A CLASHING COUNTRY A Group Editorial Modern beliefs are much more practical than traditional beliefs. Traditional beliefs limited people to doing the same things as everyone else and following exactly what the church wants. Our country today is giving people the right to be individuals by following modern beliefs. There is much more to our country than religion, and now that our generation is realizing that, we are clashing beliefs with the older generation. In these times of modernization, the people of our country have the freedom to express themselves. If our country still followed the traditional beliefs, women would have very few rights, the youth wouldn’t be as educated, people wouldn’t be able to express themselves as individuals, and we wouldn’t have many new technologies. From makeup, and short hair, to no corsets, and bare legs, the first thing you may notice about a flapper is the appearance, which is almost unrecognizable compared to women in the earlier 1900s. Women in America are changing in various ways, not just the appearance. Local grocery stores mean no more slaughtering their own meat and baking their own bread. With all that extra help, women have the time and energy to find jobs outside the house. People debate whether or not the changes are beneficial to our society. But when you think about it, the appearance changes are allowing women to wear clothes that aren’t restricting their breathing, as well as allowing women to express themselves better. Kitchen appliances help women better accomplish the huge task of maintaining a home. Inventions like those allow for the women to have more time to pursue a job outside their home.More job opportunities means a women can choose what she wants to do. The role of women is changing in America, and we believe, for the better.

Our country relies a lot on education, which is a very controversial subject between traditionalists and modernists. Today we witnessed John Scopes, a teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, 1925, was found guilty for teaching evolution in school. We witnessed The judge order him to pay $100.That is a lot of money these days. John Scopes thinks there are many reasons why evolution is good to teach in schools. He believes it is right to teach students about evolution because students need to know what’s going on in their world and the science behind it. Teachers should be able to teach evolution in schools because it will be more beneficial to the younger generation’s learning. William Jennings Bryan, a politician and fundamentalist Christian, thinks that they should not be able to teach students about evolution because he is worried that evolution will take away religion from the schools. This trial is a prime example of a way the traditional beliefs are clashing with the modern ones.

eads jingling. Dresses flowing with every spin and kick on the dance floor. There is an essence of freedom all around the club, and everyone is having the time of their lives. The times have changed for the youth, primarily the women. They have new styles and trends that are the mere opposite of how things used to be. Women wear clothes with loose fabrics and a lot less material than before. This alone provides them with the feeling of freedom. No other country is changing as much as our country. We are providing new styles and ways of thinking, which shows that America is a place of innovation. Before the current state of the Roaring 20’s, women were supposed to all be the same, pure people. Nowadays, the women do what they want with the help of the changing fashion industry. The new clothes let them wear what they want and do what they want, which is showing individuality in everyone. These changes in fashion represent the changes in our country, always innovating and growing more confident.

A war torn country is left in the hands of our generation. Everyday during WWI the youth of America didn’t know if it was going to be our last day, so we decided to celebrate and enjoy every single day we have left. Our celebrations influenced the new American fads and traditions of this great era, the 1920’s. Our new generation in this era is not destroying our old American values, we are simply living our lives to the fullest and trying to restore happiness and fun back into the country. We’ve provided the country with many improvements in education, modern arts, and a safe space for individuality. Before the 1920’s hardly anyone attended school, and when they did attend, it wasn’t enjoyable. Now, the attendance rates in high school and college have dramatically increased, and people enjoy going to school. Our generation has also had many new innovations in the modern arts. New music and video are part of the new generation’s creations. Our generation has also created a safe space for people to express themselves. Boys and girls have more freedom with their social lives, appearance, and how they choose to act.

Cities offer radio and theater. Chicago offers 116 different makes of cars. People start regarding home building and home ownership. Single-family home ownership in metropolitan areas increased 40% during this decade. If you live in the countryside there is not much education. In the cities, you can work on factory and you don’t need to work outside in the sun. You can get a better pay and you don’t need to work all day in the countryside. A lot of people have their own business. There are not many facilities like police stations and fire stations. That is why nowadays a lot of people like to live in cities. Industrialization and urbanization began on now days, but it accelerated greatly during this period because of technological innovations, social changes, and a political system increasingly apt to favor economic growth beyond any other concern.

Today, our generation is rebuilding the idea of being an American. We no longer fit the mold of the traditional beliefs. The youth is bringing a time of change for our country, and it is benefiting everyone. The roles of women have changed from being quiet housewives to being outgoing individuals who do and say what they want. New ideas are being taught to the youth which is giving them a better education that prepares them for the next chapter. Freedom is given to people all around, especially women and that is because of the changing fashion. The cities are booming with the success that the youth has brought them in this time of innovation. The youth are modernizing America for the better.

