FEDErAL PROJECTS McConnell Air Force Base Wichita, Kansas

Since 2011, my firm has worked on Federal projects at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita. My role has included site design, landscape plans and erosion control planning for our projects. Significant project include: West Gate Replacement: A design- build with a local contractor which included the demolition of existing security gates at the west base entry point. My scope included design and specification of a crash rated ornamental gate and fence as well as design of new base entry signage using Department of Defense uniform design criteria.

Flight Line Access Gate Replacement: This project included the replacement of two secured vehicular access point to the flight line with new, modern ornamental gates with high capacity automatic openers. I also specified two secure turnstile access points for airmen adjacent to the gates.

KC-46A Hangar Projects: I have worked with the hangar contractor, Archer Western Aviation Partners, since October 2014 on monthly quality control inspections of erosion control measures within the work area.

Project Experience Header Image: Block 1 was the first new redevelopment in decades of a downtown block in Wichita.

With some infrastructure dating back over 90 years, the project was fraught with unknowns. My role included site grading, pavement design, and coordination and design of new utilities.

MOSLEY AND ROCK ISLAND STREETSCAPE Old Town District Wichita, Kansas

Set for construction in Spring 2016, this project entails the construction of two blocks of streetscape in the Old Town entertainment district of Downtown Wichita. My role included: • • • •

Project Experience UNION STATION PHASE 1 IMPROVEMENTS Wichita, Kansas

The Union Station complex in downtown Wichita had been virtually unused since Cox Communications and other tenants moved elsewhere in the mid- to late 2000s. The property had long been viewed as a key link between the Old Town entertainment district and the Intrust Bank Arena neighborhood. Local developer, Occidental Management, stepped in to purchase the site with the intent of redeveloping the property and restoring it to its former status.

As part of my work on Phase 1 improvements, I prepared site plans, including grading, utility and street improvement plans, for the Grand and Patrick Hotel site. Moving westward on the campus, I worked with the developer and the City of Wichita to prepare utility replacement plans for existing utility infrastructure in the phase 1 project area, as well as grading utility, and erosion control plans and permitting. I also worked with the developer and the City to prepare a utility master plan to serve future phases of the development as part of the conceptual plan prepared by the project architect.

Project Experience Header Image: Bethel College, a small liberal arts school 25 minutes north of Wichita, was in need of a transformation because of an underwhelming campus infrastructure. Working with campus administration and a local architect, I helped develop a campus landscape master plan to guide future improvements as funds are raised. To date, a new campus gateway, new art gallery garden, new art center entry plaza, and public spaces around a renovated academic center have been built.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER NATIONAL AIRPORT RENTAL CAR AND PARKING FACILITY Wichita, Kansas

A new rental car center and parking structure were built in support of a new air terminal built at Wichita’s airport. My project duties included modification of existing water rights, which would allow splitting the water right among four new wells on the airport campus to support a planned campus irrigation system. Once the water rights modification was approved by the state of Kansas, I set about designing a new irrigation system for the areas around the new parking structure and surface parking facilities, which encompassed almost 12 acres.

Project Experience Header Image: Entry to Cambria, a 35-acre upscale neighborhood in southeast Wichita, is through two entries highlighted by native Kansas limestone walls that pierce an undulating 10 to 15 foot tall berm covered with native grasses and trees.

SUNRISE BOUNDLESS PLAYGROUND ENHANCEMENTS Wichita, Kansas

In 2013, I oversaw an update to the master plan for the Sunrise Boundless Playground, a 1-acre playground built by the Sunrise Rotary Club in Wichita.

Tasks included evaluating maintenance needs, after 9 years of use, addressing deficiencies, soliciting input from the club and user groups and planning future additions that maintained a universally accessible playground. The plan included a wheelchairaccessible hedge maze, a natural play area, a sound garden, rubber surfaced track, and new play equipment with features for children in wheelchairs and in the autism spectrum. A phasing plan and budget were developed to aid in fundraising.

Project Experience Header Image: Landscape and circulation improvements at the Will Family Academic Center at Bethel College, Kansas

COMMUNITY PARK CONCEPT PLANS

Working on behalf of a community in south central Kansas, we were tasked with evaluating two large sites for a new community park. In addition, I worked with the team architect and in-house engineers to develop planning budgets for future streetscape, bike and pedestrian and community gateway feature improvements for use by the municipality.

JACK KILBY PLAZA Great Bend, Kansas

Working with a Wichita architect and sculptor from Great Bend, I oversaw development of site grading and drainage plans, as well as a landscape plan which would create a comfortable space which would highlight the Jack Kilby sculpture installation. Native son Jack Kilby, credited as the father of the microchip, is honored in this plaza at the Barton County courthouse square.