IS INDEPENDENCE IN WOMEN CAUSING A THREAT? By: Lydia Cui From makeup, and short hair, to no corsets, and bare legs, the first thing you may notice about a flapper, is the appearance, which is almost unrecognizable compared to women in the earlier 1900s. The role of women is changing in America, and I believe, for the better. Flappers are cutting their hair to a bob right below their chin in contrast to the long uncut hair of traditional women. They are painting and powdering their faces with a variety of makeup. They have stopped using corsets and are moving on to looser, freer dresses. They are cutting the hemlines of their dresses to the point where you can see their knees. When flappers settle down to marry, have children, and maintain a home, they are finding it much easier than women from earlier generations. New inventions, such as the dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and electric stove are just a few examples of kitchen appliances that are making jobs easier around the house. Women are also eating mainly food that has either been prepared or prepackaged at the local grocery store. Gone are the days where women bake their own bread or help slaughter their livestock. Now we have the store to shop at. That makes it easier to find time for other activities. Without cooking and cleaning taking up most of their time, women can seek jobs outside the house to work at to keep from being heavily dependable on their husbands for support. Before and during the war, the few women that seeked jobs usually worked as nurses, teachers, and librarians. Now there are more opportunities like being a secretary, stenographer, typist, or file clerk. The department store has also started hiring women, and they now are involved in merchandising, designing, being clerks, and buying fabrics. You can also find women working at textile mills. While older women of the 1920’s are living up to traditional roles and values by working at jobs and making the most out of their new kitchen appliances, younger women, on the contrary, haven’t been viewed the same way. Teenage girls have been seen attending nightclubs, and speakeasies much to the dismay of their parents. They are driving cars and attending movies, playing ping pong and the newly fangled game, mah jongg, and participating in dance marathons that have resulted in serious injuries as well as deaths. One thing that has bugged women for a while was how much alcohol their husbands would drink after work. Men that were tied after a long day of work, would step into a pub

3

thinking they will only have one drink before leaving. The common result, would be that one drink would lead to another, and sooner or later, the man would’ve spent his entire wages on drink and stumble home to his expectant wife and hungry children‌ empty handed. This upset the women because not only was the father terrifying the children with his drunken ways, he was also setting a bad example and spending all the family’s money. Women finally responded by protests. Another role for women was protesting against alcohol. We will see whether or not they are successful in getting alcohol prohibited.

SCIENCE V.S. SERMON By: David Pope

Today I witnessed John Scopes, a teacher in Dayton, Tennessee, 1925, was found guilty for teaching evolution in school. The judge ordered him to pay $100.That is a lot of money these days. John Scopes thought there are many reasons why evolution was good to teach in schools, he believed it was right to teach students about evolution, because students need to know what’s going on around in their world and the science behind it. William Jennings Bryan, a politician and fundamentalist Christian, thought that they should not be able to teach students about evolution because he was worried that evolution would take away religion from the schools. He thought it would be like the battle of the fittest for who would get to have children, or eugenics. When they went to court, Clarence Darrow was John Scopes’ lawyer. He made William Jennings Bryan say that everything in the Bible has not happened in that direct order. But that didn’t mean anything even if they would have won. Ten minutes later, they found John Scopes guilty of teaching evolution because he wasn’t supposed to teach evolution in schools. Five days later, William Jennings Bryan died in his sleep. Some people didn’t think he should be getting sued. The Government believes you should not be able to teach evolution if the schools don’t allow you too. But some think it’s best for him to teach evolution to students because they are young children that should know about the science behind evolution. The children believed it was better for them to get taught evolution. But there was a man named William Jennings bryan that liked what he said but he still sued him. That is bogus if you know that evolution should be taught

THE FREEDOM OF FASHION By: Abby Cupp Beads jingling. Dresses flowing with every spin and kick on the dance floor. There is an essence of freedom all around the club, and everyone is having the time of their lives. The times have changed for the youth, primarily the women. They have new styles and trends that are the mere opposite of how things used to be. Before the current state of the Roaring 20’s, women were supposed to all be the same, pure people. Nowadays, the women do what they want with the help of the changing fashion industry. These changes represent our changing country, always innovating and growing more confident. Women’s new and changing fashion is not a threat to American values because it shows freedom, innovation, and individuality. These changing times give women a lot of new opportunities for freedom. They now can wear what they want and do what they want just for fun without getting judged by other people their age. The styles even provide more freedom too! The looser fabrics make it easier to move and having less material on overall is a lot more practical, especially in the summer. The women who go out dancing and go to clubs or “Flappers” were able to just go out and have fun with their friends. These new fads provide so many positive benefits and even represent one of the biggest American values which is freedom. The early 1900’s are a time of innovation. Everyone is competing for the best new trend and fad, and the new fashions for women are high up on the list of the best new things. There are many new designs in anything from bathing suits to outfits for going out. The new designs are a lot more practical than what women used to wear. The fabric is a lot thinner, especially the pantyhose, which makes it so much easier for women to do things. The new styles and trends for women are also innovating their behavior. These more “scandalous” styles are providing new ways to think and act for both men and women. The trends show innovation which is something our country values a lot. For all of the years our country has existed, the women have maintained the same styles. Everyone dressed the same way with long dresses, thick stockings, corsets, and long hair. That is definitely not the case anymore. Women nowadays have short and wavy bobs, heavy makeup, short dresses, sheer tights, no corsets or bras, and no petticoats. These new fads provide many ways for women to show who they really are and show how they differ from other women. This never happened before because older generations of women were supposed to be seen as innocent and pure. The women today, like flappers, are carefree, wild, and do what they want. They are more daring, confident, and flirty today since they are finally starting to be accepted for who they really are and who they want to be. The way that women dress and act today shows individuality, which is an American value especially in the urban areas. The new fashion for women represents American values like freedom, innovation, and individuality. Therefore, it isn’t a threat to these values despite what the older generations might think. It is time to embrace the change that is always around us and start enjoying life! After all, that is what women’s fashion is about!