Project Experience Header Image: In preparation for the building’s centennial celebration, the Catholic Diocese of Wichita set about to renovate the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Wichita. My work included site utility upgrades and a new campus landscape that honored the history of the building, including a new prayer courtyard and other gathering spaces.

CITY OF BEL AIRE SIGNAGE AND WAYFINDING STUDY Bel Aire, Kansas

The city of Bel Aire sought to enhance its gateways at 7 locations around this Wichita suburb. Working with the City Manager and Community Development Director, I developed a slate of ten concept familiesincluding gateway, trailblazer and secondary gateway signs. City Council selected 3 concepts to present to the public, who ultimately selected a sign fabricated from native limestone. Future expansion of this signage system will include wayfinding as funds become available.

ARMOUR BIKE BLVD. Wichita, Kansas

The first bike facility of its kind in east Wichita, the Armour Bike Boulevard extends 4-1/2 miles through the city’s east side. I worked closely with the assistant city engineer and principal bike planner throughout design, including at public open houses.

This facility was part of over 10 miles of on-street bike lanes I designed in 2015, with another 5 miles underway in 2016. All in all, I have helped design almost 25 miles of both on-street and off-street bike facilities in the Wichita area since 2001.

ASCENSION CEMETERY NATURAL BURIAL AREA Bel Aire, Kansas

Completed in 2014, the Ascension Cemetery Natural Burial Area was the second natural, or green, burial area in the state of Kansas. I worked with the Director of Catholic Cemeteries for almost a year, preparing concepts and other supporting materials as he sought Diocesan approval of this project.

Once approved, I prepared construction documents and assisted with project bidding. This successful relationship led to additional cemetery expansion work at the Diocese’s Resurrection Cemetery in west Wichita, with over 2,000 grave sites added in 2015.

While not planned by our firm, the developer asked me to help him develop the entry gateway and landscape. Melissa is a member of the inaugural class of SMPS University, and has served the Philadelphia Chapter as Membership Chair and CPSM Education Chair. In addition to membership and volunteering in SMPS, Melissa serves with her husband and son as an Ambassador Family for the March of Dimes.

Brad Thurman, PE, FSMPS, CPSM

Brad is a principal and Chief Marketing Officer with Wallace Engineering, a structural and civil engineering consulting firm. For the past 15 years, he has helped lead Wallace’s marketing and business development efforts across two disciplines and five offices. Brad is a past-president of SMPS Oklahoma, served for three years as an instructor for the SMPS Presidents’ Leadership Symposium, an annual training program for incoming chapter presidentselect, and was co-chair of Build Business 2009 in Las Vegas. He currently serves as President-Elect on the SMPS National Board.

Kelly is the founder and president of Vmax Performance Group, a business performance improvement company located in Broken Arrow, OK. Widely recognized as a powerful speaker and dynamic trainer in the fields of leadership, sales development, and strategic planning, Kelly is an author, speaker, and business performance coach for executives and companies throughout the U.S. A national award-winning sales representative and sales manager, Kelly has spent the last seven-teen years teaching and training organizational leaders in sales and executive management. He is a Registered Corporate Coach with the World Association of Business Coaches (WABC), and currently serves as a leadership and business development trainer for the AGC and the Construction Leadership Council (Oklahoma). In 2012, he became a board member on the SMPS Foundation.

Kelly has written extensively for numerous industry publications, including the SMPS Marketer. His first book, “1-on-1 Management™: What Every Great Manager Knows That You Don’t,” was released in 2008. His second book, “1on-1 Selling™: How to Win More Sales, Defend Your Margins, and Build Your Brand,” will be published in 2013.

Barbara Shuck, FSMPS, CPSM Barbara has more than 25 years of experience in marketing, business development and sales. She is the Firm-wide Marketing Communications Manager at Wilson & Company, Inc., Engineers & Architects, and is Secretary/Treasurer on the SMPS National Board. She was SMPS Arizona Chapter President (2002-03), and received Arizona’s Pinnacle Achievement Award in 2004.

She served as SMPS National Marketing Communications Awards (MCA) in 2006 and Build Business Conference Chair (Denver) in 2008. She has an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management (Glendale, AZ), and a BA in Communication Arts and French from Washburn University (Topeka, KS).

His diverse background encompasses three decades of promotion, marketing, research, produce management, and business development. I created print materials for the conference based on the golden age of air travel, drawing on a retro theme. As co-chair of the Wichita East High School Sideliners Football Booster Club, I produced the gameday program which was distributed at home football games in the 2013 and 2014 seasons. This work included all graphic design and layout of the program, which featured full color front and back covers and black & white interior pages. As part of production, I also sold advertisements and created print ads for several sponsors. Funds raised from production of this program went to the football program at Wichita East.