THE YOUTH CHANGE AMERICA By: Olivia Taeger A war torn country is left in the hands of our generation. This generation has brought a new interesting life to education. On the weekends everyone will get together and throw a party, which attracts even more people to come to college. We understand that throwing parties is probably not the most responsible choice, but it encourages more people to attend school. College and high school life has become much more exciting because of our generation. High school graduation rates have gone up, high school and college attendance rates have increased significantly because there is a desire to come to school and experience the new college and high school life. Many new innovations in the arts have emerged because of the new generation. Photography has had a major breakthrough in this era. It’s a new technology used to show things to other people who don’t have access to see them in person. Recently, photography has turned into documentation, which has led to the first ever major magazine of our era, Time Magazine. New movies and music have erupted and are influencing the way our generation acts and dresses. The characters seen in movies today show our generation that it is okay to act and dress differently. This generation has also brought a sense of individuality. They dress how they want, talk how they want, and act how they want. Our generation has the power to change the perception on how young women and men are seen. Other girls my age don’t want to have to cover every inch of skin on their bodies, they want a sense of freedom. Now, women are allowed to go to the bar and do other activities that used to be dominated by men. Men can explore new fashion trends. They don’t have to follow the old American ways of dressing, they can express themselves and won’t be judged for it. Our generation is not destroying Old American values. Change should be accepted, and that’s what my generation is bringing, change. Both men and women have more freedom than ever. We can finally express ourselves. We can go out and dance, go see a movie, go to school, and even go out and buy a magazine. Our generation has provided the country with many new opportunities and advancements in education, the arts, and creating a safe environment for individuals. We aren’t ruining values, we are opening the country’s eyes to new experiences.

WHY ARE SO MANY PEOPLE MOVING TO CITIES? By: Dhruvin Patel Welcome Welcome Welcome. I am enjoying the 1920s I am sure you are to.i am enjoying living in the city.it’s fun, better than the countryside.I lived in the countryside and I moved to the city because there was a lot of struggle and not many opportunities in the countryside. So many people are moving to cities because. What cities offered, and a lot of opportunities, paragraph (1),(2),(3). Cities offer radio, theater.chicago offers 116 different makes of cars. People start regarding home building and home ownership. Single-family home ownership in metropolitan areas increased 40%during this decade.Better jobs, If you live in the countryside there is not much education, you can work on factory and you don’t need to work outside in the sun, you can get more wage and you don’t need to work for all day like the countryside. And a lot of people have their own business.

Right now in the countryside there were not many facilities like not much police station, fire station.so that's why now days a lot of people like to live in cities. Industrialization and urbanization(the process of making an area more urban.) began on now days, but it accelerated greatly during this period because of technological innovations, social changes, and a political system increasingly apt to favor economic growth beyond any other concern.

Blacks “There is Great Migration”(The Great Migration is the movement of six million African-Americans out of the rural Southern United States to the urban Northeast, Midwest, and West that occurred between 1916 and 1970. Until 1910, more than 90 percent of the African-American population lived in the American South). An infestation of boll weevil devastated the crops on which many black families relied for there living. Black American are moving to cities because they can get better jobs more wage and more opportunities in the north and midwest. The US Constitution states that everyone is equal, but many groups in America in the are not treated fairly. There is a great deal of prejudice against those who are not considered 'real' Americans. This year is difficult for blacks. It is a time of racial hatred. Many whites join the Ku Klux Klan organization. The Klan often terrorized blacks. Klan members sometimes burned fiery crosses in front of the houses of black families. And they sometimes beat and murdered blacks. The Ku Klux Klan also acted against Roman Catholics, Jews, and foreigners. But it hated blacks most of all.

My thought are that cities are better that’s why people are moving. In south black are not treated well and they are moving to north.and cities life is much better than countrysides.
